No it’s our October brochure and something wicked this way comes… and I mean “wicked” in the way the kids of today use it to mean cool and awesome, as we have a fantastic line up this month. As the first paragraph hinted at, we kick off October with Justin Kurzel’s brash and bloody adaptation of Macbeth starring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard. We keep the Shakespearean theme going with Bill - from the makers of Horrible Histories which examines the ‘lost years’ between starting out in Stratford-upon-Avon and becoming the legendary playwright of London. Alas poor Yorick, our NT Live screening of Benedict Cumberbatch as Hamlet on Thu 15 Oct is nearly sold out, but we have added an encore performance on Sun 22 Nov. Festival participation is strong this month, with us taking part in Luminate, Scotland Loves Anime and DanceLive - which should get some hips shaking! The bar staff are busy shaking something else as they practise their vodka martinis for the arrival of the new James Bond film, SPECTRE, on 26 Oct. Fresh from opening this year’s BFI London Film Festival, Carey Mulligan and Meryl Streep star in Suffragette, which looks at the story of the women behind the early feminist movement. Thankfully times have changed and speaking of time, I notice on my calendar that we are rapidly approaching 21 October 2015. This is a red letter day for film fans, as it is the day that Marty McFly and Doc Brown arrived in the future in Back To The Future Part II - so we are screening the film on that night to celebrate… now where is my hoverboard? Shakespeare’s ‘Scottish Play’ returns to our screens in this highly-anticipated, thrilling and visually striking adaptation from Justin Kurzel (Snowtown), starring Michael Fassbender in the titular role and Marion Cotillard as Lady Macbeth. Ricki and the Flash Showing from Fri 2 Oct Jonathan Demme • USA 2015 • 1h41m • Digital • 12A - Contains moderate bad language, sex references, drug references Cast: Meryl Streep, Kevin Kline, Mamie Gummer, Audra McDonald, Sebastian Stan, Rick Springfield. ‘Ricki’ Rendazzo was once a guitar heroine who dreamt of rock-and-roll stardom - now, she balances her band’s divebar performances with a supermarket job that barely pays the bills. But as she returns home to her long-estranged children and ex-husband, she finds herself face with a chance of healing old wounds and perhaps even starting anew. TANGERINES Zaza Urushadze • Estonia/Georgia 2013 • 1h29m • Digital Estonian, Russian and Georgian with English subtitles • cert tbc Cast: Lembit Ulfsak, Mikheil Meskhi, Giorgi Nakhashidze, Elmo Nüganen, Raivo Trass. Set in 1992, during the growing conflict between Georgia and Abkhazian separatists in the wake of the Soviet Union’s dissolution, this compassionate story focuses on two Estonian immigrant farmers who decide to remain in Georgia long enough to harvest their tangerine crop. When the fighting arrives at their doorsteps, Ivo (played by legendary Estonian actor Lembit Ulfsak) along with friend Margus (Elmo Nüganen), treat two wounded soldiers from opposite sides. During their extended period of convalescence under the administration of Ivo, they are forced not only to confront the reasons that fuel their hatred for each other, but also the conflict which rages around them. A beautifully eloquent statement for peace and the futility of bloodshed over racial and ethnic division. 5 6 Main features 99 HOMES THE DANCE OF REALITY 99 Homes The Dance of Reality Showing from Fri 2 Oct La danza de la realidad Ramin Bahrani • USA 2014 • 1h52m • Digital 15 - Contains strong language, sex references Cast: Andrew Garfield, Michael Shannon, Laura Dern. Wed 7 & Thu 8 Oct When he, his mother and his young son are abruptly evicted from their Florida home during the real estate crash of 2008, single father Dennis Nash (Andrew Garfield) - in a desperate bid to reclaim his house - accepts an offer to work for the broker who kicked him out (Michael Shannon). Becoming increasingly successful (and further entangled) in the ruthless and corrupt real estate business, Nash is faced with subjecting other families to the humiliating ordeal that plunged his life into turmoil. With acclaimed filmmaker Ramin Bahrani at the helm and compelling performances from his lead actors, 99 Homes is an intense and urgent drama that holds the greedy few to account for the damage they inflict on the many. Alejandro Jodorowsky • Chile/France 2013 • 2h13m • Digital Spanish with English subtitles • 18 - Contains strong