Hospital public forum to address building questions
Community members have questions about
Grady Memorial’s planned surgery center,
and they deserve answers, hospital supporters agree. The hospital has planned a public
forum, open to all interested parties, at 6:30
p.m. on Jan. 28 in the Davis Hall Amphitheater at USAO.
Grady County voters will decide on Feb. 9
whether to pay one quarter of a penny sales
tax to fund a new building for Grady Memorial Hospital, the county’s largest employer,
caused by an operating room shutdown by
federal regulators last fall.
“Since this hospital has operated for 57
years without any local tax support, there are
plenty of curious people who wonder what the project is all about and what will
be accomplished over the next 20 years if the sales tax is approved by local voters,” said GMH Administrator Kean Spellman. “The entire tax will be earmarked for facility construction, building renovation,
and capital equipment such as air conditioners, operating room tables and lights,
etc. There is a portion, 11.5% which will fund
Emergency Ambulance services in the county
as well.”
Spellman and local leaders are answering a
lot of questions in social media, but a face-toface discussion is better, Spellman said.
“Whether or not the hospital itself is threatened with closure if the new surgery center
isn’t built, how the decision will affect the
local economy, and whether the hospital could
be sold – these are questions people want
answered. And there are solid answers available.”
Earlier this month, Spellman released a sortof ‘State of the Hospital’ report called Healthcare 2020. A copy is available from hospital staff or on the Friends of Grady
Memorial Facebook page, www.facebook.com/friendsofgrady.
The report answers many of the questions that GMH leaders have heard in
recent weeks, but a public discussion will allow concerned community members
to be heard and accurate answers provided.

Local leaders discuss impact of possible hospital closure
• EDITOR’S NOTE: This is the third of a series of articles aimed to educate the citizens of Grady County on the current
issues surrounding Grady Memorial Hospital. Each week will focus on a different aspect of this issue and answer the
most frequently asked questions. Grady County residents will have the opportunity to decide a ¼ of a penny sales tax
proposal on February 9, 2016 to fund new operating rooms at the hospital.
Will the local hospital close without a new surgery
center? That’s the question most people are asking Grady Memorial Hospital Administrator Kean
Spellman, he said Friday. And his answer is awfully
compelling, said community supporters who attended
a public forum Thursday night.
Grady County voters will decide on Feb. 9 whether
to pay a quarter-penny sales tax to rescue Grady
Memorial Hospital from an operating room shutdown
ordered by federal regulators last fall, to fund a new
building on the hospital campus.
Spellman is answering a lot of questions at community clubs and forums. In fact, the hospital has
scheduled its own public forum – inviting all parties
interested – at 6:30 p.m. on January 28 in the Davis
Hall Amphitheater at USAO. “We want people to be
educated on this vital issue.” Spellman said.
“One of the most common questions we’ve been
getting from the public is, if the Feb. 9 sales tax is
defeated, will the hospital close?” Spellman said.
“The answer isn’t easy or clear cut. It’s important for
our citizens to know that before the operating rooms
were closed by CMS (Center for Medicare/Medicaid
Services) in August, Grady Memorial was making
a profit and had brought on several new surgical
based doctors and staff members. The majority of our
profits were being generated from outpatient surgery.
Now that we don’t have surgery, we are losing approximately $300,000 per month. If this continues,
our future in Grady County is uncertain. If you look
at what is happening around the United States with
other rural hospitals you will find that in the past five
years, over 57 American communities have lost their
local hospital due to closure. The Oklahoma Hospital
Association rural hospital committee also lists 12
hospitals that are in serious financial distress.”
If the hospital closes, the risks belong to everyone
in the county, Spellman argues. In his ‘State of the
Hospital’ report called Healthcare 2020, Spellman
says Grady’s employment is an anchor to the local
economy.
“The hospital is the county’s largest employer,”
Spellman said. “Before the operating rooms were
closed GMH employed 458 people. Currently, that
number is 380 full and part-time employees at GMH
and Five Oaks Medical Center. Many former employees have taken jobs elsewhere, but are hoping to
return once we get back into full operation.”
Local economic development leader Christy Elkins
agrees.
“The only way that we can guarantee quality
healthcare in our community is do it ourselves by
passing the ¼ of a penny sales tax,” said Elkins, who
serves as CEO of the Chickasha Economic Development Council. “No one else is going to save us. This
is the only way we can continue the progress we’ve
been making and ensure that we have good healthcare.”
In a 20-minute video filled with local opinions on
the hospital, State Sen. Ron Justice (R-Chickasha),
argues for protecting GMH by building a new surgery
center. That video is scheduled for public viewing at a
Jan. 28 public forum at USAO.
“I think it’s extremely important that we have
the new medical facilities here in Grady County,”
Justice said. “As we look at the economic benefits,
the hospital is very important to bringing new business and industry into our community because very
few companies are going to want to establish in our
area if they know that we don’t have complete health
facilities for their employees.”
Justice describes a decline in the economy if the
hospital eventually closes.
“If we don’t have a hospital, that means that we
don’t have doctors, if we don’t have doctors, then we
don’t have nursing homes. And if we don’t have nursing homes, then we lose other people. So the hospital
is a key element to our whole community.”
A new surgery center would give new life to the local economy, not just the hospital, said GMH Surgeon
Dr. John Presley, who has practiced medicine for 35
years, the last decade in Chickasha.
“People in Grady County should know that if they
don’t pass the tax, the hospital is eventually going to
close. It’s simple. And if it closes, all of the specialists will be gone before it closes. A lot of your other
doctors will leave and local businesses are going to
suffer. A lot of people depend on this, your school
district will shrink. [The situation] will shrink tax
money and property values will go down. It’s like a
set of dominoes and once it starts you can’t stop it.”
A new surgery and radiology center would put the
hospital back into profitability, Presley said.
“If we build this, we can get back to saving lives, it
will bring in new physicians that we need. There will

