Art/Dance/Music
JUST FOR KIX DANCE
ALBERT LEA ART CENTER/
AND ART ON BROADWAY GIFT SHOP
Gallery shows each month throughout the year feature
local and area artists. “Art on Broadway” Gift Shop sells
artist's work and hard to find art supplies.
The annual Art and Garden Tour is always a welcome
family event!
Classes are designed for both students and adults, so
check the Albert Lea Tribune and watch for The Community Education booklet that comes out for summer, fall,
and winter.
Families always enjoy the “Festival of Trees”, with more
than 70 trees decorated by groups and individuals. They will be featured from the end of
November through December.
Just For Kix is a unique dance program offering core
classes in high kick. We also offer jazz, lyrical, hip
hop, light routines and partner dances. Our classes
are grouped by age, not ability or experience, with a
focus on teamwork. Any skill level is welcome and
there are no tryouts. Every Just For Kix dancer will
be given the opportunity to excel with the new skills
and techniques they learn at class, in a nurturing
and productive environment.

Will hold day camps around the county during
the months of June, July, & August. So far we
are planning on camps being in Albert Lea and
Emmons. Possible day camp locations will be
Alden, Glenville, Hayward, and Hartland,
5 day camp at Prairie River Camp includes: high and
low elements rope course, swimming, tubing, zip

FAMILY Y SUMMER DAY CAMP
June - August
Children who have just completed K-5th are eligible
to attend camp. Camp runs Monday through Friday
for the whole entire summer! Kids can participate for
a day, a week, or all summer long. Kids enjoy activities at the Y including crafts, sports, and various
games. Kids also enjoy field trips to local parks and
attractions at least twice a week!

Education/Enrichment
ALBERT LEA AREA SCHOOLS TARGETED SERVICES
Targeted Services is a program available to students who meet state criteria. It is designed to offer additional
learning opportunities after school and in the summer for students who are below grade level in reading and/or
math skills. Programs exist in each of the four elementary buildings and at Southwest Middle School, depending
on teachers’ schedules and availability to offer a program. Most are after school, but they could be held before
school. Teachers usually teach this program in their own classrooms to their own grade levels. Programs
include learning time for reading and math, recreation time, a nutritious snack, and an enrichment activity.
Parents must enroll their students and arrange transportation home at the end of the after school programs.

BEFORE SCHOOL CHOIRS:
If your child is interested in this program, please have them check with their elementary teacher to find out the details for
their school.
READING CLUBS:
Reading clubs meet before, after, or during school. If you child is interested in joining this program, please have them
check with their elementary teacher to find out if their school offers this opportunity.
MATH MASTERS:
5th and 6th grade team members are chosen by teachers based on math skills and talent.
The regional competition in Austin follows this format for both 5th and 6th graders:
 Individual Warm-up Fact Drill (75 problems; 5 min.; no calculators)
4 Individual Problem Solving Rounds (8 problems in each 10 min. round; calculators allowed)
 3 Team Problem Solving Rounds (10 problems in each 15 min. round; calculators allowed)
Awards are presented to winning students in each component of the competition. Each participating team member receives a participation award and a Math Masters t-shirt.
YOUNG AUTHORS, YOUNG ARTISTS CONFERENCE:
In Albert Lea, 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students from each building are chosen by teachers to attend this annual event held
in Rochester, MN, in May. Approximately 800 students gather in Rochester to learn from and work with authors, poets,
illustrators, artists, journalists, book crafters, and others in sessions that expose students to the art and joy of writing and
creating. A separate grade 7-8 conference is also held that selected students attend.
SPELLING BEE:
A Classroom Spelling Bee competition is held in English classrooms in 5th through 8th grades in Albert Lea schools to decide who will attend the District Spelling Bee held at Southwest Middle School. At the District Bee, 5th through 8th grade
students compete head-to-head to win 1st place through 4th place and the opportunity to compete in the Regional Spelling
Bee Competition in Rochester, MN, in February.
SCIENCE FAIR:
Approximately 200 students in 3rd through 6th grade decide to create a science project to present before volunteer judges
at the Northbridge Mall in Albert Lea. Most students work on a science fair-like project for the classroom; expanding it into
a Science Fair project is their own choice. Students may work individually or in teams. St. Theodore Catholic School also
chooses to participate in this event. The public and parents are encouraged to attend this fun event, usually held on a
Saturday in March.
YMCA Chess Club: Weekly afterschool chess club for Middle School students co-sponsored by the Albert Lea Family Y.
Students learn the fundamentals of chess and strengthen their chess skills. Will be held on Tuesdays after school in the
media center. No charge to participate. Call the Y: 507-373-8228.

MN AVIATION, INC. PRIVATE PILOT GROUND SCHOOL/FLIGHT LAB
The course will offers the student an inside look into aviation to include topics such as aerodynamics, aircraft
systems, weather, navigation, aero-medical factors, and many more exciting topics which will lead towards
passing the FAA Private Pilot Written exam. This course could count towards college credit in the future and the
information may be used anywhere. The flight lab portion is billed hourly and would include an instructor and
aircraft. Those at least 16 years of age can work towards their student certificate.

