Refurbishments of Buildings
The architects are almost there in regard to presenting the design of the
refurbishment of the Folly and Kilbride wings. The main Quad may also be
reconfigured and resurfaced. A Traffic Consultant has been engaged to
give input into our development application to the Council. A camera will
be put up on the front gate so that the traffic coming along Aeolia Lane
down to the back of the Ritz can be monitored. As we want to change the
entrance to Brigidine, then knowing the volume of traffic is very
important. If you know the big wall covered with vines that has the
Brigidine shield on it at the entrance to the school.........it will be knocked
down and the space will become a pedestrian entry for the girls. The stairs
on the side of Kilbride will be knocked down as will a 1950's addition to a
room we call Tullow. This will make the Kilbride courtyard much bigger and
it will be dug out so that it meets level with what is now the canteen
quad. There will be a new canteen and bathrooms and a whole new area
for the girls to gather and sit that flows in from the Kilbride courtyard. The
Library will be completely refurbished and a lift put in from the canteen
area to the top of Tully.
It will be a challenge to be running the school while all this work is
happening so it will have to be done in stages. I had had hopes that
building could start at the end of this year, however we have not yet put
the DA into Randwick Council.
Brigidine this last fortnight
This is a massive newsletter because the girls have been involved in so
many sporting competitions and excursions.
Don't forget your Musical tickets...and also Professor Ian Hickie at
Marcellin on Thursday 16th June. That date clashes with one of the nights
for Legally Blonde but there are also performances on Friday and Saturday
nights.

POLICE Warning – Child Safety
The College has been notified of an App parents need to be aware. There is an app young children
are using called "Talking Angela", created by a company called "Outfit 7 Limited". The app was
designed for young children to dress up their cat "Angela". Children can also take a video of
themselves on this app and upload it for their "friends" to view. The app however is being used by
Child Sex Offenders who can access their accounts and cameras and view the young kids using this
site. The site has many bad reviews and the Police are advising schools to warn parents about this
app. This app has been around for a while, but is still available for young children.
Another recent concern for older students, is that Child Sex Offenders are posing as Photographers
on sites such as Facebook & Instagram and asking to photograph young girls and boys. Many of
these offenders claim to be "casting agents", which entices the girls/boys into thinking they are
going to be the next big model. Please be wary of what the girls are doing online and if they are
chatting to people you may not know.
Pupil Free Day – 14th June 2016
The Term 2 staff professional development day will be held on Tuesday 14th June 2016. This is a
pupil free day for students. No supervision will be provided on this day.
Parent Teacher Interviews Years 7 – 10
Parent/Teacher Interviews for Years 7-10 will be held on Thursday 30th June from 8:40 – 6:30pm and
Friday 1st July from 8:40 – 1pm in Cullen Hall. These are pupil free days.
To maximise parent access to interviews, an appointment schedule will operate over the two days.
Parents can make appointments with teachers via our SENTRAL Parent Portal online booking
system. Bookings will be open Thursday the 16th of June at 10am until Friday the 24th of June at
4pm.
CyberSmart Resources
Social Media. Two words that have completely changed how we socialise, how we communicate and
how we share our photos. Instagram, Facebook, Twitter – the list goes on and on. Below are some
apps or websites that can help you, help your daughter think about what she is posting, when and
why she is posting it.
Reword - The tool that helps prevent online abusive behaviour, identifying insulting statements in
real time. What makes reword so unique is the red line. Similar to a spell checker, the line intuitively
goes through insulting statements, interrupting impulsive behaviour and prompting you to
reconsider your words before you post. The tool aims to encourage a change in the way people
communicate online, and gives people a chance to reword what they say.

