Moses and the Red Sea
Nine-year-old Joey was asked by his Mother what he had learned in Sunday School. “Well,
Mom, our teacher told us how God sent Moses behind enemy lines on a rescue mission to lead the
Israelites out of Egypt. When he got to the Red Sea, he had his army build a pontoon bridge and all
the people walked across safely. Then he radioed headquarters for reinforcements. They sent bombers
to blow up the bridge and all the Israelites were saved.”
Now Joey, is that really what your teacher taught you?” his Mother asked.
“Well, no, Mom. But, if I told it the way the teacher did, you’d never believe it!”
d
All Men/All Girls
When my daughter, Kelli, said her bedtime prayers, she would bless every family member,
every friend, and every animal (current and past). For several weeks, after we had finished the nightly
prayer, Kelli would say, “And all girls.” This soon became part of her nightly routine, to include this
closing. My curiosity got the best of me and I asked her, “Kelli, why do you always add the part about
all girls?”
Her response, “Because everybody always finished their prayers by saing ‘All Men’!”
d
Say A Prayer
Little Johnny and his family were having Sunday dinner at his Grandmother’s house. Everyone
was seated around the table as the food was being served. When Little Johnny received his plate, he
started eating right away.
“Johnny! Please wait until we say our prayer,” said his Mother.
“I don’t need to,” the boy replied.
“Of course, you do,” his Mother insisted. “We always say a prayer before eating at our house.”
“That’s at our house.” Johnny explained. “But this is Grandma’s house and she knows how to
cook!”
d
Untimely Answered Prayer
During the minister’s prayer one Sunday, there was a loud whistle from one of the back pews.
Tommy’s mother was horrified. She pinched him into silence and, after church, asked, “Tommy, whatever made you do such a thing?”
Tommy answered soberly, “I asked God to teach me to whistle, and He did!”

Convention
Warm sunshine, beautiful horses, and nobels and their families. What a way to spend four days! Drill
competition was good between Zembo Mounted Patrol and LuLu Mounted Guard with Lu Lu coming out
on top. Zembo, however, came on strong with first place in the parade in their new uniforms. With individual classes we had Zembo, Jaffa, Syria, Lu Lu and Khedive. Khedive had their unit host breakfast and
did a great job as usual.
Following the competition we had our meeting and election of officers for 2011-2012.

In 1941 a group of approximately 35 members of Zembo
Shrine appeared from time to time on horseback and appeared in
full Arabian Costumes.
In 1942 this unit became a permanent organization at Zembo
Shrine. Patrol membership consisted of men of various riding
clubs as well as many of the Mounted State Police and all members of Zembo Shrine. In a short period of time the membership
grew to over sixty and choose the Arab Costume with flowing
capes of many colors, make up and beards as their official uniform. This was a great addition for the Zembo Parades of the late
40’s and 50’s.
In 1951 the first by-laws were written under direction of
Captain J. Forrest Hempt. It was not until 1965 that the official
parade uniform was changed to the English Riding Habit. Richard Guise, DVM was the Captain at that time.
In 1970, under direction of Captain Samuel T. Owens, the
Patrol formed the beginnings of a musical drill team with scheduled practices. It was during this same year that the patrol paraded
in Indianapolis and placed seventh in the Imperial Competition.
Since 1969, the Patrol has placed first in many parades at the
Mid-Atlantic Shrine competition in Baltimore, Virginia Beach,
Ocean City, Maryland, Atlantic City, Wildwood, NJ, and Pittsburgh, PA. It was not until 1974 that the Drill Team officially
entered the competition and placed second in Atlantic City at the
Imperial Shrine competition. The Patrol traveled to New York
City in 1977 for the Imperial Shrine Convention and returned
home with three first Place Trophies. First in the Parade Competition, first in the Drill competition, and the Most Outstanding
Horse Unit in competition at that session. Then at the Mid-Atlantic Shrine convention in Philadelphia of that year, the unit again
took three first place trophies. As a result of these honors, this
unit was invited to make its first visit to the Tournament of Roses
Parade in Pasadena, CA, on January 2, 1978. Zembo Mounted
Patrol had 22 horses on the street.
During the years 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1982 and 1983,
Zembo Mounted Patrol has placed first in both drill and parade
competition at the Mid-Atlantic shrine conventions. During the
bicentennial year, 1976, the ZMP carried the Bennington flag in
honor of this historical event. Again in 1984 this honored horse
unit competed in Boston in both parade and drills and placed
1st in the parade competition and again received an invitation
to participate in the Tournament of Roses Parade on January 1,
1985. The ZMP was seen by millions of viewers as they paraded
down the Boulevard in Pasadena. In 1989 in Toronto, Canada
these men and their horses placed first in the Parade competition
and were again invited to the Tournament of Roses Parade in
Pasadena on January 1, 1991. At the Imperial Shrine Convention
in Indianapolis in 1995, against 17 other shrine horse units, the
Zembo Mounted Patrol placed “Best in Parade” and was once
again invited to participate in the 1997 Tournament of Roses Parade in California. On January 1, 1997 seventeen members of this
honored patrol all riding their matching sorrel horses representing Zembo Shrine and the Shrine of North America took part in
this prestigious parade.. This was their fourth trip to the Tournament of Roses Parade. Under present Captain Roger Cackovic
the patrol recently switched to wearing a Maroon helmet in place
of the Fez because of the safety factors. The patrol’s membership
includes active riders and associate membership. Their appearance in parades and at local events always seems to please the
public who applaud their efforts.
During a recent trip to Tampa, FL for an Imperial Convention the Patrol loaded up their horses and visited the Shriners
hospital for children. The patients at the hospital were absolutely
delighted to see and pet the horses. The adopted motto for the
Zembo Mounted Patrol is, “These Shriners ride so the children
may walk”. The members are very proud of reaching their 70th
year and thank all those Mounties that rode in the years past. It
is fez-tastic! In 2011 Zembo Shrine will celebrate their 107th anniversary.
