Major League Baseball in the City of
Chicago is divided geographically by
only ten miles, but the distance between
their fan bases is far greater. In its new
summer exhibit, EHM hits it out of the
park highlighting the longtime rivalry
between the fans of these two storied
teams. This cultural history exposé covers
all the bases of the crosstown rivalry to
examine concepts of loyalty and fandom
through videos of each team’s colorful
supporters; interviews with former players,
sports journalists and broadcasters; and fan
souvenirs and ephemera. Unlike the actual
game of baseball, there are no rain-outs
with this exhibit. Cancel Aug 15…Max 45.

invited his fellow cast members to his
castle for a weekend of revelry. When one
of the guests is stabbed, the festivities in
the house quickly turns dangerous. It is

Prepare yourself to be immersed into a world like no other – the world of Jellicle Cats.
It’s the most sacred night of the year for this tribe of felines as they prepare for the Jellicle
Ball. Every member of the tribe tries to prove they’re worthy enough to be “the one”
selected to be reborn in the afterlife and live for eternity in the glorious Heavy Side
Layer. Winner of 7 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Book and Best Score,
CATS is one of the most popular and beloved theatrical productions on the planet.
This dance-driven extravaganza is filled with lush orchestrations and heart-pounding
numbers including the show-stopping “Memory.” The costumes and make-up are
some of the most complex and beautiful in Broadway. Rest assured, the Paramount
team will create a one-of-a-kind environment that will transfix audiences of every age.

The journey of grief after loss is one of life’s most difficult
experiences, but we don’t have to walk alone. If you are grieving the
death of a loved one, please consider joining Carillon’s bimonthly
support group for bereaved adults and discover the healing process
within a safe, supportive and confidential environment. The group
will provide time to share stories, process emotions, learn new
coping skills and self-care practices. The sessions are facilitated by
Heartland Hospice Bereavement Counselor and Carillon resident,
Kathy Jarman. We meet the 1st and 3rd Friday of every month
from 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM in the Craft Ceramic Room. Preregistration is not required, but if you have questions, please call

Carillon Activities
Hard to believe this is September and Fall is right around the
corner. What a beautiful time of year for us in the Midwest.
I would like to recognize a couple of our quilters. My goal is to
share a bit of information about our quilters in future articles.
Penny Stromberg has been a part of this group for many years.
She is surely one of the more experienced quilters. Penny
put together the top for our Quilt of Valor to be given to a
wounded soldier. Once the quilt is put together then quilted
the binding is sewn on. The last thing to do is to sew on a
label. This label contains information about who the quilt is
for, the city & state and who worked on this quilt. Penny also
donates quilts sewn for women’s shelter, baby quilts and fleece
blankets, hats and scarves plus bibs for those less fortunate.
Sandy Migitz volunteered to long arm quilt this year’s Quilt
of Valor. Sandy is another VERY experienced quilter. She was
instrumental in teaching us how to make Pet Beds. Sandy also
delivers these beds to a Pet shelter in the city.
Sara Pitman is part of our quilters group. Sara recently
donated at least 6 shopping bags full of fabric as part of her
‘extra’ stash. This high end quilting fabric will allow us to
make several pillow cases and quilts to be donated.
A sincere Thank You to those listed above and to the rest of the
quilters who donate their time and talents to share with others who
are less fortunate.
Our charity projects include quilts for the Guardian Angel shelter
in Joliet, crochet/knit hats and scarves, pet beds for a near by animal
shelter and pillow cases for ConKerr cancer.
We welcome any unused cotton fabric for our charity projects.
Club Rooms 2 & 3 are open on Friday afternoons from 1:00 – 3:00
p.m. Come join us and see for yourself the awesome projects we
work on. We are more than a social group, yes we talk and laugh;
but we also TEACH, SHARE and have FUN!!
Out of consideration for sensitive members, please do not wear
perfume or scented lotions. Thank You
See you soon.

