Chambers County Superintendent Mike Meadows, Commission Chair Joe Blanks,
and Assistant County Engineer Daniel Lundy inspect the 3 day project of turning CR 139
back to gravel.
Abanda asphalt road
changed back to gravel
On December 7th,
2015, multiple pieces of
large equipment ascended
on CR 139 in Abanda, AL.
Instead of paving the aged
and deteriorated road, the
equipment was there to return the road back to gravel.
CR 139 is located off
of Alabama 77 in the northwest corner of Chambers
County in the Abanda community. County Engineer
Josh Harvill noted that the
paved portion had only one
residence and a very low
traffic volume compared to
other paved roads within
the County. Based on a recent presentation by County
Engineer Harvill, Chambers County has approximately 139 miles of roads
that are in need of significant improvements or reconstruction.
Engineer
Harvill estimated that it
would take about $17 Million to address all 139
miles.
Chambers County, like
most counties in Alabama,
relies heavily on Federal
funding to maintain its system of roads and bridges.
Counties in Alabama currently receive $533,000 in
federal funding that requires a 20% local match
for obligation. However,
only certain roads are classified at a high enough level
to receive those funds. Out
of the 139 miles of failing
roads within Chambers
County, 87 miles (or 63%)
are not eligible for federal
funds. “With the federal
funds, we can resurface
about 3.5 miles a year. We
have 259 miles of routes
eligilbe for federal funds, so
at that rate it would take 74
years just to resurface our
federal routes” said Harvill.
Chambers County has a
total of 435 mile of paved
roads, 176 miles which are
not eligible for federal
funding.
“I know that the citizens of Abanda would
rather drive on a gravel
road than to continue driving around the pot holes on
top of pot holes” said
Chambers County Commission Chair Joe Blanks.

The seasons have
changed once again and
winter is now officially
here. However the temperatures on Christmas day
will feel more like early
spring or early fall, but winter has begun. On Monday
the winter solstice occurred
ushering in winter just in
time for the Christmas holiday. However Mother Nature still has a little catching
up to do with her seasons.
As many would expect
to see snowmen, bare trees,
and cold temperatures this
time of year they will have
to hold off for just a bit
longer as warmer than average temperatures will dominate the Christmas holiday
week along with rainy conditions for a vast majority
of the week. Temperatures
this week will hover in the
upper 70’s for most of the
week as stronger thunderstorms and heavy rainfall is
anticipated over the coming
days.
The winter solstice occurred on Monday at exactly 10:49 p.m. Central
Time in LaFayette, AL.
Uniquely not only does that
day officially start winter,
but it also is the shortest day
of the year in the Northern
Hemisphere and the longest
day of summer in the
Southern Hemisphere. This
relates to the commonly
known terms of midnight
sun and polar night.
The winter solstice
normally follows a pretty
tight calendar falling on a
timeline that span a period
that annually falls between
December 20th and 23rd
each year. The December
23rd date is usually the
most uncommon having
last occurred in 1903 and
will not again occur by estimation until 2303. The
December 20th Solstice is
also highly uncommon with
the next one expected to
come again in the year
2080.
Just as odd as the days
which the solstice occurs
this year’s weather patterns
are also behaving in an odd
manner. Christmas day is
expected to see relief from
the rain showers that will
dominate much of the rest
of the week. The high temperature on Christmas day
is expected to be 77, meaning Christmas will feel
more like Easter to most.
Rain is expected to return
on Saturday as temperatures will again remain in
the upper 70’s both Saturday and Sunday.
Despite the warm temperatures and the lack of
snowfall on the ground
Santa Claus is well aware
that winter has arrived and
will be making his stops in
LaFayette on Christmas as
he annually does despite the
fact of snow or not.
At the November monthly school board meeting, the Chambers County Board of Education honored the teachers of the year from each school in the system, Katie Herston

In the days we now
live in where the threat of
radicalize violence looms
around every corner. Law
enforcement officials are
looking for every angle
they can possibly have to
hold an upper hand on radicalize individuals or structured
terrorist
organizations. Tragic inci-
dents such as those in San
Bernardino, CA or Paris,
France can happen anywhere and at any time. This
month Chambers County
gained a new weapon in its
arsenal to protect its citizens against threats both
foreign and domestic.
The
newest
weapon in the arsenal of
good in Chambers County
does not come in the form
of an armored personal carrier or the latest in firearm
technology, but in the root
of what has allowed

