Papal Pilgrimage Carroll’s Inaugural St. Pat’s Fest mind | body | spirit “The world tells us to seek success, power and money; God tells us to seek humility, service and love.” - Pope Francis Part of our mission at Carroll has always been to educate our students to be more and do more. Through service to their families and others, Matthew Sableski ‘91 our students will become responsible citizens and leaders of tomorrow. We want our students to see themselves as part of the global community, a community that needs their gifts and talents, and that they carry with them into the world a higher sense of purpose and the potential for doing good. The willingness to work for the benefit of those in need without compensation or recognition of any kind is a quality that can be seen in nearly every member of our community. It is found in students accumulating thousands of hours of service at activities such as Action Appalachia, Christian Service Work Camp, Tops Soccer, Shanty Town, PATS Camp or tutoring at Ruskin Elementary and St. Anthony School. It is found in our parents and alumni who understand the importance of stewardship and know that in order for us to achieve our goals, we all have to use the gifts God has given us for the good of this community. It is found in our teachers who consistently go above and beyond the call of duty to ensure that our students are safe, confident and prepared for the future. These activities are vitally important, but I am most impressed with how I see service embedded in the daily activities of the people in our community. Simple actions like holding the door for someone in the hall, helping pick up someone’s books if they drop them, saying “hello” to visitors, looking out for others that are sick and down, and saying “thank you” to those that help us through each day are ways in which we show a respect for the basic human dignity of every person. By doing acts of service, both large and small, our students learn that something beautiful comes with giving back to one’s community. Maybe it is the satisfaction of helping those who are less fortunate. Maybe it is seeing people from all different walks of life smile with that same smile of gratitude, or perhaps it is gaining a sensitivity to others that is only gained through community service. At Carroll we believe that service has the power to transform us all into more open-minded and compassionate people with a willingness to sacrifice for others - just as our Savior did for us! It’s a great day to be a Patriot! In His service, Matthew Sableski ‘91 Principal www.carrollhs.org | 937.253.8188 02 PAPAL PILGRIMAGE to Philadelphia Before the sun rose on the last Friday in September, 32 Carroll High School students and 15 other members of the Carroll community left Dayton on a charter bus and made a trip that some called an experience of a lifetime. Those 45 people traveled more than 500 miles to Philadelphia to partake in a weekend celebrating the Catholic faith with Pope Francis during his first visit to the United States. Carroll was the only Dayton area high school to sponsor such a trip to Philadelphia for the Holy Father’s Apostolic Journey to the United States. The Papal Pilgrimage to Washington D.C., New York and Philadelphia was part of the Festival of Families which culminated in a Papal Mass Sunday. All 32 Carroll students attended Pope Francis’s speech at Independence Hall Saturday. Carroll senior Lindsey Harper was one of the students who made the trip. “I grew closer to a lot of people on the trip. Being around so many people in Philadelphia who are there for the same reason, no matter how different we might be, is what I remember most about the trip.” With demand for hotels in Philadelphia at historic levels, 03 the Carroll group camped in New Jersey with other student groups who chose to sleep in cabins rather than miss Pope Francis’ visit. “I was in awe. It was so cool to be able to see the leader of the Catholic church up close.” Saturday’s trip to Independence Hall to take in Pope Francis’ speech at the Festival of Families brought the group closer to the Pope than they ever imagined. Harper estimates they stood about 30 feet away from him during the procession to Independence Hall. “I was in awe. It was so cool to be able to see the leader of the Catholic church up close.” “His message is especially powerful for young people,” Campus Minister and Service Coordinator Melissa Fisher, ‘83, said. “We are excited to reinforce the Holy Father’s message at Carroll High School and in the Dayton community.” The group stayed in Philadelphia Sunday while Pope Francis led Mass before heading back to Carroll. Harper says Pope Francis isn’t the only one who made a lasting impression. mind | body | spirit “We were in line for Mass Sunday, and we saw a group of people drumming and singing. I joined in, and so did the rest of the Carroll group. It really showed me how easy it can be to praise God even in moments when you feel bothered or upset by something.” ACTION APPALACHIA The tradition continues... It’s one of Carroll’s proudest traditions, but it starts from the ground up each year. Its members are all from the senior class, but none of the students have been involved in the project in years past. People from all over Dayton contribute to its success though its impact is felt hundreds of miles away from Carroll. Action Appalachia is the biggest service project Carroll students perform. Each fall, students involved with the project collect nearly 14,000 pounds of donated toys, clothes, household items and food (enough to fill a large box truck) for the residents of Campton, Ky. fall of 2005 when her son Dan, ‘06, was helping