Graduation time and water accidents
What’’s
Inside
At this time of year, there are tragic stories of young people who either drown or become seriously
injured in water accidents while attending graduation party festivities. Unfortunately, most accidents
could have been prevented with adult guidance and supervision.
Tim Smalley, DNR water safety specialist, noted some common scenarios when a dozen 17- and
18-year-olds go to one of their parents’ cabins up north.
• An alcohol-impaired person dives off the end of a dock without checking the depth. The water
is only three feet deep and his or her head hits the bottom, fracturing the cervical spine and causing
drowning.
• A few young people grab a canoe out of a shed and head out without life vests. Later the alcoholimpaired paddlers capsize the canoe and only one of the three makes it back to shore.
“Parents should ensure their grads are adequately supervised, and the adult responsible for the
gathering should see that teens do not consume alcohol,” said Smalley. “No one should be allowed
near any kind of boat, canoe or personal watercraft without wearing a life jacket, and no one should
dive head first from a dock.”

On June 7, 2010, at approximately 3:45 a.m., Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched
to a one vehicle rollover with injuries.
The crash was located approximately one mile east of Brayton Rd. on Co. Rd. 8, in Garrison Twp.
Evidence at the scene indicates the vehicle involved in the crash was traveling northbound on Co. Rd.
8 and failed to maneuver a curve in the roadway. The vehicle entered the east ditch and rolled several
times.
The 16-year-old male driver was transported to the Cuyuna Regional Medical Center in Crosby by
ambulance. The driver was then transported to Hennepin County Medical Center by North Air Care.

Richard Henrickson the history of a Green Beret — Part I
Sgt. Richard Henrickson in
uniform of the Green Beret.
By Philip Neese
Richard Henrickson dedicated 45 years of his life to
the U. S. Army. He tells us
of his experience including
“Jump 4001”.
“I was born and raised in
Crosby and graduated from
C-I High School. I was attracted to military service by
my Dad, Eiler Henrickson.
My Dad, believe it or not,
fought in the Spanish American War. He was in the army
for three years during that
time and then he joined the
Navy for fifteen years. He was
trained in deep sea diving.
He used a hard helmet and
suit while he worked on one
of Americas most famous
salvage projects, which was
the salvage of the USS Maine
that took place in Savanna,
Cuba’s harbor.
“Dad got married when
he was 40 years old to my
mother, Mabel, and they
had nine children. Dad was
sixty years old when I was
born and I do have a younger
brother.
“It seemed to me that I had
a lot to live up to so I went
over to Aitkin and joined
the National Guard in 1949
when I was 15 years old. Of
course I had to stretch my
age just a little! Would you
believe it the Aitkin National
Guard was activated in 1950
and our soldiers were going
to be sent to Korea. The Aitkin Guard was Company B,
194th Tank Battalion, 47th
Infantry, Minnesota National
Guard.
“My brother Eiler Henrickson Jr., who was a professor of
Geology, heard about the fact
that I was being sent to Korea.
It just happened that Eiler
served in WWII, he was a staff
officer for General Dwight
Eisenhower, and when he
spoke to my commander,
Captain Larry Nelson, he
mentioned my actual age. I
was suddenly transferred to
the Brainerd Reserves, which
was and Engineering Unit. I
continued on and graduated
from C-I and then joined the
regular Army in 1952.
“I remained in the military
until 1982, completing 33
years of service. I was hired
as a civilian to train US Army
Special Forces as a High
Altitude Freefall (HALO)
Parachute Instructor until
1994. A total of 45 years of
Federal service.
“Some of my assignments
were three years of Korean
War Service, five years with
Co. B, 194th Tank Bn., two
years with the 82nd Adm. Division and 20 years with the
Special Forces. As a member
of the Special Forces I was
assigned to Korean Services,
10th Special Forces in Germany, 1 ½ years in Vietnam. I
was chosen as an instructor at
Fort Bragg, N.C. in parachute
jumping, which included
High Altitude – Low Opening
(HALO) and High Altitude
– High Opening ((HAHO).
HALO jumping was a
method of deploying paratroopers with the least exposure to enemy fire. HAHO
was a method of inserting
paratroopers across borders
by slipping across borders
by using the parachute as a
glider.
“Normal high altitude
jumping was at 20,000 feet.
Jumps were made from altitudes as high as 36,500 feet,
however those jumps require
oxygen.”
Sgt. Richard Henrickson
received the Award of the
Soldier’s for heroism in the
Republic of Vietnam. On
the 19th of September, 1967
as a member of the Special
Forces at Bien Hoa. A jet lost
a wing while landing and
crashed into the mess hall
of the hospital. The hospital
was on fire and ammunition
was exploding from the burning plane. Sgt. Henrickson
dashed into this inferno to
carry hospital patients to
safety. He struggled through
wreckage and removed burn-
ing timbers, going into the
hospital several times. On
that occasion Sgt. Henrickson carried 20 Vietnamese
soldiers out of the burning
building. Some of those soldiers were trapped in that
fire and would have surely
perished if it were not for
the action of Sgt. Henrickson
(Info copied from General
orders number 6083).
Richard Henrickson tells
us about an unusual incident
that occurred at Ft. Gordon
Georgia in 1965. “I was assigned to a two year Medic
course at the Ft. Gordon
Hospital and I was working
under the direction of the
chief Cardiologist when orders were shouted at me.
“Get over to the Little White
House on the double!
“I did not understand what
was required of me. I asked
for the orders to be repeated.
I was sent over to buildings
that were attached to the
hospital. These rooms were
reserved for President Dwight
Eisenhower and other important dignitaries.
“When I got to the Little
Whitehouse, I saw President
Eisenhower and he had just
had a heart attack. He had
been playing golf on the Ft.
Gordon golf course when the
attack happened.
“I became Ike’s personal
attendant for two weeks. I
attended to his needs from
0600 until Ike was tucked
into bed for the night. We

