The Circuit
Write of Way, by Suesan Way
Well we are quickly approaching Labour Day weekend, once
again marking the end of summer and the fast approaching
harsh winter season with it’s blustering winds, blizzards, hail
the size of California oranges and a mixture of ice, slush and
snow perpetually going in over the edge of one’s boots when
a little mound of snow turns out to be as deep as an abyss to
the center of the earth... OH WAIT, that is winter at home
in Canada – I forgot – this is going to be winter in Southern
California with its gentle changing weather and an everlasting wish for a rainy season (I can barely wait).
In Southern California Porsches are not hidden away between November and May. Here they are free to roam the
highways and byways with their front ends facing the wind
as they were intended to live, free of cold garages and spending the winter up on freezing concrete blocks. Not in SoCal.
We drive all year round and, most days with the top down if
so inclined. Here we can do winter tours and late fall driving
events and not worry that 3 feet of fresh snow might land on
the roof.
In that vain – Grand Prix Region is gearing up for a couple
of fall/winter events. We are planning photo rally with the
Orange Coast Region on October 24th– this is a fun kind
of rally and there are cash prizes and lunch time bragging
rights included. Grand Prix has not done anything like this
for years and it is sure to be a fun day for everyone. For more
information see the ad in this Circuit.
In early October we are having our fall Day Away from
Work (a Grand Prix tradition) at Streets of Willow on Monday the 4th. This is a DE and Zone 8 Autocross – please see
the flyer in this issue of the Circuit.
At the end of November we are doing a pre-turkey/football
day driving event at the Pomona Fairplex road course. We
are joining up again with the San Gabriel Valley Region on
November 20th & 21st. There will be an autocross on the
Saturday and a Drivers Ed on Sunday.
Both of these upcoming track days are entry level events and
instructors are assigned to all novice drivers. The intent is to
give drivers the opportunity to develop safe car control skills
in a safe environment. If this is new to you, an instructor
and other instruction will be provided.
6
Our breakfast meetings continue to
draw 85 plus people at Frisco’s in Long
Beach each month – there are door
prizes and cash prizes and everyone is
eligible to win whether you buy breakfast or not. It is a good opportunity to
meet other Porsche enthusiasts and see some beautiful cars.
So come out and get acquainted with some great people and
gorgeous cars.
We are starting to plan our annual holiday party and silent
auction which will be on December 4th at the Long Beach
Yacht Club. Ticket costs will be subsidized by the region
and we are hoping to have a record breaking crowd to help
celebrate the season. Please hold the date and watch for more
information in the October Circuit.
Please be sure to send your thoughts and ideas about the club
to me. Don’t be shy. We are always looking for new thoughts
and suggestions.
September 2010
Skip Carter
We have two new advertisers
in the September Circuit. Both
companies are owned by Grand Prix Region members, and
both could be of value to us, now or in the future. First is
Linda Nolasco's Orange Coast Mortgage. OCM has been
around since 1985 and know a little bit about financing
property. They can help with all aspects of residential, apartment, commercial or land financing loans. They also buy
and sell trust deeds, offer foreclosure services and do property management. Sooner or late you could likely use one or
more of these services.
Our second new advertiser is Mike Mulligan's Mullligan
Racing Development. Besides serving as the GPX Chief
Driving Instructor and a PCA Club Racing Scruitineer,
Mike runs a small shop in Vista (north San Diego County).
MRD offers a full range of service, repair, racing development and support. They have built several 944 Spec racers
for members, bur offer service to a wide variety of Porsche
and other vehicles (Alfas and older Ferrari's are not strangers
to this shop).
On the Cover...
It is not difficult to spot outstanding examples of the Porsche
automobile at our monthly Breakfast Club meetings. Several
appear in this cover photo by Jimmie Mitchell. Up front is the
beautiful GR3RS brought by Lisa Taylor and Tom Ridings
(Lisa and Tom are just on the right side of the photo).
What I didn't see is how they fit thier two large Golden
Retrievers in the RS.
Quite a few GPX members were in Monterey for the Historics this month. We have a lot of great photos we'll get in
next month's Circuit. We'll also cover our recent trip to the
new Mullin Museum. It has only been open since May, but
we know three PCA regions who have already had tours to
this Oxnard jewel, and we know why. This is probably the
best private automobile collection I have ever seen. Many
thanks to Marty Goldsmith for keeping tabs on these things
and setting up the tour for us.
Our Day Away from Work DE/Autocross on Monday,
October 4 has a new twist from previous events; we are
using MotorsportReg.com for online registration instead of
everyone filling out a registration form and mailing it in.
You still need to mail in a check (credit card payment probably coming next year), but it is saving a lot of work for our
registrar (who has enough on her plate already). The people
at MotorsportReg have spent hours on the phone helping
us figure out the process. It's been fairly painless and we are
already reaping the benefits.
On a sad note, one of our driving instructors, Bob "Coolhand"
Rossito, passed away a few days
ago. Bob is from the Cal Inland
region, and just one of the nicest
guys I'd ever met.

