The fire at one of downtown's favorite old buildings has created a large hole not only on Main Street but in the lives of workers and customers alike. (See our update on Page 12). I know the whole community wishes everyone the very best in getting the building and the businesses back on their feet again as soon as possible. The Proud has reported on many of these early families and their stories and looks forward to covering many more. This issue Chuck Lucas (along with help from his loyal assistant, his grandson Caden, pictured above) takes us back on another journey through the story of the old Denman House, proudly sitting high atop Old Redwood Highway since 1896, defending Penngrove from the south-east. And finally our article on the SMART barriers inspired a great deal of commentary, and we have updates on the issue, reflecting a variety of opinion. The sign over the wrought iron arch says “Hillview.” Curious drivers entering Penngrove may wonder about the story hidden behind the arch and the vineyard in the foreground. It is the Denman House and this is its story. He bought his own farm which he tended for two years until he fell under the allure of the gold fields in California. In August of 1851, he and his brother, James, boarded the steamer Georgia and headed to Panama. After crossing the isthmus, he embarked on the steamer Oregon and made his way up the Pacific to San Francisco. THE DENMAN FAMILY A few days later he traveled to the mines in Buckeye Gulch near Mokelumne Hill in Calaveras County, one of the richest gold strikes of the area. After an eight month stay and finding success in the gold fields he moved to San Francisco where he started a milk business in 1852 and began to dabble in real estate. Ezekial Denman, (1827-1894), like the Wharff and Crane families before him, came to California during the Gold Rush of the 1850’s. According to the Denman Family History by Harriet Newell Harris (1913), Ezekial was born in Neversink, Sullivan County, New York, to England native William Denman Jr. and his wife Nancy Curry. William was a farmer and Ezekial spent his summers working on the farm and attended school during the winter. Ezekial graduated from New York State Normal School and was a school teacher in Ulster County, N.Y., for three years. Ezekial’s brother, James, was also a graduate of the Normal School in Albany and continued his teaching career first in Petaluma and then San Francisco where his name is closely linked to the cities education history. The James Denman Middle School is named after the Civil War veteran who served under McClellan as a war correspondent. He was a long term president of the Board of Education in the city and a was a member of the Board of Supervisors. Rancho. He planted 400 acres of potatoes and 2,500 plum and apple trees and continued to buy property. He built his own house from redwoods from his land that he hand hewed. Mr. Denman began speculating in real estate and according to Petaluma historian, Skip Sommer, “found great wealth in that endeavor.” That fall he went back east and married Nancy L. Hardenberg on October 5, 1855, also of Sullivan County, and returned to Sonoma County where they had nine children. According to the Denman Family History (1913), six survived: Frank H., Nellie L., Ida Belle, Carrie E., John R. and Catherine D. Nancy died in 1870 and Ezekial remarried to Isabella St. John. They had no children. VALLEJO’S RANCHO In 1834, General Mariano G. Vallejo was given a 66,000 acre, (almost 100 square miles), land grant from the Mexican government for his military service. This area included most of Petaluma and Penngrove. The invasion of gold seekers in the early 1850’s and the loss of his labor pool to the mines and land to squatters eventually led to the depletion of Vallejo’s vast land holdings. He wasn’t able to afford the legal challenges to his title presented by the onslaught of newcomers. By the end of the decade his fortunes had plummeted and his lands were sold into smaller parcels In 1866, the year that Petaluma hosted Mark Twain, Ezekial founded the Sonoma County National Bank of Petaluma. He was elected Vice President of the bank and was its largest shareholder. In 1886 he was elected president of the bank. He was the original stockholder of the Petaluma woolen mills and a member of the City Trustees. He was a director of the Sonoma & Marin Agricultural Society for 15 years and acted as president for two years. Continued on page 11 ~ BORJORQUES RANCHO Bartholome Borjorques (1780-1863) was a veteran of the De Anza expedition. He received a 24,903-acre land grant in 1845 by Governor Pio Pico called Rancho de Laguna de San Antonio. The land spans both Marin and Sonoma Counties and includes much of the Chileno Valley. In 1851 he divided the rancho and gave an interest to each of his seven children keeping one interest each for him and his wife. They weren’t able to keep up with the loans against their property and lost it due to foreclosure. Mr. Denman then traveled up to Two Rock, (Dos Piedras, meaning