Head Coach Bill Dicus
Campbell University
16th Season with ASU
The 2008-09 season is Bill Dicus’ 17th year at Appalachian State University and his 15th at the helm of the
men’s golf program.
In 2008, Dicus led the team to a season-best finish of
fifth place at the North-South Intercollegiate in Jacksonville, Fla.
During his tenure with the men’s team, Appalachian has finished as high as fourth in 2001
in the Southern Conference, one of college golf’s most prestigious conferences.
Dicus led Bern Gregory (2000) onto the All Conference Team. He also led the team to
fourth place in 2001 in the Southern Conference.
While at Appalachian, he has also coached the women’s team for fifteen seasons. The
Mountaineers placed second in the SoCon three times, behind only national-power Furman. He also coached the league’s Freshman of the Year, Kelly Clements, in 1996. Dicus
mentored two All Conference performers, Merryll McElwain (1994-96) and Brittany Winterton (1997). He led the Mountaineers to consecutive sixth-place showings in the very
competitive SoCon Championship in 2006 and ‘07, the Apps’ best finish since 2003.
A native of Honolulu, Hawaii, Dicus is a class A member of the Professional Golfers’ Associtation of America. He received a Bachelor of Science from Campbell University in Buies
Creek, N.C. and has done post-graduate work at Appalchian. In addition to his duties at
ASU, Dicus serves as a golfer professional at Linville Ridge Country Club in Linville, N.C.,
one of the premier courses in the state of North Carolina.

Head Coach Heather Brown
Appalachian State University
First Season
Heather Brown was tabbed to lead the Appalachian State University women’s golf program, director of athletics Charlie Cobb
announced on Friday, May 16, 2008. Brown, a 1989 ASU graduate,
brings 18 years of professional golf experience with her back to
the High Country.
“It is with great pride that I return to Boone,” Brown said. “Playing
golf for Appalachian has always been a great part of who I am and
I am humbled to now be a part of such a great athletics department and special University once again. I am
looking forward to bringing my expertise and passion to Appalachian State University. I am honored to have
the opportunity to work with a great bunch of women and plan to work hard to elevate Appalachian State’s
Women’s golf.”
Since 2002, the Madison, Conn. native has headed up the Golf Juniors program at Richter Park Golf Course in
Danbury, Conn., where she mentored dozens of young golfers, coached high school golfers and taught several hundred private lessons on an annual basis. Additionally, Brown helped lead the Danbury High School
girls team to a state championship in 2004-05.
“It’s a honor to welcome Coach Brown back to Appalachian as our new women’s golf coach,” ASU director of
athletics Charlie Cobb said. “Her experience as a coach and a golf professional combined with her passion for
Appalachian made her a logical choice for the job.” In addition to her coaching experience, Brown has also
served as assistant tournament director for Richter Park’s annual amateur tournament, which raises as much
as $10,000 for charity, managed the club’s golf shop and has been a part of the President’s PGA Council.
Prior to her time in Danbury, Brown served as a golf professional throughout Connecticut at Tamarack Country Club from 1994-95 and 1998-2001, Rolling Hills Country Club from 1996-97, Cabarrus Country Club from
1992-93 and Klein’s Driving Range from 1995-96.
As a collegiate, Brown played for ASU head coaches Tom Adams and Peter Rucker from 1984 to ‘88. She was
both the captain and team MVP in 1988. Her former teammate, Angie Ridgeway, is the women’s golf coach
at Southern Conference-rival Wofford College.
Brown replaces Bill Dicus, who coached both the Mountaineer men’s and women’s programs the past 13
year. Dicus will coach the men’s team exclusively beginning in 2008-09. The ASU women finished eighth at
last month’s SoCon Championship and returns its top seven players next season.

Draper Valley Golf Club
Draper Valley Golf Club is situated on land deeply rooted in primitive and early Virginia history. Evidence
discovered during course construction shows that primitive man had selected this site for settlement several
thousand years ago. John Draper and William Ingles were the first permanent settlers on the waters of the
New River originally settling at Draper Meadows, the current site of Virginia Polytechnic and State University.

