BULLETIN
THE BOARD’S Letter
Dear EPIC SMVI Family and Friends,
This year has brought many changes to our organization. First, you may notice that we have a new name
(EPIC), although we will still be known by our trade name (SMVI). This name change underscores our
continued expansion in all operating areas where we can maintain and improve upon the high standard of
performance to which we are accustomed.
Second, the Board is very pleased to announce the promotion of Mrs. Clarissa Mitchell to the position of
Executive Director. She has held positions of leadership at similar organizations before joining SMVI as
Deputy Executive Director earlier this year.
It is our intent to communicate with you, our stakeholders, on a regular basis via this Bulletin but we
encourage you to be in touch with us as often as you may feel the need. SMVI is a non-profit organization
and as such, we rely on the goodness of those who know of our services and relay that information. If
you are able, or know of someone who can benefit from our services, we would appreciate a referral. Our
commitment is to perform at the highest level at all times so that no one would regret the support that they
may have been given.
Sincerely,
Bradford L. Carson

Human Resources
EPIC SMVI will completely evolve in 2013.
HR is an integral part in making that
transformation. Syreeta Knight has joined
the ranks as the New Director and with
the assistance of a dynamic team, has
been able to redevelop the policies and
procedures that will regulate the newly
named EPIC SMVI. Employee Relations
Manager, Vivian Click must be highlighted
for continually extending herself and
going above and beyond to assist every
employee. HR Generalist, Michelle
Pendergraph also deserves kudos for her
diligent efforts to increase recruitment
effectiveness. “Thank you both for your
unyielding support”.

VISION OF THE YEAR
“Be the change that you wish to see in the world” - Mahatma Gandhi This small but powerful statement is one of my favorite quotes...and is a belief that EPIC SMVI has affirmed to do as we move into another year. It is so easy
and quite comfortable for many to dialogue about the many issues at hand, yet offer no resolutions to make them better. It is our goal to make changes
that improve outcomes that will meet long-term objectives. EPIC SMVI staff, families, and stakeholders will make the greatest impact for the people that we
support by working together. The synergy that has started through extended lines of communications through ‘Family Forums’, phone contacts, and e-mail can
grow a vision that can optimize superior organizational performance and mostly, reflect “...the change you wish to see in the world”.
It’s a “New Beginning”...we are ready! Join us in making this change.
Acknowledgements
I would like to acknowledge and thank all EPIC SMVI staff and individuals that receive services for their support and dedication to making this transition in leadership
as seamless as possible. You are an awesome group! My total appreciation goes out to the Board of Directors who have such faith in my leadership abilities and
showed this appreciation through the appointment as Executive Director. Much recognition is extended to the community at large and appreciation for the well wishes
and offers of support from sister agencies. Thank you, thank you, and thank you!!!
Also...Look for us on Facebook.

SPOTLIGHT
PatrickGonzales
Recently Patrick Gonzales reunited with his family after 15 years. Patrick’s brother requested SMVI
to allow Patrick to attend his father’s memorial service. With the assistance of dedicated SMVI
staff (Cassandra Rivers, Keith Cauley, and Mariatu Kamara) who drove him to Eastern Shore, MD
to attend the funeral, Patrick was able to see his mother, brothers, and countless other family
members that have not seen him since he was in a crib. Amazingly Patrick recognized the majority
of his family and was able to look in their eyes lovingly. The moment was touching and memorable to
say the least. The family has vowed not to allow so much time to pass again without seeing Patrick.

CLOSING INFORMATION
Procedures for communicating closures to people we support and the community have
been revamped. There have been complaints from individuals, staff, and families stating
that they have been uncertain if SMVI is in operation during inclement weather days.
In response to this concern, the senior team has researched viable options to get the
word out whenever there is disruption in services that create an unplanned closure. The
following modes of communication have been established.
·
·
·
·
·
We have enrolled to the “School Closing System” with News Channel 8 (ABC 7)
We have enrolled in “Schools Out” electronic communication system
We post closings on SMVI’s Facebook Page
We send a message to staff using Carematic
We will use “Call-Em-All” automated messaging service, which will call, text, and
leave voice mail messages to alert everyone of closings