two rocks in English – it lost the plural in translation), and purchased 1000 acres of the Bojorques Safeco • Travelers • The Hartford Progressive • Allied • Zurich With a mulitude of Insurance Companies, we can shop around for the best price MOJICA INSURANCE AGENCY Auto ■ Home ■ Business 6650 Commerce Blvd. Ste. 25, Rohnert Park Krista Hall Ca Lic #0G70404 Se Habla Espanõl 4 PENNGROVE PROUD Designed by Marty Johnson Accent on Design ww.martyjohnsonaccentondesign.com 707-585-9500 [email protected] Summer 2015 It takes a team! It will be at least a year until any businesses can think about re-opening. A fundraiser has been established to help with the businesses that have been affected by the fire on May 7th. This is going to be a long and expensive haul for these people. The historic building with the businesses that occupy them, especially the market, is the heart of Penngrove. Our community is unique and always comes together in need. Please go to the link and help them out if you can: www.penngrovefire. myevent.com. A community fundraising BBQ is also in the works. The Rancho-Cotati Firemen will be holding their annual Pancake Breakfast Saturday, July 4th, 7am-11pm at the Penngrove Fire Station - come on down and bring your appetite. It’s almost that great day of the year when the parade comes to town and the town comes to the parade (top photo). Join your neighbors on Sunday, July 5th downtown for the 39th annual parade, fun in the park and BBQ, with desserts available from the local 4-H members. A big thank you to Kim and Jeff for their fifteen years at Redwood Montessori School. We are sad to see them go, but welcome Aishwarya Kancharia’s and Daniel Turner as they follow in their footsteps in helping to educate our young children. They have a great group of teachers ready for next semester (middle photo). Congratulations go out to Yanni’s Sausage Grill as they celebrate their 5th Anniversary on July 3rd. What a lovely addition Francesca and John have made to the community. A unique baby, kid’s, home, and gift shop has opened downtown in The Grove. Visit hello Penngrove and say hello to Kaitlin. We are sorry to see Valhalla Smoke Shop close. We wish them the best. Rumor has it that a Day Spa type of business may be opening up there soon. "Down Home Day” at the Artful Arrangements Homestead on Orchard Lane was a success for a firsttime community event. People loved the live music, the hearty homesteader's hot lunch, and felt The Portal of Time is an inspiring symbol for remembering to make wise decisions today for a better tomorrow (bottom photo). The Penngrove Power and Implement Museum, 200 Philips Drive will be holding their 18th Power Up on July 11th. Stop by and check out the engines in motion. The museum has been a 501c3 non profit since 2005, quite an accomplishment for our small town. The Petaluma Music Festival is in its 8th year, and will be holding events July 31st and August 1st at the fairgrounds in Petaluma to support music in our schools: www.petalumamusicfestival. org. In that same vein, Lagunitas Brewery, www.lagunitas.com, just down the road has started their summer music series in the LaguMiniAmphitheaterette, free live music and good beer, what more could you want on a beautiful summer evening! The Green Music Center has kicked off its third full summer season of indoor/ outdoor concerts when they can open up the back of Weill Hall to the terraced lawn so that audiences can sit both inside or outside looking at the Sonoma foothills while enjoying the concert with a picnic or a bottle of wine. The programs range from Broadway to jazz, bluegrass, country and a little classical, including House of Cards star Kevin Spacey in concert, Broadway and television star Kristin Chenoweth, a daytime Bluegrass Festival featuring the David Grisman Sextet and Buena Vista Social Club on their “Adios Tour,” as well as country singers Martina McBride and Dwight Yoakam, Wynton Marsalis with Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and comedian Steve Martin on banjo with bluegrass band Steep Canyon Rangers. All the shows are listed at: gmc.sonoma.edu/ Summer 2015. See you around town! PENNGROVE PROUD 6 Summer 2015 Penngrove Panthers Reader’s Comments Penngrove Elementary School News , Dear Penngrove Proud, Thank you for your inspiring story on the Purple Hearts ("Sonoma's Purple Heart Club" Spring issue 2015). As a retired nurse, I had the privilege of meeting many of these veterans who sacrificed so much. I am very pleased that you mentioned Post-traumatic Stress Disorder which is the most important issue for all veterans. A physical injury is visible and can at least be treated; mental injuries so often go undetected and therefore untreated. Keep up the good work. Mamie Dolthas - Cotati Another busy and exciting year came to a close for Penngrove School. I’m sure you’ve noticed the construction happening around the back parking lot. The old YMCA building was torn down and we are in the process of having a new one raised. The plan is for this new building to