State passes public
apology to people with
disabilities
During the final days of
the 2010 session, legislation publicly apologizing
for the state’s past treatment
of people with disabilities
was adopted. House File
1680/Senate File 1135 passed
both the House and Senate
without opposition and today
was signed into law by the
governor.
State Sen. John Marty, author of the legislation, said
that after 13 years of pushing for its passage, it is time
for the state to acknowledge
that terrible injustices were
done to tens of thousands
of Minnesotans who were
punished for having mental
illnesses or developmental
and other disabilities. Sen.
Marty issued the following
statement:
“I am very pleased that the
state, on a bipartisan basis,
was willing to make this
apology.

“For over 100 years Minnesota had public policies
that took people with mental
illness and disabilities away
from their families and communities and committed
them to state institutions. In
those institutions, some were
forced to work without pay;
some were subjected to
medical experiments and
procedures without their
consent; and some were
subjected to punitive shock
treatments, aversive treatments, and isolation. The
Senate Health Committee
heard from adults who spent
their childhood locked in an
institution, away from their
families, sometimes being
cruelly punished for things
beyond their control. They
were denied the dignity that
every person deserves. This
is a shameful part of Minnesota’s history.
“By offering this public
apology, the state acknowledges its past mistakes and
helps put closure on this
era. This apology may not
seem important to some, but
for people who were wrongfully committed to these
institutions earlier in their
lives, this apology is of great
importance. For the individuals and families affected,
they are finally hearing the
state say these meaningful
words ‘we’re sorry’.”

The splendid Blackburnian Warbler
By Warren Nelson
As a family, there probably
is no other group more totally
and varyingly beautiful than
the warblers. It is sad that
they are so small that they
are easily overlooked by most
people, well hidden among
the leaves.
The Blackburnian Warbler
may be the most brilliant of all
the warblers, only found east
of the Mississippi River in the
United States. It was named
in 1788 by Johann Gmelin for
Anna Blackburne, an English
botanist and bird specimen
collector. The Blackburnian
Warbler is about four and
one-quarter inches long. The
male in breeding plumage
has black and white upper
parts and a buffy-white belly.
He has dazzling orange on
his head, his throat and up-
per breast. He has a black
back, striped white and sides
streaked with black. He has
black wings with white wing
patches and black legs and
feet. The female is similar to
the male except she is duller
colored and she has white
wing bars instead of wing
patches. And, immature birds
have a pale yellow face and
have indistinct streaking on
the sides. When seen in bright
light and the sun shining on
his gorgeous front, it flashes
out like a burning flame.
Elliott Coues, ornithologist
and one of the founders of
the American Ornithologist
Union wrote “There is nothing
to compare with the exquisite hue of this Promethean
torch.” (Prometheus was, in
Greek mythology, the Titan
who taught mankind the use
of fire, which he had stolen
from heaven for their benefit.
For this, he was punished by
Zeus by being chained to a
rock where a vulture came
each day to eat away his liver,
which was made whole again
each night.)
They nest in the north-central and northeast Minnesota,
returning from their wintering
grounds in Guatemala, Peru,
Costa Rica and northern South
America in May and stay
around until fall migration
in August and September. In
summer, they prefer mixed
deciduous and coniferous forests, especially where there are
large pines and spruces. Their
song is very thin and wiry,
sung from the highest perch
in a conifer, looking similar to
a tiny, radiant ornament on a
Christmas tree. The nest is on a
horizontal branch of a spruce
or pine tree, made up of twigs,
plant down and lichens in a
deep cup, lined with grasses
and animal hair. The female
lays four or five pale green
eggs with brown blotches.
She alone incubates the eggs
for about 12 days – with the
male bringing her food at the
nest. Both parents feed and
take care of the young on the
nest and for several days after
they fledge – which is at about
12 days of age.
Their diet is made up of
mostly insects, beetles, ants
and caterpillars. They vary
their diet by eating some berries. The can be seen darting
out like flycatchers, chasing
after flying insects. John Burroughs, famed naturalist and
writer, wasn’t real happy with
the name for the warbler and

