Dampener at airport:
15 flights delayed
q Copious showers in city q Coastal districts get 60% of
annual rainfall q Water stagnation less on Chennai roads
NT Bureau
Chennai, Nov 2:
Waterlogging, a common sight during
the monsoons in Chennai, has significantly reduced this year thanks to efforts
by civic officials. Complaints releated to
inundation were reported less from various parts of the city this time.
A civic representative said areas around
Adambakkam and a few places at Nanganallur are completely devoid of stagnation
problems.
‘We have constructed enough stormwater drains in the low-lying areas and
also laid new roads before the onset of
monsoon. So far, there has been no such
complaints from the residents,’ he said.
Meanwhile, met officials have forecast
that rainfall will continue in Chennai for
the coming week as well. Isolated heavy
rain may occur over coastal Tamilnadu
and Puducherry.
As of Sunday evening, the city received
69 mm of rainfall. Coastal districts of the
State got nearly 60 per cent of the annual
passengers as to when their flight
will depart. Also, the airport seemed
to be more than crowded due to the
delay in the flights.
Gate nos 13 and 14 were flooded
with rain water which the authorities
cleared immediately. Normal operations resumed at the airport once
the the weather cleared.
The rain not only stalled the flights
but also the road traffic came to an
halt outside the airport due slow
moving of the vehicles that tried to
avoid the mess that was created
due to rain water and Metro Rail
works.

Kamal takes the bull by its horns
q Says ban on jallikattu should be lifted soon
NT Bureau
Chennai, Nov 2
At a time when there is a chorus for
lifting the ban on jallikattu, actor Kamal
Haasan today voiced his support for the
same. Inaugurating a photo exhibition
on the bull taming sport here today, the
actor, said, ‘many today think that this
sport is violent towards animals. But
that is not the case’.
‘In countries like Italy and Spain,
which are famous for bull fights, they
end up killing the animals after the
event. But in jallikattu even a scratch
with pin on the cattle would mean you
are disqualified’.
The actor, who is famous for the jallikattu scene in his controversial film
Virumandi, said, ‘influence of foreign
thoughts should not end up killing
the sport. Big heads should brood
over it and ensure that our culture

q Ancient town, which is new capital of AP, has Tamil traces
SRAVIA SIVARAM
Chennai, Nov 2:
The legendary city of Amaravathi was considered to
be the capital of Indra and
the Devas. Recently, the
historic city of Amaravathi
in the south, known for its
masterpiece sculptures,
was named as the capital
of Andhra Pradesh after its
bifurcation. News Today
travels through the Tamilnadu connection of this city.
Amaravathi sculptures
which were excavated by
the end of the 18th century
by Colin Mackenzie contained several art works
which helped them deduce
the dates and the period in
which they were created.
Most of these sculptures
depict the life of the Buddha and also Bodhisatvas
(previous birth of Buddha).

More is more
ainy days have begun and will continue for some
more days, it seems.
With northeast monsoon active over Tamilnadu and
neighbouring states, rains lashed many parts of south
India even as the weather office has forecast more
rains for tomorrow.
Heavy rains occurred at several places over Tamilnadu between 8.30 p.m yesterday and 5.30 a.m today,
reports said.
In Chennai, the residents were greeted by cloudy
skies with the weathermen predicting heavy showers
in the next 48 hours.
Meanwhile, things don’t seem to be looking very
good for Chennai’s own cricket administrator - N
Srinivasan. Reports suggested that the BCCI during its AGM on 9 November could suggest that
the incumbent president Shashank Manohar could
replace Srinivasan as the ICC chairman. Things
have got difficult for the India Cements honcho
ever since the Supreme Court asked him to step
aside from the BCCI top post in the wake of the
fixing/betting scandal.