RACING AT POMONA
Story AND photos by Marty Goldsmith
In the 1950s, the venue we now call Fairplex was called the LA County Fairgrounds, but
to auto buffs it was simply Pomona. I don't know when the track was first laid out on the
huge parking lot at the north end of the property, but the first weekend sports car race
meet was conducted in June 1956. It was sponsored by the California Sports Car Club,
the large independent race club. Among the drivers were Ken Miles (Porsche Spyder),
Richie Ginther (Porsche Spyder), Bill Murphy (Kurtis-Buick), Chuck Daigh (TroutmanBarnes), John von Neumann, Harrison Evans, Bob Drake (Ferraris), Bill Krause, and
Jerry Austin (D-Jaguars).
2
3
The Cal Club went on to sponsor seven more weekends in the 50s, all club races. The biggest sports car event at Pomona was the Examiner Grand Prix, in March 1959. While the
Cal Club was not the sponsor, it provided all the workers. Another unusual event was the
Cal Club's 6-hour enduro in November 1958. It started at 2PM on Saturday and finished
at 8PM after about three hours running on headlights. Ken Miles did not drive his customary Spyder in the event, but won with Carlyle Blackwell in a Jaguar D-type. The next
day he reverted to form, however, winning the main event in the Porsche.
9
The only unusual visual feature of the track was the tunnel (actually an overpass to
permit entry to the infield) shown below (and which we will be using for our November
20-21 2-day Performance Driving event). Other than that, is was a pretty flat course set
off by hay bales. Production cars frequently got in difficulty in some corners, and even
the big dogs got decorated with hay now and again. MG's seem to have a lot of trouble at
many meets staying right side up, and Pomona was no exception (photo 10). Corvettes
and Jaguars often spun, but stayed upright (photos 3, 8 & 7). After a slippery dance, even
a big Ferrari might eat some hay (photo 9). These photos were taken in the July '57 event.
Races then always employed a standing start (photo 11) and it could get quite exciting
for the starter when someone in an up-front row killed his engine. You can ask me how I
know! John von Neumann won the big bore race whose start is shown. Ken Miles had just
won the small bore (under 1500cc) race.
Speaking of Ken Miles, here he is shown emerging from the overpass (photo 5) during the
October 57 meet. While cars slid this way and that on occasion, it was really a pretty safe
track, with almost nothing solid to hit. Safety was much more casual in those days - roll
bars were not required, most cars were open, the helmets were primitive, seat belts were
mostly surplus Air Force, and your driving suit was whatever clothes you were comfortable in.
5
But all life seemed to be simpler in the 50s.