be completed by the start of the new school year. It will not only serve as a new home for the YMCA but it will have some additional offices for school staff. February's Talent Show was absolutely amazing! There were 26 acts, plus one surprise performance from the teachers. All grade levels performed - from Kindergarten to 6th Grade to teachers and staff. There is so much talent at Penngrove School! B. Mathews. He build a small home that later became a bunkhouse after the Denmans purchased the property. Not much is known of Mr. Mathews. He was an 1871 delegate to the national Young Men’s Christian Association in Washington D.C. and is buried at Cypress Lawn Cemetery. By 1869, Ezekial moved to Penngrove and by 1870, Sonoma County was the sixth most populated county in California. THE DENMANS MARRIED WELL The Creamery - Now The Creamery - Then Ezekial’s son, John, managed his father’s ranches and property in Two Rock and Penngrove. A successful dairyman, he established the county’s first creamery in 1887 on the present site in Penngrove. In 1896, John built the 4000 sq. ft. Victorian that sits across Old Redwood Highway from the Palace of Fruit. John and Frank’s sister, Ida Belle, was born on November 18, 1859 and in June of 1887 married George Plummer McNear, the son of the wealthy John A. McNear. John McNear, "Grade A" dairy barn owned livery stables, a grain mill, founded the Cypress Lawn Cemetery and with over 2,500 acres of land was a major land holder in Petaluma. Skip Sommer credits him with bringing electric lights to Petaluma. McNear owned a small navy of scows that navigated the Petaluma Creek and was a founder of the Sonoma-Marin Railroad. He was the prime mover to bring the Carlson-Currier Silk mill to Petaluma after the 1906 earthquake destroyed their buildings in San Francisco. He owned the land, the railroad and could provide an available source of labor with the many women who worked the local chicken ranches looking for income. Charlotte E. Denman The Victorian Italianate McNear building in downtown Petaluma was built in 1886 with bricks from the McNear brickyard. Today houses the Mystic Theatre (which was among the first theaters to show silent movies in California) and the McNear restaurant in the wrought iron fronted building. Frank H. Denman The marriage brought together two of the most illustrious and wealthiest families in Penngrove and Petaluma history. G. P., as he was known, and his wife Ida Belle gave birth to a son, named Denman McNear who became the president of the world’s largest railway of the time, the Southern Pacific. 7 1856 at the Two Rock ranch. Frank went through the Petaluma school system and graduated from UC Berkeley by 1871. In 1881 he became a county surveyor and by 1886 he was elected cashier of the Bank of Sonoma County and began his banking career. By 1908, he and George P. McNear opened the Petaluma Savings Bank and he was installed as president. In addition to his ranching and banking, he was a noted horticulturist and owned 110 acres of orange groves down in Orange County that according to the History of Sonoma County (1911), were “the finest Valencia oranges in the state.” set of rules of sanitation practices that make it safe to drink. Mr. Joerger served on the Petaluma City Council and as County Supervisor in District 2. He was also a member of the Penngrove Social Firemen and various civic organizations. LAWRENCE OF HILLVIEW Bill and Shirley’s son, Barry, managed the vineyard and the property that is composed of a 6.6 acre parcel with 3.5 acres of planted vineyards, modern rental units, a large barn containing a woodworker shop and the creamery housed Barry’s former Eagle Ridge Winery. Barry C. Lawrence began his passion for wine-making in the early 1980’s. As an amateur, he won a gold medal at the State Fair and with the encouragement of friends, began operations of the Eagle Ridge Winery in 1983 and began bottling in 1985. He studied wine making at the SRJC and in Germany and brought the “Geneva Double Curtain” technique to Penngrove, a method that takes advantage of planting grapes that makes it ideal for the windy, foggy Petaluma Gap so desirable for Syrah and pinot noir fruit. Mr. Lawrence, a local wine historian, resides on Sonoma Mountain where he collects wine artifacts and has a small Ezekial’s sister, Cynthia Francis, was born in 1841 in New York and came to California in 1863. Ulysses was a writer for the San Francisco Chronicle for 8 years and was awarded the prestigious David Perlman Excellence in Journalism award in 2004 for her work on the cluster of breast cancer in Marin. A history major from Oberlin College in Ohio, Torassa made a career change in 2008 and became a successful real estate agent in Marin county. After she bought the ranch she hired Mr. Sommer to manage the property and oversee the rehabilitation work. She is in the process of restoring the home that until recently housed a childcare center. Most notably, the color was changed from Pepto Bismol pink to beige with white accents. Local Live Listings