A message from your New Director….Hello everyone!
My name is Maryll (Mary-ell) Goldsmith and I am proud to be your new UFDC Director for Region 2N. My home is in
Sacramento, which is also the city where I was born. I live here with my husband, Michael, who is a retired railroad
conductor. We have an old dog, Casey, who is 15 now and two cats. Our house is full of antiques of all kinds; mostly
trains, Sacramento and California history items and of course dolls. I started my collection with five dolls, four from
my husbands’ family and one from my grandmother. My sisters and I all had dolls when we were young, but few of
those made it through time and wear. My collection is always changing but the core of it is made up of German
bisque and American composition dolls. I have given dialogues and seminars in the past with two of my favorite
topics: unusual paperdolls and the compo dolls of the World’s Fairs of 1939. I have also been introduced to the
newer BJD’s and now have a few Kish and Goodreau critters and dolls. In my “other” life, I am a part-time college
professor, teaching music courses at Sacramento City College and am also the Secretary/Treasurer of Local 12 of
the American Federation of Musicians. As a musician I play bassoon and contra bassoon for Sacramento’s
professional orchestra as well as others in the area. I also am a conductor of one of the levels of Youth Symphonies
in this area. I was asked if I had time for this job as well, and I said that I would make time. I look forward to meeting
as many of you as possible these next three years and sharing the love of all things dolls with you. By the way, you
may recognize me if you see me with some of my sisters. We like to attend meetings, luncheons and conventions
together whenever we can. There are four of us; Donnell Wisniewski of the Sagamon Valley Doll Study Club in
Illinois, and Jean Smith and Adeline Piper from the Sacramento Pioneer Doll Club. Say Hi! when you see us .
The 63rd Annual UFDC Convention
was held in New Orleans just two weeks ago. It was
quite an experience being back in the Crescent City.
I thought I was ready for the weather, but some of
those afternoon storms were beyond impressive.
Since this was the first 4 day convention in a long
time, there was a lot going on all the time. The helper
room was the first to get our attention. My sisters and I
started helping with the set-up and Adeline put in
many more hours there. Donnell and Jean spent a lot
of their time at the registration desk. I still had to
assemble the items for the workshop I was presenting,
so our room was chaotic for a time. We all did manage
to get to the Riverwalk to eat, drink and shop.
Back at the hotel, things got into full swing very
quickly with seminars, workshops, meal events,
competitive exhibit entries and the set-up of the
special exhibits. Those exhibits were fabulous, by the
way, and it was fun to spend time there. After the
opening program the salesroom had its grand
opening. The room was laid out well and the street
signs were a great help when going back to see if that
certain thing was still waiting for you to take home.
I attended one luncheon and one dinner and
the souvenirs from those are wonderful. At this writing
I am still waiting for a box I shipped home to see what
other treasurers I packed in it. The wayward box went
to Texas and then back to New Orleans. The latest
has it going through Mississippi and Missouri. I do
hope it makes it home someday soon. (continued)

(convention continued)
There were many free programs to attend and quite
a few gatherings of special doll groups. One of
those gatherings was the Ann Estelle gathering. My
sister Donnell lead the group and one goal of the
evening was to raise money for the Becky Wallace
Scholarship Fund. Both this event and Region 3’s
meeting raised over $600 to contribute to the Fund.
One highlight of the Ann Estelle gathering was
when Robert Tonner joined us. He took questions
and spoke a little about his new products.
The Annual meeting moved along at a fine
pace Thursday morning and then we viewed the
preview of next years’ convention, to be held in
Washington DC. After that we broke for lunch and
then we were ready for the afternoon’s events.
The competitive exhibits were great to see
and the “mystery” doll display was an added
attraction this year. Those who entered dolls in this
category received cards with suggestions of what
the doll could be. My next event was the Board
meeting Friday morning and then we all got ready
for the Banquet. The surprise for most of us was
the dancers in their feathery (and hot) costumes.
They had many followers as they moved around the
room. They were more than happy to poise for
pictures with us.
The souvenir doll was very well received.
She is a cute Just Me by Alice Leverett and the
Vogue Doll Company. This was a great end to a
fast paced convention. Now, on to Washington DC
where I hope to see many of you as well.
