Our featured artist this year is Barb Butler, who always delights us with her gorgeous florals and street scenes. A special treat for us this year is Barb’s introduction of her latest work portraying a Tuscan influence. Mark us on your calendar for Friday, September 27 and look for additional information on this event coming up on our website, Facebook page, and local media. Another Art & Garden Tour Success A simple thank you to the valiant gardeners who struggled with many aspects of nature to provide interesting and beautiful gardens for the 2013 Art and Garden tour is insufficient. The gardens were all different and provided wonderful examples of landscaping with slopes, raised beds, and beautiful plants. Above and beyond expectations, the gardeners were available talking freely of their adventures with their yards and gardens. Also, our artists cannot be forgotten. We thank them sincerely as they illustrate and complement nature in their works. The weather threatened, but held out for a great tour. Finally, thanks to all the visitors. We know that they were not disappointed. We appreciate Thrivent Financial for their generous grant, Albert Lea Seed House for the gardener gift certificates and JenSales for the printing of our tickets. President’s Letter We are entering the second half of 2013 and can look back at the last six months with pride! The Gallery Shows and events have been spectacular! Each of the open houses was well planned and well attended. Many attendees stepped into the Albert Lea Art Center for the first time and I have no doubt that they will return. Celebrating the Lakes of Freeborn County Exhibit I don’t consider myself an artist, but I had the opportunity to display in three shows (All Member Show, Family Heirlooms, & Celebrating the Lakes) this year. My displays included some glass work, belt buckles, bells, and fishing lures. You may have something you don’t consider “art”, but might fit in nicely to a Gallery Show. There are many opportunities for you to participate in shows and events at the Albert Lea Art Center. I hope you will take advantage of that opportunity. Remember: The board of directors, the volunteers and the community all working together make the Albert Lea Art Center great!! Tom Ferleman President, Albert Lea Art Center Board of Directors Thank You Volunteers, Donors & Members! Student Art Show Because we didn’t mail out a full newsletter in the spring, we didn’t get a chance to formerly thank the hardworking art teachers and very talented students at our local schools who put in a lot of time and effort for this year’s Student Art Show. The teacher’s who participated in the March 17 through April 5 show included: Mark Blong -Sibley Elementary Jessica Bremer - Halvorson Elementary & Alternative School Robin Brown & Raissa Byer - Albert Lea High School Andrea Harves - Hawthorne Elementary School Kimberly Meirose Southwest Middle School and Cammie Tennis - Lakeview Elementary School Monetary Donations to the Art Center Claire & Ruth Vermedahl - Events Joyce Kogel - General Funds Thank You! Your support is so important to us! The AOB Palette A s most of you probably know, Broadway Avenue in Albert Lea is undergoing massive reconstruction and access to the front door of many businesses is being hampered. Because of the difficulty for our customers, staff, and artists to access the Art Center location from any available parking lot, the board voted to allow the AOB shop to move to a temporary location in Prairie Winds Coffee Shop. Kurt Foley offered us the solution to our upcoming situation by renting us a space for the retail sales of our art and supplies within his coffee shop. The move took place a few weekends ago and went very smoothly and quickly. It occurred with the help and supervision of Tom Mullen, Marty Shepard, Harlan Bang, my daughter, Marci, and my son, Mick, pitching in. Janelle and her Sentence to Serve crew were a great help to make the move go smoothly with minor disruption to coffee shop customers or staff - a big Thank You to her. Every piece was moved without a scratch or mark, from fixtures to equipment, and most importantly, no damage to any of the artwork. We are now set up and feeling comfortably “moved in” and are looking forward to meeting many new faces as we see the foot traffic created by customers coming from the parking just outside the back door. The AOB store will have an attendant on duty from 10AM to 2 PM Monday thru Saturday each week, starting July 1 thru August 31. Again, I want to thank each of you who volunteered to help with the move and thank you to those who gave me support and encouragement in this quest to deal with Streetscape 2013. Stop in and shop, drink coffee, or just chat about Art Center news….someone will be here to greet you.