In the Chambers
County community there
are everyday heroes who
move, mold, and shape the
outcome of the community
on a daily basis. These local
heroes move amongst
everyone on a daily basis
they don’t wear tights and
capes, but rather influence
the minds of the next generation of Chambers County
leaders in a classroom setting. The Chambers County
Board of Education took
time out of their busy
schedule at their November
School Board meeting to
recognize a handful of these
everyday local heroes by
bestowing an honor on
these educators and recognizing them as the district’s
teachers of the year.
These
unsung
movers and shakers filled
the Chambers County
Board of Education meeting room at the November
meeting and received a
much earned recognition
during the meeting. Highlighting the recognition ceremony

The Chambers County
Commission
recently
adopted a resurfacing plan
for the next 10 years which
did not include CR 139.
“Due to the deficiency in
road funding, we prioritized
our paving plan based on
safety, traffic, and residences in addition to looking
at
each
road’s
condition.” Commission
Chair Joe Blanks. “I don’t
know if CR 139 would
have ever been paved”.
Chambers County is
not the first County in Alabama to be forced to go
“back to gravel”. Harvill
noted that several counties
in Alabama and from other

Weaver of Valley High
School.
Educators from around
the Chambers County education community were recognized they included
Wendy Johnson of Chambers County Career Technical Center, Valerie Carter of
Bab Harding-Shawmut Elementary School, Mary
Anne Spence of Five Points
Elementary, Jason Phillips
of Huguley Elementary,
Laura Ernst of W.F. Burns
Middle School, Beverly
Kavookjian of LaFayette
High School, Trina Green
of LaFayette Eastside Elementary School, Kim Maddox of J.P. Powell Middle
School, and Cindy Garrett
of Fairfax Elementary.
Each of these educators
who were recognized as
being among the top in the
Chambers County area
were each presented an
award and recognition by
Superintendent Dr. Kelli
Hodge. The awards were
bestowed as a recognition
of their efforts and actions
that contribute to the wellbeing and growth of the
youth of Chambers County
in all grades spanning from
the elementary levels to the
high school levels. As the
children of Chambers
County and the educational
professionals who mold
their lives enjoy a wellearned break leading into
the holiday season, its back

of short weeks as the heroes

community better in the
coming years.
states such as Minnesota,
South Dakota, and Michigan, to name just a few,
have been forced to turn the
asphalt roads back to gravel
in order to provide a better
level of service for the traveling public. Once a road
deteriorates to a level similar to CR 139, the County’s
maintenance options become limited and more expensive. The longer a
paved surface deteriorates
before a new surface is applied, the more expensive it
is to resurface.
“The Commission and
I are very confident that we
can take roads such as CR
139 and maintain them at a
much higher level of service as a gravel road than we
were able to as a paved
road” said Harvill. There
are national studies that
prove it is more efficient to
maintain a road as gravel
for low traffic volumes.
Harvill explained that there
are several other routes that
are being considered for the
“back to gravel” process
but noted that it would take
a resolution by the Commission for each route before the process would
move forward. “It will
never be as good as pavement, but with the funding
crisis that we are up
against, it is the best alter-
native for some of our most
rural roads” said Commission Chair Joe Blanks.
Residents in Abanda
agreed with Commissioner
Blanks. “We’re happy to
see the county crews in our
community” said Lynn
Coker. “Obviously we’d
rather see them paving, but
I’m satisfied with the work
they’ve done. Its much better than what it was.” Mr.
Ed Estes, a resident of CR
39 (directly across Alabama
77 from CR 139), went one
step further “I’ve been
dodging pot holes long
enough, I would be happy
to see the County use the
same process on my road”.
LaFayette, Huguley roads to be resurfaced
By Alton Mitchell
The road to progress
in Chambers County
continues
to
get
smoother and smoother.
As if things in the
County were not already
on the right road the
Chambers County Commission approved a contractor
at
Monday
Evening’s meeting that
will resurface select
roads in the County.
Many of the streets that
are approved for the
repaving project are located in LaFayette, others fall in near the
Huguley Industrial Park
in Chambers County.
The price tag for the
project is what won the
bid for East Alabama
Paving
Company.
Chambers County Engineer Josh Harvill explained to the Chambers
County Commission that
two bids were received
for the project of those
two bids East Alabama
Paving Company offered
the best rate at slightly
above $810,600 for the
project. The second bidder had a price that was
about $50,000 more.
In the city of
LaFayette a stretch of
road near LaFayette
High School and along
Alabama Avenue will be
repaved. In the Huguley
area construction will
focus on an area near the
Huguley Industrial park
including 42nd and 43rd
streets.
The
Chambers
County Commission is
not picking up the tab
alone. At last week’s
LaFayette City Council
meeting. The city council voted to split the cost
of the project with the
County. The awarding of
the contract for the project is the latest step in
the joint venture that has
been in the works for
months.
East
Alabama
Paving Company will be
responsible for the construction side of the project.
East Alabama
Paving is based out of
Opelika, Alabama and is
no stranger to the
LaFayette and Chambers
County community, over
the Summer East Ala-
bama Paving repaved the
entire stretch of U.S.
Highway 431 through
the city of LaFayette.
The contract that was
awarded by the County
Commission will involve the planning
stages as well as the
resurfacing and the
marking of traffic striping on the two projects.
The official date of construction has not yet
been announced.
Christmas 2015
By Paul Richardson
This year’s Christmas
holiday is unique, in a way.
According to the Weather
Channel, it’s the first time
since 1977 that a full moon
has risen on December
25th. And it will not happen
again till 2034. Christmas
of 1977 Jimmy Carter was
president, in the heyday of
cheap gasoline and sky high
21% interest rates. Hard to
believe it was 38 years ago.