Life begins at 80+ - at least for Oury Johnson and acting as the
male lead in “Breathe of Spring.” His last performance was in
high school (a few years ago). Many many hours were spent at the
Clubhouse and memorizing the script at home.
Oury said he learned a lot and really enjoyed the experience. Our
family said it was an Oscar winning performance. We attend all the
Carillon Theatre Guild plays and now really understand how much
time and effort is put into each production. Thanks for making
Oury’s dream come true.

Words to Move You
I look forward to an America
which will not be afraid of grace and
beauty, which will protect the beauty of our
natural environment, which will preserve
the great old American houses and squares and
parks of our national past and which will build
handsome and balanced cities for our future.
President John F. Kennedy
Carillon VFW Post 12059 made two trips to the Veterans’ Home in
Manteno during the month of July and delivered to the residents of the
home two truckloads of clothing, books, VCR tapes, DVDs, and assorted
sundry items for the benefit of the residents. At the same time we delivered
two more power chairs (#22 and #23) for the residents’ use. Mobility
means a great deal to those confined to a manual wheelchair. The ability
to move around that large facility when you are older means an improved
quality of life. Just the ability to go to the commissary and get something to
eat helps the mental health of the older veteran. Two days after I returned
from trip #2 we were graced with two more chairs for their benefit. We
will clean them up and install new batteries in them and deliver them to
Manteno very soon. Thank you for your generosity and thoughtfulness to
our veterans.
The Veterans Assistance Commission of Will County had asked if we could
assist a female veteran with transportation to Hines Veterans Hospital for
her chemotherapy treatments as this was her third bout with cancer. We
are still transporting her and this should continue thru September. She is
doing ok and she really appreciates our attention to her comfort.

I’m hoping everyone enjoyed the “Love Stories” performed in late
August. The very talented Theater Guild group has done it again
and are looking forward to the next production-watch the Talk of
the Town for information about future performances. Following are
the 2014-2015 officers who were elected at the annual meeting in
July: Carol Roman - President; Kathleen Stevens - Vice President;
Helen Levy - Secretary; Eileen Pell - Treasurer.
I’ve enjoyed writing the Theater Guild articles all this time and
being an active participant in many productions but this will be the
last one over my name. Look for Helen Levy’s byline who will be
your correspondent from now on. Good luck to everyone and keep
attending our shows.

The Carillon Marketing Committee is working hard to further assist
CAMA in enhancing our website. The objective is to make information
and help more available to our residents; but, also, anyone surfing the web
for a great place to live will find much enticing information about Carillon.
Currently our project includes compiling a brief description of each of our
many activities available to residents.
Website Log-in Assistance
Our website has a level of access for the general public and another, more
in-depth, level for our Carillon residents. In the resident level we are able to
view community documents, minutes from meetings and other pertinent
information of interest only to residents. In order to access carillonhoa.org
as a resident it is necessary to acquire a password from the CAMA office.
Marketing is offering assistance to anyone who would like to find out about
log-in. The next scheduled time for assistance is Monday, September 8.
We are hoping to make this available on the second Monday of each month
in the Clubhouse in the morning for as long as there is interest. Also, if
you need help at another time call Adrienne Kuehner, 815-372-9699 to set
something up.
Website Message Board
It has come to our attention that there have been some issues with accessing
the message board. We are addressing the situation and hope to have the
ship righted shortly. Thank you for your patience.
Did You Know?
By using the SITE SEARCH option on the web site you are able to do a
one word search of all sorts of information. For instance, by entering the
word Bristol, you will see lots of topics of interest regarding the Bristol
neighborhood. You might even be able to locate someone you just met
by entering their first name or street name, i.e., enter Barbara and all the
Barbara’s will be listed. Enter the word movie to see what you get. Just go
to RESOURCES, then SITE SEARCH. Have fun!
Ambassadors
Our Carillon Ambassadors gave three tours of our community in the last
month. We were delighted to learn that two of the three interested parties
requested a tour using our website! This is HUGE! This means that nonresidents are viewing and using our website to learn about life in Carillon.
Carillon Brochures
Our brochures are available for residents who are selling their homes, or
simply for residents to give to their interested friends. Contact Rita Dubbs,
815-886-0115, to obtain the brochures you need.

