Paul’s Comments
If you didn't get all the flowering plants
you wanted for your yard this year, we still
have a good selection in our greenhouse.
It’s not too late to plant and
enjoy all summer. Also, we
still have a large variety of
Bonnie vegetables and herbs
in front of our store.
I’ve started a Big Green
Egg email list to help interested folks keep up to date
on new offerings or events regarding the
BGE. If you’d like to be added to the list,
email me at [email protected] or call
the store.
A little over a week ago, my 11-yearold daughter surprised me with the note
and candy bars shown below. That really
made my day!

New Product
and Displays
I promise we are not moving things
around to confuse you. In a continued
effort to make sure we offer the best possible selection of products to our customers,
we are making updates to the following
areas of the store: mops and brooms,
caulks and sealants, glues and adhesives,
power tools, power tool accessories, audio
and video, drain cleaners and kitchen gadgets. Some of the updates have already begun and are nearing completion and others
will continue throughout the summer. If,
by chance, you stop in to find a product
you have used for many years is no longer
displayed on our shelves, be sure to ask
one of our helpful staff for assistance.
There is a good chance we will have a
comparable product or may be able to order the exact product you are looking for.
Two of the more exciting updates are
happening in the caulk and sealants and
kitchen gadgets aisles. In
the caulk aisle
(23) we received
new
racking
to
allow us to fit
more product
into the same
amount
of
space and it
offers better signage to aid in making the
right selection for your job. The update in
caulk has already been completed. Stop in
and check it out.
In the kitchen gadget aisle, you are going to be able to find a wide selection of
cooking tools and housewares from the
award-winning OXO brand. OXO Is all
about creating products to make everyday
tasks easier and more enjoyable. This is an
update I am really looking forward to as I
can always use more cooking tools to help
support my BBQ addiction. Look for the
larger portion of this update beginning
sometime in July.

Meet Our Friendly
Hardware Folks
Kailey Wells began working at Dave’s
ACE Hardware just a couple of weeks
ago.
A junior at Evansville High School,,
Kailey has participated in National Honor
Society, golf, choir and SADD. She has
received an academic letter and medal, has
been selected as a Badger Girls’ State
delegate, and has received an art award
and AP recognition. In addition, outsideof-school activities include volunteering at
church events and homeless shelters.
Prior employment includs working at
Subway.
Kailey’s parents are Jenny Schmidt and
Jason Wells. Younger siblings include
Liberty Schmidt (12), Brinley Schmidt
(11) and Promyse Meagher (6). Also at
home are Griffin (a dog), Charlie (a guinea
pig) and Marvin (a turtle).
“Making music” was listed as Kailey’s
favorite pastime, but she didn’t elaborate
on that.
In her short time here at Dave’s ACE,
Kailey found that she really enjoys meeting new people and learning more about
the many products in the store.
Following HS graduation, Kailey hopes
to attend a 4-year college.

Have You Considered Replacing Fluorescents?
Fluorescent tubes have long been the gold standard for lighting large areas. They
are less expensive to operate than incandescent bulbs and last far longer. But as anyone
who relies on large numbers to light a commercial property can tell you (our Evansville
store has almost 800 4’ tubes), they still have
some major flaws. For instance, the ballasts
that power the tubes have a tendency to burn
out at the most inopportune times. In addition,
as fluorescents age, they lose their ability to produce full light capacity.
So, it may be wise to start replacing your old fluorescent tubes with high-efficiency,
long-life LED tubes. These tubes are more expensive than standard fluorescent tubes
but considering the potential energy and maintenance savings, they’ll pay for themselves in the long run. Obviously a place like a retail store that has the lights running
for long periods of time will realize a faster payback than a homeowner who only occasionally uses a light. That being said, last weekend Dave installed these new LED
tubes throughout his home. He may not live to see the economic payback but he says
he has already seen a dramatic improvement in light quality and expects he’ll never
have to replace one again.
LED retrofit tubes come in three different types which are appropriate for differing
applications. The “plug and play” version is as simple to install as replacing the tube
but still relies on the original ballast to supply power. These are not our favorite type
because the ballast can still quit working when you least expect it. The “ballast bypass” style allows you to completely remove the old ballast and wire the new tubes
directly to the 120V current. These have an LED “driver” built right into the tubes. The
final style is called a “type C” and require the fixture’s old ballast to be removed and
replaced with a new “external driver”. This type of tube offers the ability to be completely dimmable and/or controlled by a timer or motion detector.
If this seems like something you’d like to explore for your home or business, stop in
and let’s talk.
BBQ Class Scheduled for Sunday, July 10
Here’s your chance to attend a 4-hour class which will be sure to improve your back
yard cooking. The class will focus on the preparation and cooking of chicken, ribs,
pork, and brisket. Whether you use a Weber, Big Green Egg, or whatever type of grill/
cooker, this class will be helpful. The class will be taught by the Fergolicious BBQ
Team, as featured on the hit TV show, BBQ Pitmasters.
The cost to attend this class is $99 and will be held at Dave’s Evansville ACE Hardware from noon to 4:00 p.m., Sunday, July 10. If you’re interested, you can sign up at
the store. Space is limited.

W.I.T. (Why Is that?)
The signs of spring are all around you
while strolling through the aisles of Dave’s
ACE. The yearly addition of the greenhouse
and Bonnie vegetable and
herb plants as you enter the
store gives a sense of spring
and warmer weather. Also,
a trip down Aisle 7 leads
you to a section of pond
supplies, which once again
brings to mind warmer
weather and relaxation in
Fred Maves
the back yard by the pond.
A selection of Aquascape components
and supplies is displayed on the left side of
the aisle. Shawn Wenzel, of Aquatic Innovators, is our local provider of all water garden needs. He is a well-known resource and
will help customers build and maintain everything from a bubbling pottery fountain to
an exotic Koi pond.
If you are new to the concept of water
gardening you will find that in recent years
there has been a ground swell of popularity
in this pursuit. Looking back to 1990, I dug
a rather large hole in my back yard while I
had access to a tractor and a back hoe. Back
then, finding one’s way involved a fair
amount of trial and error and relatively few
resources and suppliers. This is no longer
the case.
Be advised, however, that the time and
effort in taking on this project is much more
involved than simply mowing the grass that
previously grew there. Regardless, your feature will provide you with the endless pleasure from day one. Listening to the babbling
water or watching your pond fish frolicking
in and out of your water plants is way more
fun than watching your tomato plants eventually mature.
Before you start, begin with a good
amount of sage advice. My new favorite
saying is, “FYI is not the same as DIY”. I
have made more than my share of mistakes
in the process, but my wife and I thoroughly
enjoy watching our Koi every afternoon.
We even have names for our ten fish. “There
goes Ex-ray charging through the Arrowroot
plants”.