leads the Sparrow Church Ministry in Chickasha.
“I’ve lived in Chickasha all of my life and my family and I support Grady Memorial Hospital,” Blakes
said. “I do have relatives who work at Grady Memorial. We need the healthcare, we need the job positions, and I believe this is a community of progress.

Funeral service for Edna Mae Lewis Vaught of Chickasha,
OK, was held on Saturday, January 23, 2016 at the Sevier
Funeral Home Chapel.
Edna Mae Lewis Vaught was born September 15, 1943
in Daisy, OK to Edward and Evelyn (Wesley) Sanders. She
passed away on Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at her home
west of Chickasha, OK at the age of 72.
She married Donald Lee Lewis on September 11, 1960
and he preceded her in death on January 3, 2001. She
married Jimmy Lane Vaught on September 15, 2001 and
he preceded her in death on September 3, 2011.
Edna worked for the Chickasha Police Department from
the early 80’s till 2001 when she retired as a secretary in
the clerical records department.
Interment was in the Pioneer Cemetery, west of Chickasha, OK under the direction of Sevier Funeral Home.

held on Friday, January 22, 2016 at the Sevier Funeral
Home Chapel.
LeRoy Harris was born October 30, 1929 in Bray, OK to
Leron and Opal Harris. He passed away on Tuesday, January 19, 2016 in Midwest City, OK at the age of 86.
Mr. Harris married Dora Hawley. He moved to the Chickasha area almost 50 years ago and worked with Morris
Brothers, Premier Trailer Co. and Circle H Trailer Co. He
retired from Carl Built at the age of 63. He was a member
of Calvary Baptist Church.
Interment was in the Fairlawn Cemetery under the

Ealmer Robert Klippel ...
Funeral service for Ealmer Robert Klippel,
age 81 of Chickasha, Oklahoma, was held on
Saturday, January 23, 2016 in the Southern
Oaks Church of Christ. Ron Babbit and Sam
Garner officiated.
Ealmer Robert was born the son of Henry
Klippel and Hada Mason Klippel on February
19, 1934 in Pocasset, Oklahoma. He died on January 20,
2016 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
Ealmer graduated from Tuttle High School then attended Oklahoma A & M for one year. He married Wanada Cruzan on January 12, 1954 in Tuttle.
In 1956, he entered the United States Air Force. After
returning from the Air Force in 1961, he joined the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. Ealmer served for twenty two years
and the last two years he provided security for Lieutenant
Governor Spencer Bernard. While in the patrol, he was
instrumental in the founding of the Oklahoma State Troopers Association and served as the first president.
After leaving the highway patrol, he was elected District
2 County Commissioner for Grady County and served fourteen years.
Ealmer was a member of the Southern Oaks Church of
Christ, Lions Club, and other numerous boards.
Interment was in the Friendship Cemetery, Pocasset,
OK. Services were under the direction of the McRay Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Southern

Funeral services for Jonnie C. Osborne,
72, of Chickasha, was Friday, January 22,
2016 at the Ferguson Funeral Home Chapel
with Ron Blankinship officiating.
Jonnie C. Osborne was born on September 9, 1943 in Carnegie, Oklahoma, the son
of Lawly Osborne and Von Ciel (Harness)
Osborne. He died Tuesday, January 19, 2016
in Oklahoma City.
Jonnie grew up in several towns in Oklahoma and graduated from Fletcher High School. Shortly after graduating,
he joined the United States Army and was stationed in
Badhersfeld, Germany, where he met and married Erika
Arnold. After his military service, they came back to
Fletcher to be close to family.
Jonnie was employed at manufacturing companies
including Sequoyah Carpet Mills, Pet Milk, and Hermetic
Switch. He then worked security with Pinkerton at Delta
Faucet. Later he was self-employed as a landscaper and
handyman until his retirement.
Services and interment in Fairlawn Cemetery were
under the direction of Ferguson Funeral Home.