wrote “The orange-throated
warbler would seem to be
his right name, his characteristic cognomen, but no,
he is doomed to wear the
name of some discoverer,
perhaps the first who robbed
his nest or rifled him of his
mate – Blackburn. The burn
seems appropriate enough,
for in these dark evergreens
his throat and breast show
like a flame.” It is in these
whispering forests that are its
home, dwelling among the tall
timber, where few will see it
without truly searching for it.
But the search for those who
seek, it is certainly worth the
effort when found.

Gallery features ‘A Dutch Revival’
Paintings by Sarah Wieben
— half painted after Dutch
masters, and half her own
Minnesota compositions —
will be featured in an exhibit
at Ripple River Gallery, June
9 through July 11. A reception
for the artist is planned from 2
to 4 p.m. on Sat., June 12.
Wieben began what has
become an almost obsessive
interest in Dutch culture, particularly 17th century Dutch
culture. “One could say I
have strayed quite a bit from
my initial query, but I have
come up with a half-baked
explanation for why the work
of a Minnesota artist might
look like that of a Dutch one,”
Wieben said. The Ripple River Gallery
is located five miles south of
Deerwood on Hwy. 6, then
3 miles east of Ruttger’s Bay
Lake Lodge on Co. Rd. 14 to
Partridge Ave.

Documents offer hints about Kagan
Elena Kagan’s nomination to a
seat on the U.S. Supreme Court
is still raising more questions
than it’s answering. Even 46,000
pages of documents from the
Clinton Library, released over the
weekend, are offering precious
little in the way of information.
Republicans, looking for clues
to Kagan’s judicial philosophy,
have turned to memos written
throughout her career and to the
judicial philosophies of those for
whom she worked.
Elena Kagan has contributed
money to the National Partnership for Women and Families,
which has ties to NARAL ProChoice America and Emily’s List,
an organization that helps get
pro-abortion Democratic women
elected to Congress.
Carrie Severino, chief counsel
and policy director of the Judicial
Crisis Network, said the little information available is revealing.
“A lot of people have been trying to paint her as a moderate,”
she said. “These documents
really show that that’s not who
Elena Kagan really is.”
Kagan has also been an outspoken critic of Rust v. Sullivan.
In that case, the U.S. Supreme
Court said Department of Health
and Human Services regulations,
which keep Title X family planning funds from paying for abor-
tion programs, are constitutional.
“Rust illustrates the way in which
government funding may have both
more potent and more disruptive
effects than direct government
speech,” Kagan wrote in an article.
“How better, then, to communicate
an anti-abortion message: through
direct speech or through selective
subsidization of health care providers? The latter course…wreaks
havoc on the ability of those private parties in the best position to
challenge the message to provide
a counterweight to government
authority.”
“That raises questions as to
whether she’ll be able to leave
the politics behind, if she’s on the
Supreme Court,” said Severino,
“because it’s a very different type
of role.”
As counsel for President Clinton,
Kagan worked on a memo regarding the partial-birth abortion ban
legislation. Clinton had vetoed
the measure and several Democrats
had offered amendments to the bill
that made it ineffective, including
Rep. Tom Daschle of South Dakota,
whose amendment included broad
exceptions that would have gutted
the law.
“We recommend that you endorse the Daschle amendment in
order to sustain your credibility
on HR 1122,” she wrote, “and
prevent Congress from overriding
your veto.”
Tom Fitton, president of Judicial
Watch, said there is little doubt
where Kagan stands.
“You see quite a radical liberal
and President Obama knew what
he was doing when he nominated
her,” he said. “These documents
are confirming that she’s as far left
as everyone suspected.”
Opponents to the nomination
are also looking at those whom
Kagan deems “heroes,” including
Aharon Barak, a retired chief
judge of the Supreme Court of
Israel, who was made famous by
his willingness to legislate from
the bench.
Barak was awarded the Peter
Gruber Foundation Justice Prize
at Harvard Law School in 2006.
In her introduction of Barak,
Kagan called him “my judicial
hero. He is the judge who has
best advanced democracy, human rights, the rule of law and
justice.”
But it should be noted that Israel does not have a Constitution,
so following Barak’s example that
a judge “should adapt the law to
life’s changing needs,” does not
work in the U.S.
“The question Americans want
answered?” Fitton asked, “Is this
the type of person we want appointed to the highest court in
the land?”