Spates. On December
11th, Chief Spates graduated from the FBI National
Academy in Quantico, VA.
The FBI is known for
leading the charge in many
of the largest investigations
in the nation and even expanding its reach into international affairs for expertise
at times. The FBI specializes in every aspect of criminal investigation ranging
from terrorism, to hostage
situations, to psychological
profiles, cyber-attacks, and
much more.
During the 10 week
course at Quantico chief
Spates learned about a variety of the situations that the
FBI specializes in. She now
brings this gained expertise
back to her local community. The honor bestowed
upon goes far beyond the
reaches of just actually
graduating the program, but
also shows the recognition
of a job well done that was
a pre-requisite for Spates to
be selected by the FBI for
the program. She was selected for the position based
upon her proven track
record and performance
skills in her position.
Spates becomes a
newly assigned alumni in
addition to 229 others who
graduated with her at the
December 11th ceremony.
In addition she is only the
second officer in Lanett to
have the privilege to say
that they have finished the
training course successfully.
She also the only female
police officer to in her department to have finished
the program.
Since her completion
of the program, Chief
Spates is now back on the
streets of Lanett sharing her
earned techniques on the
streets of the city of Lanett
which is sure to have a ripple effect in the law enforcement
community
county wide.

Remembering Nadine Earls
By Paul Richardson
A most unusual sight
in the Oakdale Cemetery in
Lanett, is the grave of little
Nadine Earls. She was two
and a half years old when
she died of measles on December 18, 1933.
All she asked for
Christmas that year was a
doll house, and her father
set about months earlier to
give his daughter her wish.
But sadly, the small child
died just days before receiving her Christmas gift.
As a memorial to
“Little Nadine,” her mother
and father had a real doll