collect and pack donations to the project. She took over as the project advisor in 2009 when Carol Lacombe retired. “I saw the good that it did and the needs that it met. It has always been part of the senior class [since 1996], and I wanted the tradition to continue. What we take is what they use and live off of. Every year, we fill that truck, and I don’t know how we do it.” Seniors began gathering donations in October. Each day after school, they spent hours moving the items by the cartload from the loading dock to a large storage room where they sorted and boxed the items. As the donation deadline State Route 9000 leads into Campton, but a collection of approached, neatly stacked boxes began to line a 100 foot dirt trails, busted roads and gravel paths lead out of the long hallway. The Class of 2016 thanks everyone who helped make the project successful again. The Class of 2017 is looking forward to your continued support of this service project! MEET LT. NICK MEMERING Class of 2005 Lt. Nick Memering, ‘05, still starts his days the same way he did at Carroll. He springs out of bed at 6 a.m., eats a quick breakfast and hops in the car for a long commute to where his day really begins. But one aspect has changed. Instead of sitting in a classroom as a high school student, he’s standing in front of a whiteboard preparing military students for a day of learning how to fly helicopters. “I’ve had to be a student in my career, and Carroll prepared me for that. I’m 28 years old and still carry flash cards, and that’s something I picked up in Word Clues class. Carroll sets you up with more than knowledge; it teaches you how to learn and to use skills dynamically. When you’re operating a helicopter with so many moving parts, just knowing the steps to get you out of emergency situations doesn’t help unless you can understand ‘why’ as well, and that might save your life.” The Navy and other branches of the military are looking for more than good grades in their future officers, Memering noted. He credits Carroll’s broad offering of activities outside of the classroom as a key aspect of his time at Carroll that made him an ideal recruit. The dream of being a pilot was something Memering carried in his heart and his mind growing up in Xenia and attending St. Brigid Elementary School, but the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, just weeks into his freshman year at Carroll, guided Memering to a career serving his country. A Pensecola, Fla. resident, Lt. Memering serves as an instructor at Naval Station Whiting Field in nearby Milton, Fla. After briefing his students in the classroom, Lt. Memering oversees two or three flights each day piloted by two or three students. Each flight can last up to three hours. Memering’s students who complete their training at Whiting Field earn Wings of Gold, identifying them as naval aviators. They go on to pilot aircraft for the United States Marine Corps, Navy, and Coast Guard. International students from allied countries go back to Saudi Arabia, Italy, Spain, Singapore, the Netherlands, and other nations to serve their home countries. Even though he’s now the teacher, Memering says he still uses study habits he developed at Carroll. 07 “I remember exactly where I was on September 11. I was sitting in Mrs. Levy’s Honors Biology class with the TVs on and watched the towers fall. That’s what cemented my desire to serve. Everyone does it in their own way, and I’ve been fortunate to combine something I love doing with something I’m passionate a b o u t : p r o t e c t i n g t h e United States. I want my children to be able to go to a school like Carroll and have that school give them all the opportunities that I had.” mind | body | spirit “The academies are looking for well-rounded people. They want to see you in sports; they want to see you in clubs. I was part of Key Club and wrestling. Carroll gave me an opportunity not only to stay in shape physically, but also mentally prepare for long deployments.” HSC 28, performed search and rescue and supply transport operations. A later deployment on USS Mount Whitney included missions in Sweden, Germany, Belgium, and France where the squadron added Very Important Personnel transport to its previous duties. “I applied for ROTC, the service academies, and the coast guard academy. I was accepted by a few places I applied,” Memering said. “Carroll gave me every opportunity to do it many different ways, and I was able to choose my path.” Memering’s journey from Carroll has taken him around the world to serve his country, but he encourages others to use their talents to serve in different ways. “You don’t have to join the military to serve. You can be a cop, teacher, a nurse. Even being a good citizen is serving. That path from Linden Avenue led to West Lafayette, If you’re doing everything correctly as a good citizen, you’re Ind. and the ROTC program at Purdue University where doing your part. We’re all called to do different things.” Memering earned a degree in Industrial Technology. He became an Ensign in the Lieutenant Memering Navy and earned a promotion recently became engaged “You don’t have to join the military to to Lieutenant Junior to his girlfriend, Ashley Grade before attaining his serve. You can be a cop, teacher, a nurse. Days. His sister Amanda, current rank. Even being a good citizen is serving. ACADEMICS » Tower Challenge Mr. Lakin’s Advanced Drafting class participated in the annual Tower Challenge. Each of the four teams were given a 6” x 6” styrofoam block, a box of fettucine, a roll of tape and their imaginations to create the tallest, freestanding tower. After 30 minutes, the first place team consisted