torture Cast: Brontis Jodorowsky, Pamela Flores, Jeremias Herskovits, Alejandro Jodorowsky, Bastián Bodenhöfer, Andres Cox, Adan Jodorowsky, Cristobal Jodorowsky. Produced and directed by legendary filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky (The Holy Mountain, El Topo, Santa Sangre), The Dance of Reality marks his return to filmmaking after a break of 23 years. Born in Tocopilla, a coastal town on the edge of the Chilean desert, Jodorowsky now returns there to recount his unhappy and alienated childhood as part of an uprooted immigrant family. Blending history with metaphor, mythology and poetry, this intensely personal film reflects Jodorowsky’s philosophy that reality is a dance created by our own imaginations. Wes Orshoski • USA 2015 • 1h50m • Digital • cert tbc Documentary From director Wes Orshoski (Lemmy) comes the story of the long-ignored pioneers of punk: The Damned, the first UK punks on wax and the first to cross the Atlantic. Sicario Showing from Fri 9 Oct Denis Villeneuve• USA 2015 • 2h1m • Digital • English and Spanish with English subtitles •15 - Contains strong violence, images of dead bodies, strong language Cast: Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin, Benicio Del Toro, Jon Bernthal. At the border between the United States and Mexico, idealistic and determined FBI agent Kate Macy (Emily Blunt) is enlisted as part of a joint government task force charged with taking on the cartels that operate between the nations. As her team work drug bosses against one another, she quickly finds herself at odds with the ethically dubious tactics at play. With cinematography from the great Roger Deakins, Denis Villeneuve (Enemy, Prisoners) helms this dark, suspenseful and surprising thriller, further endorsing his credentials as a skilled and versatile director. Showing from Fri 9 Oct Much speculation has been made about William Shakespeare’s ‘lost years’ - the period between his obscure beginnings in Stratford-upon-Avon and eventual acclaim as a London playwright. In Bill, performers from BBC’s Horrible Histories provide some of their own ideas... With multi-role performances from the six leads and enjoyable cameos, we follow “hopeless young lute player” Bill Shakespeare as he leaves home to follow his dreams. Suffragette Showing from Mon 12 Oct Sarah Gavron • UK 2015 • 1h46m • Digital 12A - Contains infrequent strong language, moderate violence, a scene of force-feeding Cast: Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne-Marie Duff, Meryl Streep, Ben Whishaw, Brendan Gleeson Selected as the opening film of the 2015 BFI London Film Festival, Sarah Gavron’s drama tracks the story of the foot soldiers of the early feminist movement - women who were forced underground to pursue a dangerous game of cat and mouse with an increasingly brutal State. These working women, who had seen peaceful protest achieve nothing, turn to violence as the only route to change and were willing to lose everything in their fight for equality - jobs, homes, children and their lives. Maud (Carey Mulligan) was one such foot soldier. The story of her fight for dignity is as gripping and visceral as any thriller, it is also heart-breaking and inspirational. 7 8 Main features CITIZENFOUR THE PROGRAM SPECTRE Citizenfour The Program Wed 14 Oct at 8.40pm Showing from Fri 23 Oct Laura Poitras • Germany/USA 2014 • 1h53m • Digital • English, Portuguese and German with English subtitles 15 - Contains strong language • Documentary Stephen Frears • UK/France 2015 • 1h44m • Digital • cert tbc Cast: Ben Foster, Chris O’Dowd, Dustin Hoffman, Guillaume Canet. In January 2013, filmmaker Laura Poitras was in the process of constructing a film about abuses of national security in post-9/11 America when she started receiving encrypted e-mails from someone identifying himself as ‘citizen four’, saying he wanted to blow the whistle on the massive covert surveillance programs run by the NSA and other intelligence agencies. In June 2013, she and reporter Glenn Greenwald flew to Hong Kong for the first of many meetings with the man who turned out to be Edward Snowden. She took her camera with her. The film that resulted from this series of tense encounters is absolutely unique in the history of cinema: a 100% real-life thriller unfolding minute by minute before our eyes. Screening in association with Sound - Scotland’s Festival of New Music - 22 Oct - 9 Nov 2015 - sound-scotland.co.uk Mia Madre Mon 19 to Thu 22 Oct Nanni Moretti • Italy/France 2015 • 1h47m • Digital • Italian and English with English subtitles • 15 - Contains strong language Cast: Margherita Buy, John Turturro, Nanni Moretti, Giulia Lazzarini. In this smart, sensitive drama, Margherita (Margherita Buy) is a middle-aged director shooting a film with a difficult American star (played by John Turturro). Throughout this testing time, she wrestles with her mother’s terminal illness and her daughter’s volatile adolescence. Nanni Moretti’s understated and affecting film - a Palme d’Or nominee at Cannes - explores existential confusion and loss, while weaving moments of wry humour into the drama. As American cyclist Lance Armstrong (Ben Foster) rises to prominence as a world champion, heroically battling cancer along the way, one Irish journalist is the lone dissenting voice against his accolades. Initially enamoured by Armstrong’s charisma and dedication, sports writer David Walsh (Chris O’Dowd) begins to suspect that the seven-time Tour de France winner’s successes have been built on a lie. Based on Walsh’s book Seven Deadly Sins: My Pursuit of Lance Armstrong, Stephen Frears (Philomena) directs this tale of deception, intrigue and eventual vindication. SPECTRE Showing from Mon 26 Oct Sam Mendes • USA/UK 2015 • time tbc• Digital • cert tbc Cast: Daniel Craig, Monica Bellucci, Léa Seydoux, Christoph Waltz, Ralph Fiennes. Terry Gilliam & Terry Jones • UK 1975 • 1h31m • Digital • English, French and Latin with English subtitles 15 - Contains moderate sex references, comic violence Cast: Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Eric Idle, Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones, Michael Palin. Make More Noise! Suffragettes in Silent Film Showing from Fri 30 Oct UK 1899-1917 • 1h20m • Digital • Silent with recorded score written by Lillian Henley • cert tbc Complementing the release of Sarah Gavron’s Suffragette (see page 7), this selection of silent films from the BFI National Archive shows how suffragettes were portrayed on the cinema screen while their battles were still been waged on the streets outside. The suffragettes tactic was to stand up at every public event and cry “Votes for women!” As leader Emmeline Pankhurst said in her legendary speech of November 1913: “You have to make more noise than anybody else, you have to make yourself more obtrusive than anybody else, you have to fill all the papers more than anybody else. In fact you have to be there all the time and see that they do not snow you under.” SING-ALONG Wed 14 Oct at 8.30pm England 932 A.D. and King Arthur - accompanied by his trusty servant, Patsy - is seeking knights to join his Round Table at Camelot. Having recruited a band of wise, brave, pure and not-quiteso-brave lords, Arthur and his entourage avoid the silliness of Camelot and encounter God in a wondrous vision. He sets the band of heroes on a noble quest: to find the Holy Grail. It’s a visceral experience - we aren’t seeing the movie, we’re having it happen to us. It’s frightening! We see movies for a lot of reasons. Sometimes we want to be amused. Sometimes we want to escape. Sometimes we want to laugh, or cry, or see sunsets. And sometimes we want to be scared. I’d like to be clear about this - if you want to have a really terrifying experience, see Halloween.” - Roger Ebert Screening in association with Dead by Dawn Scotland’s International Horror Film Festival www.deadbydawn.co.uk Wings of Desire/Over the Rainbow WINGS OF DESIRE SPECIALEVENT Wings of Desire Der Himmel über Berlin Sun 1 Nov at 5.30pm Wim Wenders • West Germany/France 1987 • 2h8m • Digital German, English, French and Turkish with English subtitles 15 - Contains one use of strong language Cast: Bruno Ganz, Solveig Dommartin, Otto Sander, Peter Falk, Curt Bois. CODEPENDENT LESBIAN SPACE ALIEN SEEKS SAME Over the Rainbow Belmont Filmhouse is delighted to host Over the Rainbow - a monthly screening strand for new and classic LGBTQIA films and events. This month, we have Madeleine Olnek’s perfectly pitched parody of ‘50s sci-fi - the marvellously titled...