Mikes’s Musings
New Star Wars movie a must see
By Mike Wilcox, Publisher
I readily admit I got
caught up in the Star Wars
hype. This holiday’s blockbuster movie was a must
see for me, and I can’t tell
you the last time I saw a
movie the first weekend of
its debut. As with most
movies that come with this
much hype and publicity, I
was prepared to be disappointed. That preparation
was needless. The movie
was outstanding- some of
the best entertainment I
have seen in years.
Disney Studios, which
purchased the rights to Star
Wars from George Lucas,
had a great deal of consternation about how their first
attempt at recreating the
Star Wars saga would play
to a new audience. After
all, it had been 38 years
since the original Star Wars
played on the big screen,
and young adults and
teenagers weren’t necessary familiar for the story
line, or even what Star
Wars was about. The movie
could either make billions
for Disney, or cause the
company to go bankrupt.
From all indications
Walt Disney can rest easy
in his grave. The first
weekend alone grossed a
whopping $250 million. By
year’s end that number is
expected to reach one billion. No other movie has
ever come close to that
number.
I’m not a Star Wars
geek. I saw the first movie,
and Empire Strikes Back,
but that’s it. I’m not a guy
who likes sci fi stuff. But, I
must confess, this movie
had you gripping the side
of your seat from the very
first minute to the last. Director J.J. Abrams performed the impossible by
taking what some would
consider a complex plot
and making it simple, so
that all ages would understand and be entertained.
I must say Harrison
Ford as Han Solo, was as
swashbuckling as ever. At
73 years of age he played
the part of hero better than
most 40 year olds. Carrie
reprised her role as
Princess Leia, although
now she is General Leia,
and Mark Hamill as Luke
Skywalker, who we saw for
a couple of minutes, were
showing their age. It was
great to see the original actors in their original roles,
however only Ford had a
major part.
Of course there are
still the loveable characters
all Star Wars movies have.
Chewbacca, as Han Solos
sidekick was fantastic.
Then there was R2D2. A
new droid, however stole
the show, and it was he
who had the missing puzzle- the piece the bad guys
were attempting to find
throughout the movie.
Daisy Ridley and John
Bojega play the unlikely
“good guy” pair. They team
with Han Solo to fight the
bad guys called the First
Order. The First Order has
taken over the galaxy and
only Ridley, Bojega and
Ford, along with a group of
resistance fighers are fighting back. It is the trio’s mission to locate Luke
Skywalker, the last known
Jedi, who can restore peace
and order to the galaxy, before the First Order finds
and destroys him.
I was listening to a
radio review a few days
ago, and they mentioned
one scene that was probably one of the most gruesome in movie history. I
wouldn’t go that far, but it
is not for the faint of heart.
I won’t spoil the movie for
those that haven’t seen it,
but it definitely is a
shocker. A very emotional,
tear jerking scene flips to
death and destruction.
Star Wars: The Force
Has Awakened is a must
see for everyone during the
holidays. It is the best 2
hours and 15 minutes of entertainment money can buy.
Wishing everyone a
very Merry Christmas and
Happy New Year. May
2016 be your best year
ever.
Jesus was not born on December 25th
By Paul Richardson
So why do Christians
celebrate Christmas on that
date?
As it turns out, a
whole bunch of pagan gods
were said to have been
born on this date. In fact,
pagans first celebrated a
December 25th festival
honoring all their gods, including a heroic supernatural figure that visited an
evergreen tree and left gifts
on long before Jesus was
ever born. His name was
Nimrod.
From its early Babylonian roots, the celebration of the birth (or
"rebirth") of the sun god on
December 25th came to be
celebrated all over the ancient world.
The winter solstice,
(Dec 22nd) was the shortest day of the year. By Dec
25th, people could notice
that days were getting
slightly longer.
According to ancient
Babylonian
tradition,
Samurais, wife of Nimrod,
(who eventually became
known as the goddess
Easter in other pagan religions) claimed that after
the untimely death of her
husband, a full grown ever-
green tree sprang up
overnight from a dead tree
stump.
Samurais claimed that
Nimrod would visit that
evergreen tree and leave
gifts each year on the anniversary of his birth, December 25th.
From ancient writings,
much is known about this
man. From the original
fable peddled by Samurais
(also called the "Queen of
Heaven") came the tradition for pagans to go out to
the holy "groves" and leave
gifts for Nimrod (who later
came to be worshipped as
"Baal") at an evergreen tree
on December 25th.
This is the true origin
of the Christmas tree and
gift giving.
After Nimrod's death
(c. 2167 BC), Samurais
promoted the belief that he
was a god himself, since
most of the other major
gods were believed to have
been born on the same day.
The pagans called
their holiday "Yule," and it
has been celebrated in
northern Europe for Millennia. Yule logs were traditionally lit throughout
northern Europe to honor
the pagan god Thor.
The ancient festival
would continue until the
Yule log burned out, which
could take up to a dozen
days. This is where we get
the so-called "12 days of
Christmas" tradition.
“Yule-day,” the 25th
of December and the night
that preceded it, “Mothernight,” as it was called by
our Pagan Anglo-Saxon
ancestors, was observed
long before there was a
Christian Christmas.
So when you offer
"yuletide" greetings, you
are actually acknowledging
Nimrod's birthday.
In fact, Wicca followers, (sometimes spelled
Wicka), neo-pagans whose
beliefs stem from ancient
Celtic rituals, still celebrate
Yule to this day in the same
way. Many of them think it
is incredibly funny when
Christians use the pagan
word “Yule” in ceremony
since Yule is one of the
most important holidays of
the year for them.
But regardless, let’s
remember our Christian
tradition, the reason for the
season, and carry on as we
have for 2000 years.
That’s what life is all about
By Jody Fuller
Last weekend, I was at
a speaking engagement in
Biloxi, located on the beautiful Gulf of Mexico. This
weekend, I was in Kuwait
City, located on the beautiful Persian Gulf. I’ll give
the edge to Biloxi, but only
because of the short driving
distance. It took 28 hours,
four screaming babies,
three airplanes, two taxicabs and a partridge in a
palm tree to get over here.
The journey was challenging, to say the least, but the
destination was worth it.
They have me on the 14th
floor overlooking the Persian Gulf. Life is good,
sometimes.
But I digress — I’m
blessed. Professionally, it’s
been an outstanding year.
Personally, not so much.
I’ve had more ups and
downs than my plane experienced during the flight
from Atlanta to New York
on Thursday. I don’t usually get bothered by turbulence, but it was pretty bad.
In fact, the kind lady sitting
next to me, Magalie, a New
Yorker of Haitian descent
living in Georgia, grabbed
ahold of my arm a couple
of times. She almost
yanked it off one time, and
that’s ok. I was there for
her, because that’s what life
is all about. Besides, “God
got this,” she said, and He
did. We had a great talk, but
let’s just say she did most
of the talking. I was the listener and a good one at that.

