Community Roundup
Dozens of gift baskets, music
from a live D.J., mouth-watering
pulled pork sandwiches served by
the Kiwanis and a live broadcast of
the 139th running of the Kentucky
Derby were just a few of the
highlights at the fifth TRC Derby
Day. The one and only Mr.
Huntington Beach himself Matt
Liffering was Master of Ceremonies
for the spectacular event.
TRC students kicked off the
demonstration portion of the day
with a flag show to the tune, “I’m
Proud to be an American”. This was
followed by a spectacular display of
talents from HCPEC boarders,
trainers and horse announced by

TRC and the Answered
Prayer Ranch Clydesdales
clattered down Main Street for
the 109th Huntington Beach 4th
of July parade.
Parade viewers had
plenty to watch for this year.
Horses4Heroes, a program TRC
is proud to be partnered with,
was represented by 91-yearyoung Steve Young, a WWII
veteran and stepfather of
Caroline Winnik, TRC mom and
board member. Students
Alexandra and Adin Winnik
were a hit as well, with faces
painted and hair colored,
organized by Caroline’s niece
Faith who was visiting all the
way from Oregon.

Volunteers worked all day long – from 8:00 set-up till after 6:00
tear-down – to make this an unforgettable Derby Day.

Back at the TRC arena,
City Council member Joe
Carchio took the stage to
announce some special
people who work tirelessly
behind the scenes: Cathy
Meschuck, grant writer for
TRC since 2003, received the
Cowgirl of the Year Award;
Irwin Kanode, who works
closely with the City Council
to ensure our arena meets
regulation and the needs of
our growing student
population, is Cowboy of the
Year; and Kendall Smith, a
volunteer since 2006 when

It doesn’t take a major fund
raiser to bring our volunteers out,
ready to pitch in wherever needed.
Whether their skills lie in
organization, public relations,
teaching, construction,
photography, graphic arts, writing
– oh, and horse-handling of course
– TRC volunteers are making sure
that this program keeps working.
Congratulations to our
Volunteers of the Month for the
first half of the year:
Ÿ
January – Ron McKenzie
Ÿ
February – Patty Stone
Ÿ
March – Suzanne Leskovar
Ÿ
April – Lois Sheppard
Ÿ
May – Benjamin and Grace Lyle
Ÿ
June – Dennise Werre
she was only six, received the firstever Ambassador’s Award, for her
dedicated efforts as a representative
to the Council on behalf of TRC.
This year’s Derby Day was not
only the most successful yet, but
significant for another reason. Our
supporters spent the day in the very
arena that they helped build: Where
students learn about horses,
friendship, teamwork, perseverance
and their own greatest strengths.

Students open horse show
with flag ceremony
TRC students participated in
the Huntington Central Park
Equestrian Center’s open horse
show, with a flag ceremony to
the tune “Proud to be an
American”, the same ceremony
that they performed at our
Derby Day fund raiser in May.
TRC is a part of HCPEC, and
we are always thrilled to
participate in these events. Our
students work hard in their
lessons and look forward to
these opportunities to ride
alongside the rest of the
equestrian community.
Thank you to the HCPEC
staff and boarders, and our
community supporters. We can’t
do this without you.