Rockin' Reviews Green Music Center - Weill Hall SEVA Foundation Benefit at the Sonoma Mountain Event Center Celebrating Wavy Gravy's 79th Birthday May 17th. 2015 Wavy Gravy with Steve Kimock ©Janice Wulf 2015 On a fine day in mid-May a couple of thousand musicloving folks gathered together to hear a wide and varied selection of great music and to raise funds for the Nepal Earthquake Relief and the SEVA Foundation. And of course to wish Wavy Gravy, Northern California’s favorite hippy, a happy 79th birthday. It was a seven hour-plus birthday party, with musical sets by Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, Steve Kimock & Friends, the California Honeydrops and Hot Buttered Rum. Wavy sat in his chair on stage for the show and lead the proceedings, telling stories and reading prose and poetry between bands. Sally Tomatoes Cafe and Bar was open next door along with a couple of food vendors providing a variety of edibles. There was good local beer and wine as well as kombucha on tap, and free filtered water for those that brought a bottle. Hot Buttered Rum kicked it off of with their version of jamming folky-bluegrass. Leftover Salmon’s Vince Herman and Front Country’s Jacob Groopman joined them. Very nice versions of “Summertime Gal,” and “Sittin’ on Top of the World.” The California Honeydrops were up next. I had not heard them before and had only heard them described as Soul/ R&B. They were that and so much more! Great stage presence and make you have to dance music. I really enjoyed “When It Was Wrong,” and “People Get Ready!” At the end they came down from the stage to play and do a music circle amongst the audience. After a short break Steve Kimock, an improvisational guitarist came on stage with Jay Lane on drums, Jeff Chimenti on keys, and Bobby Vega on bass. Their wonderful instrumental set included various pieces of music from throughout Kimock's career. About halfway through they slowed down one of their jams to allow Wavy to read from Lord Buckley’s “The Hip Ghan,” a satirical piece about Mahatma Ghandi. Only Wavy could pull this off. They came to voice their concerns over the barriers that have sprung up in advance of the SMART train coming to town. Members of the community, including Kim Hanson, Bill Fishman, Greg Karraker, fire chief, Frank Treanor and this reporter addressed the communities concerns to county Supervisor, David Rabbitt, SMART general manager, Farhad Mansourian and Susan Klassen, head of the Sonoma County Transportation and Public Works. The panel was moderated by Ray Soper. Greg Karraker and Bill Fishman STORM OVER THE BARRIERS From both sides of the table by Chuck Lucas minutes through an already traffic congested area. Don Barella brought up the fact that Penngrove is still a very active agricultural community and that the large harvesters do not have enough space to maneuver around barriers. Fire fighters expressed their concerns about the ability to respond to emergencies with their large equipment. Christie Brindmore addressed her fears about the safety of children at both the Montessori and Penngrove Elementary schools. out that “the Sonoma County Public Works Department has not weighed in on the traffic risks posed by these barriers.... They don’t want to... take a position in favor of road safety that runs counter to SMART." Rabbitt is trying to represent both his constituents and the SMART board that he’s been appointed to. Rabbitt has been working hard to find a solution to the problem, and there was some good news. “The plan is to have the current concrete medians removed prior to the Fourth of July Parade,” he said, “and have new rubber medians installed afterward.” Additional work will be done to provide sidewalks with pedestrian control gates and a dedicated pedestrian path on Woodward. The bad news however is that the County is considering restricting parking near the rail intersection that would greatly impact an already critical parking situation for customers and merchants along the street. Kim Hanson said “These spaces are vital to the businesses along Main Street.” With only a handful of parking available as it is, it’s hard to imagine restricting it even more. The panel from SMART listened intently and L to R...Susan Klassen, (unamed) engineer, Farhad Mansourian, David Rabbitt, Ray Soper, Chief Frank referred to other agencies, Treanor, Kim Hanson, Bill Fishman and Greg Karraker. while the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) was often the go to guy for Two people spoke out in favor of the barriers but that was not blame, but there was enough to pass around. Again, Mr. Mansourian stepped up and accepted the responsibility. Fencing and a pedestrian gate are also being discussed and a new flashing beacon will be installed in front of the post office and market according to Mr. Rabbitt. Ms. Brindmore spoke about the speed of autos downtown, and as the meeting ended, as if on cue, a car that had stopped for pedestrians in front of the post office was rear ended, adding an exclamation point to the