about the money or the

sense of humor and laughter can most definitely
bridge the bad times with
the good. Prayer helps, too.
That’s what life is all about.
Last year, Santa came
to my home and brought a

this year, I taught that same

that bicycle. There’s no
doubt that this was the
highlight of my year. We

What’s On My Mind :
What I Want for Christmas; Sports Edition
By Donnell Suggs
It’s two days till
Christmas and all through
the house not a creature
was stirring except for me.
My entire family is sleep
and I’m up past two in the
morning
writing
my
weekly column. My theme
was holiday-based, the plan
was to list what I wanted
most for Christmas. That
should have been simple
enough except for the fact
that I have been so blessed
by the good Lord that I really can’t seem to think
about what I need that I
don’t already have -a wonderful wife, healthy children, a great career, warm
home, good friends, tattoos
that I don’t regret some 10
years later. Then it hit me;
I’m in desperate need (or is
it want) for a championship, in particular a
championship for one of
the sports teams that I root
for. This might be the only
time in my life I wish I was
from Oakland, California,
with all due respect to the
Bay Area and it’s residents.
All I want for Christmas is:
For the New York
Mets to go back to the
World Series in 2016 and
win it. I was eight years old
the last time the Mets won
a world championship and
to be honest I don’t remember much of what happened
next. I’d like to be able to
take full advantage of a parade, buying a World Series
champs t-shirt, bragging to
Yankees and Braves fans
and crying at the end of a
baseball season for a good
reason for a change.
To see the New York
Jets finish this season in the
NFL postseason. The Jets my lifelong football teamis currently 9-5 and in a
pretty good position for a
wild card playoff spot but if
you know New York Jet
football like I do, you know
nothing is ever set in stone.
I don’t want to be as bold
as to publicly ask for the
Jets to win an actual playoff game because if you
know New York Jet football like I do….. For
Auburn to win the Birmingham Bowl on Wednesday, December 30 against
Memphis and finish the
season 7-6.
For Jeremy Johnson to
start that game and every
game during the 2016 season and have a modicum of
a season that we all unfairly
predicted for him this year.
And then get drafted to the
New York Jets. Hey it’s my
list and I can dream can’t I?
I want the Carolina
Panthers and Cam Newton
to play in the Super Bowl
with an undefeated record.
For people all over the
United States of America the best place to live on
God’s green Earth- to realize that guns don’t kill people, people without sports
teams to obsess over do.
Roll Tide. War Eagle. Find
something to love so you
don’t have anymore room
for hate. Except for the
Yankees, it’s always going
to be okay to hate the Yankees.
For the NCAA and the
NBA to agree that one-anddone is still too soon for
guys to play in the NBA
and for the minimum age to
enter the draft to be raised
to 19. Both the college and
professional game will
benefit.
For everyone in my
house to be gone on an errand for the two and a half
hours that the Cleveland at
Golden State game is on
ABC on Christmas Day.
This one I have to watch in
(heavenly) peace and quiet,
Finally, for every
reader of The LaFayette
Sun to have a Merry
Christmas (and to remember to hate the New York
Yankees, don’t forget to do
that. Both the Yankees and
Bobby Petrino.)

The Lanett Panthers
dominated their competition over the weekend at
the Dadeville Christmas
Basketball Tournament,
winning both of their
games by double-figures.
The Panthers opened
the tournament on Friday,
December 18 against the
Class 5A, Region 5 Tallassee Tigers (2-7). Lanett
defeated Tallassee 68-38,
winning the right to play
on Saturday against the
Class 1A, Region 1-Area 7
Notasulga Blue Knights.
This game would be
much closer but once
again the Panthers -last
season’s runner-up to
LaFayette for the Area 8
title-won again, 60-46.
Before heading off to
Dadeville, the Panthers
played their final home
game of 2015 against the
Harris County Tigers
(Hamilton, Georgia).
Opening the game
with a 20-14 advantage
after the first quarter, the
Panthers turned in their
most impressive defensive
quarter of the season holding their guest to two
points during the second
quarter, while again scoring 20 points. About the
defensive effort Panther
head coach Richard Carter
said, “We played an extremely good to not great
game tonight..”
The Panthers would
continue to outscore the
Tigers, 21-11, during the
third quarter before scaling
back during the final pe-
riod.
Sophomore forward
Anquavious Pollard led all
scorers with a season high
28 points. Freshman guard
Terrion Truitt added 19
points. Harris County was
led in scoring by senior
guard Toriq Holloway
with 13 points.
The 10-3 Lanett Panthers will next play in the
Shaw Holiday Tournament
in Columbus, Georgia.
The Panthers will open
play against Douglass
High School on Monday,
December 21.
Due to print deadlines
the tournament statistics
and results will be in next
week’s LaFayette Sun and
on the papers website

