Report of School Committee
Brooks, Maine, February 19, 1816
Superintending School Committee:
W L Jones, term expires March 1916
A E Kilgore, term expires March 1917
C W Ryder, term expires March 1918
Officers:
Chairman, W L Jones
Secretary, E G Roberts
Superintendent of Schools, E G Roberts
Truant Officer, H E Jenkins
Six meetings were held.
March 13. Mr. W S Jones was elected chairman. Mr.
E G Roberts was elected superintendent of schools.
March 27. Mr. H F Jenkins appointed truant officer.
Decided to let transportation of scholars in the east part of
the t o w n to lowest bidder.
March 30. Recommended the establishment of a union
school with t o w n of Waldo.
Bids for transportion o f
scholars opened and C E F o g g being lowest, it therefore fell
t o him.
Aug. 2. The following teachers were elected: L H
Shibles, principal of high school; Miss Blanche E Butterfield, assistant; Miss Erma Barker, grammar school; Miss
Flora Tasker, intermediate school; Miss Gertrude Peavey,
primary school. Elmer Tripp was elected janitor.
We wish t o make the following recommendations: That
$ 3 0 0 be raised for text books. That $200 be raised for
physical apparatus. That the school house be equipped
with curtains. That provision be made for union superintendency with adjoining t o w n .
R E P O R T OF SUPERINTENDENT OF
SCHOOLS
T o the Citizens of the T o w n of Brooks:
At the close of the spring term of high school in Union
hall, under Principal Seth W N o r w o o d , we graduated a
class of eight, three of which were non-resident scholars.
Our fall term, under Principal Lester H Shibles, Colbv 1916,
with Blanche E Butterfield, a graduate of Farmington
Normal School, assistant, both of w h o m came to us highlv
recommended, began in the new school building with an enrollment of 26. Ten of these are tuition pupils, Jackson
sending seven, K n o x three, Monroe and Swanville one each.
Perhaps the w o r k that is being done in this school can
best be understood from the letter that I received from State
Superintendent Payson Smith.
October 19, 1915.
Supt. E. G. Roberts,
Brooks, Maine.
Mv dear Mr. Roberts:
The inspection of high schools for the current year is being done for the special purpose of increasing the efficiency
of these schools on all lin es. Each school is being considered
upon its o w n merits arid with reference to its peculiar needs.
I have before me the report of Mr. T a y l o r upon his recent
visit at the high school in Brooks. I am gratified to knowthat the school is so well housed. From the report at hand
28
it would appear that the building is all that could be desired.
I am pleased t o note that more favorable physical conditions have reacted in a marked improvement of the school
in general. Your teachers are apparently responsible in part
at least for a more satisfactor}' condition.
Their work is favorably commented on and I feel confident that they will secure g o o d results for the year's work.
M y attention is called to certain rather definite needs of the
school.
( 1 ) The furniture and supplies for the laboratory are
incomplete and should be put into shape so that the class
may w o r k t o advantage.
( 2 ) The school is in need of an adequate reference
library. I note that it has no dictionary nor encyclopedia
and that there is no general reference material. Some provision should be made immediately to supply the first t w o
items under this head and plans formulated t o provide such
material as would be of help to class instruction. I would
suggest as a temporary measure the State Travelling Libraries which may be secured from the State Librarian. Augusta.
I shall be glad to know w h a t action vour committee
may take upon the above recommendations.
Very truly yours,
PAYSON S M I T H ,
State Supt. of Public Schools.
Y o u will notice certain specific conditions that your
Committee had t o meet t o retain an " A " grade high school,
which they did the best they could with the financial appropriations available. Other things will be needed the coming
year, as per reports of Principal and Chairman of School
Board.
Our new school building made it possible t o better
grade our schools and we now have or can have if parents
will only send their scholars, practically all in t o w n under
one roof and management. Your School Committee did not
think it practicable to try to repair the Pavson house with
the appropriation made at the last annual meeting, and to
accommodate the scholars in the extreme southern part of
the t o w n , joined with the town of Waldo in maintaining a
union school at Evans Corner.
Owing t o an unusual amount of sickness the past year's
work has been interrupted by t w o vacations, while our attendance has also suffered while schools were in session.
Mrs. Mertie Bailey was put in charge of the primary
school upon Gertrude Peavv's resignation, and is doing excellent work, as are all the grade teachers.
I feel that I should speak a word of praise of the excellent
condition in which our janitor, E. W. Tripp, has kept our
house. It has been noticed and spoken of by visitors as
well as our townspeople.
Respectfully submitted,
E. G. ROBERTS, Supt. of Schools

MR. E. G. ROBERTS, Supt. of Schools:
The w o r k of the past half year has been very satisfactory, due in no small part t o the influence of new surroundings. Both pupils and teachers appreciate the new school
house and the interest is correspondingly great.
While at times epidemics have raised havoc with our attendance none of our pupils have left, and on the other hand
we have this term a post graduate student in book-keeping.
Our athletics have not been extensive, due either t o lack
of available material or equipment.
We have had several
public entertainments which, thanks t o the interest of the
townspeople, have been satisfactory.
The new Chemistry course has proved t o be one of the
most interesting courses offered. The laboratory and its
equipment, while n o t elaborate, are fully adequate and meet
State requirements.
The Traveling State Library of High Schools is of valuable aid in our work.
Books, apparatus, etc., have been well cared for and
nothing has been lost or mutilated.
There is on file a permanent record of the w o r k of all pupils t o date, so far as has been possible.
Have appreciated the interest of those w h o have had the
time and taken the opportunity t o visit us.
As for the coming year, $150 will be necessary for books
and $200 for Physical apparatus. I would recommend that
three of the five rooms be equipped with curtains, which are
badly needed
Respectfully
L M Shibles, Principal