of Chase Fedkow, Sam Janson, and Zack Westgerdes with a tower height of 55 inches. Coming in second was the team of Paul Miller III, Nick Keating, Sam Fortner, and Zachary Carnevale with a tower height of 42 inches. Each team claimed chocolate as their prize! » A Lesson Plan for Disaster Carroll’s Dr. Christina O’ Malley published a lesson plan on the National Earth Science Teacher’s Association (NESTA) website that showed how principles of STEM education played a vital role in relieving one of Dayton’s greatest natural disasters. Great Dayton Flood Inquiry Unit: Celebrating the Centennial of a Defining Flood in American History appeared in the fall 2015 issue of the NESTA journal The Earth Scientist. According to the publication, the lesson plan “uses experiential and place-based learning to educate high school earth A watershed map of the science students about the scientific phenomena View from Woodland Hills, looking north to downtown Dayton. Source: The Miami Conservancy District, Dayton, Ohio. Great Miami River. of flooding through a multi-subject, integrated Source: The Miami Conservancy District, Dayton, Ohio. unit. Students use historical records and maps to calculate the rate and volume of flooding and are able to use this knowledge critically to evaluate flood mitigation systems in other locations.” Dr. O’ Malley designed the course materials to extend beyond STEM education. “There are a lot of crosscurricular components to it, depending on how teachers choose to use it. Science teachers can talk about geological hazards and floods, you can talk about geography if you want to bring in social studies and history, and economics was a big part of what was happening. It’s a very rich lesson plan. When you work with students you want to make sure that you’re giving them the best quality and the best content that you can. A lot of what I do is working together with other teachers to make sure what I’m doing will help the students learn the best and do it in a way that’s interesting. Making something that is interdisciplinary is going to help students who might not like the science part of it.” The historical aspects of the lesson plan feature two of the most prestigious Daytonians who answered the call to serve their fellow citizens in the city’s time of greatest need. “The people in Dayton who are famous businessmen from that era like John Patterson and Charles Kettering pulled stuff together to help people during the flood. They started making canoes at NCR. They were trying to figure out how to get people out of flooded areas, so they stopped making cash registers and started making boats with whatever wood they could find on hand.” Y o u c a n r e a d t h e e n t i r e l e s s o n p l a n a t https://www.nestanet.org/cms/sites/default/files/journal/Malley_TES_Fall15_sep.pdf 09 mind | body | spirit » Economic Leadership: A Patriot’s Week at Yale Through a generous grant from the Raiff Family Foundation, Stamatina Tolias (‘16) was able to spend a week at Yale in July learning how to lead change through economic policy. “[The program] taught us about how poverty and corruption play a huge role in the economics world. It’s not only about money.” “[The program] taught us about how poverty and corruption play a huge role in the economics world. It’s not only about money.” Stamatina spent the first part of each day in Yale classrooms learning different principles of economics. In the afternoon, she and the other students went through leadership training and had free time to explore the Ivy League campus and city of New Haven, Conn. She sees herself as a neurosurgeon after finishing college, but Stamatina says the lessons she learned at Yale can apply to almost any career path. “Many people whose goal it is to be in the medical field focus a lot on the medical field and that’s it. If you want to be a leader and progress and make a step forward in any of those fields, you have to be thinking of the global impact, and economics is a big part of that.” Stamatina wrote a thank you letter to the Raiff Family Foundation for financing the entire experience. One day, she hopes to sponsor a similar experience for students. “That’s what I want to live out in my life. If I ever reach a point where I can provide another person a service or education like that, that’d be awesome. If I didn’t have this opportunity, I never would have gone to Yale.” After an anonymous application process here at Carroll, a committee of teachers chose Tina to apply directly to the program. The Foundation for Teaching Economics organized the Economics for Leaders (EFL) program which “gives promising students the skills to be more effective leaders and to teach them how to employ economic analysis when considering difficult public policy choices,” according to the program’s website. Carroll High School continues to work closely with the Raiff Family Foundation, looking for similar experiences to enrich the education of our students. » The Perfect Score: Rachel Ollier (‘16) scored a perfect composite score on the ACT Exam. Rachel took the test in June and September. In September, Rachel earned a perfect composite score of 36. Rachel says taking the test more than once helped her reach a perfect score the most. “It helps with timing. Timing is one of the hardest aspects of the test, and people find themselves rushing to finish everything in time.” Studying for the test’s format was another key for Rachel. “I studied from a book the first time. It breaks down the format of the test. I also read as much as possible. The reading section takes up a lot of time, and reading as much as possible helped me to have more time to spend answering