from countries like Burma,
Thailand and Cambodia,
residents of Amaravathi
bidding adieu to the relics of
Buddha while they were being
sent to eight different places
after his death are all inscribed
in the caskets of Amaravathi.
Now comes the most interesting part: the Tamilnadu
connection to Amaravathi.
There is an inscription in
one of the caskets made
in Amaravathi which depicts the Pallava rulers
of Kancheepuram pay-
ing tributes to the ruler of
Amaravathi.
‘This tells us that the earliest
genealogy of Pallava dynasty
had connections with Amaravathi’, says Nagaswamy.
‘Two pillars which were made
out of Amaravathi marbles
are found in the shore temple of Mamallapuram. They
brought it here several years
ago after being awestruck by
its beauty,’ he added.
Recently, news has been
making the rounds that
the Andhra Pradesh government has written to
Tamilnadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, seeking
the transfer of Amaravathi
sculptures now housed in
Egmore Museum, Chennai.
V Balambal, retired professor of History, University of Madras, opined that
preserving masterpieces
from different states would
actually help in promoting
cultural unity. ‘Tamilnadu’s
artefacts are housed in
Bengal, Assam and even
Andhra Pradesh museums. Are we asking them
back? By doing so, the
unity among the States
will be disrupted. It is a
form of respect we show
to their state by preserving their antiquities,’ says
Balambal.
and legacy is continued. One should
understand that it a tourist attraction
and integral part of our tradition and
heritage.’
The photo exhibition showcases
jallikattu in all its glory and bravery
clicked by J Suresh, a renowned
photographer.
Says Suresh,’it is an integral part of
life for the people of Tamilnadu since
the Sangam period. It required the
brave to take on the well-bred bull,
tame it and win the people’s heart.’
‘This is an ancient sport in the
modern era. It is an heritage which
existed from Tamil classical period.
Like many say, there is no cruelty
towards animals. This just a brave
sport.’ said Suresh. The exhibition is
open from 10.30 am and it will be on
till 8 November at Lalit Kala Akademi,
Greams Road, Chennai.
leading to a lot of confusion among
the students and faculty.
However, colleges situated in
Kancheepuram district were functioning, making it difficult for Chennai
students to travel.
‘When all colleges have declared a
holiday, ours will be working. We have
to navigate our way through stagnant
water and traffic and we find it very
difficult,’ says Vaishna, a student of
a college located in Kancheepuram
district, but very close to Chennai.
The rainfall affected some more
parts of the city. A Councillor said
many areas in Valasaravakkam
suffered rainwater stagnation and it
would be a while before the water
recedes.

NT Bureau
Chennai, Nov 2:
A DMDK party functionary was
stoned to death near Kanchipuram
last night.
According to sources, Sangababu
(25), secretary of DMDK’s youth wing
and a resident of Mahalinga Nagar in
Nazarathpet, was in jail for the last eight
months for allegedly murdering his wife.
Police said, he was released on
Saturday and had gone to a bar near
Rangasamy Kulam with his friends
last night, where he was attacked by
unidentified persons. It is said that the
gang crushed his head with a huge
rock, killing him on the spot.
The incident came to light this morning, when people in the area spotted
the body and informed the Vishnu
Kanchi police. Sangababu’s body
was sent to hospital while investigations regarding the motive of the

The new bus route ‘20 D’ introduced by Metropolitan
Transport Corporation (MTC) has brought cheers in the
neighbourhood. The bus which runs from Ambattur Industrial
Estate to Thiruverkadu covers Mugappair West, Nolambur
bridge, Ayanambakkam and Vanagaram.
Kavitha, a regular commuter from Mugappair West, is
among the happy lot. ‘Earlier, commuters had to go to Ambattur Industrial Estate or Koyambedu to reach Thiruverkadu.
Now with the new bus route added, people’s stress and time
will greatly be reduced.’ says Kavitha.
‘Many used to hire a taxi or van to reach Thiruverkadu
temple. Now, it is very easy for them, since this bus route is
a shortcut for Thiruverkadu. It will definitely benefit all,’ says
Marimuthu a resident of Nolambur.
‘Moreover, the service helps devotees to go to other
temples in Ayanambakkam and Vanagaram. I think in future
this may be called as Temple Bus’, he adds.
‘There are two buses plying on this route already. But their
frequency was very low. With one more addition, I feel it will

While welcoming the move, commuters also demand
increase in the frequency of all the buses and also steps to
remove vehicles parked at various bus stops.
‘We also want encroachments on the Ambattur Industrial
Estate Road along this route be removed. Moreover, many
bus stops are used as parking lots for two wheelers. This too
should be stopped. If these steps are taken, then it would
very helpful for the commuters,’ says Suguna Ramanathan,
a commuter.