GPX Tour to Mammoth
& the Eastern Sierra — Sep 11-13
If you have never visited the Eastern Sierra, you have missed a very special place. If you have always driven there without leaving Highway 395, you have missed a lot of special places! This tour will leave Long Beach and follow freeways
through the Cajon Pass. and up 395, pausing at Kramer's Junction for refreshment. The first sightseeing stop will be the
old mining town of Randsberg. After that we cross a patch of desert to visit Red Rock Canyon State Park. Passing by
some of the volcanic country near Little Lake, we press on to lunch at Olancha.
We may detour to Keeler, a picturesque mining community on our way to Lone Pine and Manzanar. From there we will
enjoy the spectacular Owens Valley scenery on our way to Mammoth Lakes. This famous mountain resort town has all
the amenities. We have a block of rooms reserved at the Quality Inn, right on Main Street in the middle of town.
We will have group dinners (locations TBD) on Saturday and Sunday nights. On Sunday, we have planned a tour to
include the famous Mono Lake, a look at Tioga Pass, and perhaps a side trip to the preserved ghost town of Bodie.
Monday options: You can leave early or stay for the Mammoth Mountain Gondola to the top of the peak for a spectacular view over the Minarets and San Joaquin River Canyon or go to Mammoth Crest for a flat, but spectacular walk along
the ridge, and continue to Red's Meadow and the Devil's Postpile. You cannot run out of things to do at Mammoth!
To participate, do two things. First call the Quality Inn (760) 934-5114 and ask for the GPX Porsche Club special rate $99 per night. Then let Marty Goldsmith know that you have signed up (562) 494-6350 or [email protected] so
he can keep you up to date on details. Sign up early - that weekend is a busy one in Mammoth!

The Circuit
2010 ALMS Laguna Seca
Story and photos by Greg White
Shannon and I drove up to Monterey on Thursday,
a nice drive with stops along the way. We drove up
Interstate-5 and across Highway 146, stopping at the
James Dean memorial. We picked up our tickets at
Will Call, checked into our hotel, then went to dinner
and cruised scenic Cannery Row.
The next morning we arrived at the track for the
first practice session. At the Porscheplatz we were
warmly greeted and given a schedule of events for
the weekend. We signed up for Friday's Track Tour,
and by noon there were almost 100 cars parked in
the Platz. There was a steady stream of visitors from
Porsche AG, Flying Lizard drivers, Porsche Motorsports, Mobil 1, Yokohama, Michlein, PCA , Porsche
of Monterey and more. In the Paddock there were
several Panameras and a Boxster Spyder, along with
a new GT-3. Practices were fast and furious with few
yellow flags, so the cars got the maximum time on the
track to prepare their race. As the day went on, the
paddock grew with everything from early 356s to a 2
week old GT-3. That evening found us at the local EL
Toritio where we dined at a table next to Patrick Long
and Jan Bergmeister. We spent a little time talking to
them and ended the evening wishing them good luck.
Saturday dawned with clear skies and cool temps. We
arrived bright and early, enjoying a track breakfast of
burritios and coffee (I had a pepsi). There was another
parade of visitors at the Platz: Zone 7 Rep Sharon Nidel and others. Officals from Porsche AG and Motorsports, talked about what to expect from Porsche, the
Hybrid GT-3RSR, the 918 and future racing involvement from Porsche. There was a question and answer
period and give aways - I won an Mobil 1 oil storage
bag. One couple won a set of tires. We were given a
safety briefing for the track tour and soon we were
lined up ready to go.
Our group of Porsches went onto the track with a
pace car and a local motor officer. As they circled the
track the 2nd time, the officer decided to slow the
group down (some drivers were having way too good
of a time). But, as we headed toward Turn 6 we found
ourselves with no pace car or police escort, so the
pace became fairly spirited. The high points were the
Corkscrew, and turns 2 and 11, All too soon we were
waved off the track and back to the Platz, only a few
yellow flags were waved at the more spirited drivers.