Chambers County unemployment drops, Alabama rises
By Alton Mitchell
Job seekers in Chambers County still seem to
be finding work in the
County as the 2015 year
continues to show declines
for another month in the
Chambers County. The
state of Alabama’s numbers did not fare as well as
the County’s as the state as
a whole saw increases in
unemployment numbers
for the month of November.
Chambers County has
been seeing numbers continue on a downward slope
for much of the 2015 year.
That number for the month
of November showed a decline in the unemployment
rate to 5.4% that is down a
tenth of a point from the
previous month when the
rate was at 5.5%. Better
news looking further out
shows that for the same
period a year ago the unemployment rate in Chambers County was at 5.6%.
Data released by the Alabama Department of
Labor shows that 812 person were without work,
but actively seeking it in
Chambers County during
November. The previous
month that number was
824 residents without
work, but looking in the
market.
Numbers for the state
of Alabama showed an increase. During the month
of October the statewide
unemployment rate was at
5.9%, however during the
month of November the
number increase to 6.0%
showing that 128,105 Alabamians were without
work, but still looking.
Many local counties
also saw increases those
include Lee County which
normally has some of the
lowest
unemployment
rates in the state. Lee
County saw an increase
unemployment numbers in
November to 4.7% that
was up from 4.5% in October. The same time a
year ago that number was
also at 4.5%. Russell
County also showed an in-
crease rising from 5.4% to
5.5% in November. Chambers County’s neighbor to
the
north
Randolph
County also increased a
tenth of a point from 5.4%
to 5.5%.
Numbers in the state
fluctuated in both directions in the month of November. The highest
unemployment rate in the
state came in at 13.5% in
Wilcox County. Wilcox
County is located Southwest of Montgomery. The
lowest numbers in the
state came in in Shelby
County located south of
Birmingham where the unemployment rate is only
4.0%.
Unemployment
numbers leading up to the
holiday season tend to traditionally show growth as
many retailers hire on
extra staff for the holiday
season, however layoffs
are common during the
first of the year as employers see declining sales following the holidays and
decreased demand leading
to layoffs.

Christmas under attack
By Bill Frazer
If I were a Muslim,
Buddhist or an atheist, I
would be a leader in condemnation of a national
holiday based on the celebration of the birthday of
Jesus. However, when the
Constitution was drawn,
the leaders acknowledged
that this was a Christian nation. The language in the
Constitution that spelled
out the separation of
Church and State was
placed there to prevent any
one Christian group from
enforcing their interpretation of Christianity upon
any one sect.
Now, how would any
small-town journalist like
me pretend to know what
the framers of the Constitution had in mind? The
scholars, who have done
extensive research on the
principles which this nation
was developed, agree that it
is based on Biblical principles.
The issue is that we are
approaching the point
where a vast number of the
citizens of this nation are
not of the Christian faith.
The old Christian generation is being displaced by
godless beliefs (atheism)
and other faiths. Naturally,
there will be objections to
Christian holidays such as
Easter and Christmas, especially since Christmas was
designated a national holiday by Congress.
Wikipedia states that
Christmas was originated
by Romans as a celebration
of the winter solstice. The
Christians used this winter
holiday to celebrate the
birth of Jesus. However,
nowhere is it recorded in
the Bible the date of the
birth of Jesus. Historians
contend that it was around
October since scriptures
state that the shepherds
were still tending sheep in
the fields. In December the
shepherds would have
brought the sheep into shelters.
The controversy continues as even some theologians criticize Christmas as
being pagan rooted. However, no one can deny the
spirit of Christmas. It is a
season of expressing love,
of sharing with others, of
family togetherness, of fellowship with our fellow
man, of tolerance and forgiveness and a time of expressing our appreciation
for all our Blessings. What
is wrong with that even if
you are not a Believer?
My thoughts, if you
leave the Birth Of Christ
out of the Christmas holidays, it is a major mistake.
The Old Testament records
over, over, and over again
what happens when GOD
is left out of our lives. If
over the country. Based on
the freedom of Christians to
celebrate their belief, other
religions and atheists have
begun publicly expressing
their viewpoint. A lot of
businesses and media peronnel resist saying Merry
Christmas but instead substitute Happy Holiday. Public education facilities are
resisting the Christmas
message as it is an offense
to a large segment of the
student body.
I am glad that I live in
a part of America where
Christian values are still
our guidelines.
God Bless America on
the celebration of the birthday of a KING.