CM for long-lasting
solution to fishermen issue
NT Bureau
Chennai, Nov 2:
Taking exception to the latest arrest of six Indian fishermen by the
Sri Lankan Navy, Chief Minister J
Jayalalithaa has again insisted that
ceding of Katchatheevu islet to the
island republic was the root of the
problem and urged the Centre to take
concerted steps to ensure release of
all fishermen from Lankan custody.
‘I have repeatedly and emphatically
brought to your notice Tamilnadu’s
consistent stance about the unconstitutionality of the Indo-Sri Lankan
Agreements of 1974 and 1976 and
the ceding of the Katchatheevu islet,
which is root cause of the problem,’
she told Prime Minister Narendra
Modi in a letter, a copy of
which was
released to
the media
here.
The Indian
fishermen
were being
denied the
right to peaceful fishing in the
traditional waters of the Palk Bay to which
they have a historical claim, she said.
Jayalalithaa recalled that she had
earlier repeatedly taken up the issue
of release of Tamil Nadu fishermen
held by Lankan navy, following which
Colombo had agreed to free 86 of
them, while she had ordered the release of two Lankan fishermen jailed
in Tamilnadu. However, before the 86
fishermen could actually be released,
34 fishermen from Tamilnadu, along
with seven boats, were apprehended
by the Sri Lankan Navy in two separate incidents, she pointed out.
While fishermen of Tamil Nadu were
eagerly awaiting the arrival of their
colleagues, six more of them were
arrested early on Saturday, she said
with regard to the latest incident.
She also called for intervention at
the highest political level to bring
about a lasting solution to this long
pending problem involving the lives
and livelihood of hundreds of thousands of Tamilnadu fishermen.

‘From financial constraints to gifting other novelties, there can be

However, shop-owners say orders

WHAT NEWS TODAY PRINTS IS NEWS THAT COUNTS
Fishing for the Net
‘It’s incredible what people can build, and what love can motivate
us to build,’ Facebook chief executive and founder Mark Zuckerberg
exclaimed after seeing Taj Mahal ahead of his ‘townhall’ interaction
with IIT-Delhi students. He would also have us believe that the digital
marvel he has built is more out of love than desire for profit. To the
arguably most curious set of students in India, he said he was here
with the goal of connecting the 1.25 billion people of the country.
For that, he reasserted, Internet connectivity was a must, and he
was prepared to offer it for free through some of Facebook’s own
infrastructure as well as tie-ups with telecom companies. Facebook
needs the Internet, and telecom service providers need a compelling
application like Facebook to attract new data consumers. It can be
a perfect marriage, love or not.
For anything given out for free, someone has to pay a price. All
debate about maintaining Net neutrality and giving free access is
anchored around who will pay that price and in what form. It could
be higher costs for the paying Net users or restricted/slower access
to certain websites and services. Neither can be acceptable, and that
is what is making Netizens anxious. Fortunately for the sceptics,
the early experiments with free services have thus far not been very
successful, with very few takers and even less appreciation from
users. The targeted first-time users have been quick to shift to paid
services for reasons of quality. That is free market at work.
Under the circumstances, for now the government only needs to
set certain rules regarding what side-effects free services may not
have, i.e., the paying user should not end up suffering. This will
help avoid imposing any restrictions after services are rolled out.
As for universal access to data, there is an assumption that cost is
the hindrance. The mobile telephony experience suggests otherwise.
When someone benefits from a service, he is prepared to pay for it.
With a bit of monitoring, market forces may well take care of Net
neutrality.

