With the closing of 2012 we bid farewell to our Director Beth Lillie and welcome 2013 and a new Library Director Manuel Paredes. He replaces Beth Lillie who has been at the Library for 25 years, first as Children‟s Librarian and, most recently, as Director. Beth is looking forward to her retirement and to spending time with her grandchildren. Manny is looking forward to meeting Library patrons and to a long and happy association with his „Home‟ Library. We are pleased to welcome the New Year and Manny, our new Director! Coffee: Should it be Your Mug of Choice? Wednesday, January 9th 7:00 PM To drink or not to drink, that is the question when it comes to coffee. Often given a bad rap, coffee has undergone intense research and the findings may change the way you look at your morning mug. Learn about the research and how to make that perfect cup. Presented by Luanne Hughes of the Rutgers Cooperative Extension as part of an educational series called Functional Food for Life. This program is free and open to the public. Please call 856-629-1212 to register. Blood Drive On the third Thursday of every month the American Red Cross will be conducting a blood drive in the Library Meeting Room. Free Film Screenings El Mariachi Monday, January 14th 6:30 PM 1992 Fiction A film about a wandering mariachi musician who is mistaken for a killer. El Mariachi is full of non-stop action, bursting with shoot-outs and thrilling chase scenes! One of the most successful indie films ever made. A discussion led by Patti Duskee will follow the screening. This program is free and open to Adults 18 and older. No registration is required. Bookmarks Book Club January 29th 7PM The Buddha in the Attic By Julie Otsuka Set in the Early 1900s, The Buddha in the Attic uses a collective voice to tell the stories of Japanese mail order brides and their new lives in America. Beginner Classes Advanced Classes February 4th—March 6th Mondays and Wednesdays 12:00pm—1:30pm Learn how to: February 5th—March 7th Tuesdays and Thursdays 12:00pm—1:30pm Students who have successfully completed the beginner classes at Monroe Township Library are invited to sign up for our Advanced Classes where we will build upon the core competencies taught in the beginner’s series. 1. The monthly newsletter of The Free Public Library of Monroe Township Marshmallow Madness Saturday, January 5th, 2PM As the song says, “in the winter it‟s a marshmallow world.” Ages 4 and up are welcome to come to the Library to build anything that comes to mind out of marshmallows, toothpicks, candy and other stuff! Cozy up with us for our eight-week winter storytime! It begins Wednesday, January 23rd and runs until March 14th. The schedule is: 3-4 year olds: Wednesday 11:10 AM 4-6 year olds: Wednesdays 1:30 PM 18-36 months old: Thursdays 11:30 AM We‟ll enjoy stories, songs, crafts, games and films. No signups are required--just show up for your age group‟s time slot. The 18-36 month group MUST have an adult in the Story Room with them at all times. After you read it, we’ll meet to eat pizza and food inspired by the book, take a trivia quiz, chat about the book and make predictions about what will happen next in the series. SAT Practice test Saturday, January 12th 12:30-4PM The library provides access to a FREE full-featured online course that helps students prepare for the SAT test. Join other teens in our Technology Lab and take a FREE practice exam that will give you an assessment of what areas to work on. Please bring your up-to-date library card and a calculator. Teen Movie Night Parents should make the determination as to whether or not they want their teen to come to a film event. Bring a pillow and wear your pjs if you'd like. We’ll have snacks from the movies, play some trivia games and sit on our comfy yellow seats! January: Futuristic Stories Celebrate the new year with a story that takes place in the future. Your future could be in 2 years, 20 years, 2,000 years, whatever you want! The story can take place on this planet or any other. February: Romance It’s that time of year! Write a romance story but remember that romance doesn’t have to be mushy-gushy!
