Keeping in touch KIT Edition 22 27th July, 2016 St John’s Lutheran School 154 Adams St, Jindera NSW 2642 The Power Of Words A Message From Our Principal Have you ever been cut down by someone's words? Or had to counsel your child (or others) because of what of what someone else has said? It only takes a few seconds to undermine confidence and dash hopes, but it takes so much longer to undo the damage, remove doubt and restore confidence. EISTEDDFOD Congratulations to our Taiko drummers who came first in their division at the Albury Wodonga Eisteddfod on Monday. A special thanks goes to Mrs King for all of her hard work. The choir will be performing in the Eisteddfod today and so we look forward to seeing how they go. For any parents who missed both performances, we have asked the students to perform for us this Thursday at 2.45 pm in the hall. You are welcome to come along and see/hear them if you are free. I know I have also been guilty of causing the damage. Those words hastily spoken that afterward I wish I could retract. The resulting broken relationship that needs healing and forgiveness. Our words have power. They can bring life to others or they can destroy. We have a choice each time we speak. QUALITY SCHOOLS SURVEY DATA Thank you to everyone who took part in the recent survey conducted by Insight SRC on behalf of Lutheran Education Australia. All Year 5 and 6 students took part as well as staff and around 80 families. We recently received the results and I was pleased to note that overall, the data was very affirming. However, there are some areas that I have noticed where we can improve. I shared this data with our School Board at our first meeting for the term on Monday and the Board wants to assure you that we take your feedback seriously and will be working through the results in the coming weeks and making plans for improvement where needed. What does God think of us? He has created each one of us (and He is pleased with His handiwork!), He has chosen us, and He loves us so much that He was willing to sacrifice His own son. God thinks that we are special and He treasures us. He longs for us to treat others the same way He treats us. He even offers to give us the strength we need to do this! We just need to ask Him. Let's choose to bring life with our words. "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen." Ephesians 4:29 Wouldn't it be nice if we all benefited from each other's words? BOARD GAMES We would like to increase our supply of board games in the library and were thinking that perhaps there are some unused ones living in homes that may like a new home – namely us! If you have any that you would like to donate to the school, we would really appreciate them. Thanks in anticipation. That’s the theme for Chapel and our classes and students this term! Please ask your child/ren to tell you what it means and how they can improve showing respect to others. We will be trying to help them at school in a number of ways but as they say, “Respect begins at home!” I came across a great web article that was full of good reminders for us all. The top 10 tips are worth sharing: 10 Parenting Tips for Teaching Respect and Curbing Disrespect: (1) Model it: If you want them to do it, you have to do it too. (2) Expect it: When your expectations are reasonably high, children rise to the occasion. (3) Teach it: Give children the tools they need to show you respect. (4) Praise it: When you see or hear your children using respectful language and making respectful choices, recognize it and praise them for making positive, respectful decisions. (5) Discuss it: Pick out times when you see other children using respectful or disrespectful language or behaviour and discuss with it your children. (6) Correct it: Be strong, firm and direct when teaching respect. At the same time, be sure you are being respectful yourself while correcting the behaviour. (7) Acknowledge it: Don’t just let things slide! Be sure to notice when respectful behaviour is being exhibited and make sure to call them on disrespectful behaviour! (8) Understand it: Your children are growing and learning. Sometimes word choice and behavioural decisions are made because they do not have the correct words or behaviour to relay “I’m tired,” “I’m frustrated,” or “I’m angry.” (9) Reinforce it: Remind children of their good decisions so that they remember how it felt, the praise they received, and the overall experience of being respectful. (10) Reward it: Respectful behaviour should be something that children want to do without overindulgent rewards. However, it is good to associate respectful behaviour with intangible rewards such as praise, recognition, extra responsibility, and privileges. Teaching respect takes patience, time, and a willingness to do as you preach. Time isn’t everything though, is it? It takes years to rear a respectful child and only moments to fill one with anger and disrespect. Which one do you choose? Adults can be affected too. Up to 129 ‘natural’ substitutes for MSG are also hidden in foods and can affect consumers of all ages. The bread preservative 282 is increasingly disguised as ‘cultured dextrose’ or ‘cultured’ anything in breads and wraps even though it can cause irritability, fatigue or insomnia in children and adults. “Reactions to additives build up slowly, so most parents don’t realize they or their children are affected,” says Dengate. “When the family avoids additives for a few weeks parents are amazed to see their children calmer, happier, sleeping better and doing better at school – and they themselves often feel better too”. Some people can even be affected by natural food chemicals in healthy foods like berries or tomato-based sauces. Sue Dengate is author of the best-selling ‘Fed Up’ series about reducing food chemicals for calm, happy families. Booking details for talks are under Quicklinks at www.fedup.com.au Everyone who attends will get a science-based understanding of the effects of food and additives on their children’s health, behaviour and learning and a free magnifying card with numbers and names of additives to avoid. "If anyone in the family is forgetful, easily distracted, oppositional, demanding, easily annoyed, defiant, argumentative, restless, depressed or anxious – perhaps with self harm or suicidal thoughts, suffers from insomnia or unexplained tiredness or from physical symptoms like headaches, stomach aches, itchy rashes, bedwetting, sneaky poos, sticky poos, joint pains, arthritis and asthma, think food," she says.