Battery-free pacemakers
powered by heart
WASHINGTON:
Scientists are developing nextgeneration battery-free implantable
pacemakers that may be powered by
an unlikely source - the heart itself.
The advancement is based upon
a piezoelectric system that converts
vibrational energy - created inside
the chest by each heartbeat - into
electricity to power the pacemaker.
‘Essentially, we’re creating technology that will
allow pacemakers to be
powered by the very heart
that they are regulating,’
said M Amin Karami, assistant professor of mechanical engineering at
the University at Buffalo School of
Engineering and Applied Sciences,
who is leading the research.
The technology may eliminate the
medical risks, costs and inconvenience of having a battery replacement
every five to 12 years for millions of
people worldwide, researchers said.
About the size of a pocket watch,
pacemakers are implanted under the
skin through an incision in the chest.
Wires, also called leads, connect
the device to the heart and deliver
electrical signals that regulate the
heart’s activity.
The new wireless option does not
require leads because it rests inside
the heart. This removes a potential
point of failure, but the device still
relies on a battery that must be replaced as often as the batteries that
conventional pacemakers use.
The idea of heart-powered pacemakers came
to Karami after doing PhD
work on piezoelectric applications for unmanned
aerial vehicles and bridges. He
wanted to apply that knowledge to
the human body.
The heart was an obvious choice
because of its relative strength and
constant motion. ‘To see the heart
in motion - even an animation - is to
be awestruck. It moves significantly.
In turn, that movement creates energy that we’re just now figuring out
how to harvest,’ said Karami.
Karami initially designed a flat piezoelectric structure for a conventional
pacemaker.

Setting it right
Sir,
Scotland Yard has apologised for the unacceptable actions of some of its
officers during a Sikh protest outside the Indian High Commission last week.
Twenty arrests had been made after hundreds of Sikh protesters clashed
with the Metropolitan Police during a demonstration against the alleged
police brutality on community members in Punjab. One police officer was
taken to hospital with a head injury.
However, there were some reports of the peaceful demonstration turning violent after Met Police officers became heavy-handed with some of the protesters.
An incident occurred where a Met Police officer is seen to take a Nishan Sahib,
a sacred flag, from a protester, snap the stick and throw it to the floor. This is
deeply disrespectful to the Sikh community and is not acceptable.
It also emerged that police had removed kirpans, a ceremonial knife carried by Sikhs, from two protesters following their arrests against the orders
of a senior officer.
A social media group called #SikhLivesMatter draw attention to the acts of
Indian government’s atrocities which often go unnoticed in the mainstream
media.

to somehow involve a reference to the

Those living in Velachery, of course,

What is the difference between

How do experts read a weather
bulletin?
As far as India is concerned, meteorologists follow what is technically
known in the department as the TwoPoint Formula, which is:
Point 1: If you can identify the contours of the Indian map in the satellite
picture, the country enjoys some
weather that you need not be unduly
worried about.
Point 2: If some part of India is not
visible it means: either the monsoon
is active over there or the satellite has
not sent any picture and you’re merely
looking at a blank board.
But remember, weather listings this is the beauty of precise science
- are subject to plenty of last minute
changes. For a more accurate reading of the weather in your place, you
are generally requested to follow the
fundamental scientific procedure of
stretching your hand out the window.
This simple chart will help you get a
better idea on how to gauge the weather
outside when you put your arm out:
Hand gets wet: It’s raining.
Hand gets cut: You’re travelling in a
train, moron.
What if the monsoon picks up
and your exaggerated fears are unfounded?
The great thing about humour columns is they don’t have to contain
any truth. The only other thing that
enjoys such a privilege is, of course,
weather bulletins.

q Moody’s ups Indian banking sector’s outlook
ing operating environment, stable
asset risk and capital, stable funding
and liquidity.
Also stable profitability and efficiency and the government support
has supported a stable outlook for the
sector, it said adding the recovery in
the asset quality wouldbe U-shaped
rather than V-shaped, because corporate balance sheets remain highly
leveraged.
On the operating environment,
Moody’s expects that India will record
the GDP growth of around 7.5 per
cent in 2015 and 2016.
‘Growth has been supported by low
inflation and the gradual implementation of structural reforms. An accom-
modative monetary policy should
support the growth environment’, the
report said.
As for asset risk and capital, Moody’s
said that asset quality will stabilise. In
particular, while the banks’ stock of
non-performing loans may continue
to rise, the pace of new impaired loan
formation in the current financial year
ending March 2016 will be lower than
the levels seen in the past four years.
Moody’s, however, said the capital
levels of public sector (PSU) banks
are low and the government’s announcement of injecting Rs 70,000
crore into PSU banks over the next
four years is ‘clear positive’.
‘But this amount is still short of
the banks’ overall capital requirements. Ability to access equity
capital markets remains key if the
PSU banks have to address their
capital shortfall’, it said, adding high
capital levels are a credit strength of
the private-sector banks.
As for funding and liquidity, these
factors are credit strengths for Indian
banks because retail deposits are
their primary source of funding.