The race soon started. With cool temps and cooler
tires, we had a few yellow flags and spins in the
usual places (turns 2, 4, 5 and down the Corkscrew
to turn 11). One of the most spectular was when
a GTC car flipped and ended up in turn 4. Some
of the best passing happened at the corkscrew with
everyone from the #45 Flying Lizard car passing in
the dirt down the hill, to the Patron Acura doing the
same thing. The last hour, like last year, was one of
the most exciting we have seen.
The pit stops were crucial. In fact, they determined
the lead car the last hour of the race. The Muscle
Milk Spyder had a lengthy pit stop that knocked it
out of first. With that, the LMP Patron Acura took
the lead after the Mazda had a mechinal failure. The
#92 BMW lost its lead to the #45 car with 2 laps to
go. On the restart, going into turn 11, Long held off
the rest of the way to the checkered flag, out dragging the BMW. Flying Lizard held on to its series
lead with their 44 car taking 4th. In GTC (Porsche
GT3s), # 54 took the flag beating out all the other
Porsches. If this event is any indication, next year's
battle will be even more specutlar. With the mix of
cars (Porsches, BMWs, Corvettes, Jaguars, Ferrais,
Aston Martins, GT-40s) it is the most watched of all
the classes. We have already made our reservations
for 2011.

meeting up with Jennifer, the Flying Lizards media director. She remembered us from several years
ago. We also met up with one of our friends, Dede
Seward, a Zone 7 member who knows everybody
from track officials to team drivers and managers.
We had a very special tour which I can't write about.
But lets just say that we got a look behind the scenes
few will ever have. Pull me aside and I will be glad to
tell you all about it.

Haunted Porsche Tour #2
“Revisiting the Spirits”
Back by popular demand like something returning from the dead, the Haunted
Porsche Tour has risen for a second time.
This Halloween, October 30-31, 2010 the Riverside region PCA will venture into
the unknown and take a tour to the haunted gold rush town of
Virginia City, Nevada.
------------------------------------------Departing the Outpost Café at 8:00am (Intersection of Interstate 15 and US395) we will travel
Hwy 395 most of the route toward our meeting with the spirits at the oldest hotel in Nevada.
The Gold Hill Hotel.
After registering our souls with the management, we will gather in the Great Room for a group
dinner and in the Gold Hill Saloon to plan our survival for the following eve.
Upon awakening on the second day you will be free to visit the many shops, saloons, museums,
and graveyards. Even take a train ride through the old mining district. But……when the sun
starts to set over Gold Hill the goblin parade will commence downtown and soon you must take
refuge back in the hotel where the spirits have conjured up a very scary giant Halloween bash.
Live music, dining, dancing, the other kind of spirits, and the scariest thing of all…. your
Porsche friends. Ghoulish attire is optional.
Surviving the night… you will be free to return home, or visit Reno, or beautiful Lake Tahoe
on the following days.
More information will follow as the date nears, but you are well advised to make your
reservations early and before September 1st.
The Riverside PCA has blocked out the entire hotel. Tell them you’re with the Porsche club.
Some of the larger rooms can be shared with friends. Others with ghosts.

Breakfast
Club Update — August 7
The Circuit
by Peter Ross, photos by Jimmie Mitchell & Skip Carter
For the month of August, those in attendance at the monthly
Breakfast Club were greeted with a huge membership turnout and a parking lot full of Porsches. All in all, it was simply
another great day to own one of the finest cars in the land…
Porsche.
Rick Mills
Jim Lenahan
Several of our members regaled us with stories about the
recent Porsche Parade held in Illinois. Among them were
our current President, Suesan Way and past President, Skip
Carter, who collectively were attending their fifth straight
Porsche Parade together. Next year Parade will be held next
year in Savannah, Georgia, so get ready.
One thing about attending the Breakfast Club meetings is
that you never know what’s in store until you arrive. This
time, Frisco’s was being featured on a Channel 5 KTLA
morning show, and we were invited to come for a free breakfast and be part of the broadcast. They wanted to make our
cars into stars.
Suesan started her presentation by introducing Grand Prix
Region board members and chairs in attendance, which
included Rick Mills, Marty Goldsmith, Greg Schill, Mike
Mulligan, Ron Shanon, Hazel Hofsess, Richard Clewett, Albert Franco, Nick Perdikaris, Jimmie Mitchell, Bob Baddy,
Dave Hockett, Bob & Karen Lewis, Nick Perdikaris, Ron
Shanon, Ron Walecki, Chuck Weaver and Skip Carter. Others in attendance were Bill Newman, a current PCA Member from the Potomac Region, Jack and Ginny Case, who
have been PCA members since 1955 and Mike Moses from
Chicago, who attended high school with Skip in Montebello.
New members Judy and Steve Irvin were in attendance, as
well as, Armand Castillo, the past President of the Orange
Coast Region, John Barone, the President of the San Gabriel
Valley Region, and Alfred Abken of the San Gabriel Valley Region. Others in attendance were John Baskett, Marc

