Bike Mechanic’s Advice Maintenance Tubeless Tires More and more mountainbikers use tubeless tires. It is a good decision for a lot of bikers. The disadvantage is the price, but there is a very big advantage. You won’t have flat tires anymore. Our trails are in the “mondi”, that means rough and unpaved areas. The single tracks are full with cactus and big sharp stones. Riding this tracks without being afraid to get a flat tire, is a lot more fun! Tubeless tires also needs a little bit of maintenance. Take the big thorns out of your tire, put your finger on the hole and turn the wheel as far as the hole is on the underside. When the slime doesn’t come out anymore, your leak is fixed. Check frequently if there is enough slime in the tire. When you are losing air, it is possible there is not enough slime in the tire. Also check the valves. The slime gets in the valve, opening this, for example when you inflate the tires. Slime is not working inside the valve, so it is leaking there a little bit. You must replace the inner side of the valve, when it is possible. If your tires have rimstrips than be careful with levers when you open the tire. When you damage this rimstrip you have to renew it. Before a ride, check always the pressure in the tire. Have fun on our single tracks! Frank. Protect yourself, always wear a helmet! Cycling is evidently a sport that requires protective head gear. Since bicycle helmets protect our heads and can help to prevent injuries that may result in serious damage to the brain, you would think this is reason enough to encourage all bike riders to wear helmets. Unfortunately, it isn't the case. There are still far too many bikers that ride without helmets. If any form of biking warrants the use of a helmet, then surely mountain biking, which is one of the more dangerous forms of biking, should make helmets mandatory. How do bicycle helmets protect the head? They provide protection to the skull during a head impact by helping to slow the deceleration of the head upon impact. The helmet absorbs kinetic energy through its internal layer of crushable foam. It has been argued that wearing a helmet will not guarantee the prevention of head injuries due to cycling. While that is true, the statistics still show that helmet wearers involved in bike accidents involving the head are less likely to be killed or be seriously or permanently injured compared to nonhelmet wearers. The statistics show that "non-helmeted riders are 14 times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash than helmeted riders.” It has also been shown that “bicycle helmets reduce the risk of head injury by as much as 85 percent and the risk of brain injury by as much as 88 percent." It is undeniable that "bicycle helmets offer substantial protection to the forehead and midface." Start at De Freewieler and go in direction of Hato (North). At the round-about turn right to Kaya Amsterdam. Go straight till the crossing point with Kaya Korona. Turn right on Kaya Korona until you reach Kaya Esther. Turn left at Kaya Esther. In here the paved road turns into a dirt road. Go strait on and follow the green stones in the east direction. The dirt road ends at the landfill, turn left, direction Lagoen. 200m Before the end of the road turn left again on the dirt road. Climb the hill, on top go right through the old gate. After 300m on your left side is a goat trail. So turn left and follow this trail. Its about 5 km long. There are a few bad spots on this trial, up and down. At the end you’ll see a goat farm. Drive carefully and leave the goats were they are. Follow the trail to the left till you cross the main road “Kralendijk– Rincon”. Cross this road to the direction of Seru Largu. Climb the Seru Largu. It’s a long and heavy uphill, on top you can make the loop for a beautiful view. Go downwards to Kralendijk. Be careful when you go down. When you pass the houses in North di Salina take a look at the beautiful Indians signs on the walls of the houses.