New Delhi, Nov 2 (PTI):
India’s manufacturing sector
growth slipped further and touched a
22-month low in October largely due
to a slower increase in new orders,
but firms hired additional workers,
a Nikkei survey said today.
The Nikkei India Manufacturing PMI
-- a composite monthly indicator of
manufacturing performance -- stood
at 50.7 in October, down from 51.2
in September, reflecting a weaker
improvement in business conditions
across the sector. A figure above
50 represents expansion while one
below that means contraction.
‘PMI data for October show a further
loss of growth momentum across the
Indian manufacturing economy, with
a slower rise in new business inflows
resulting in a weaker expansion of
output’, Pollyanna De Lima, economist
at Markit and author of the report, said.
Despite the slowdown in new order
growth, manufacturers recruited
additional workers in October. Employment rose for the first time since
January, although only marginally.
‘Undeterred by tough economic conditions overall, firms took extra staff in
October. This, combined with a further
drop in inventories of finished goods,
suggests that production growth may
rebound in coming months’, Lima added.
Big bale theory
Coimbatore, Nov 2 (PTI):
With domestic trade estimating
cotton production at around 400
lakh bales, India is expected to
emerge as the largest cotton producer in the world in 2015-16.
Cotton output in all major producing countries in the year, barring
India, has been anticipated to be
lower than the previous season.
As a result, China has had to
vacate its place as the largest
producer of cotton to India, according to sources in Southern
India Mills’ Association (SIMA),
the apex body of spinners in the
Southern Region.
Quoting reports of United States
Department of Agriculture (USDA),
the sources said global cotton production during 2015-16 has been
estimated at 23.68 million tonnes,
8.6 per cent lower than previous
season production of 25.90 million
tonnes.
Cotton production in China and
the US has been estimated to be
lower by 13.3 and 17.7 per cent,
respectively, than that in the previous production.

‘We have been continuing our
strong sales momentum and performance in 2015. The company
has posted sales of 44,138 units in
combined domestic wholesale and
exports in October 2015, recording
a growth of 73 per cent over same
period last year’, the company said
in a statement here.
Meanwhile, Tata Motors reported
one per cent growth in total sales
at 43,486 vehicles for October 2015
compared to 42,862 units in the same
month of last year.
Domestic sales of its commercial
and passenger vehicles, however,
were flat at 38,917 units in the month.
Its exports rose by 13 per cent to
4,569 units in October this year from
4,059vehicles in October 2014, the
company said in a statement.
In the passenger vehicle segment,
Tata Motors recorded 11 per cent
year-on-year growth at 12,798 units
in the month under review, compared
to 11,511 units, it said.
In commercial vehicles, medium
and heavy vehicles sales rose by 20
per cent to 12,504 units. The Light
and Small Commercial Vehicle sales
however continued to reflect industry
and declined 19 per cent to 13,615
units, the statement said.
Medical tourism
industry on a high
New Delhi, Nov 2 (PTI):
As healthcare turns costlier in developed countries, India’s medical
tourism market is expected to more
than double in size from $3 billion at
present to around $8 billion by 2020,
a report says.
According to a CII-Grant
Thornton white paper,
cost is a major driver
for nearly 80 per cent
of medical tourists
across the globe. The
cost-consciousness
factor and availability of
accredited facilities have led
to emergence of several global
medical tourism corridors- Singapore,
Thailand, India, Malaysia, Taiwan,
Mexico and Costa Rica.
‘Amongst these corridors of health,
India has the second largest number
of accredited facilities (after Thailand). The Indian Medical Tourism
market is expected to grow from its
current size of $3 billion to $7-8 billion by 2020’, Grant Thornton India’s
national managing partner Vishesh C
Chandiok said.
Bangladesh and Afghanistan dominate the Indian Medical Value Travel
(MVT) with 34 per cent share.
Africa, GCC and CIS regions
(whose current share is just 30 per
cent) present the maximum possible
opportunity for the Indian healthcare
sector. Medical tourists from these
sectors currently favour the South
East Asian medical corridors.
Chennai, Mumbai, AP and NCR are
the most favoured medical tourism destinations for the floating
medical population who
avail treatments in India. ‘While the number
of MVTs itself is poised
to grow at over 20 per
cent CAGR, Kerala needs
to focus on its visibility as
a healthcare destination amongst
other States’, said the report. Kerala
attracts only five per cent of such
medical tourists currently and has
the potential to increase its share
to a 10-12 per cent with a focused
marketing strategy.
As per the study, the key factor to
drive medical value tourism in Kerala
will be availability of national as well
as globally accredited facilities across
the entire state, an area where Kerala
lags behind in comparison to Tamilnadu, Maharashtra, NCR and Andhra
Pradesh.