ImageUp By Telethon Kids Institute - For those with multiple social media accounts and who love to
share images with the world, how do you keep track of what’s been posted, liked or
tweeted? ImageUp is an all-in-one app that allows you to post to Instagram, Twitter and Facebook
at the push of a button, to track your likes and retweets, and to keep you Cyber Savvy about image
sharing. Each time you post, you’ll be shown a short video so you can pause for thought, and decide
if you really want to post the image.
Pleaserobme – Raises awareness about oversharing on Social Media by highlighting what can
happen when you constantly share your location with others.
The website is not designed to have someone rob you but does highlight the dangers of publicly
sharing your location. The website outlines what it does below:
"The danger is publicly telling people where you are. This is because it leaves one place you're
definitely not... home. So here we are; on one end we're leaving lights on when we're going on a
holiday, and on the other we're telling everybody on the Internet we're not home. It gets even worse
if you have 'friends' who want to colonize your house. That means they have to enter your address, to
tell everyone where they are. Your address… on the Internet… Now you know what to do when
people reach for their phone as soon as they enter your home. STOP THEM”

2016 WINTER SLEEP OUT
This year’s Winter Sleep Out started out as an idea at the 2015 Brigidine Leaders Day. It was seen as
a chance for Brigidine Schools to come together for a worthy cause and help out Sydney’s homeless.
After this first meeting Social Justice Leaders from both Brigidine College Randwick and Brigidine
College St Ives kept in touch and decided to hold this year’s event at the St Ives campus.
The participating students gathered on Friday night for the cause with both schools coming together
with that unique Brigidine spirit. After all the introductions were done the girls played a high stakes
game of trivia and enjoyed an excellent sausage sizzle put on by the teachers of Brigidine St Ives.
Following this a teacher and two ex-students from Key College (Redfern Campus) spoke. Key College
is a Youth Off The Streets (YOTS) program whereby primary and high schools are set up around
Sydney specifically for homeless youth. These speeches gave the girls an insight into the lives of the
homeless and the great work that the Key Colleges do.
We finished up with breakfast with girls raising over $500 for YOTS. Quite a success, especially after
seeing the end results of their donations in the speeches from the previous night.
Next year, headed by this year’s Year 11 Social Justice Representatives, we hope to raise even more
money and are looking forward to working again with Brigidine St Ives.

ENGLISH DEPARTMENT NEWS
What Matters?
I want to extend my congratulations to the students who contributed to the Whitlam ‘What Matters’
Competition. These students took time out of their already busy day to voice their investment in a
fair world. These entries showcased a compassion and wisdom beyond their years. The snippets
below express their responses to the question ‘what matters?’
“Childhood. Swings, laughter,
smeared faces, mud pies. A great
potential, the bottom rung of a
ladder, a ladder to the stars, the
deep oceans, the complexities of
the human race contained in a
being so tiny and vulnerable.”
“Kindness. It isn’t something that should be publicised about. It shouldn’t be something someone
must earn from you. Kindness should be given at every observable chance.”
‘To choose not to conform is courageous. It’s difficult, and it’s scary. Despite this, imagine all the
things you could have achieved if you weren’t so busy worrying about what other people were
doing, or what another person would think about you.’
“Equal pay. When I was younger I wanted to be the tooth fairy. Then when I got a little bit older an
astronaut, a little bit older a singer/actress and now I don’t know. The only thing I know
concerning my future career is that I will be payed less than a male just because I am a female.”
“Courage. An ordinary person just taking a bus home sparked a revolution, the dawn for an equal
world. Rosa Parks had no idea what she was walking into, the lives she changed, the people she
helped. Changing the world may seems like a far stretch for just one person, but nobody said it
was impossible. I implore you to do the impossible and take action. “
“As the famous tennis player Martina Navratilova once said: “Labels are for filing. Labels are for
clothing. Labels are not for people. The world will be a better place if society will stop labelling and
belittling people based on their culture, and if we start to believe that they are not defined by
these harsh labels that society has given to us. In a world where people are not discriminated by
the colour of their skin and their culture, children and adults can freely be whoever they want to be
without being judged – This is what matters. “
“The freedom to be imperfect. As we remain in the comfort of what we know, we silence ourselves
in the presence of judgement. When we reach the point where voices and ideas are declined
because of the fear of being ‘different’, we do not move forward. Ideas stop being original and our
minds are stuck in this box that is impossibly small and is based on unrealistic standards. “

MOCK TRIAL NEWS – BRIGIDINE COLLEGE VS ST ANDREW’S CATHEDRAL
Our second trial for the year was held last Wednesday. Our Mock Trial team performed most
professionally in the trial against St Andrew’s the final score being a difference of only 7 points with
St Andrew’s the winners. Brigidine represented the defence in a civil case concerning breach of
contract.

