One Hundredth Issue of the Piedmont Piper
By Bob Sapp and George Thurmond
With this issue of The Piedmont Piper we celebrate 100 issues of our award winning newsletter. At this milestone it is appropriate to
look back at the history of the Piedmont Chapter after all a newsletter is a reflection of the people and events which have taken place
during these seventeen years and 100 issues. Past Editors include Herman Tovey, Jack McCord, Paul Simpson, Scott Ray, and the
current Editor is Gerald Breed.
The Piedmont Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution, was chartered on the 17th of March 1994 in Roswell, Georgia.
Instrumental in the forming of the chapter were Frank H. Darwin, Jr., Edgar B. Sterrett, Jr., Merril Law and Aubrey R. Morris assisted by Colonel Robert B. Vance and Colonel Robert F. Galer. Both Colonel Vance and Galer are former GASSAR Presidents; Colonel Vance a Former President General of the NSSAR.
Merril Law arranged for the organizational meeting to be held at Roswell Methodist Church on February 12, 1994. Attendees were
Ed Sterrett, Frank Darwin, Merril Law, Ken Meeker, Eric Szweda, Ken Howell, Aubrey Morris and Colonel Galer. Several names
were suggested for the new chapter serving the Roswell-Alpharetta area. It was decided to let the location within the state determine
the name. And so it was - Piedmont, at the foot of the mountains, suggested by Aubrey Morris.
Our first grave marking was conducted by Compatriot Eric Thorstenberg, honoring the service of Patriot John Maxwell near North
Point Mall. Since then we have marked a total of 49 Patriots and 16 member graves, several joining with other chapters to accomplish the task. Grave markings have been conducted as far away as Maine and West Virginia for member patriot ancestors. Our support to Veterans was an early activity led by Doug Stansberry and today by Charles Moran. Larry Maurer established a very strong
Eagle Scout program while Compatriot Bob Buck made his mark in our schools essay and poster programs. Bob even kept up with
the winners once they went off to college.
The chapter has participated in the Old Soldiers Day parade since our origin. Larry Guzy and George Thurmond wore their uniforms
for the first time at the 1998 parade. A few years later, the chapter was asked to furnish the Color Guard to lead the parade and we
have been doing so for many years now.
Participation on Memorial Day and Veterans Day has become a staple with the chapter. For several years, our color guard has provided the colors at the annual Roswell Remembers Memorial Day while also making a presence at the Marietta National Cemetery
program. A tent is provided for the chapter at the Roswell program.
In 2001, we started to obtain proclamations for the several American Revolution historical dates (i.e. Patriots Day, Constitution
Week, etc.). This activity now includes Alpharetta, Cumming, (formally Canton until the Cherokee Chapter was formed), Roswell,
Milton, Johns Creek, Norcross, Duluth, Cobb and Gwinnett Counties.
In November 2005, we started our INS activity, participating four times a year at the INS ceremony for new citizens at the 11th Federal District Court. The Federal Court has on several occasions increased the number of ceremonies to six or eight a year. The Piedmont Color Guard has presented the colors at the ceremony during the summer session.
Our chapter is a recognized leader in the SAR and our members were instrumental in the founding of the Button Gwinnett, Captain
John Collins, Marquis de Lafayette and Cherokee Chapters. The Piedmont Chapter also assisted in the development of the Casimir
Pulaski Chapter. One of Piedmont’s founding members, Frank Darwin, also helped form the Blue Ridge Mountains Chapter.
Piedmont has provided state leadership with five members serving as state President and several chairing important committees, especially the Color Guard with Paul Prescott serving as Georgia Society Color Guard Commander for six years. The Piedmont Color
Guard has participated in over 150 events annually with over 500 participating Color Guardsmen in the past five years. The Speakers
Bureau and Classroom activity is second to none under the leadership of Jack Ferguson who annually provides a number of presentations to Middle Schools and Elementary Schools. The chapter has been recognized for its classroom presentations and other speaker
activities with three recipients of the Colonel Stewart Boone McCarty award.
Members of the chapter have donated generously to the NSSAR development of the Center for Advancing America’s Heritage center in Louisville. The chapter also donates from our treasury, and we are among the leading chapters in the country to do so.
JROTC has also been a strong point with our chapter. Originally we provided medal for schools from Gwinnett County to West
Cobb Counties and north to Cherokee.
Piedmont is indeed fortunate to have so many talented members who support our several programs tirelessly in promoting the SAR
ideals – Patriotism, Educational and Historical. Aren’t you glad you are a member!