We’re on cloud nine: Sania & Hingis
Singapore, Nov 2:
Swiss veteran Martina Hingis and
India’s Sania Mirza crowned a stunning year for their partnership on
Sunday by winning their ninth title at
the WTA Finals in Singapore.
‘To play in tournaments like this is
what we’ve fought all our lives for
and it’s incredible to play in front of a
packed stadium,’ said Sania.
‘We feel very fortunate. We’ve done
some amazing things together and
it’s the perfect way to end the year for
us... We’re on cloud nine,’ she added.
The duo, crowned the best doubles team of the year on Saturday,

Rosberg trumps Hamilton
to win Mexican GP
Mexico City, Nov 2:
Nico Rosberg put his Texas blues
behind him on Sunday to win the
first Mexican Grand Prix in 23 years
and show triple world champion Mercedes team mate Lewis Hamilton
how it feels to finish second.
The German’s fourth victory of the
year, and 12th of his career, ended
Hamilton’s three-race winning streak
a week after the Briton secured his
third title. On a sunny afternoon, with
the 135,000-strong crowd creating a
party atmosphere, the Briton was left feeling sore after questioning a team instruction to pit for fresh tyres after Rosberg had already done so.
The German, whose late mistake in Austin handed Hamilton the victory that
clinched the title, led cleanly away from pole position and finished 1.9 seconds
ahead after also setting the fastest lap. It was Mercedes’ 10th one-two in 17 races.
‘This is really the best podium of the year, what a place to win,’ said Rosberg,
addressing a cheering mass of more than 100,000 from a podium overlooking
the stadium complex.
Hingis said. ‘Sania just played out
of her mind - she was everywhere
today, getting everything back and
playing incredible tennis.’
Mirza said ‘everything, on court,
off court’ is working for the pair, who
end the year as the world number
one women’s doubles team.
‘These are the moments we’ve
worked all our lives for and we feel
very fortunate together. We’ve done
some amazing things this year so
it’s a perfect way to, you know, end
the year for us,’ she added.
This triumph is especially huge for
Martina as the trophy was her 50th
WTA doubles title, a milestone only
15 players have reached (Martina

‘savours’ special
win over Nadal
Basel, Nov 2:
Roger Federer mastered Rafael
Nadal in their first meeting in almost
two years to win the Swiss Indoors
final 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 on Sunday.
The top-seeded Federer ended
a five-match losing streak against
Nadal, including the last time they
played for a title in May 2013.
‘It was a very special day,’ said Federer, who won his hometown event
for the seventh time. ‘Probably it was
my best victory here in Basel.’
With the match finely poised in the
deciding set, Federer hit a series of
ground strokes for winners and broke
Nadal’s serve for a 5-3 lead.
Federer created his second match
point by meeting Nadal’s hard forehand with a backhand volley winner at
the net, and clinched it when Nadal’s
service return flew long.
‘I lost but I was close to winning,
very close,’ said Nadal, who still has
a 23-11 career hold over Federer,
including 14-7 in tournament finals.
The Swiss Indoors, where Federer
was once a ball boy, is now the fifth
tour event he was won at least seven
times. He has eight titles at the Wimbledon warm-up tournament in Halle,
Germany.

