Cottager’s Guide
Becoming an elected official has been a steep learning curve! My vision
was to strive for a more equitable distribution of services and tax dollars
throughout the RM of Alexander. In conversation with other Councillors
and our Reeve, we were able to develop an 11-point strategic plan which
we hope to implement. We inherited a few items that we are going to
have to look at with different eyes, and projects that we will have to be
reconsidering.
For instance, we have had a request to support the construction of a
Regional Museum in St. Georges. The cost will be in the millions and I feel
that having just completed the Library in 2010 (also located in St. Georges)
Council could not justify another infrastructure project of this magnitude.
There are far too many other important issues to deal with at this time.
We need to focus on providing basic services such as snow clearing,
grass cutting, road repair and drainage. The devastating effect of last
October’s weather bomb has created other projects that will deplete our
revenue. Ward 1 is physically separated from the rest of the RM resulting
in long driving times for Public Works vehicles to come from Powerview
to clear roads, cut grass, etc. I am striving to have a Public Works depot
built in Ward 1 which will cut down the drive times, the hours and the
fuel waste and result in an overall savings to the taxpayers. Within that
building will be Public Use rooms that could be utilized by the various
Associations in Ward 1.
With regards to Waste Disposal, although we have been assessed
additional fees for waste disposal, Council has decided NOT to pass that
additions fee on to our customers. We will include this new fee as part of
our general tax base and get back to basic services that we promised.
Another area of concern is reflected in the present municipal boundaries which are extremely disproportionate. Did you know that 48% of the
tax Revenue comes from ward 1, and 38% from Ward 4? That is 86% of
tax dollars coming from cottage areas while Ward 2 generates 5% and
Ward 3 only 9% of the revenues. It is our intention to prepare new ward
boundaries for the next election!
We have reduced our present commitment to Boards and Committees
resulting in a saving of thousands of dollars annually.
We are not going to fix everything right away, but we are preparing
long range plans, we are making changes and we are exploring all the possibilities.
Contact me anytime at [email protected] or by phone at 756-6319.

Councillor Ward 1, RM of Alexander

WE’RE GOING CARIBBEAN!!
Entertainment for all ages!
T
he Summer Winds Family Music Festival will be Friday, July 22 and Saturday July 23.
Friday night once again will showcase the talent of the beaches area beginning with
the return of our young guitarist and fiddlers. Making his first appearance this year is
Gord Hart. Friday night also includes Jarret Einfeld and Cam Trainor who enjoy playing
guitar and singing. Sean Brown a favorite from inside the gates is also scheduled to
play. Sean played the festival a couple of years ago and we welcome him back. Rock to
the closing sounds of Roadhouse, a Winnipeg band whose genre is classic rock & rock .
I’m sure we can expect a guest appearance from MC Graham Cameron.
Once again on Saturday children are invited to visit the activity tent, climb on the
bouncer and enjoy the talents of magician Ryan.
Saturday evening promises to be a night you don’t want to miss. Plan on wearing
your best Caribbean outfit and kick off the evening with the reggae sounds of Rockalypso. It then switches to Celtic and back by popular demand is Dust Rhinos, where
Blair and the band will get your toes tapping. For all you Parrothead Jimmy Buffet
fans, Northern Harbour from Ontario will delight you with the tunes of Jimmy Buffet.
The evening closes with the popular band from British Columbia 54-40 who have been
producing music for 30 years. Some of their songs include Miss You and Ocean Pearl.
Hope to see you there.

DEVELOPING YOUR PROPERTY? HAVE IT SURVEYED FIRST.
New fences must be on or within your property lines. New buildings must meet
local zoning requirements regarding distances from property lines. Additions require
accurate location of existing buildings prior to design or construction. A survey
prepared by a Manitoba Land Surveyor will determine the physical extent of the title
to your property and offers peace of mind in knowing that your improvements are
located within your title limits.
Incorrect assumptions can be costly! Fences or tree lines may not be on or within
your property lines. Iron pins may have been disturbed, unlawfully moved or may
not represent your property corner at all. Call us for a free consultation.
Good fences make good neighbors!

Fire & Rescue in Grand Marais
W
hite sands, a soft north breeze from Lake Winnipeg, hot dogs on the boardwalk, a jog along the country lanes, a campfire at night or a glorious stroll
under the stars - this is the scent and feel of Grand Beach in the summer. It is
also a serendipitous reality for the residents of Grand Marais and area who perpetuate, protect and care for this idyllic lifestyle all year round.
The village of Grand Marais perches comfortably at the most northern edge of
the R.M. of St. Clements. It shares its rich bounty with thirty-eight other small
and not-so-small cottage clusters that exist from Beaconia to Albert Beach in the
R.M. of Alexander. Within these mini communities are about 2200 permanent
residences belonging to comfortably retired seniors, enterprising business owners and active young families who call this little slice of paradise ‘home’. From
Spring to Fall the balance of seasonal cottages and campground spots are filled
to capacity, sometimes overflowing with happy vacationers eager to share the
sun, fun and activities of lake life.
Supporting the hopes, the dreams and this manner of living are four enthusiastic community groups. The Grand Beach & Area Development Corporation, the
Grand Marais & Area Seniors, the East Beaches Wellness & Recreation Coalition
and the Grand Marais Recreation Association. These organizations have joined
forces and are working diligently to create a three-phase structure that will house
a Heritage centre, a Welcome centre, a Wellness facility, a Seniors centre, plus a
large Banquet Hall, a Curling Rink and Skating venue.
Phase I of the East Beaches Community Complex is already in place. Visitors
to the area will receive a welcome from “Travel Manitoba” while they experience
the history of the area at the Community Central building located a half kilometre from the main gate at Grand Beach Park. The Heritage wing is in its fledgling stage and local history buffs are collecting artefacts and data to create an
interactive experience that moves the visitor from the time that LaVerandry first
acknowledged this area up to its present day status. Phase II & III are blossoming on the horizon. Meanwhile, join us for a promising summer at this prairie
oasis. You ARE welcome!