Graveside service for Louise Harmon of Chickasha was
held on Tuesday January 26, 2016 at Rose Hill Cemetery in
Chickasha.
Louise Harmon was born April 18, 1924 in Chickasha.
She was the daughter of Curtis and Lizzie Bell (Jones)
Smith. She died Friday January 22, 2016 in Chickasha at
the Age of 91 years.
She married William “Bill” Harmon August 20, 1942 in
Chickasha. He preceded her in death
November 13, 2003.
Louise lived in the Chickasha area all of her life. She
and her husband were dairy farmers in the area for many
years.
Louise was a member of Sharon Baptist Church.
She was also preceded in death by her son Rodney Dale
Harmon in 1958, her parents, Four sisters and two brothers.
Survivors include four sons; Stanley Harmon,
David Harmon and his wife Pat, Larry Harmon and his wife
Ramona, Mike Harmon and his wife Robbin., eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery under the direction of Sevier Funeral Home. Online condolences may be

and recognized at the Jan. 19 City Council meeting
where their wives pinned on their husbands’ new

15 students inducted into Chickasha Junior Leadership Class of 2016
Members of the Chickasha Junior Leadership Class of 2016 were recently named.
Chickasha Middle School students included the Junior Leadership Class of 2016 are Jacob Finck,
Alyssa Franco, Kiersten Franklin, Abbi Gibson, Serena Green, Carson Jones, Gema Longoria,
Finnley Mantooth, Brandon Nottingham, Lillie Oberlender, Allyson Reed, Dallas Richmond, Karson
Smith, Gracie Weber and Kristen Zupper.
All of these students met certain academic criteria and were nominated by school staff and members of the community.
They will spend the next five months touring governmental entities, local businesses, and USAO.
The students will be working on volunteer projects and also will be visiting board meetings of various organizations throughout the community.
The Chickasha Chamber of Commerce and Chickasha Public Schools are sponsors of the class.

Fairboard Election

have an opportunity to vote
February 2 on members of
the Grady County Fairboard. These elections are
a little different in that they
are held at limited locations
(not your regular voting
precinct) and with very
abreviated hours.
Balloting is done at the
three county barns. That

only from 5pm to 7 pm on

1200 block of Alabama Ave: Officer made a traffic stop in
the 1200 block of Alabama. Michael Saenez was found to
have hidden digital scales under the back seat. The scales
had a white residue that tested positive for Meth. He was
arrested and once at the jail, found to have meth and
marijuana hidden in his pants.

Oklahoma Mission of Mercy is an annual two-day dental clinic that provides
free dental treatment for up to 2,000 patients in need, thanks to professional and
lay volunteers.
This year’s event will be held February 5-6 at the Cox Convention Center in
Oklahoma City and is a great opportunity for corporate team building.
“Each year, Delta Dental of Oklahoma organizes a huge team of volunteers to

Grady County 4-H member nuts about pecans

What does Oklahoma produce 17 million pounds of annually and can be a squirrel’s
favorite treat? Awesome tasting pecans! Oklahoma is actually the 6th leading pecan producing state in America, only trailing Georgia, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and Louisiana. Native Americans even used pecans as an important staple in their food supply
Pecans are an important commodity for Oklahoma, but is it a good commodity for
your body? The answer is yes as pecans are actually in the top 15 foods known for their
antioxidant activity, according to the USDA. They have 6.9 calories per 1 gram and are
an excellent source of vitamin E. In addition pecans are a rich source of minerals like
manganese, potassium, calcium, iron, manganese, zinc, and selenium. A regular addition
of pecans in your diet can also help increase good cholesterol and lower bad cholesterol.
These are not even all the nutrients in pecans so you could say pecans are a super food.
Pecans are a super healthy and abundant resource so what are some things you can do
with them? First you can eat them raw, then you can use them in many cooking recipes,
but most importantly you can use them in ice cream and candy! Here is how to make
canned pecans and cinnamon sugar pecans.
Canned pecans are super easy to make. Canning pecans is a great way you can store
your already shelled pecans for a long time without taking up freezer space.
To start you need a pint jar, your already shelled pecans, and canning lids. Then you put
your pecans in your jar and put the canning lid on top and screw on the screw lid loosely.
Next you put it in the oven for 1 hour at 300 degrees. After they have baked, screw the lid
on tightly and let your pecans sit until it cools. Now you have canned pecans.
Now maybe you want some pecans but with a sweet taste. Then you can make cinnamon sugar pecans. First, you gather your ingredients of 1 egg white, 1 tsp of cold water,
2 and a half cups of pecans, half a cup of sugar, a fourth of a tsp of salt, and a half a tsp of
cinnamon.
Next you start by combining your egg white and water in a glass bowl and beat it until
about stiff. It is stiff when you can cut a line in the foam and the foam doesn’t reform.
Then you fold in your pecans to the egg. After that you need to mix together the sugar, salt, and cinnamon in a separate bowl.
Next you sprinkle your sugar mixture over the pecan mixture and fold until the pecans are
coated. Then you would spread out your pecans in a buttered baking sheet pan or cake roll
pan.
Last you bake the pecans in a 250 degree oven for hour. After the hour, simply remove
them from the oven. Now your pecans would need to cool, and then they would be ready
to eat.
Plus pecans are easy, fast-growing trees, preferring sandy or loamy soil that is welldrained. Most people prefer paper shell varieties because they produce larger nuts and are
easier to crack. They can grow to over 100 feet tall and have large root systems so plant
them in a sunny location with lots of room. Make the next tree you plant in your yard a
pecan tree. In a few years, you can be giving the gift of home grown pecans.