If you are caring for someone with Alzheimer’s or a related
Dementia you are invited to join our support group. Here
in a friendly supportive environment you can participate in
discussions geared toward the needs and interests of individuals
who are caregivers, family members, or friends of someone with
dementias. It is a chance to learn more about dementias and
what to expect along the way.
Those with the dementia are also welcome if they are able to sit
in the enter the discussions and benefit from the group. They
do not have to discussions if they are not comfortable or able
to do so.
Our support group is an opportunity to learn from and share
with others who are experiencing the same situations in their
interactions with someone with dementia. A support group helps
individuals understand that they are not alone in their situation
and that others do understand and can often offer suggestions
that may help. And it is comforting to know someone will listen
and understand.

Body position is important to keep our bodies healthy. These are
a few helpful tips. Reduce neck strain. Devices such as document
holders attached to computer monitors keep your head positioned
at eye-level, along with hands-free telephone headsets. Computer
monitors should be located 20 to 26 inches from your upper body.
The top of the monitor is even with the top of your head, maintains
an optimal position. The elbows should be positioned at a right angle,
with relaxed wrists. Prolonged positioning. Sitting, standing and
lying too long are stressful to the back. While in the same position,
the muscles in the back work hard to support the body. Alternating
positions allows the relief and helps with circulation. Tip~ Move
every half hour. Lighten the load. Make heavy loads easier; engage
your upper back muscles before lifting. This is achieved by pulling
your shoulder blades down and back to employ the large muscles of
the upper back. Which can alleviates stress on the shoulders. Hold
items close to the body, it reduces joint stress. More joint safety,
slide objects whenever possible. Remember, the first hour after
being awake NEVER engage in strenuous activity. This includes
vacuuming or lifting heavy objects. Lose weight; each pound
gained over our ideal weight can create four times the stress on our
knees. Research proves that losing 11 pounds improves joint health
and cuts the risk of osteoarthritis of the knee by 50 percent. Turn
off the TV. Television is a sedentary activity that contributes to a
slower metabolism and overeating. Build stronger bones. A diet
rich in calcium can help to maintain good bone health. Sources of
calcium milk, yogurt, broccoli, kale, figs, and salmon. Soft drinks
and caffeine can diminish bone density. Walking, running, aerobics,
stepping or dance can improve bone health. Strength training has
positive effects. Add color to your diet. Research suggests vitamin
C and other antioxidants can be credited for reducing the risk of
osteoarthritis. Eat fruits and veggies. Keep active. A variety of
exercise offers different benefits. Swimming and aquatic exercises
increase mobility and circulation but not bone density.
Warm up. Warming up the body before exercise can be compared
to car in the winter. For it to run smoothly, start slowly and get
up to speed only after your muscles and joints have had time to
get warm. Stretching is beneficial only after body temperature
is elevated. Stretch at the conclusion of a workout. Cool Down
MOST Important. Slow down before stopping, to safely allow the
blood supply to gradually return to the heart. Develop a strong
core. Back and abdominal muscles are essential to great strength and
balance. Studies prove that good posture is a key to preventing falls.
Get professional help. Wednesday at Noon or Saturday mornings
at 10:15 am stop by the fitness center. Find out how to avoid injury
and undue joint stress. Exercise with improper technique is often
worse than not exercising. Think effectiveness and safety!
We are going to start 2015 with a clean calendar. All dates and