Inside The Statehouse
By Steve Flowers
As we look back
over the past year’s political events one week
stands out. During one
week in the middle of
2015, three momentous
events occurred. All three
came down bang, bang,
bang in the week leading
up to the fourth of July.
First was the landmark decision by the
U.S. Supreme Court,
which deemed same sex
marriage legal and the
law of the land. Then the
historic BP settlement,
which granted Alabama
$1.3 billion for environmental recovery and an
additional $1 billion for
economic losses. Finally,
was Governor Bentley’s
executive order removing
all of the confederate
flags from the Capitol.
All three decisions
will have an impact on
state politics. How will
these three events affect
Alabama politics in the
next few years?
The removal of the
confederate flags affects
only Gov. Robert Bentley. Since Gov. Bentley is
prohibited by the constitution from seeking a
third term as governor
and at that time he will
be 76, so it is doubtful
that Bentley runs for office again. Therefore, it
has no political effect.
However, years from
now it will be considered
as a positive reflection on
Bentley’s tenure as governor. Some have suggested that it will be one
of his legacies.
What about the BP
settlement? This windfall
to the State General Fund
will have a positive impact for Alabama’s finances for the next two
decades. $55 million a
year is nothing to sneeze
at. It will help legislators
who are not yet on the
scene balance the state’s
budgets. However, what
are the political ramifications, if any? Negligible
at best. Governor Bentley
again claims the spotlight
and will be able to claim
credit for the BP settlement as it came down
during his administration.
That brings us to the
same sex marriage issue.
Like the BP ruling, it is
all over but the shouting.
It does not matter if less
than a decade ago Alabamians voted overwhelmingly
for
a
constitutional amendment outlawing same sex
marriage. The U.S.
Supreme Court is the ultimate omnipotent authority and they have
spoken. It is over. It is the
law.
My prognostication
is that this issue has legs
and the fallout will be
felt in Alabama politics
into the 2018 Governor’s
Race. Roy Moore likes to
ride horses. In fact, he
rides his horse to vote at
his home in Gallion in
rural Etowah County.
Our Chief Justice Roy
Moore has got a horse to
ride into the 2018 Governor’s Race.
Like Bentley, Moore
is prohibited from running for his same office
again. You cannot run for
a judgeship in Alabama
after age 70. Roy Moore
will be 72 in 2018. You
can bet your bottom dollar he will be a candidate
for governor.
Moore made his
mark by running with a
granite monument of the
Ten Commandments. He
gallantly stood by his
convictions to not remove it from the judicial
building. He lost his
Chief Justice position
over his stance. Alabamians did not forget his
stand. Ten years later
they put him back in his
job as Chief Justice.
My belief is that this
issue will not be forgotten nor taken lying down.
We are one of, if not the
most religious states in
America. It is a pivotal
issue for Christians. It
resonates and it will be a
game changer. They will
be reminded every time
they read their Bible.
Alabama
politics
clearly dictates that race
and religion drive the
vote in the Heart of
Dixie. Roy Moore knows
his constituency. They
know him and believe me
he is their man. Studies
have shown that if Alabama is the Heart of the
Bible Belt, the buckle is
a stretch of the State just
north of Birmingham.
Moore chose an evangelical church in Kimberly
in rural northern Jefferson County to throw
down the gauntlet. He
told his folks in the Heart
of the Bible Belt, “Welcome to the new world.
It’s just changed for you
Christians. You are going
to be persecuted according to the U.S. Supreme
Court dissents.”
In a crowded field,
the evangelical vote becomes paramount. We
will have eight to ten
folks running for Governor in 2018. The vote becomes splintered maybe
along
geographical
friends and neighbors
lines. However, religion
trumps geography in Al-
abama politics. Roy
Moore has found his
horse and it secures him
a place in the runoff in
2018.
See you next week.