*drum roll*... Part romance, part comedy, part meditation on matters political and philosophical, Wenders’ remarkable movie posits a world haunted by invisible angels listening in to our thoughts. Such plot as there is concerns two kindly spirits (Ganz and Sander), posted to contemporary Berlin, who encounter a myriad of mortals, including an ageing writer blighted by memories of a devastated Germany; an actor (Peter Falk, sublimely playing himself) on location shooting a film about the Nazi era; and a lonely trapeze artist, with whom Ganz falls in love, thus prompting his desire to become mortal at last. Full of astonishingly hypnotic images (courtesy of veteran cinematographer Henri Alekan, also responsible for Cocteau’s luminous La Belle et la bête) that manage effortlessly to turn Wenders’ and Peter Handke’s poetic, literary script into pure cinematic expression. Few films are so rich, so intriguing, or so ambitious. Romance develops between Jane, a shy greeting card store employee, and Zoinx, the woman Jane does not realise is from outer-space. Meanwhile, two government agents are closely tracking Jane and the alien, while harbouring their own secrets... 11 12 Luminate Film Tour 2015 THE LUNCHBOX Luminate Film Tour 2015 Luminate, Scotland’s creative ageing festival once again takes place throughout October, across Scotland. Hip Hop-eration introduces a group of older people from New Zealand preparing for the biggest dance competition of their lives, while short film Directed by Tweedie examines the relationship between children and their grandparents. Look out for other titles too, including The Whales of August – a swansong for Bette Davis and Lillian Gish – and The Lunchbox, Ritesh Batra’s film about second chances and growing older. www.luminatescotland.org DARK HORSE: THE INCREDIBLE TRUE STORY OF DREAM ALLIANCE The Lunchbox Dabba Tue 6 Oct at 1.30pm & 6.10pm Ritesh Batra • India/France/Germany/USA 2013 • 1h45m •Digital Hindi and English with English subtitles • PG - Contains infrequent references to suicide and one use of mild language Cast: Irrfan Khan, Nimrat Kaur, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Denzil Smith. Ila (Kaur) is a housewife living in a middle-class neighbourhood with a husband who ignores her. Saajan (Khan) is a beaten down widower about to retire from his number-crunching job. After Ila realises that Saajan is receiving the meals meant for her husband, the two begin sending each other letters through the lunchbox. The Lunchbox paints a nuanced portrait of life in contemporary Mumbai, effortlessly weaving themes of gender values, social class, and generational differences into its core love story. Jan convinces a handful of locals to part with ten pounds a week, finds a thoroughbred mare with a terrible racing record for £300, a stallion past his best, puts them together and - against all the odds - breeds a winner. Luminate Film Tour 2015 HIP HOP-ERATION THE WHALES OF AUGUST Hip Hop-eration The Whales of August Sun 18 at 12.30pm and 6.10pm Tue 27 Oct at 1.30pm & 6.10pm Bryn Evans• New Zealand/USA 2014 • 1h33m • Digital • cert tbc Documentary Lindsay Anderson • USA 1987 • 1h31m • Digital • U Cast: Bette Davis, Lillian Gish, Vincent Price, Ann Sothern, Harry Carey Jr. These senior citizens may each be almost a century young, but for Kara, (94) Maynie, (95) and Terri, (93) the journey to Las Vegas and the World Hip Hop Dance Championships is just the beginning of a life’s journey. Along with twenty-four other nonagenarians they defy the odds and hip-hop their way into the hearts and minds of thousands of young fans from around the world. Along the way we hear how these extraordinary characters contributed to New Zealand as we know it. Their stories are a reminder of their history as a nation and the joy of living life to the fullest. PLUS SHORT Directed by Tweedie Duncan Cowles • UK 2015 • 16m For decades, since they were children, two old sisters have returned to a cottage on an island off the coast of Maine, where in August it has been their custom to watch at twilight as the whales pass on their journeys to wherever it is that whales go. Although they make plans for the future, and argue over whether they should install a new picture window, there is the sense that this will be their last summer in the cottage. A quietly compelling film, featuring wonderful performances from two legends of cinema, Bette Davis and Lillian Gish. There is a story that during filming, Anderson told Gish one day that she had just performed wonderfully in a closeup. “She should,” Davis declared. “She invented them.” Making a film when you’re 87 is less than convenient. As granddad ‘Tweedie’ reluctantly takes up his new role as a filmmaker, we’re invited to examine the difficulties of communication between the generations, whilst exploring that unspoken contract that binds children to their grandparents. The 12.30pm screening of Hip Hop-eration is screening in partnership with DanceLive festival (see pages 14-15).