A member of the Appalachian State
University community the past 22 years, Dr.
Kenneth E. Peacock begins his fourth year as
ASU’s sixth Chancellor in 2007-08.
Dr. Peacock, who served as the University’s Interim Provost and Vice Chancellor
for Academic Affairs during the 2003-04
academic year and was the Dean of Appalachian’s Walker College of Business from
1992-2003, assumed the office of Chancellor
on July 1, 2004.
During his 11-year tenure as Dean, Dr.
Peacock introduced numerous initiatives
that enhanced the college’s academic
and financial stature. Among his many
accomplishments as dean were securing
a financial commitment from prominent
businesswoman and civic leader Thelma C.
Raley to name the building that currently
houses the Walker College of Business and
endowing a lecture series in honor of former
State Treasurer Harlan E. Boyles.
Dr. Peacock also developed an international program in partnership with Fudan
University in Shanghai, China, to help
students understand the challenges and
opportunities of doing business in Asia. As
the Walker College of Business Dean, he also
established the Dean’s Council of Student
Advisors and a Business Advisory Council,
composed of 25 business leaders who meet
once a semester to review programs and to
anticipate the needs of the College.
He guided the college to reaffirmation of
accreditation by the Association to Advance
College Schools of Business (AACSB International) in April, 1998. The AACSB’s Visitation
Team awarded ASU’s Walker College of Business nine commendations of strengths and
innovations during the reaffirmation.
Chancellor Peacock arrived at Appalachian in 1983 as a faculty member in the
Walker College of Business and began
teaching undergraduate and graduate
courses in accounting and taxation. He was
promoted to Assistant Dean in 1987 and Associate Dean in 1989, before assuming the
role of Dean in 1992.
Prior to his arrival in Boone, he was a
faculty member at the University of Virginia,
from 1980-83, where he taught, primarily, taxation classes and served as faculty
advisor for many student organizations. He
also co-authored an Instructor’s Manual to
accompany West’s Intermediate Accounting
textbook and helped create an Investment
and Tax Planning Seminar offered through
UVA’s Division of Continuing Education.
Upon receiving a B.S. in accounting
from Mars Hill College in 1970, Chancellor
Peacock worked for Price Waterhouse and
Company in Winston-Salem and Charlotte,
N.C., while teaching taxation classes on
a part-time basis at Winston-Salem State
University.
In 1975, Dr. Peacock moved to Baton
Rouge, La., where he earned Master’s (1977)
and PhD. (1979) degrees in accounting from
Louisiana State University. During his time
at LSU, he helped develop a pair of training courses, funded and published by the
Louisiana State Board of Regents for Higher
Education, and taught throughout the state.
An active member of the academic and local communities, Chancellor Peacock serves
on the Boards of Directors of the Investment
Advisory Committee for AACSB International, the Watauga Medical Center Foundation,
and the Grandfather Home for Children.
He is involved in numerous civic programs
and activities. In 1995, Governor Jim Hunt
appointed Peacock as one of just 25 North
Carolinians to participate in the inaugural
Leadership North Carolina program.
Chancellor Peacock is married to the former Rosanne Barkley of Winston-Salem, N.C.
They have two sons: Chris, 30, and Brian, 26.

FROM THE CHANCELLOR ...
It’s a great time to be a Mountaineer! After one of the most successful athletic years in school history,
Appalachian enjoys the spotlight that continues to shine on this quality university as a result of the
strides its student-athletes and our athletic department have made in the past year.
The outpouring of pride and support shown by alumni and friends demonstrates just how important
athletics are to building a sense of community, university spirit, and alumni traditions. I am pleased that
our success has reconnected so many people to their alma mater. It also has reminded them of the daily
commitment Appalachian’s student-athletes make on the playing field and in the classroom.
That commitment to balancing academic and extracurricular activities underscores why so many young
people choose Appalachian: They seek a quality education that will prepare them for a successful life
and career.
Appalachian’s faculty have developed rigorous and relevant academic programs. Our university provides small classes and opportunities for students to get to know their professors. Appalachian offers a
superb education that prepares our students for leadership roles in today’s global society.
Appalachian is equally committed to fueling the economy of Western North Carolina. To meet the state’s
changing economy, Appalachian has worked with industry leaders to add new degree programs to
bolster the work force; for example, a nursing program starts Fall 2006 and a professional science master’s degree in applied physics should begin in Fall 2007. Another example is the Appalachian Regional
Development Institute, which uses university resources to help government and businesses create
regional development solutions.
We are proud of our heritage and take care in sustaining the mountains we call home. Our technology
faculty and the Energy Center at Appalachian conduct research into alternative fuels, such as wind and
solar power, to make our state and nation less dependent on fossil fuels. Our Teaching and Research
Farm, part of the sustainable development program, works with local farmers on agroecology and other
practices to preserve our land for future generations.
Appalachian State University has all the elements that make a championship university. Thank you for
supporting Appalachian athletics. Enjoy the season!
Sincerely,
Kenneth E. Peacock
Chancellor

