YOUR LOCAL EDUCATION ASSOCIATION
Local education associations provide the daily, person-to-person contact
that is vital to the effective representation of UEA members. Local leaders
monitor school board activities and represent the collective groups’ interests
at the district level. They impact decisions such as policy interpretation,
employee rights, contract bargaining and much more.
REPRESENTATION AND
COLLECTIVE BARGAINING
The UEA’s member representation system is the UniServ (Unified Services)
program—a network of regional service centers. The “UniServ Director”
helps you and your local association with contract negotiations and school
and teacher advocacy. You benefit from the Association’s collective bargaining
power and constant, professional involvement at the state and local level.

LIABILITY COVERAGE
The UEA protects its members against lawsuits. If you are ever involved
in litigation, the UEA provides not only expert legal representation, but a
$1 million personal liability policy as well.

the uea’s strategic goals
After the voucher campaign in 2007, many of the leaders and staff of the
UEA recognized the need for the Association to take a pro-active approach
when dealing with critical public education issues. To accomplish this,
the UEA Transformation Team was formed in 2008 and given the task
to develop a set of recommendations to help the Association reach its
four Strategic Goals, which can be found at myUEA.org.
PERSONAL FINANCE COURSES
NEA Member Benefits offers workshops to help new educators understand

UEA and NEA-SPONSORED
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
The UEA helps new educators begin, and experienced educators continue,
their careers successfully. For more information, visit the UEA website at
myUEA.org/NewMember. A few of the programs offered are:
• Pass the Praxis Test–Educators who have passed the tests share inside tips to
assist in reducing test anxiety and achieving a passing score. Classes are free
to UEA members.
• I Can Do It!–This UEA Convention and Education Exposition workshop
on effective classroom management is conducted by veteran teachers who
share best practices in discipline and classroom management techniques.
• NEA Professional Development Resources–A variety of resources to help new
teachers. Visit the NEA website at nea.org and follow the Tools and Ideas
link. Look for Works4Me, Lesson Plans, Classroom Management and more.
• The NEA Academy–Online professional development approved by the NEA
to help members in their classrooms. In addition, members can earn online
masters degrees through Walden University, UMass Online and Western
Governors University (WGU). Members get discounts on tuition, application

THE UEA CONVENTION & education
exposition
UEA members may choose from a variety of professional development workshops
during the annual UEA Convention & Education Exposition. Educators
attending the Convention can earn re-licensure points by attending
presentations, workshops or other professional activities. The Convention
also features some of the profession’s most respected and inspiring speakers
and an exhibit hall showcasing more than 200 booths. The UEA Convention
& Education Exposition is free to all UEA members and their families.
NEW EDUCATORS’ WORKSHOP
As part of its annual Convention, the UEA welcomes students and educators
in their early years of teaching to participate in the “New Educators’
Workshop.” Specific sessions on classroom management, working with
special student populations, and tips and shortcuts for educators are open
to attendees during the all-day workshop.