discussion! Mr. Rabbitt has now said that a sidewalk on the east side of Main Street is being investigated by county staff to connect the existing sidewalk in front of SuperBurger to Woodward Avenue. Rabbitt advocated for and received a $250,000 place holder from the County and SMART and staff may be working on it soon, he said. Several from the group visited the Ely and Adobe Road barrier sites to show officials the problems with the low lying area on Ely and with the barrier on Adobe being struck so frequently. A measurement was taken showing that from the bike lane to the barrier on Ely is twelve feet and that a car going past a cyclist would not have enough leeway to pass without the danger of striking the median barrier, thus preventing the auto from giving the three foot distance from the biker that the new law mandates. stopped, took this object off the roadway and threw it in the weeds.” The safety concerns on East Railroad, Adobe and Ely roads have clearly not been addressed, but Kim Hanson said, “The fact that they are listening to us and knowing that these cement medians are not conducive for our community is a plus.” Please see letter on next page for another view. Penngrove resident and ardent bicyclist, Judy Shubin, wrote Rabbitt and the SMART board and said, “I ride my bike regularly and have had three disturbing experiences at the Railroad Avenue rail crossing. The north-side shoulder narrows just as the curb begins and drivers who pass me in the curb area have come way too close to me for safety.” She continues “In Penngrove it’s worse. The curb starts right where cars are parked... which means a driver needs to keep three feet between the right side of the car and the bicyclist. There’s just not enough room for this to happen... Switch “car” to bus, big truck, aggressive driver, and the danger grows.” David Rabbitt - [email protected] Farhad Mansourian - [email protected] [email protected] Attorney at Law Preserving family relationships along with your assets... • Wills & Trusts WillsAdministration & Trusts • Estate Estates • Mediation Consult with a knowledgeable, 525caring E. Summer 2015 Continued from page 7 Reader’s Comments , To the Editor of the "Penngrove Proud": I'm a 20+ year resident of Penngrove. Back in the bubblynineties, I settled here to raise a family, and I chose Penngrove over other Sonoma County areas for its quaint charm and closeknit community spirit. Those qualities shine through the local focus of your Penngrove Proud community magazine. Now I read with great interest a recent article in the Spring Edition 2015 entitled "Danger Lurks on Main Street", decrying those concrete median barriers recently erected at the road crossings with SMART railroad tracks. Sure, those median strips may seem out of character for this small rural town, but please consider what those yellow things are warning us of: There's a Train Coming to Town! And note the train won't be stopping, just quickly passing through. We have a national problem here in our hometown; wherever roads and railroad tracks intersect at grade crossings, there's danger. Automobiles are becoming more soundproof, prompting Federal standards for the volume of train horns to be increased ten-fold! The outcry from residents near railroad tracks has prompted communities beside railroad tracks to enact "quiet zones", where the train horns are not utilized to warn of a train approaching at grade crossings. SMART informs us that Penngrove will be a quiet zones. The Main Street grade crossing is already hazardous, with limited visibility for motorists in both directions, and no train horn to warn us of an approaching train?! The adjacent intersection with Woodward Avenue already adds to the general confusion at the grade crossing. Then, pour on the weekday afternoon congestion of drivers passing through town, and eventually someone's going to be stuck on the track when the train comes. I shudder to think of the effect it will have on persons and property. Please inform your readers that a train driver can't swerve to avoid something on the track ahead, and a long distance is necessary to stop a train on the tracks. Not everyone understands this. We, the public, must be aware of these hazards, and respect the train and its right-of-way. Do not walk or drive around flashing crossbucks and lowered crossing gates. Simple as this sounds, there are drivers who don't respect the train, and those ugly median block and candle reflectors must be there to prevent drivearound incidents. (By the way, I see these same barriers being used at grade crossings all around the Bay Area - it appears to be a statewide standard for new and upgraded crossings.) I'd like to see future articles in the Penngrove Proud informing us of new developments with the SMART train service, providing balanced coverage from the railroad's perspective. SMART has a website at http://main.sonomamarintrain.org/wp-content/ uploads/2012/01/SMART-Media-Safety-Guidelines.pdf, or contact their SMART Community Outreach Specialist at 707-794-3074.
