Tattle Tails November 2015 Humane A nimal Welfare Society of Waukesha County, Inc. GROWING – TOGETHER By Lynn Olenik, Executive Director W In this issue: Direct Line 2 Humane Education Highlights 3 It’s All About the Animals! 4 Volunteers 6 Thank You 7 aukesha County is a great place to have an animal shelter – progressive attitudes combine with rural values. As an educated community, Waukesha is leading the way in animal welfare. Families raising children in our area desire educational programs that teach values and give youth an opportunity to practice compassion, nurturing and empathy in a safe and engaging atmosphere. These values in our youth will in turn maintain our excellent community. As the public wants more from their humane society we, too, wish to increase the positive outcomes for animals in our community. n Visit us on the web: hawspets.org 701 Northview Road PO Box 834 Waukesha, WI 53187-0834 262-542-8851 We have received donations and pledges totaling $780,000 of the needed $1.2 million for our expansion: Help us obtain that final $420,000 so we can begin building this spring! Log on to hawspets.org, or call 262-542-8851, x112. Soon the population in Waukesha County will crest 400,000. We are Wisconsin’s third largest county, one of the fastest growing counties in the state. That growth means an increase in pets and the need for animal-related services. Waukesha County’s population is aging, along with our nation as a whole. This means more support services are needed for pets, such as a safe keep program that offers temporary emergency shelter for the pets of seniors and families in crisis. Animal hoarding cases have increased, putting a demand on our facility for intervention for these animals. As the economy struggled in 2008, HAWS made the decision to move ahead with our previous expansion using only funds that had already been secured. We trimmed the project back, eliminating some areas entirely. Now we look to complete the full expansion, with increased space for education, spay/neuter services, behavior training for animals and people, flexible crisis intervention space, increased cat accommodations and quieter, separated space for canines in need. T he bonds formed between animals and humans can be so strong – the one formed with me by our latest HAWS’ dog is somewhere between super-glue and industrial strength cement! Many dog owners can relate to this: I sit down, he’s right next to my chair. I get up, he’s attached to my hip. I head down the hall to the bathroom and he’s ready to assist! (No thanks, buddy, I’ve got this…really, I’m fine…) As annoying as that can be, I wouldn’t trade it for the world – he’s got my back and is there for me literally every step of the way. Oh, that everyone could feel that kind of devotion and love from another living creature! the importance of animals and pets in our lives! And it’s not just that bond between us that is so great, but also how it changes us and makes us better humans overall. Caring for another living being, advocating on their behalf, laughing at their antics and putting life into perspective via their view of the world – valuable life lessons are subtly taught every day by our animal friends. Now we’re asking everyone to Take 2 Steps for HAWS, to not only support our day-to-day work but to also make our upcoming, muchneeded facility expansion a reality! This expansion will keep HAWS strong and vital into the future, and allow us to continue giving and teaching humane care. In honor of the bond you share or have shared with your pets, please donate to HAWS today - just use the enclosed envelope and note “FOR EXPANSION!” And be sure to visit HAWS soon, to see the great things you’ve Name: 19657-01-MkeHawsAd helped usJob make happen. But there is also a need for “good news” and the chance to form special bonds with loving animals as the world around us gets more tense and invasive. Slowing down to connect with an animal is therapeutic; it makes us humane, and brings out the best in all of us as humans. Though difficult to explain, those who have been touched by an animal know the magic. It is hard to put into words, but there is a huge “something special” that exists between us! The Human-Animal Bond By Jill Miorana, Waukesha County Humane Officer H AWS asked writers contrib- uting to this Tattle Tails to focus our articles on the human –animal bond. It got me to thinking: How far do people get into their day before an animal crosses their path? My personal alarm clock is 93 pounds of love wrapped in red Bloodhound fur. Erlene has no snooze button, and her 5:45 a.m. wake-up “call” cannot be turned off for weekends or holidays. Her sidekick is a cat that vocalizes with odd, happy “chirping” sounds. (I have a kind of love-hate reaction to this early morning dynamic duo.) Recently my “clock” Erlene had a health scare. We went to the veterinarian, and thankfully everything turned out fine. But it was between her serious, acute sickness and her good outcome that I realized how much I love this dog. I experienced waves of emotions during the scary “in between” time. Fear and anxiety welled up as I realized she was What an amazing getting sicker by connection we the hour. More can develop with fear and even a animals. Alysha went out to Menomonee Falls for a juvenile goose that had fallen down the waterfall at Mill Pond Park and was unable to get back to its parents. Upon her arrival at the park, a Good Samaritan was in the process of catching the goose and together they reunited him with his parents. Noting this “happens all the time,” the gentleman invested in his own net in order to help catch them! Animal Rescue Team member Anna had one very eventful Saturday! First she received a call right after the shelter closed: A mother and daughter were outside when a tortoise wandered into their yard. It moved faster than they expected, but they were able to contain it. It was happily eating all the weeds in their yard, so they didn’t mind it being there! About an hour after taking the tortoise to HAWS, Anna received another unique call! A family was having a cookout in the backyard when they heard snorting...and found a big, pot-bellied pig. They were able to wrangle her into a leash before Anna arrived. Ms. Piggy, however, was NOT keen on travelling in a carrier, so it took four people, a leash, a snare pole and two corn cobs to get her safely loaded into the van! The owners of both pets were quickly located, with the help of posts and pictures on Facebook. Happy tails, indeed! Deer were quite active in Waukesha County in late summer. The Sussex Police Department called for Andres to assist with a fawn that two young men found in the middle of the road. Field Services Manager Mark spent hours transferring fawns to an approved two-acre rehab site where they will live and be set free next spring. We continue to work on the training tips to stop him from jumping up on people (as he gets so excited) as well as on doors to open them (thus Houdini as he disappears out to the yard!). Playing ‘chase’ after he gets his ball is quite fun; I’m not sure who is more worn out, Tom, me or Chipper! Just a brief update on Ingraham, formerly known as Usta: He is doing great! Immediately he fit right in – he enjoys going for walks, going to the dog park, playing fetch and tugof-war and snuggling with his humans and new doggy brother. And, his marking issue is getting better. For the time being he’s literally attached to one of us at the hip - this is really helping, and the accidents have decreased already! Yay! HAWS MOBILE ADOPTION CENTER HIGHLIGHTS Bringing Happy Tails to You! By Johanna Schmanski, Mobile Adoptions Coordinator The Mobile Adoption Team has the advantage of being able to facilitate many animal-human bonding experiences, much like match-makers! We begin by selecting adoptables that we think would do best at the particular event we are attending – if we are going to a school event we bring pets who are suitable with children; if our event is at a pet-friendly festival, an animal that is comfortable and acts appropriately around other creatures would fare best. At the events we try to decipher how a potential adopter’s lifestyle might mesh with an adoptable pet’s needs. What are people looking for? What kind of activities do they like and what are their expectations for the relationship with their pet? Sometimes we find that a HAWS’ pet not attending the event might be a better fit. We ask questions and listen, to make sure that the animal-human bond starts on the right foot. Once we have determined that the fit is right for all involved, we encourage the potential adopter to fill out an application and set up an appointment at the shelter. Want to host HAWS’ Mobile Team? Email us at [email protected]. November 2015 Tattle Tails 5 Volunteer News Would you like to become a volunteer at HAWS?