Years one and two and three at Appalachian State University have been an
unparalleled success for director of athletics
Charlie Cobb.
Among the many successes enjoyed
by Appalachian athletics during the first 24
months of Cobb’s tenure were:
•
Back-to-back-to-back NCAA Division I
football national championships — the first
NCAA football titles ever won by a team
from the state of North Carolina.
•
Shattering regular-season attendance
records at “The Rock” with an average of
23,169 fans piling into Kidd Brewer Stadium. during the regular season — 139.15 percent
of the stadium’s seating capacity of 16,650.
• Back-to-back Germann Cup Championship – given to the top overall women’s
sports program in the Southern Conference.
• Back-to-back Commissioner’s Cup
Championship – given to the top overall
men’s sports program in the Southern Conference.
• 35 percent of the athletics department’s students making the Academic
Honor Roll (minimum GPA of 3.25).
• Four teams (men’s basketball, women’s
cross country and women’s indoor and
outdoor track and field) earning public
recognition awards, based on being among
the nation’s top 10 percent in their respective sports based on Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores, with men’s basketball and
women’s cross country earning the distinction in 2006 and ‘07.
• The Yosef Club, which provides scholarships for student-athletes, reaching the $1
million threshold each fiscal year — up over
$400,000 from the year before Cobb’s arrival
and marking the first time in the Yosef Club’s
35-year history that it reached the $1 million
plateau.
Additionally, Cobb has gotten the ball
rolling on a $32 million athletics facilities
enhancement plan. New state-or-the-art,
on-campus facilities for ASU baseball and
softball are already occupied and projects
underway include renovations to Kidd
Brewer Stadium, a 100,000-square foot
athletics complex adjacent to KBS, and the
University’s first indoor practice facility,
which is slated for completion in 2007.
While Cobb is quick to point out the “total
team effort” put forth to achieve the many
successes that have been enjoyed since
he began his tenure as ASU’s director of
athletics on July 1, 2005, it is the experience,
vision and work ethic of the 38-year-old
Cobb steered the Mountaineers towards
new heights.
Prior to his arrival in Boone, Cobb was
a member of the athletics department
at North Carolina State University from
1998-2005.
A four-year football letterwinner at
NC State from 1987-90, Cobb served as the
Wolfpack’s senior associate athletics director
for external operations for the seven years
prior to his arrival in Boone. In that role, he
oversaw NC State’s marketing, ticket operations, media relations and student-athlete
development operations, as well as serving
on the department’s compact strategic
planning initiative, gender equity and facilities committees.
During his tenure, NC State increased
football season-ticket sales by 87 percent
and men’s basketball season-ticket sales by
121 percent. The combined ticket revenues
accounted for an annual increase of over 86
percent for Wolfpack athletics, generating
more than $6 million for the department.
In addition, Cobb served as NC State’s
administrator for baseball and women’s
soccer, tournament manager for the 2004
NCAA men’s basketball first and second
rounds at the RBC Center and the chair for
the southeast region of the NCAA women’s
soccer committee.
Prior to returning to his alma mater in
‘98, Cobb spent five years in Atlanta, Ga.,
where he held positions with the Atlanta
Sports Council, the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl
and the Georgia Dome. As an assistant
executive director for the Atlanta Sports
Council and the Peach Bowl, he helped
coordinate Atlanta’s bid for the 2002 NCAA
men’s basketball Final Four and handled all
game and event operations for the Peach
Bowl.
As sales manager for the Georgia
Dome from 1994-97, Cobb helped procure
events such as the Southeastern Conference
football championship, the SEC and Atlantic
Coast Conference men’s basketball tournaments, NCAA men’s basketball championship events, Georgia High School Association football playoffs, major concerts and
other college and amateur sporting events.
Cobb earned a B.A. in business administration from NC State in 1990. A secondteam all-ACC honoree at center as a senior,
Cobb was an academic all-ACC selection
and collected the prestigious Jim Tatum
Award, presented to the ACC football senior
with the highest grade point average, and
the Bob Warren Memorial Award, given to
the Wolfpack football player that displays
the highest integrity and sportsmanship.
After receiving post-graduate scholarships from both the ACC and NFL Charities,
Cobb earned a master’s degree in sports
administration from Ohio University in 1992.
Cobb is married to the former Lindsay
Brecher, who was an all-ACC goalkeeper for
NCSU women’s soccer from 1988-90 and
serves as a volunteer assistant coach for Appalachian’s women’s soccer program. They
have an eight-year-old son, Harrison, and a
five-year-old daughter, Branan.
