Explore our interactive onehen.org website Ethiopian Youth Learn to Support One Another through Savings and Entrepreneurship Before joining the Self Help Group I never realized that people my age could engage in savings. In the past, I just used my spending money for useless thing. But now I have some money saved.” ~ Participant in One Hen’s self help youth group in Nazareth, Ethiopia Thanks to One Hen’s curriculum and mobile app, kids around the world are learning how they can earn and save money to improve their lives and help people in need. Last year, One Hen combined its youth curriculum with a microfinance approach and put this content on a mobile app, making it easy to use in remote setting where classrooms, workbooks, and teachers may not be readily available. We then implemented a pilot project, where 120 Ethiopian youth used the app to form six self help groups. Guided by the app and a local facilitator, the youth then pooled their savings and distributed small loans to support one another in coping with family death and illnesses, celebrating personal achievements, and starting small business ventures. During a site visit to Nazareth, Ethiopia last month, the One Hen team had an opportunity to meet dozens of these pilot group participants and learn from their inspiring stories. In 2015, One Hen will use this input and feedback to support the groups’ sustainability and expand use of the mobile app to 1,000 young people in Tanzania and Ethiopia. Pledge Your Profit: Youth Campaign Teaches Research and Business Skills The Pledge Your Profit campaign challenges youth to spend 30 days raising money to help people in need. In collaboration with Girl Rising’s media campaign, participating kids have started a variety of small business ventures and used One Hen’s online resources to determine their product pricing, target customers, marketing strategies, sales venues, and profit-earning potential. Encourage youth to learn more about research, product testing, and social entrepreneurship by participating in the PYP pilot. Click here to get started!