HOW ABOUT ENJOYING SAILING ON LAKE
WINNIPEG At VICTORIA BEACH YACHT CLUB
V
ictoria Beach Yacht Club hosts one of Manitoba’s largest catamaran sailing
fleets, many other dinghies and sailboards and a small number of keelboats.
Located on the east side of Lake Winnipeg, in the municipality of Victoria Beach,
the Victoria Beach Yacht Club offers both recreation and racing fun. The Yacht Club
was established in 1964 with the moving of a caboose across the bay in the winter and locating it where the Yacht Club stands today. The new building was built
in 1987 as the old caboose had outgrown it’s usefulness due to size and wood
deterioration. The new clubhouse features a central class room and a kitchen with
cooking facilities, a fridge and barbecue. There are individual lockers and a boat
storage compound, plus dinghy and catamaran launching off the beach. Races are
held every Saturday and Sunday throughout July and August with deck barbecues
held after every race day.
The Sailing Club is hosting 3 Windsurfing Clinics this summer. If you wish to
learn board sailing, how about joining
the fun on the beach. The dates are
August 13/14, August 20/21 and August
27/28. For registration and information
please call the Manitoba Sailing Association at 925-5648.
The Victoria Beach Yacht Club also
proudly offers 1 week sailing lessons for
7 year olds and up starting at the beginning of July through to mid August.
The first lessons begin on Monday July
4th. All instructors are fully certified by
the Canadian Yachting Association and
instruct a CYA developed course. Children
are taught in Optimist sailboats, small
boats that are perfect for learning sailEnthusiastic young sailors take Optimist
ing basics. Teens and adults learn in two sailing lessons at VBYC.
person Laser II boats, all provided by the
Victoria Beach Yacht Club. Lessons are held in the bay in front of the yacht club.
Lessons are offered in the mornings or afternoons to fit into your family schedule.
For sailing school information and registration please call Jona at 322-5227 before
July 1st and after July 1st call Evelyn at 756-6525 or Jona at 756-8292. Sailing
lessons registration also takes place on Sunday July 3rd at the Community Club

Victoria Beach SnowDrifters
T
he Victoria Beach Snowdrifters snowmobile club has been in existence since
snowmobiling became a winter activity with the club being founded in 1962.
The club’s base grooming area is from Belair area and north to Victoria Beach,
east towards Pine Falls, south to Stead and west to the lake. Trails are also
staked and groomed on Lake Winnipeg from Belair to Victoria Beach to #504
continuing around to Albert Beach. Trails are also groomed along roadway ditches
such as #59 highway from Traverse Bay Corner to #504 and the lake, entire
length along Lakeshore Drive on the east side, Highway # 11 east of Traverse Bay
Corner Store and along the railway bed from Hillside Road to Belair Road. We also
groom a trail to Hecla Island, depending on ice conditions each winter season.
The club’s objectives are to enhance the enjoyment of snowmobiling in the area
through fellowship, family outings and special events. The Snowdrifters are under
the umbrella of Snoman, who coordinates all snowmobile trail activities throughout the province.
first trail checkpoint and the Birchwood Motor Hotel hosted the final check point
and put on a fabulous buffet at the end of the day.
March brought the Children’s Carnival scheduled at the VB Sports Club. Some of
the events for the children include three legged races, fish toss, egg and spoon
races, boot toss and an obstacle course. Everyone enjoyed hotdogs and hamburgers cooked on the barbecue and hot and cold drinks to keep you refreshed on
a sunny crisp day.
What’s’ up for next season?
Mug, Spud & Steak nite at the Birchwood Hotel - Saturday September 24, 2011
Club Rides -various weekends, to be determined according to trail conditions
Poker Derby – in Belair Forest, Elk Island, Pine Falls, Grand Marais, start Hillside Power Products, finish at Birchwood Motor Hotel - February 18, 2012
Kid’s Carnival – VB Sports Club – March 10, 2012
Riding through the Wilderness on Beautifully Groomed Trails – Always!!!
The Victoria Beach Snowdrifters Club’s website, www.vbsnowdrifters.ca, has up
to date information on all events, an abundance of photos and a host of other
informational links. We would like to encourage local snowmobile enthusiasts to
join the club through the website.
We look forward to seeing you out in cottage country in the summer time and
also once the snow flies!
Chris Aldridge
Last season’s activities began, no snow as yet, but fundraiser time, on Saturday, September 25th with a Mug, Spud and Steak nite at the Birchwood Hotel. We
had close to 150 guests, who had a great time, great food and a large selection
of prizes from the silent auction. Sold out for our 1st annual nite, many more
annual Mug, Spud Steak nites are to come as a fundraising event. All fundraising
activities are to raise $ to finance a new groomer shelter on land we have leased
at the corner of #59 AND #11 highways.
This past February, the Snowdrifters hosted a Poker Derby that toured snowmobilers through the local area including Belair Forest, Elk Island, Pine Falls
(Chicken Chef), and Grand Marais (SandBar). Hillside Power Products hosted the
