THE SECURITY MESSENGER
Chairman’s Comments
April/May 2013 Page 2
By Chairman Chad Parris, CSC
Although it may sound a bit corny, I must say that I’m very proud to be a part of a
wonderful chapter of dedicated security professionals that is truly dedicated to supporting not just the chapter but the security industry as a whole. The surprising
events of the April 2013 chapter meeting was just another example of why I am so
proud. ASIS Regional VP Tom Scott, Corporate Security Director for Lubrizol visited the chapter bearing gifts. Well, not gifts but awards. I’m so proud to say that
the chapter won honorable mention for the 2012 I.B. Hale Chapter of the Year
Award and for Chapter Newsletter of the Year for Group VI. Many thanks go to
everyone who helped contribute to this wonderful honor. Special thanks goes to
Scott Tucker (and his wife) who put together a very comprehensive I.B. Hale submission package and
Chris Wilson who works tirelessly on the chapter Newsletter. The whole chapter should be congratulated!
As we continue to ramp up for the Columbus Chapter Annual Seminar and Exhibits in May, it is vitally
important that each and every one of us help promote this premier one-day educational event. ASE ViceChair Dan Schmelzer and his committee have worked very hard and have an excellent agenda of educational topics throughout the day as well as an exhibit hall filled with quality security solution providers.
Don’t forget, the event will be held on May 16th at the Aladdin Shrine Center near Easton from 8:00 am to
3:30 pm. Be sure to visit the chapter website www. asis27.org to review the agenda and register.
Be Safe and we’ll see you and the event!
Be Safe,
Chad
Chapter Chair Parris on finding out from ASIS RVP Tom Scott, our chapter won
honorable mention for the 2012 I.B. Hale Chapter of the Year Award and for Chapter
Newsletter of the Year for Group VI.

Crime Prevention Corner: Part Three of a Three Part Series on Travel Tips
Whether you take to the road for business or pleasure, it is critical that you take your crime prevention instincts with
you. Being aware of the threat of crime -- and what you can do to prevent it -- will go a long way toward making
your trip safe and successful. The National Crime Prevention Council offers travel safety tips.
At the Hotel
• Never leave luggage unattended in public areas.
• Keep all hotel doors and window locked.
• Insist that hotel personnel write down your room number at check-in rather than stating out loud the
number of your room.
• Learn the locations of fire exits, elevators, and public phones, in case of an emergency.
• Make sure your room has an indoor viewer (peephole) and dead bolt lock.
• Keep valuables -- laptops, cellular phones, jewelry, cash, etc. -- in the hotel safe when you’re not using
them.
• Before taking a cab, ask the staff about directions and estimated costs to familiarize yourself with the
area and avoid being taken advantage of by someone preying on a traveler.
• Always verify who’s at your hotel room door. Don’t open the door to someone you don’t know. If an
unexpected visitor claims to be a hotel employee, call the front desk to confirm.
• Don’t announce room numbers in public. Keep track of your room keys.

Mike Womer became the first Columbus Chapter Chairman to have been elected to a two-year automatic progression
from Vice Chairman in 1996 to Chairman in 1997. From this point forward the Chairman is no longer an elected office. The Vice Chairman which is an elected position moves up to the Chapter Chairman position the next year.
The Columbus Chapter Officers for 1997 were:
•

•
Chairman
Vice Chairman
Secretary
Treasurer

A look at our guest speakers in 1997:
• Our January guest speaker was Commander Kim Jacobs, Communications Bureau, The Columbus Police Department (current Chief of Police for The Columbus Division of Police). Commander Jacobs presented an overview
of the Emergency 911 program in Columbus. Her program discussed the first ten years of operation including
some stats, funding, and cellular impact. How the system actually works, and how Columbus dispatches emergency calls. Commander Jacobs in her presentation stated that Columbus takes 650 to 800 calls per day, of which
25% of the calls are considered non-emergency.
• Our February meeting was about the Ohio Peace Officer
Training Council’s (OPOTC) Private Security, Curriculum
Revisions. The program was presented by Columbus Chapter
members Bill Ensign, Lynn Woodard, CPP, John Tucker, CPP

a concept adapted to introduce a student to ASIS. If the student pre-registered for the meeting, the chapter
paid for their lunch as our special guest. Our April guest speaker was Thomas W. Rice, Sr., Director of
Public Safety, City of Columbus, Ohio. He updated the chapter on the activities of his office since September, 1995.

In October we held our 1997 Mini-Seminar. It was held at Sanese Services Conference Center. The cost
was $10.00 for lunch only (Chapter Members Only), $25.00 Seminar Only, or $35.00 Seminar and Luncheon. The half day session featured Irvin D. Sugg, Jr., Supervisory Agent, Computer Instructor, FBI Training Academy, Quantico, VA. His presentation at our May Business Crimes Forum was so well received
he was asked to come back for an extended presentation (“Internet Investigations”). The session brought
106 members and guests.
Thomas A. Young, Attorney at Law, Porter, Wright, Morris, and Arthur, Columbus, Ohio was our guest
speaker at the November meeting. He presented those in attendance with a legal update on issues from the
Central Ohio area.
The December meeting was our traditional “Chapter Year in Review” address given by our Chapter Chairman, Michael A. Womer, CPP who looked back on 1997, reviewing each meeting and chapter activities.
It was also the forum where the 1998 Chapter Officers – Elect were sworn in to the offices to which they
were elected.
The following are some additional points of interest that took place in 1997:
•
•
•
•
•
•
In January Chairman Mike Womer, CPP announced an initiative to compose a brochure on Workplace
Violence. Also, Mike announced he would like to establish a web site for the Columbus Chapter on the
World Wide Web.
Starting in 1997 in order to bring another method of meeting notifications to our members we created a
“broadcast fax” list and sent out meeting announcements to all of those members with fax machines.
In April, thanks to the hard work of Chapter Chairman Mike Womer, the Columbus Chapter web site went
on- line.
In May the Central Ohio Chapter of the International Facility Management Association held a half day
seminar on the topic “Security…Trends on Preventing Violence in the Workplace”. Four of the six sessions were presented by Columbus Chapter members. Elliot Boxerbaum, CPP, Director of Security for
Grant/Riverside Hospitals presented two topics: Workplace Violence and also New Technology. Paul
King CPP, Operations Manager for Doyle Protective Services, gave a session on Implementing Security.
Pat Gleason, Vice President and General Manager of Doyle Protective services, presented the topic: Low
Cost, No Cost Alternatives.
In the July/August newsletter, Editor Jack Mehan welcomed several new advertisers to the newsletter. He
stated that the newsletter advertising fees pay for about 95% of the costs of providing the member with a
quality newsletter.
Also in the July/August newsletter an article by ASIS Executive Director Michael J. Stack was reprinted.
The article was about customer service. While reading the article I thought it was interesting that headquarters handled an average of 5,300 calls per month, and has individually responded to over 26,000 inquiries to date in 1997.
This concludes my look at the year 1997. Next month I will profile the chapter in 1998.

April/May 2013 Page 23
As a precursor for our June tour of the Hollywood
Casino (see page 22) the Chapter was pleased to
have Karen Huey, Director of Enforcement for the
Ohio Casino Control Commission give a presentation. She discussed the mission, duties of the Casino
Control Commission and the experiences of going
from 0 casinos 2 years ago to 4 today. Karen also
shared some of the incidents they have happened so
far as well as little known facts. Example: An agent
is not allowed to gamble at any casino.
