The main site is located at Odori Park. There is a bit of a story behind this. About 20 years ago, a Hokkaido University student saw Yosakoi Festival in Kochi Prefecture. He was so impressed with the performance and decided to start the similar festival in Hokkaido. The first festival was held in 1992 and it was very small. There were only 10 teams of 1,000 participants. But it has been growing bigger and bigger each year and now over 300 teams of 33,000 participants take part in the festival! There are places where visitors can take part in the dance, so Yosakoi Soran Festival is a lot of fun and a good opportunity to make local friends!