MN AVIATION, INC. PROFESSIONAL COMMERCIAL PILOT CAREER
CLASSROOM/FLIGHT LAB
This course is a vocational program designed to help a person become a commercial pilot in only four months.
Upon graduation, you will be licensed with a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Commercial Pilot certificate.
With this certificate you will be able to be employed flying aircraft for aerial photography, scenic rides, pipeline
patrol, commuter airline, national and major airline, and many other exciting careers as a pilot. With additional
training you may also become FAA Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) which allows you to teach others how to fly.
The course is five days a week, 8am to 5pm. Our full time staff of FAA CFI’s will guide you through the program
which consists of the basics of how an airplane flies, flight planning, weather theory, aerodynamics, flight physiology, navigation, federal regulations, aircraft systems, aircraft performance and decision making skills related to
aviation.
Upon graduation you will have a Commercial Pilot certificate with single engine and multi-engine ratings along
with an instrument rating. These courses do count as credit for college courses with our college partner Utah
Valley University as part of their Aviation Bachelors degree. Billing is hourly for the instructor and aircraft as
necessary. Upon completion of the program, the applicant must be at least 18 years of age, be a USA citizen or
approved by the TSA, and possesses at least an FAA third class medical.

need of encouragement and support. Mentors are
caring adults who volunteer to meet with their
“mentees” 2-4 times per month for educational, recreational, and social activities. Mentors and mentees
commit to being in the program for a minimum of
one year and may start at any time during the year.

FREEBORN CO. CLOVERBUD PROGRAM
4-H’ers in K-2nd grade. Cloverbuds meet every
other month around the county to do fun 4-H projects. You must belong to a traditional 4-H club to
become a 4-H Cloverbud. The activities that we will
do are just for Cloverbuds. The older 4-H members
will come and help out at these events.

Boy Scout programs in Freeborn County
The Boy Scouts of America partners with many organizations throughout Freeborn County to deliver comprehensive youth development. Meeting days and times vary from site to site. Below is a brief overview of
each program, age/gender requirements, and contacts for local leaders. Membership is $16/year; however,
there are some other costs such as hand books, campouts, transportation, and uniforms. The GREAT news
is that 80% of all our youth pay for everything they need through the annual popcorn sale.

Youth Drop-In Center
Pioneers teaches children about God’s creation and
our role in it; imparts useful skills for living in God’s
world; and provides nurturing and training in God’s
Word so that boys and girls remain faithful to the
Lord and faithfully server Him throughout their
lives.

During the school year, Lutheran Pioneers features
such events as a cookout, a hayride, sledding,
swimming and open gym, and a pine car derby.
One to two meetings per month are held on
Thursday nights at 6:30 p.m. Meeting topics
include the natural world, citizenship, camping
skills, and safety. Children kindergarten thru
6th grade are welcome to attend. Due to
generous grants from donors, the Pioneers youth
program is provided FREE of charge.

Nutritional Tips & Snacks you can make at home!
Tips to get kids to eat healthy foods!
1. Be a healthy role model. If you want your child to eat his/her broccoli, you better be eating yours.
2. Get them involved in food decisions and preparations. There are all kinds of things you can do to have your
kids help anywhere in the food process.
3. Present the MyPlate. This is the new food model for healthy eating. It encourages the whole family to make
half the plate fruits and veggies and is an easy-to-understand visual for kids.
4. Redefine trying. Small bites, touching it, smelling it or describing the new food can all be forms of trying. Also
remember it can often take many times of trying a new food before people decide if they like it or not (even for
adults).
5. Remember, you can’t make kids like a food. You can offer it and talk positive about it, but if they don’t like it
at that time, that is OK. Emphasize this view as just that they don’t like it yet. This encourages them to know,
just like themselves, that their tastes will change and grow, and it keeps the doors open for trying the food again
in the future.

with you that can help your kids to love their fruits
and veggies!
Potato Person
Decorate half a baked potato. Use
sliced cherry tomatoes, peas, and
low-fat cheese on the potato to
make funny faces!
Bugs on a log
Use celery, cucumber, or carrot sticks
as the log and add peanut butter.
Top with dried fruit such as raisins,
cranberries, or cherries, depending
on what bugs you want!
Fruity Peanut Butterfly
Start with carrot sticks or celery for the
body. Attach wings made of thinly
sliced apples with peanut butter and
decorate with halved grapes or dried
fruit!
Delicious Dippers
Children love to dip their foods.
Whip up a quick dip for veggies with
yogurt and seasonings such as herbs

The Albert Lea Figure Skating Club holds lessons,
taught by skating professionals, Mondays and
Wednesday at the City Arena with extra practice time
available. Members take group, semi-private, or
private lessons to learn basic skills and freestyle
(more advanced) skills. They also have opportunities
to compete at regional events. The season runs
September through March, ending with the annual
show in March.
Our club’s goal is to provide a skating environment
that fosters both recreational and competitive skating. We have a broad membership and we strive to
meet the needs of each skater.
KARATE
Classes are held on Monday evenings in our Albert Lea
dojang at 4:30 and 5:30; Thursday evenings at 4:30
and 5:30. Beginner through Black Belt; age 6 and beyond. Belt color and age are integrated in our classes.
Self defense from various grabs and holds are taught,
as well as defense of kicks and strikes. American sport
karate sparring is utilized for those who wish to do so.
Women’s rape prevention and self defense classes are
also taught here. Private lessons are available by
appointment.
The ALFSC is a non-profit, educational organization.
Our members also belong to the United States Figure
Skating Association.
Our club offers lessons for students in preschool
through high school. We have a Tiny Tots program
for children age 3 ½ to 5. Older students enjoy private lessons and special performance opportunities.

Builders Club is designed to promote students of all

community. Past activities have included youth
drive events, United Way helpers, and Adopt-AGrandparent Program with St. John’s Lutheran