Firewood restriction in effect on state land
The adult
Emerald Ash
Borer (EAB) is
usually bronze
or golden
green in color
with darker,
metallic emerald green wing
covers. Males
are larger than
females but the
adult insect is
generally about
half the diameter of a penny.
Now that the 2010 camping season has started, the
Minnesota Department of
Natural Resources (DNR)
reminds campers that only
firewood purchased at a state
park or from a DNR-approved
vendor may be brought onto
any DNR-administered lands.
This is to prevent the spread
of forest pests, such as emerald ash borer (EAB), which
can catch a ride to new
locations.

EAB Background
While EAB spreads slowly
on its own, it can hitch a ride
to new areas when people
transport firewood or other
wood products infested with
the larvae.
EAB in an invasive beetle
that attacks and kills ash trees.
Its larvae kill ash trees by
tunneling under the bark and
cutting off the tree’s supply
of water and nutrients. Since
its accidental introduction
into North America, EAB has
killed more than 50 million
ash trees in 14 states and
Ontario, Canada.
“Minnesota is a prime target for EAB with more than
900 million ash trees,” Burks
said.
More information about
EAB is available at www.dnr.
state.mn.us/invasives/terrestrialanimals/eab/index.html
“Remember, the best firewood is local firewood,”
Burks said. “Help stop the
movement of forest pests.”

As a result, hardwood firewood, ash trees and ash
products in Hennepin, Houston and Ramsey counties
are quarantined. Firewood
originating from a quarantined county in Minnesota
will be approved only for
use in that county. Firewood

quarantined counties in Minnesota will be approved only

To slow the spread of EAB,
the quarantine also prohibits
the movement of the following items out of quarantined
counties and counties contiguous to a quarantined
county:
• Firewood from hardwood
(non-coniferous) species.
• Entire ash trees.
• Ash limbs/branches.
• Ash logs or untreated ash

Susan Burks, DNR’s Exotic

adds that Minnesotans should
take the following steps to
keep EAB and other forest
pests from spreading
• Leave extra firewood onsite and don’t bring it home.
• Never buy or move firewood that came from outside
of Minnesota.
Those camping on state forest land outside of a designated campground may gather
dead wood on the ground
for campfire use onsite. In
state parks and designated
campgrounds in state forests,
visitors are prohibited from

Although the poster targets
roadsides, the best practices
apply to any landscape where
prairie wildflowers are appropriate. The poster offers
tips for helping bees and
butterflies by improving bee
nesting habitat, nectar and
pollen resources.
Plant pollination by insects
is an essential ecosystem
service. Common foods requiring pollination include:
tomatoes, peppers, blueberries, strawberries, cranberries, raspberries, apples, melons, sunflowers, pumpkins,
plums, squash, and canola.
Bumblebees pollinate some
plants better than honeybees
resulting in larger and more
abundant fruit. Eighty-seven
of the world’s 124 most commonly cultivated crops are
insect/animal pollinated. Between 60 and 80 percent of
the world’s 250,000 flowering
plants depend on animals for
pollination.
In the United States, the
National Research Council
reported in 2007 noteworthy losses of both managed
and wild pollinators. Habitat
loss, pesticide use, diseases,
parasites and the spread of
invasive species are the major causes of pollinator decline. Threats to pollinator
communities affect not only
pollinators themselves but
also natural ecosystems and
agricultural productivity.
