We are always accepting new members. If you would like to join us, or would like more information, please contact Jean Hostman at [email protected]. I extend a warm welcome to all of our guests and visitors that we have with us here at Holy Infant during these holy days. I hope that you feel warmly welcomed in our parish community during this great season of Christmas! A blessed and peace-filled New Year to you as well! While this time of year has a host of dinners and presents and visits associated with it, we must not lose sight of its primary importance: To touch our hearts and our living with the incredibly good news that God in Jesus Christ has taken up his home with us. This is a visitor who we hope and pray does not hop on a plane several days later and not be seen until next Christmas or Thanksgiving. He is looking to settle down with us, get comfortably situated in our family, accompany us each day to school or work, all the time urging us onto greater heights of compassion and generosity. We are so grateful that we have had the opportunity to assist some in our community with Christmas cheer: the Wellston Center in North St. Louis, the many Giving Tree families, Fr. Bob's folks at St. Augustine Parish in North St. Louis, our friends in Haiti, the families our St. Vincent de Paul Society has assisted, our homeless brothers and sisters at Sts. Peter and Paul in Soulard, the Little Sisters of the Poor, our friends at St. Martha’s Hall, the women and children who are offered assistance through the Kathy J. Weinman Shelter in North St. Louis, as well as those who provided food and assistance through the St. Wenceslaus Food Pantry in South City. As we all know these folks are in need of our prayers and material assistance throughout the year. I am hoping that in this coming year we can organize ourselves to assist a refugee family coming to our area. Pope Francis has asked every parish in Western Europe to adopt one refugee family in this coming year of mercy. This is something I think we can do as well. Thanks to all who helped make our own season bright: Liturgical ministers and choir, church cleaners and decorators, organizers/ coordinators of charitable efforts, office staff, donors of Christmas flowers, and all those friends who have been so generous to the parish and the priests of the parish. God’s blessings to you and your family in this New Year! Because of your generous financial support, in this last fiscal year, the RLA was able to reach over 2,200 8th grade students with the pro-life, pro-chastity message of Right START and offer nearly 500 professional counseling sessions to postabortive men and women through Project Rachel and Project Joseph. We were also able to directly assist 31 families through the Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Fund, including Jackie (not her real name), a 17-year-old honor student who was pregnant. The family faced homelessness, and Jackie felt abortion was her only option. The BTC Fund was able to assist with the family's rent and help Jackie choose life for her child. We encourage you to prayerfully consider a year-end gift to the RLA to assist families like Jackie. Donations can be made by calling the RLA at (314) 792-7555 or online at www.archstl.org/respectlife. How, for four hundred years, they must have filled the hearts of the people of Israel with hope for the day when God’s glory would shine on them. How deceived some must have felt when the glory of God came to them in the lowliest and humblest of human lives. We have many expectations about how the divine presence will appear among us. But we can also set ourselves up, through these expectations, to miss the divine glory when it truly appears. We get caught up in looking for the star, forgetting that the star is not the divine sign, the babe is. It may take a persistent journey for us to come upon the true appearance of God’s glory in our lives: Jesus Christ. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. F O T Over the next few weeks, if you were to stroll around Prague or Budapest or Kraków, you might see curious grafitti scratched in chalk over some doorways: “20 + C + M + B + 16.” The families dwelling behind those doors have celebrated the Epiphany door blessing. They have gathered before the feast-day meal, probably after Mass, and the head of the family has traced the sign of the cross on the piece of chalk. Standing on a ladder, the leader traces the numbers for the new year, and the letters C M B for Christus Mansionem Benedicat, Latin for “May Christ bless this house.” The letters also point to the names that tradition has assigned to the mysterious magi, Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar—although scripture tells us nothing of their number, their country, or their names. The blessing speaks of journeys ended and journeys begun at the doorway, and prays that all journeys be as satisfying as was the magi’s. It prays that the house beyond the door have the quality of love and peace that the magi marveled at when they at last arrived in Bethlehem. In some countries where the Soviet Union tried to impose a harsh atheism, the vigor of this household custom survived all efforts to erase Christian customs. In the years of struggle, the chalked blessings were a pervasive sign of defiance, and now in the light of new freedoms, they are a sign of the resilience of our tradition and the fulfillment of the magi’s quest for meaning and peace. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Children’s Corner A New Year's resolution is a tradition, common in the Western Hemisphere and Eastern Hemisphere, in which a person makes a promise to do an act of self-improvement or something nice. Which of these statements would make good resolutions for you to do? • Tell someone they are nice. • Write a friendly note to someone. • Make fun of someone. • Thank a person who made you dinner. • Clean your room without being told to. • Call someone a name. • Invite the new kid in your class to play. • Cheat on a test. • Do your homework • Pray for help, to give thanks or for others. • Complain about things you don’t like. Make a resolution you can do that would make someone else feel good. THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD JANUARY 3, 2016 January 23, 2016 ENTRY FORM Doors open at 6:30. Trivia starts at 7:00 pm.