Tillakaratne Dilshan smashed 59 off
32 balls as Sri Lanka edged past the
West Indies by one wicket in the raincurtailed first one-day international in
Colombo yesterday.
Set a Duckworth-Lewis target of

anxious moments before winning
with seven balls to spare at the Premadasa stadium to grab the lead in
the three-match series.
Dilshan hit six boundaries and three
sixes before Sri Lanka floundered
while chasing the revised target after
the West Indies, sent in to bat, had
scored 159 for 8 in their 26 overs.
The hosts, cruising at 104 for 2,
lost seven wickets for 48 runs before
tailender Ajantha Mendis hit the
winning six off Johnson Charles in
the company of last man Suranga

The start of the day-night match was

New Delhi, Nov 2:
When the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) meets in Mumbai
on 9 November, it is likely to set some
major changes in motion.
According to a report, N Srinivasan
will be replaced by board president
Shashank Manohar as ICC chairman,
while the likes of Sunil Gavaskar,
Ravi Shastri and L Sivaramakrishnan
are set to lose their commentary
roles, as board officials meet at the

‘After Jagmohan Dalmiya’s death

The secretary Anurag Thakur and
president Manohar now enjoy the
numbers. Of late, the secretary and
president haven’t been happy with the
way Srinivasan has been representing BCCI at the ICC.’
There has been talk that there was
a difference of opinion between the
ICC chairman and the BCCI’s top officials about the venues of the World
T20 Championship in India next year.
Srinivasan became the first ICC chairman after the 2014 revamp of the
world body, with a two-year term,
but it’s the prerogative of the cricket
board to decide its representative. If
Manohar’s name is accepted by all
members, which seems a formality,
the new board president will serve

In case Srinivasan is withdrawn from
the ICC, the Chennai administrator

Lucknow, Nov 2:
The killing of 50-year-old man, Mohammad Akhlaq, who was beaten to

There seem to be new revelations with reports in the local media saying

Moreover, the media reported that it was an incident that was given a

That is not all, the reports said that Akhlaq had often travelled to Pakistan
but none had noticed. Also, it is alleged that he had links with the dreaded
IS, which is now striking fear in the middle-east. Also, Akhlaq had recently

It may be noted that there was reports in the media that Akhlaq was

come and meet Narendra Modi to
suggest ways to resolve the crisis
even as he wondered why the NDA
government and the Prime Minister
were being targeted over the issue.
On a day when writers and artistes
vehemently denied that Congress
and Leftists were behind the protest
that has seen several of them return
their State-conferred honours, Rajnath Singh also said that ‘returning
awards is not the right thing.’
Talking to reporters on the sidelines of the event, Rajnath Singh
also said that the NDA government
will not function not on the basis of
caste or religion but humanity and
justice.

New Delhi, Nov 2:
‘What right does Dibakar Bannerji

Khosla Ka Ghosla is not just his film.
All of us, Vinay Pathak, Ranveer

in the sultry June heat of Delhi to
shoot the film. And only I know what
all I went through to somehow get the
film completed and released because
Dibakar fell out with the producer. And
now Dibakar wants to be hero for the
freedom of expression in this country
by returning his National award?
Dibakar didn’t see his freedom being
thwarted when he wasn’t allowed to
complete his first film?’ sneers an
angry Anupam who thinks it’s a fad
to return awards, and it will soon die
down.
Anupam is not alone. For, Savita
Raj Hiremath, the producer of
Dibakar’s directorial debut Khosla

was desperate for media attention.