OUR “HONOR FLIGHT” VETERAN SHARES HIS
EXPERIENCE
Our neighbor, Peter Ortega (on Tall Pines), was one of the
veterans on the most recent ‘Honor Flight Chicago’. Following
are his memories of that special day.
DATES TO REMEMBER:
Men’s Breakfast, Thursday, September 18, 9 AM, at the Southern
Belle in Plainfield.
Women’s Brunch, TBA. Linda will have information and a signup sheet at the upcoming Homeowners Meeting.
“I had the privilege to go to Washington, D.C. on the Honor
Flight. My daughter, Kathy, had been suggesting that I do this
for about 5 years. Finally, I went on July 30, 2014.
Andover Homeowners’ Meeting, Tuesday, September 2, at 7
PM in the Clubhouse.
Until next month,
Jeanne Garritano
(see directory for contact information)
“It was a wonderful experience. At Dulles Airport, in Washington,
D.C., we were greeted by about 1,000 flag-waving people. The
day was spent visiting a number of famous memorials; including
the Air and Space Museum.
“Comfortable buses were the means of transportation. There were
94 vets on this flight, and each had a companion. I was thrilled
that my companion was my son, Jim. What a wonderful and
thrilling day.
“Upon returning to Chicago, we were met by even larger crowds,
bands, bag-pipers, and relatives. All nine of my children were
there to greet me. Even tiny toddlers wanted to shake our hands.
There was hardly a dry eye in the crowd.
“I’ll always remember this as a wonderful day in my mind’s
‘Book of Memories’.

STILL MORE HUMOR FROM JEAN BURKHARDT: I feel
like my body has gotten totally out of shape, so I got my doctor’s
permission to join a fitness club and start exercising. I decided
to take an aerobics class for seniors, I bent, twisted, gyrated,
jumped up and down, and perspired for an hour. But, by the
time I got my leotards on, the class was over!!

Jeanne M. Zabelny, born in Torino, Italy, was adopted by
Dr. William and Mary Blatnik as a young girl and grew up in
Lockport, Illinois. She attended the Lockport school system and
in 1974 graduated from St. Francis Academy in Joliet. Jeanne
was an avid youth golfer and won many awards. She received
an associate degree from Joliet Junior College and afterwards a
BA degree from Illinois State University majoring in education.
During the summers, while attending ISU, Jeanne worked for
the Illinois Conservation Department where she was in charge of
the brooder houses for game pheasants. For over 30 years Jeanne
has worked for various schools districts in special education,
grades kindergarten to 3. The schools were: Haskins School
in Sandwich, Ludwig School in Lockport, Central School in
Ottawa, and Lincoln School in Plainfield where she retired
in 2012. Her classrooms consisted of children with autism,
ADHD, downs syndrome, learning disabilities, social/emotional
disorders, and otherwise mentally impaired. In addition to
teaching she was a mentor to student teachers and new teachers
and conducted a Rainbow Class helping children deal with death
divorce and other traumatic issues. Current enjoyment includes
swimming and reading. She also does private special education
tutoring and is a volunteer reader with children at Lakewood
Falls Elementary School.
Edward C. Zabelny (Ed) was born and raised on the north side of
12
Chicago just 3 blocks from Wrigley Field. He graduated from St.
Mary of the Lake Elementary School and Holy Name Cathedral
High School (1967). Ed participated in ice hockey, floor hockey,
basketball, and golf for various Park District, Boys Club, and
school teams. During high school he worked at a hardware store
as well as at Wrigley Field for Cubs and Bears games. Afterwards,
while working at the Federal Reserve Bank, he completed a
course at the College of Automation Trade School and began a
lifelong interest in computer systems. At age of 19 Ed enlisted
in the Navy, was deployed to Vietnam, and afterwards various
other tours until he was honorably discharged with a rank of First
Class Petty Officer at age 29. On one of these tours, in Iceland,
Ed received a Letter of Commendation for his work in tracking
Soviet submarines. After the Navy he pursued a management
career in Information Technology at these companies: Chicago
Title and Trust, Ready Metal Manufacturing, Stiffel Lamp, and
finally American Service Insurance before retiring in 2009. Now
days Ed enjoys refinishing furniture and doing home remodeling
projects. He is a member of the Carillon VFW Post 12059.
Jeanne and Ed were married on December 23, 2002. Jeanne
brings 1 son and Ed brings 4 sons and 1 daughter to the blended
family. They moved to Carillon from Darien in 2011. Jeanne
and Ed enjoy the less hectic pace than that of the corporate and
scholastic worlds as well as spending time with their children
and 3 grandchildren.