Since 1972, the Long Beach Rescue Mission has opened its
doors to thousands of men, women and children. The mission provides food, clothing, shelter and spiritual guidance
to the homeless and less fortunate people of the community.
The Long Beach Rescue Mission stands dedicated to helping
individuals overcome the homeless cycle. "We achieve long
term goals and make a world of difference in today's society." Fir nore information, go to:
http://www.lbrm.org/who_are.
As the Grand Prix Region Charity Chairs, we would like to start a campaign to collect much-needed new items for the local Long Beach Rescue Mission, including men’s, women’s and children’s
socks, underwear and any related items. In addition, the mission can always use toothbrushes, first
aid supplies, deodorant and related items as well. We will bring a complete listing of their “wish list”
to the next Breakfast Club. Any items you wish to contribute may be brought to the meetings and
at the end of the year, we will present them to the LBRM.
The next time you are out shopping for yourself, please open up your heart and pick up something
to contribute to the Hope Chest we will be preparing for the mission this holiday season.
Hope to see you at Breakfast Club.

Brake Fluid Flush Question
Boxster, Cayman | Brakes
Allan Rosenberg submitted this question in to the PCA
Boxster/Cayman Tech Chair, and got this answer back from
Scott Slauson:
Model:
Boxster-S
Year:
2005
Mileage:
22540
Type of use: Street & Track
On 2005 Boxster S with PSM, PASM, and Sport chrono.
Must car be connected to service computer to flush brake
fluid?
Answer: The car does not have to be connected to a Porsche
tester to bleed the brakes. The tester does offer bleeding
though via the rt front caliper. This allows a quick flush of
the system from that caliper yet you still have to bleed the
other 3 wheels individually. Should you not have a tester
then bleed all 4 manually with a pressure bleeder or with an
assistant to pump the brakes for you.

Stretching a Dollar
by Norma Ann Dawson (with sidekick Suesan Way)
Suesan and I have often pondered about how far the money Grand
Prix Region contributes to the non-profit organizations it sponsors goes.
Despite my fairly decent research skills, until recently, I wasn't able to
uncover anything definitive. Rently I ran across articles about ASUDEC
and Children's Dental Health Clinic, the two organizations GPX sponsors,
that speak directly to that point. Last month this article focused on
CDHC. This month we will discuss ASUDEC, so you get a good idea of
how the money we donate goes towards helping others less fortunate.
ASUDEC, Africas Sustainable Development Council, is a grassroots organization that works at the village level to help communities and farmers
elevate beyond subsistent farming. Beginning in 2009, Gwen Armstrong,
an American sponsored by ASUDEC as one of its two-year volunteers,
has been spearheading to create a regional traveling library for the children and teenagers of Diebougou, Burkina Faso in West Africa. ASUDEC
generously donated a building for the library. While Gwen filled one of
the rooms in the library with handmade bookshelves, there are still very
few books.
The literacy rate in Diebougou is about 12% of the population. This percentage decreases drastically as one moves away from Diebougou. The
library would not only serve students in Diebougou but would travel to
villages 20-40 miles away with help from ASUDEC and its satellite literacy schools. With the aid of ASUDEC, these books could reach children
and students who have never had the opportunity to read. Gwen’s goal is to raise $3,000 or more to purchase books written in
French (the official language of Burkina Faso) and local languages to donate to the library. All donations will be used to purchase books locally
to avoid shipping and handling costs. This will ensure that every dollar
donated will be used to buy books. In response to Gwen’s requests,
local craftsmen gave products to be auctioned off. Those contributions
raised $1300 towards the $3,000 goal.
Without the generosity of organizations like GPX, ASUDEC would not
have been able to sponsor Gwen Armstrong whose efforts, while seemingly minuscule when view in terms of her budget, will have a profound
and lasting impact on the children and teenagers of Burkina Faso.
For more information about ASUDEC, please go to www.asudec.org/

