Like most vegetation indices, the NDVI is a ratio between two bands, specifically the red and near infrared (NIR) bands. The chlorophyll in plants absorb 80-90% of the visible portion of the EM spectrum if the Polokwane vegetation is green and healthy. The red light is absorbed for photosynthesis. And 40-50% of the NIR energy is reflected by the cells walls in healthy vegetation. So in contrast, dead vegetation reflects more of the visible light and absorbs more in the NIR portion of the spectrum than green vegetation.