An Angel’s Favorite Greeting
By Roger Campbell
“What is your greatest or most distressing problem?”
If your answer to this question is the same as the majority of those responding to it in a nationwide survey, it is “anxiety,” another word for fear.
Fear is an enemy of us all, bringing depression, stifling ability, draining energy, diminishing courage and robbing life of adventure and success.
No wonder “Fear not” was the favorite greeting of angels sent to announce the birth of the One who came to bring peace.
When Gabriel appeared to Mary, revealing her part in the coming birth of Christ, she was frightened until he spoke these two angelic faith builders
that announced he was there to let her know she had found favor with God. There was nothing for Mary to worry about. Her fears were groundless.
She was to be part of a miracle. Her son would be the long awaited Savior.
Only one verse in the Bible is taken to tell about Joseph’s discovery that his bride-to-be was with child, but the emotional trauma this disturbing
news brought to him must have been devastating.
Joseph’s engagement to lovely Mary had undoubtedly caused him to start building dreams about their life together. He was a carpenter and would
be able to provide his new bride with beautiful things made with his own hands. He had longed for the day he and Mary would become one, but now
his world had come crashing down. Mary would give birth to a child and he would not be the father. At this distressing time, an angel was sent to
comfort and give guidance to this brokenhearted man.
Calling Joseph by name, the angel went immediately to the heart of his misery. Beginning with the favorite angelic fear fighter, “Fear not,” he
explained that the virgin birth of Mary’s child would be a miracle planned by the Lord (Matthew 1:20; Isa.7:14).
What good news! The opposite of Joseph’s fears was in the making. And this is often true for us all. Too often, we live as if Murphy’s Law (whatever can go wrong will) is divine, expecting the worst and allowing this pessimistic premise to fill our hearts with fear; forgetting that God makes
everything work together for good in the lives of those who love and trust Him (Romans 8:28). What Joseph had seen as the end of his dreams as a
husband turned out to be the answer to his deepest spiritual needs as a man. His fears had been a waste of time because an eternal plan was emerging that would bless him and millions of others.
On that first Christmas night, the angelic message given to frightened shepherds caring for their sheep on the hills outside Bethlehem was the same
as the one given to Mary and Joseph: “Fear not!”
These frightened men would learn, as can we in our trembling times, that the end of fear and the birth of joy are both wrapped up in Mary’s boy.
So when your greatest or most distressing problem rears its ugly head, remember the favorite Christmas greeting of angels given on that holy night
so long ago: “Fear Not!” And relax in the reason for the season: “Unto you is born a Savior, who is the Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:11).

Just So You’ll Know
By Paul Richardson
Normally I am a
fairly easy going, live
and let live kind of fellow. A lot of things
stroke my fur the wrong
way, but I try to ignore
them. But occasionally
something comes along
that just rips me to the
bone.
As Merle Haggard
used to say, “It gets on
the fighting side of me.”
And that thing is what
some people call Red
Eye Gravy.
Folks, let me tell
you, there is only ONE
recipe for Red Eye
Gravy and it cannot be
tamper with, adjusted,
fixed, improved on, or
changed in any way.
Any deviation from the
one and only recipe and
it is NOT Red Eye.
To make Red Eye
Gravy, start with a small
amount of grease in the
bottom of a skillet, just
enough to cover the bottom. Get it hot and fry a
slab of sugar cured ham,
about three minutes on
each side.
Take up the ham
and turn up the heat on
the grease. You will notice small, round red
specks in the pan that resemble “eyes.” This is
from the small sugar
crystals that cook out of
the ham.
Just as the grease
begins to bubble, pour in
about one quarter cup of
left over morning coffee.
Nothing else! No
water, no flour, no salt,
no pepper, nothing!
THAT’S RED EYE
GRAVY!
I do know of some
cooks who fry salted
ham and add a spoon of
brown sugar, but that is
still not the real thing.
The gravy should
then be poured over the
slice of ham and the biscuits sopped accordingly.
So what has ruffled my feathers so….? I
recently visited a famous restaurant that
claims it has real, old
time country cooking. (I
won’t call any names,
but it’s the one with the
rocking chairs on the
porch and the country
store inside.)
I ordered “country
fried steak” topped with
“red eye gravy” from
the menu. Forty five
minutes later when it finally came, (by that time
I was licking the table
for crumbs,) there was
something on my plate
that looked like reconstituted Spam covered in
a pile of cool whip.
“What’s this,” I
demanded to know?
As soon as my
waitress finished showing her ignorance, I in-
formed her it was not
red eye gravy, not even
close. Our argument escalated to include the
manager and the cook.
Now don’t get me
wrong, I have nothing
against Spam. Lord
knows I have eaten
enough to be an authority.
But my problem
was the topping. That
pile of white stuff on top
of my so-called steak
may have been a lot of
things, but it wasn’t
even a good imitation.
I did not eat it and
I did not pay for it. And
when I got home, thanks
to the Internet, I took my
battle right to the top