Book Reviews for Porschephiles
by Bruce Herrington, Riverside Region
Porsche: The Engineering Story
by Jeff Daniels (Haynes Publishing, Sparkford, Yeovil, Somerset, UK)
This book is a gem! For those who think of Haynes as the
Pep Boys of publishing, it's an eye opener. High quality
printing, outstanding graphics, and excellent treatment of a
subject, touched on but not fully addressed by other authors,
make this an essential addition to a Porschephile's library.
Some confusion over early model numbers may grate on a
few reader's nerves, but are irrelevant to the great story presented in this book.
Lest some readers be put-off by Engineering in the title, let me assure you that
this book tells a story, and a fascinating
one at that. It begins with an interesting
discussion of how Ferdinand Porsche's
successively important engineering positions, followed by conflicts with boards
of directors, resulted in the unique mix of
engineering talent at core of the establishment of Porsche Design. Along the way,
of course, Porsche designed the first gaselectric hybrid, and was the first (only?)
race driver to win a race in a production car he designed. The Volkswagen
and Type 60 chapter shows new insight
into the motivation for the Volkswagen
concept and of Hitler's rather personal
involvement, and how much analysis was
actually involved in the decisions regarding the car's configuration, engine and suspension.
This could truly be called an eye opening book. It describes
how components were designed for maintainability (at least
some of them) and to minimize production costs. I was
fascinated reading how the 2004 redesign of the fuel pump,
filter and pressure regulator in the tank eliminated the fuel
return line, reduced weight and benefited performance and
fuel economy by minimizing fuel heating. This book is full
of such generally unknown gems of engineering wisdom
which abound at Porsche, AG.
It is easy to understand some of the trade-offs considered,
but others are complex. The interactions between cylinder
metal and displacement, the placement of clutches in frontengined rear-transaxle cars, the influence of engine exterior
dimensions on bore/stroke ratios, and the amazing discus-
22
sion of how battery placement in
928s affected interior noise. Even
trade-offs between exhaust emissions
and fuel economy (strangely these
environmental issues work against
each other) are discussed. Every
Porsche model is discussed, including some interesting models that
didn't make it to production (989,
Typ 1966, etc.). They all have some
intriguing engineering aspects of
which most owners are totally unaware, like a special shape for coil
springs to allow maximum front
suspension travel with minimum
hood height.
The gems of engineering wisdom
presented make this book a truly
fascinating read for anyone with
the least glimmer of interest in
how and why Porsches are built
the way they are. If you like to play
"did you know..." games with your
Porsche friends, this is your book.
While some classic pictures from
Porsche Archives are included, the book contains a wealth of
cutaway/x-ray drawings of whole cars and individual components. There also are many pictures this reviewer had never
seen, like factory models I never new existed, a 924 Turbo
with twin hood scoops and 928 headlights! Stemming from
the British motoring press, this is refreshingly different from
what we Yanks are accustomed. The marvelous x-ray drawing on the dust jacket makes the book well worth keeping on
top of the coffee table stack.
Eighteen chapters from Ferdinand Porsche's youth through
the development of the 997 (Gen 1). Inspiring for the budding engineer/mechanic, fascinating for the owner/driver,
this is indeed one of those special must have books.