VISUAL ART DEPARTMENT NEWS
YR 11 PHOTOGRAPHY – COCKATOO ISLAND
Year 11 Photography went to Cockatoo Island last week to take photos and see the Biennale. The
day required an early start to catch the 6:45 ferry from Circular Quay. The shivering girls took some
great photos of the early morning sunshine on the harbour as we went under the harbour bridge.
The day was sunny and windy but armed with cameras, both digital and film, the girls explored one
of Sydney’s most historic sites. Mr MacLochlainn, Ms Brennan and Ms Norsa held down the base
camp - strategically located in the café’s sunny courtyard. The day was a great success!

YEAR 9 ART EXCURSION TO THE CHINESE GARDENS AND THE ART GALLERY OF NSW
Year 9 Art went on an excursion to the Chinese Gardens and the Art Gallery of NSW on the 6th of
May. In Term Two this year both Year 9 art classes are learning about eastern and western
landscape painting. We all took a trip to the Chinese gardens to help us understand the landscape
that we could put into our scroll long paintings. We all spent the morning sketching at the beautiful
gardens and had a great time as it was a very sunny autumn day. Then we made our way to the art
gallery and we ate our lunch at a park near the art gallery. It was a very fun day as we got to see the
city itself and all the different art styles at the art gallery after lunch. We saw many different types
and styles of landscape paintings from different eras. It was just such a pleasant day as we learnt a
lot but we also had a lot of fun with our friends and were able to explore.

Congratulations to all the girls in the cross country team who competed at the Championships at
Homebush with solid results. All girls ran exceptionally well and managed to complete the course in

CGSSSA BASKETBALL 2016
The Senior CGSSSA Basketball Competition was held on Wednesday, 11th May 2016 at Menai Indoor
Sports Centre. The team played 5 round games and finished equal second in their pool.
Unfortunately the girls didn’t progress through to the semis. A big thank you to the girls for the
great sportsmanship and teamwork and a special thank you to the Year 12 girls for their dedication
to the school and the basketball team.
Our Juniors and Inters played the following week at Bankstown Basketball Stadium. The Inters
played extremely well throughout the day but unfortunately just missed out on making it to the
Semi-finals. The Juniors were undefeated in their Pool, easily winning their Semi-finals against St.
Clare’s team! They then put in a brilliant and gallant effort in the finals only to lose narrowly to
Monte! A fabulous effort girls!
Congratulations to all the girls; they showed great sportsmanship and represented Brigidine with
pride and enthusiasm.

‘First Lego League’ robotics competition at the end of the year.

Brigidine College STEM students attend UNSW Engineering's High School
Information Day
UNSW Engineering’s High School Information Day was on again on Thursday 18th May. The day was
designed to give senior high school students the opportunity to sample several fields of engineering
through interesting and stimulating hands-on activities.
Six of our senior Brigidine students with cross over interests in Design & Technology and Physics
attended the day and experienced what life was like in the ever expanding world of the Engineering
department of UNSW. By doing so, students gained a better understanding of how industry and
education can work together to solve problems and was a great way to prepare them for Brigidine’s
new STEM project called ‘Powering Change’.
Throughout the day the students had the opportunity to speak to the academic staff and students and
gained a deeper understanding of the degrees on offer and life on campus at UNSW, as well as seeing
some of our awesome student projects.
CAREERS NEWS
Tertiary Institutions Presentations for Year 12 at BCR
Over the past term, Year 12 students have had the opportunity to attend lunchtime
presentations and gain invaluable information from a number of tertiary institutions. These
included University of NSW, Notre Dame, Australian Catholic University, Engineering and
Business Cadetships with UBS, Sydney University and Macleay College. The last presentation
for the term will be from UTS on the 23rd June.
Year 12 Careers Interviews
Many Year 12 students have already made an appointment to discuss their career choices
with me. If your daughter is yet to do this, please encourage her to make an appointment
during her study period. Parents are also welcome to attend.
HSC and Careers Expo at Moore Park, 2-5 June 2016
Students are encouraged to attend this event being held this weekend. Almost every
tertiary institution will be exhibiting at the expo. Also there are many seminars held during
the 4 days including HSC subject seminars, gap year information, UAC Tertiary application