questions.” “It’s an accomplishment, but I don’t feel like it makes me smarter than my other classmates. There are other students in my classes who will take the test and not earn a perfect score, but they’re just as smart as I am.” Rachel is still weighing her college choices but plans to study medicine. www.carrollhs.org | 937.253.8188 10 SERVICE » National Unity Day For one day, the color orange was as plentiful as Red, White, and Blue at Carroll High School. On October 21 as part of National Unity Day 2015, Carroll participated in several activities to unite for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion in an act of solidarity against bullying. Orange is the designated color for National Unity Day, the culmination of National Bullying Prevention Month in October. Students and faculty wore orange, the school celebrated a unity-themed Mass, and campus ministry placed statements of affirmation written on orange paper on lockers. Students signed an orange banner during lunch hour as a pledge to stop bullying. A Donor presented the school with orange mums, displayed during Mass as a reminder to stand vigilantly against bullying. Carroll High School partnered with Party Pleasers to light the front of the building orange at night. Party Pleasers also lit their offices orange at 4140 Linden Avenue to participate in Unity Day. » El Salvador Encounter This past summer, 12 Carroll students traveled with Mr. Jim Murray, Mr. Jeremy Kohler, and Miss Tara Knopp for a reverse mission encounter to El Salvador where they had the opportunity to spend time with citizens in the poorest part of the country as part of the CRISPAZ (Christians for Peace in El Salvador) program. The group visited the Hospital Divina Providencia and its terminally ill patients. A unique ministry program, the El Salvador Encounter aims to foster reflection on the meaning of working for justice rather than working solely through traditional charitable programs. “Instead of going and painting a wall or helping in a orphanage for a day, we learn about how we can do things effectively in the United States when we come home,” Miss Knopp said. “We do missions every day here in [Dayton], but this is going and learning about how you can do things differently in the United States and help small businesses in El Salvador.” Senior Gavin Tom says this immersive service mission changed his outlook on life. “Before the trip, I was a really selfish person. Now, I really appreciate the things I have and advocate for some of the social changes that are necessary. “Think about all the things we have here, how wealthy we are as a culture, and how selfish we are. Then, we go into a different place where they are so much poorer and give so much even though we don’t really deserve it.” The Campus Ministry Department has another El Salvador Encounter planned for the summer of 2017. 11 mind | body | spirit ARTS » The Marching Patriots present: “The Space Between” The Marching Patriots wrapped up another award winning season with a performance at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. This year’s show, “The Space Between,” featured original music composed by Carroll High School Music Department Chair Carl Soucek and original drill written by Assistant Director Ryan Griffin, ‘97. The band and guard swept every first place award at Mid States Band Association Class AA competitions at Bellbrook, Lebanon and Centerville. The ensemble also placed second overall at MSBA Class AA Championships and were the highest rated group from the state of Ohio. The color guard was recognized with the Best Color Guard Award. The Music Department’s winter and spring groups have begun scheduling their competition seasons: The Winter Guard plans to attend two Winter Guard International Regional Championships and World Championships at the University of Dayton Arena from April 7-9. The jazz band and jazz combo will perform at the Beavercreek Weekend of Jazz from March 4-5. » “Headin’ for the Hills” The Freedom Players had some good ol’ fashioned family fun with this year’s fall play, “Headin’ for the Hills.” Cornelia Wellington Heister (played by Emily Klepacz) and her sister, Dorthea (Maria Schlegel), are wealthy orphans whose only living relatives are a hillbilly family who run a general store in Lone Mule, Tennessee. Marissa Thayer was the student director, and Hannah Barnes, Sarah Connair, and Edward Wolff were the Stage Directors. Aurielle Barber and Emma Wright were the Costume Managers. The cast and crew consisted of over 40 Carroll students in grades 9 through 12. On March 18-20, The Freedom Players will present the spring musical, “The Addams Family.” » Singin’ in the Holidays Junior Thomas McVicar helped the Riverside Area Chamber of Commerce kick off the Christmas season at their Hometown Holiday celebration. McVicar, a selftaught singer and guitar player, performed holiday favorites and a few original pieces as part of the event’s Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony. You can catch his performances at the Lebanon Opry House and other community events in the Dayton area. Thomas has even had a call-back audition for the TV show “The Voice,” just missing out on an invitation to perform in Los Angeles. Thomas’ most recent accomplishment was the winner of Carroll’s Call for Talent. www.carrollhs.org | 937.253.8188 12 PATRIOT ATHLETIC HONORS Football Cory Hastings (RB) GCL North Offensive Player of the Year, 1st Team All GCL Co-ed, 2nd Team All Southwest Ohio (Running Back), GCL Co-ed rushing leader (1,267) Jason Pierce (OLB) 1st Team All GCL Co-ed, Honorable Mention - Southwest Ohio, Channel 7 WHIO-TV Athlete of the Week Alex Story (K) D.J.