Tech Notes from Tony Callas & Tom Prine
(courtesy of Callas Rennsport)
Check Engine Light
Starting in 1996, all automobiles sold in the United States
were mandated by the government to be equipped with On
Board Diagnostics II (OBD-II). OBD-II is the protocol of
the emissions system; however, it should be
considered part of the operating parameters
for the engine because it is part of the Digital
Motor Electronics (DME) control unit.
Much like a scan tool, OBD-II constantly
oversees and interrogates the engine, watching for any irregularity or change in operation
that is impacting the engine’s emissions. Engine cylinder
miss-fires, rich or lean running conditions, cold start operation and fuel tank pressure are just a few of OBD-II oversight responsibilities. Just about any sensor failure or engine
operating system is monitored by OBD-II.
The Check Engine Light (CEL)
is also known
as the Malfunction Indicator
Light (MIL) or
Service Engine
Soon Light. When
illuminated, it
provides a means
of notification to
the driver that
there is a problem
with the engine
management or
emission system.
Reading fault codes can be a tricky and misleading situation
when you do not have the proper
diagnostic tools. An inexpensive
OBD-II fault code reader is easily
obtained from your local automotive
parts store, but it could lead you in
the wrong direction. It is always best
to utilize the factory diagnostic system and a trained technician familiar with you car. Interrogate not just
the engine management system but
all the control units in your vehicle.
Print and retain all the fault codes
The PIWIS tester
in every system for future reference.
(yes, that's a 911R project in the background)
If you see a continuously illuminated CEL, the problem
may be minor and you should be able to safely drive your
car home and then to your place of service, but the problem
should be diagnosed very soon to insure that no damage is
taking place.
If the MIL or CEL is blinking, your OBD-II system has
determined that a possible catalytic convertor damaging
condition exists, and you should not drive your car. Turn the
engine off immediately and have it towed to a service location where the problem can be diagnosed. This would be a
better decision than risking further damage to your emission
control system.
26
The complete automobile
emissions system is designed to
protect the catalytic convertor(s)
because it is what is
responsible for reducing
the exhaust emissions.
The internal combustion engine produces three
main pollutants: CO, HC and NOX. CO (Carbon
Monoxide), gets converted to CO2, which plants
like. HC (Hydrocarbons) gets converted into H2O
(water) — you've seen cars with water dripping from
their tail pipe?. The last pollutant is NOX (Oxides of Nitrogen). These get converted into N2 (Nitrogen), which is what
most of our atmosphere consists of.
Once your problem is repaired, the
technician can utilize what is called
the Mode Six (notated $06) data to
confirm that your vehicle is repaired
properly and a re-occurring check engine light will not be in
your immediate future.

Board Meeting Notes —August 7
Marty Goldsmith, Secretary
Meeting called to order at 11:25 by President Suesan Way. Board members present: Rick Mills, Marty Goldsmith, Greg
Schill, Jimmie Mitchell & Skip Carter.
Also present Jack & Ginny Case, Brita Goldsmith, Albert
Franco, Alfred Abken.
Bud Ewbank
First item was a discussion of a proposal to add a Sock &
Underwear collection at holiday time for use by the Long
Beach Rescue Mission. The concept was approved and
Karen Lewis will be in charge of arrangements.
Skip presented a final numbers for the June 27 Fairplex autocross. Even though we needed to purchase 250 traffic cones,
there was still a profit that will be split with San Gabriel
Valley Region. Feedback from participants was very positive.
There were approcimately 110 registratants.
Skip presented a budget for the two day AX/DE at Fairplex
in November. A reasonable profit appears feasible. There was
discussion about Saturday night chalk talk. We will need
more tech inspectors. A recruiting effort will be made.
The August Circuit was bumped to 48 pages. This is expected to be a one-time anomaly trying to catch up on some
older event coverage.
Greg Schill reported that excellent progress has been made
towards resolving our tax issues. Returns will soon be submitted for the past few years. While our status with California was current, we could not find required documentation
for the IRS, so we are putting that in place. We have engaged both a tax attorney and a CPA to lead us through this
process. Our cash reserves should be adequate to cover these
costs without putting the club at risk.
Hiring an accounting service to handle our bookkeeping
chores might be advisable someday, especially if we continue
to grow. This could amount to about $250 per month.
Jimmie showed our membership numbers for the past year.
Total membership is declining slightly. The key problem is
non-renewal, and there was extended discussion of methods for reversing this trend. Greater efforts will be made to
remind members as renewal time approaches, and to followup on members who do not renew to find out why. At the
present time we have 566 members.
The meeting was adjourned at 1230.
