This year’s reunion will be on Saturday, November 21st, 2015 from 9:30am -11:30am at the Doubletree Hotel in Tarrytown, NY. We have lots of exciting things planned, including a showing of our summer 2015 reprise video and presenting Project Morry with all of your Swim and Walk-A-Thon donations. We will also have raffles for free Southwoods apparel and free Winter Weekend trips! All of this, PLUS reminiscing with your camp friends about the summer and visiting with your favorite counselors! Directly following the reunion, we will have an informational meeting for the 2016 Super Senior families. At this meeting, we will have campers share their experiences from the 2015 trip and we will answer all questions you may have. Page 3 A Note From Andrea & Scott Dear Southwoods, Today is September 28th and yesterday we just finished our postseason programs for 2015. As I sit here writing this article, watching the sunrise over Paradox Lake...I am reflecting on this past season. We have received so many letters, emails and calls from our camp parents. These communications share the amazing growth parents have observed and all the fun experiences their children continue to tell them about from the summer. Interestingly, as our last postseason adult group boarded their buses to start to head back to NY, Boston, LA, Chicago, DC, Seattle, Europe etc, I was struck by the similarities in what they were sharing with us and the letters we get from our parents. It clicked why we have seen such an amazing increase of adult groups and corporations booking our facility and the programs we run. This postseason more than 1200 people have taken part in the magic that is Southwoods on Paradox Lake. Greeting each of them as they arrive and step off the bus, you can see that look in their eyes, and that "what am I doing here" vibe that we also see in our campers. By the time they leave, just like our campers, they are singing our songs and craving more of one thing...The Southwoods Way and our fuzzy philosophy. I stood drinking a cup of coffee with the NY director of a giant global company yesterday. I found myself explaining and sharing with him what he was seeing. He was amazed by the level of connection he and the other directors had been able to achieve in such a short period of time with all the staff. He shared all the high end venues, Aspen, Miami, Europe etc that they had used the last few years and was in awe of the level of "team spirit" the entire group was exhibiting after just 4 days here. The Southwoods Way is all about slowing down and accepting everyone for who they are. Growth happens when people are made to feel safe physically and mentally, they become free to take appropriate social and physical risks. And in doing this, they create shared experiences that bind them to one another. These shared experiences become a bridge to building solid and strong interpersonal relationships that will last long after their time spent here at Southwoods. These successes and yes even the failures, serve to make our campers of all ages more bold. They leave Southwoods feeling more confident and willing to take personal and professional risks. Below is a quote I got a long time ago, that I have modified for what we do here. I use this quote every year! "Each second we live in a new and unique moment of the Universe, a moment that never was before and will never be again. And what do we teach in schools and work. We teach that only the best get to play sports...that getting just 10 or so likes on a social media post means we are not popular... and that it is better to be safe than take a risk and be thought to be a fool in front of the office. When will we also teach what we are? At Southwoods we say: do you know what you are? You are a marvel. You are unique. In all of the world there is no other person exactly like you. In the millions of years that have passed there has never been another like you. And look at your body - what a wonder it is! Your legs, your arms, your cunning fingers, the way you move? No matter your age, you can become a Shakespeare, a Michael Jordan, a Michelangelo, a Mark Zuckerberg, a Beethoven. You have the capacity for anything. Yes, you are a marvel. And you also have the power to harm another who like you, is a marvel. We must not...we must respect and cherish one another. You must work - we must all work - to make this world a place that empowers its children of all ages!" Thank you for choosing Southwoods. We appreciate the trust you place in us and look forward to sharing another amazing summer with you at Southwoods in 2016! Love, Andrea & Scott Our Mission Statement... Southwoods is committed to empowering people. Our goal is to build confidence and self-esteem by reinforcing positive human values. We achieve that goal through cutting-edge programming implemented by a carefully selected and fully trained staff whose investment in children, like our own, is unparalleled. Page 8 Claire’s Corner As my 6th summer as a member of the Trek team, I have to say wow, summer 2015 was a great summer! Not only were friendships formed, adventures taken, and memories created, but this summer it was evident that a number of campers stepped outside their comfort zones and took positive risks! In trek our goal is to create an environment where the campers feel safe and confident to try new things, which leads to an increase in self-‐confidence and the belief if they believe it they can achieve it! I had the opportunity to witness campers afraid of heights push themselves to climb to the top of the rock wall! I shared moments with campers, who were nervous about zipping through the trees off the zip line, and with a few words of encouragement from their cabin mates, took the leap of faith and had the time of their lives! Claire Dunlap Trek Director When asking a camper how they feel after these experiences, they beam with confidence as they reply, “That was awesome! Thank you!” These campers are examples that not only is it ok to take positive risks, but it’s necessary for our growth as an individual. That with courage, confidence, and determination, we can take the leap of faith, and have the time of our lives! Winter Weekend 2016 Mark your calendars for this weekend of extreme fun! Girls Side “There’s power in looking silly and not caring that you do.” Amy Poehler is not only a hilarious actress and comedian, but she is also a great female role model. She probably didn’t have camp in mind when she said the above quote, but I think it fits camp perfectly. Camp is a place where you can come and be yourself, whatever that means to you. If you want to be an engineer for the day, building with legos or constructing rockets, you have that opportunity. Or maybe you’d rather hang out on Paradox Lake all day, sailing, kayaking, or water skiing. You can do that too! Be in the play even if you’re not the best singer. Get on stage, “whip and nae nae,” play guitar at campfire, or “show us how to get down” in the middle of evening line up. Every single day at camp presents new opportunities and we encourage you, the camper, to be whatever you want to be in the moment. Lauren Hohman Girl’s Side At Southwoods, it’s not just about trying new things or looking silly. No, it’s about Head Counselor providing the opportunity to try new things and look silly while creating an emotionally safe environment, so campers can have a carefree attitude while participating and enjoying each moment. Sure, there’s power in having the confidence to even get on stage and look silly... but more importantly, there’s power in not caring that you look silly. Our campers (and staff) are each other’s support system. We are one big team-‐ the Southwoods team. It’s a powerful team! One that will support you no matter how silly you look. My challenge to you this winter is to be silly. Remember the feeling you get at camp when you put your inhibitions aside and just enjoy the moment. Be you, whatever that means to you, and challenge yourself to be the best you that you can possibly be. Line Up! Boys Side As summer 2015 has ended, we find ourselves with a wonderful opportunity to see our friends that made this summer so special! This November marks the 18th annual Southwoods reunion. There is so much that we will have to reminisce about, as this summer was full of amazing FUN! We fine tuned our wake-‐surfing skills on Paradox Lake, watched in awe as fireworks filled the sky, laughed as our counselors tried their best to dance at Boy’s side-‐ So You Think You Can Dance, and even found ourselves soaked in color at the color dance! Although these unforgettable events will always be embedded in our minds it’s the friendships we Johnny Reinke create that make camp the best! Boys Side Head Counselor At camp we make new friendships and build on existing ones that we will get to hang on to for the rest of our lives. How cool is that?!! Southwoods has by far the best facilities and programs in all of camping, but 2015 definitely reminded us that it is the people here that make Southwoods the best place in the world! We cannot wait to see everyone at reunion, winter weekend, and then back on the shores of Paradox for summer 2016! Until Next Time, Keep Dreaming Big! Page 10 Southwoods Unplugged!