Sandy Springs Mayor Receives
Award from SAR
A longing for self determination. Free
to participate in the process of government.
Mayor Eva Galambos was presented with
a Silver Good Citizenship Medal at a
recent meeting of the Sandy Springs City
Council by the Piedmont Chapter of the
Sons of the American Revolution. Piedmont President Allen Greenly made the
presentation. Through her significant
contributions to the community, Mayor
Galambos reflects great credit on herself
while inspiring others to be more responsible citizens.
As we celebrate our independence
this month, we remember the privilege and responsibility of citizenship
in this great country. The yearnings
of our ancestors produced the Constitution and the Bill of Rights:
Independence Day 2011
We have reached the letter “Y” on our
journey. As I was thinking about the celebration of our independence this month, it
occurred to me that the characteristic that
describes our ancestral grandparents is
Yearning. As a verb, it means to desire, to
long for, to crave, or even to covet. I feel
that our ancestral grandparents may have
experienced the following:
A longing to be free. My thoughts were –
‘free from what?’ Free from being rounded up by agents for the King and forced
into service to the State.
One:
Congress shall make no law
respecting an establishment of religion,
or prohibiting the freedom of speech, or
press: or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the
Government for a redress of grievances.
Three: No solider shall, in times of
peace be quartered in any home…….
Ms. Galambos has served as Mayor of
Sandy Springs, Georgia since 2006. She
has held various positions in the Sandy
Springs community before becoming the
first mayor of the city. She was the president of the Committee for Sandy Springs
from 1975–2005, which fought to incorporate Sandy Springs. She is also a cofounder and former secretary of Sandy
Springs Revitalization; founder of Sandy
Springs Clean and Beautiful; chairwoman of services committee for the Sandy
Springs Council of Neighborhoods; former chairwoman of the Fulton County
Public Housing Authority; and founder
of Sandy Springs Civic Roundtable.
Four: The right of the people to be
secure in their persons, houses, papers,
and effect, against unreasonable searches and seizures,….
Shown below from l-r: Jack Ferguson,
Georgia SAR President Bob Sapp,
Mayor Galambos, Piedmont President
Allen Greenly and Color Guard Commander Paul Prescott.
Two: A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free
State, the right of the people to keep
and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
A desire for self expression. Free to speak
and publish beliefs and opinions openly.
Five:
No person shall be held to
answer for a capital , or otherwise infamous crime………nor be deprived of
life, liberty, or property, without due
process of law………
A craving to have a better life. Free to
rise above the social class in which one
was born through hard work.
Six:
In all criminal prosecutions,
the accused shall enjoy the right to a
speedy trail
A desire to be able to protect themselves
and their property. Free to arm themselves against robbers.
Seven In suits at common law, where
the value….the right of trial by jury
shall be preserved…….
A desire for due process. Free to petition
the government when injustice occurred
and a speedy trial before a jury of their
peers when charged with a crime.
Eight Excessive bail shall not be
required, nor excessive fines imposed,
nor cruel…..
A desire to worship as they chose. Free
from the official religion of the State.
A desire for protection from false accu-

Flag Retirement Ceremony
The Piedmont Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution conducted a Flag Retirement Ceremony at the Northside
Chapel Crematory in Roswell on June 11, 2011. The award winning Piedmont Color Guard participated in uniform
along with members of the chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, Society of the Cincinnati and the Boy
Scouts. During the dignified service, Piedmont President Allen Greenly indicated “that a flag may be a flimsy bit of
printed gauze, or beautiful banner of finest silk. Its intrinsic value may be trifling or great; but its real value is beyond
price, for it is the precious symbol of all that we stand for and all that we have worked for and lived for, and died for – a
free nation of free men and women, true to the faith of the past, devoted to the ideals and practice of Justice, Freedom
and Democracy.” Below are photos taken during the ceremony.

light breeze. The food was catered by the Rib Ranch and included barbecue pork, chopped chicken breast, cheese potatoes, coleslaw, pickles and chocolate chip cookies for desert. Everything was delicious.
Members of the chapter, members of the Martha Stewart Bullock Chapter of the DAR and our special guest State Color
Guard Commander Ed Rigel, Sr. attended. We had 51 in total paid attendance and 57 in total attendance – a great turnout. I’m looking forward to next year’s outing. I want to thank Jim McIntire and Carl Bhame for all their hard work in
putting this social event together and helping make it a huge success.
On June 26th, the color guard posted the colors at two University of Phoenix graduation ceremonies at the Gwinnett
Arena.
Our next major event is the Old Soldiers Day Parade in Alpharetta on August 6th. I hope that many of you will volunteer to help out with this event.
The Piedmont Piper is celebrating its 100th issue with this printing. This is a great milestone in our chapter’s history. I
want to congratulate and thank all of the past and present editors and contributors who have helped make this milestone
possible. Great job!