Bob Faillo was on “HONOR FLIGHT CHICAGO” 7/30! He
had to be at the airport at 4am to depart for DC at 7am. He
returned home at 9pm. Bob’s daughter’s father-in-law, Joe May,
was on the same “FLIGHT”. When the 94 vets arrived home
(Bob & Joe were the youngest but there were vets in their 90’s.),
they were greeted by bagpipes, Great Lake Naval sailors, friends
& family of each vet. “There was hardly a dry eye.” Bob didn’t
get home until approx. midnight. Bob enlisted in the Navy
right after “Pearl Harbor”. Being only 17, his parents had to
sign for him. Bob was a SEAMAN 1ST CLASS RADAR MAN
on the USS Baltimore Cruiser, involved in the African Invasion
& then in the Pacific campaign. His ship was the flag ship,
with a 2 star admiral in command of an additional 3-4 cruisers.
The USS Baltimore was involved in 22 invasions. Pres. F.D.
Roosevelt & Gen. MacArthur were among the many dignitaries
who met on the USS Baltimore. I asked Bob if he got to meet
the President. He said he was running to mess & bumped into
FDR. Ooops! Bob said FDR said go on ahead sailor. Bob said
he must have shaken a 1000 hands! Having not slept for 3 days
(due to excitement) Bob said he was very tired by the end of that
day. Bob asked if you know of a WWII vet who has not been

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to our September celebrants: 1st, Ray
Riordan; 8th, Nick Ventresca; 8th, Ray Stephenson; 9th, Sam
Tykane; 13th, Karen Jordan; 27th, Gloria Ventresca; and
30th, Rita Moretti.
Lillian Floody’s granddaughter, Hannah Floody, who is a student
at Oak Park/River Forest High School in Oak Park, IL, also
Lillian’s Alma Mater, spent two weeks in April in England on a
student-exchange program. Hannah had the most wonderful
things to say about her experience and was very impressed
with the hospitality extended to her, especially by her English
“Mum”, who apparently treated Hannah like a VIP. To quote
Hannah, “IT WAS AWESOME”. Being the creative person that
she is, Hannah assembled a very specialized scrapbook that tells
her England story as it happened, full of photos, mementoes
and personal comments. Her proud grandma said it was an
“AWSOME” production. The exchange student arrived in
August for a two-week stay with Hannah’s family. She attended
school for one week with Hannah just as Hannah had done in
England. Hannah had put a little pressure on her family to
make sure they reciprocated in the same “awesome” manner. As
this article went to press, no results were available but it seems
as though Hannah’s experience in England will be a tough act
to follow.
We welcome our newest resident in Unit 207, Teri Hoffman.
Hopefully, we’ll get to meet Terry soon and perhaps learn more
about her in the next TOTT. Glad you chose Buckingham to
be your new home!
We’ve had lots of projects going on lately trying to get our home
in good shape before winter. It’s been a bit of an inconvenience
at times and the Board wishes to thank everyone for your
understanding and cooperation.
We have to keep a few folks in our thoughts and prayers as they
deal with illness, treatments, and recovery from surgery over the
past several weeks: Bev Grochowski, Elaine Conradi, Darlene
Neesan, Ray Stephenson, Pat Wilson, Ralph Murray, Maria
Melgoza, and Terry Ginnett and others who I’m sure I must
have missed.

