Message From the director
Sad to see Summer come to an end but glad to see school begin after Labor Day the
unofficial close to the summer season.
Welcome to the Fall Edition of Enjoy Wallingford. As we gear up for an exciting fall
season let me share with you some:
Welcome to
Fast Facts…………………….……………………..Good News
From this summer past!
Kelly Montgomery and her fitness staff Exceeded the average per session health fitness
participants with over 887. In addition, Kelli introduced New this summer on the lovely
campus of Choate a weekly Cross Country Training series that attracted 31 participants,
Michelle Bjorkman’s ASAP Month long Cultural Arts Program had record numbers of
participants with 205, Our New offering at Blue Trail Range of pistol safety and marksmanship
had 36 participants. Another first this summer we successfully hosted our own swim lessons
with our WSI instructors Tim and Melissa Russo and Claire Hendershot with 65 participants.
Adding to firsts we offered a full contact football camp that was well received with the 32
campers led by Wallingford’s own Tom Brockett. Next year we are looking to expand this
offering. The Summer Playground program topped out at 737 participants hosted at three
school locations. Finally Lego camp attracted 45 future engineers!
On a final note I am personally proud of the 2012 Community Pool Staff led by Josh LeMay,
Jason Zettergren and Tim Russo for their professionalism, hard work, attention to detail and
service to the patrons of the pool which resulted in a successful summer. In addition, a
special note to the staff present on the day of July 2, 2012 who sprang to action and
performed a text book rescue and saved the life of a 12yr old boy. Their training and ability
to function as a unit under duress was exemplary! Those guards are, Jared Thurston, Robert
Pursell, Eric Thurston, Adria Buonocore, Melissa Russo, Aaron Ricory Laine, Leah Gisella,
Kaitlin Carboni and Adrei KhramKou.
Please enjoy what Kenny Michaels our Program Specialist and staff have put together for this
fall’s lineup of programs.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT!

active older participant, as well as those
just starting their journey to a fit and
healthy lifestyle. What stays the same are
all the elements the Zumba Fitness-Party
is known for: the zesty Latin music, like

the exhilarating, easy-to-follow moves; and
the invigorating, party-like atmosphere.
Active older adults want camaraderie,

In response to suggestions from the preschool
professional community, this topic is being
offered to increase understanding and practice guidelines. The peanut allergy has
become a nationwide concern as well as a
growing list of other allergic reactions among
our young children. Chris More has many
years experience as a school nurse that she
can offer on this topic. Dealing with concerned parents and bewildered children can
complicate the preschool experience but this
information will assist preschool professionals and parents in making good decisions.
Raising Reader Clubs
Contact: Veronica Casey – 203-284-4019 at
the Family Resource Center
The third year of the Raising Readers program
will begin in September thanks to a grant from
the Liberty Bank Foundation. The program is
being offered to parents, grandparents and child
care providers who wish to improve their skills
in introducing their young children to the joy of
reading. As the world around us continues to
expand the use of technology in many forms, the
Fall
2012
basic requirement still exists: everyone needs
to be able to read to use it! The Raising
Reader clubs meet for six consecutive weeks
with a team leader and go home with a new
book after each session. Each session lasts
for just 60 minutes and most of them offer
child care at the site. One of the sessions
features a trip to the Wallingford Public
Library for a tour – it’s amazing! This program is free thanks to the support from the
Liberty Bank Foundation.
The locations for the Raising Readers clubs are
held around town at locations such as
Wallingford Community Day Care; Moses Y
Beach Elementary School; the Wallingford
Public Library other sites will be announced so
for more information contact the Family
Resource Center: 203-284-4019.
Check the WE CARE website for additional
programs and activities that may be scheduled
during the fall season - www.wecarecouncil.org.
Bebes Activos
Wallingford’s bilingual playgroup meets every
Thursday from 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm at convenient locations around town. This is an
opportunity for the parent and child to experience a program in both English and Spanish
with a parent leader guiding the activities.
Each playgroup consists of a free play to
engage children in games and activities; then
there is an age appropriate craft for parents
and children to do together; a snack time
which is followed by a story time with songs
that follow a seasonal theme. Children must
be accompanied by a parent/grandparent/care
giver. The program is offered at the WE CARE
Family Resource Center; Spanish Community
of Wallingford and the Ulbrich Boys and Girls
