The Travaglini Estate, based in the heart of the hills of
the Gattinara region or Piedmont Italy, has been family
owned since 1958. Arturo Travaglini passed on the
winemaking tradition to his son Giancarlo and now the
company is run by Giancarlo’s wife Liliana, his
daughters Cristina and Cinzia and his son-in-law
Massimo. Some call Gattinara the most aristocratic of
Italian wines, as the region offers a number of
incomparable sensory characteristics which help to
make this great wine unique. The Gattinara is an
austere, noble wine and pairs perfectly with game and
roasts. It also goes very well with strong, well-structured
dishes and hard blue cheeses.
Piedmont is the most "Frenchified" of all Italian wine
regions. The long valleys of the Alpine foothills lead to
easier travel to France's southern coast and inland than
to the rest of Italy. It is perhaps for this reason that the
Piedmontese have long practiced the most refined wine
traditions of any Italian region. Terroir-based wisdom
trickled down from early French masters (monks,
typically) to this area.
Known mostly for their reds (but producing some
excellent whites,) from the early ripening Dolcetto grape
to the lofty, deep reds of Barolo and Barbaresco crafted
from the Nebbiolo grape, these wines are clearly crafted
using centuries of terroir-based winemaking.