at least as good! Bring your own drinks to the event, plus an
appetizer to share … but no chip and dip, please; we had way too
many similar offerings last time. More details will come later.
Also, save the date of December 11 for the annual Cambridge/
Aberdeen Christmas party. Diane is looking for 4 people to
volunteer for just 30 minutes a week pulling weeds at the
Silktree/N. Carillon Drive corners. She would also like to find
someone interested in coordinating some of our social events.
Contact her at 815-886-3759 if you can help with either effort.
The August HOA meeting covered topics such as: garbage fees,
trees lost to the big storm, shrub replacement, dissatisfaction
with landscapers, acceptable paint colors and street and driveway
repairs. If you want to keep up on issues such as these, plan to
attend the next meetings, set for October 1 and December 3 at
7 pm in the Clubhouse Theater. Board of Directors’ meetings
for the rest of the year are September 16, October 21, November
18 and December 16, all at 1:30 pm in the clubhouse.
You probably know that Dick Wood, who lived in Cambridge
for about 6 years with his wife Pat, and who served dutifully on
our Board of Directors, died in June. We will continue to miss
him, and we need to cover his board position through the end of
2014. Please call Irma Wegner at 815-886-1676 to get involved
with the board for a few months (or longer).
Please contact me with information for the next Talk of the

doors down from the Jewel Food Store at Taylor & Weber. We
will begin at 10:30 am and you will be able to order lunch or

you can join us for brunch.
December 10th, 2nd Wednesday of the month
This is the date for our Christmas luncheon/party at the
Bolingbrook Golf Course. Having it the second week of
the month will not conflict with the Carillon Women’s Club
Christmas lunch. We want all of our ladies to be able to attend
both wonderful get-togethers.
We wish to send our condolences to Martha Moris on the passing
of her brother. Our prayers are with you and your family.
We would also like to extend our condolences & sympathy to the
family of Lou Wagner who passed away on July 27th. He will be
greatly missed by everyone, especially “Buddy” who always came
to him and sat on his shoulder.
A belated Happy Anniversary to Les & Janet Bundrick on
their 50th Wedding Anniversary which was February 15, 2014.
Hope you have many more happy & healthy ones to celebrate. I
understand that you had a rather large surprise party which you
thoroughly enjoyed.
Happy 50th Anniversary to Charles & Jeanette Clark who
celebrated 50 years of wedded bliss on August 8th with a party
for all of their friends on August 16th. Many more happy &
healthy years to come for you.
I have been asked to remind everyone to tell their young visitors
not to throw stones in the ponds.
Please keep your news and tidbits coming that you would like to
share and I will gladly post them for you.

LUNCHEON NEWS
On July 22nd a ladies luncheon was held at Aodake Restaurant.
Thirty-five women attended and had(as usual) a great time. The
food was excellent and the company could not be beat. Thanks
to Bev Uluszek and Audrey Wesley for hosting this event. Our
next luncheon will be held on Sept. 23rd at Jameson’s Restaurant
in Woodridge. Hostesses will be Linda Brif, Norma Kelps
and Barbara Rabig. A flyer regarding this event was enclosed
with the August TOTT. All pertinenet information is on the
flyer. This will be our final luncheon for 2014. They will restart in March. Please consider hosting a luncheon next year.
Our luncheons are held in March, May, July and September.
Contact JoAnn Oswald to reserve the month you prefer.
SPECIAL CELEBRATION
Nance Nagy’s family celebrated her “big” birthday by surprising
her with a wonderful dinner cruise on Lake Michigan. Besides
the beauty of the day and family, she also won a raffle of a dinner
cruise on the Spirit of Chicago! And for one who was born and
raised in Chicago, this was first for her. Funny how we put
things off, isn’t it? Advice: DO IT NOW
TRIP TO REMEMBER
Five of our residents Phyllis Warwick, Larry Kamba, Art
Janowiak, Art’s daughter Michelle Greco and Dave & Diane
Painter recently went on
a trip of a lifetime down
the Rhime River. Starting
in Amsterdan, they
cruised on the new long
ship Viking Var making
stops in Kinderdijk,
Netherlands to view
working
windmills,
Cologne where they
spent time in the Gothic
cathedral, the 700 year old Marksburg Castle in Koblenz, then
to Hedelberg Castle and University on the scenic Neckar River.
The cruisers ended their spectacular trip with a few days in
Lucerne Switzerland where they stood on snow in the Alps on
June 29th. An enjoyalbe summer trip!