Khosla Ka

the National

in 2006. Savita said Dibakar has no
right to return the award as it is not
his personal honour but a recognition of the team behind the film.
‘I am very hurt that my film has

Dibakar has no right to return the
award because this award is not his.
It is given for the film that includes
everyone actors, producer. How
can he return the award? He should

The producer does not think that
Dibakar’s decision is politically motivated but feels the director wanted

‘I don’t think his decision is motivated by politics. Dibakar is a good

chairman after the 2014 revamp of
the world body, with a two-year term,
but it’s the prerogative of the cricket
board to decide its representative.
If Manohar’s name is accepted by all
members, which seems a formality,
the new board president will serve
as the ICC chairman till June 2016.
In case Srinivasan is withdrawn from
the ICC, the Chennai administrator
will cease to be a significant player in
Indian cricket affairs for the first time
in a decade.
‘This could end the Srinivasan era,
for now. But in BCCI, things can always change,’ said a board official.
BCCI is considering the option of
reverting back to its previous policy
of allowing broadcasters to select
commentators.
The Indian board has also done away
with its legal team and is set to hire a
firm to look into their court cases.
Besides, the IPL governing council,
which is likely to meet on 8 November, is expected to look into the tender
process to invite two new teams for
the next two years to replace Chennai
Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals,
which have been suspended for alleged violation of norms.
It may be noted that Shashank
Manohar, who began his second
innings as BCCI president followng
the demise of Jagmohan Dalmiya,
has been a fierce critic of Srinivasan.
The current ICC chairman (Srinivasan) has been the subject of
Manohar’s scathing scorn and he
had insisted that his (Srinivasan’s)
‘autocratic behaviour’ had tarnished
the Board’s image gravely.

Debate over consumption of processed meat
Indians at lesser risk of cancer as they
prefer fresh meat
NT Bureau
The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), an agency of
the World Health Organisation (WHO), has stated in a study that processed
meat is carcinogenic to humans and its consumption can cause colorectal
cancer. Experts concluded that each 50-gram portion of processed meat
eaten daily increases the risk of colorectal cancer by 18 per cent. A lowdown on the report.
What is processed meat?
Any meat that is transformed through
salting, curing, fermentation, smoking,
or other processes to enhance flavour or
improve preservation. Most processed
meats contain pork or beef, but processed
meats may also contain other red meat,
poultry, offal, or meat by-products such
as blood. Examples of processed meat
include hot dogs (Frankfurters), ham,
sausages, corned beef, and biltong or beef jerky as well as canned meat
and meat-based preparations and sauces.
And, for Indians?
The association between cancer and red meat was
observed mainly for colorectal cancer, but associations were also seen for pancreatic cancer
and prostate cancer.
‘For an individual, the risk of developing
colorectal cancer because of their consumption of processed meat remains small, but this
risk increases with the amount of meat consumed,’
said Kurt Straif, head of the IARC Monographs Programme. Many
national health recommendations advise people to limit intake of
processed meat and red meat, which are linked to increased risks
of cancer and other heart diseases.
However, experts say that the threat is rather low for Indians as
majority of the people still rely on fresh meat, cooked in conventional ways.
Haem iron is the arterial component of meat. It can also
contain chemicals that form
during meat processing or cooking. For instance, carcinogenic
chemicals that form during meat
processing include N-nitroso
compounds and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Cooking
of red meat or processed meat
also produces heterocyclic aromatic amines as well as other
chemicals including polycyclic
aromatic hydrocarbons, which
are also found in other foods
and in air pollution. Some of
these chemicals are known or
suspected carcinogens. Cooking at high temperatures or
with the food in direct contact
with a flame or a hot surface,
as in barbecuing or pan-frying,
produces more of certain types
of carcinogenic chemicals, it is
reported.

Railways for
crucial win
New Delhi, Nov 2 (PTI):
Former champions Tamilnadu posted a crucial eightwicket win over Railways in
a Group ‘B’ Ranji Trophy
encounter at the Karnail
Singh stadium here today.
Resuming at the overnight score of 200 for 4,
Railways lost top-scorer
Cheluvaraj for 88 to the
bowling of Rahil Shah,
who got four wickets for
the visitors. Cheluvraj’s
exit sparked a collapse as
the home side was bowled
out for 240 in the second
innings, leaving Tamilnadu
to score 77 for a win.
Tamilnadu skipper Abhinav Mukund fell early
in the chase but Dinesh
Karthik and B Aparajith
took the team close before
the former fell for a wellmade 43. Aparajith and
Vijay Shankar took the
team past the winning line
and ensured that the side
got six points.
Earlier on Sunday, fast
bowler A Aswin Crist registered the best bowling figures of his first class career
to help Tamilnadu enforce
follow-on on Railways on
the third day.
