ROUND 4 – PHILLIP ISLAND.
The picturesque Phillip Island Grand Prix
Circuit played host to Round Four of the
2013
Hartwell
Motorcycle
Club
Championships. This round was combined
with Round Three of the MRRDA Junior
National Championship, and the Formula
400 Tri-State Challenge.
The round saw more then 130 riders take to
the track to battle it out in everything put
perfect conditions. Saturday saw heavy rain
from the night before and morning leave
riders with a damp track, only giving riders a
dry line by mid qualifying.
The difficult conditions saw Jason Embley
take a run-away pole position in the Formula
400 qualifying. Michael Halliday was unable
to match the pace set by Embley, taking
second position on the grid, more than 1.7
seconds behind him. New South Welshman
Phillip Burke, rounded out the front row
piloting his Honda CBR 400 into third place
1.315 seconds behind Halliday.
After a difficult qualifying, Yamaha FZR
rider, Jack Fox, dominated the first race;
with over a six second lead on Jason Embley.
It was an all-Victorian top four, with Tim
Podt and Michael Halliday, taking out third
and fourth place respectively. Young gun
from New South Wales, Stephen Craig, lead
fellow statesman Phillip Burke in fifth place.
The remaining two races for the Formula
400 class saw Kelen Kawasaki rider Stephen
Craig take both wins with Glenn Kettle,
Michael Halliday, Jack Fox and Tim Podt,
well in the mix. Race 2 was cut short, red
flagged and declared complete after only 3
laps because of rain at the rear of the circuit,
which saw a number of riders have some
very close calls.
Queenslander Tayla Relph had an impressive
qualifying in the 150GP/250cc class,
snatching pole from fellow Queenslander
Troy Guenther by almost a second on her
final lap on the drying track. “I was in fourth
and came into the pits, so I quickly went
back out on track, with not enough time to
change tyres or anything, and I just went out
there, like everyone else, still on wets, and in
the end I managed to qualify a whole second
in front of second place.”
KTM RCR 250 rider Lawson Walters took
out the final spot on the all Moto3 front row,
with Callum Alderson putting the first of the
125GP machines in fifth place on the grid.
Queenslander Troy Guenther held off
Walters in race 1, with fellow Queenslander
Callum Barker coming in third. Race two

once again had Guenther snatch the win
from Walters, with Callum Barker taking out
third. The final race had Guenther and
Walters in one and two, with Victorian
125GP young gun Callum Alderson taking
out third. Race three also saw Matt Barton
take fourth place only on video replay from
Callum Barker, with less than 1 thousandth
of a second gap between the two.
After a 20 Minute + 1 Lap race, the Greg
Bailey Feature event, the win was decided on
video replay with a margin of less than .001
of a second. The win was handed to Ben
Burke from current series leader, Tyson
Jones, the pair dicing their Kawasaki ZX10’s
furiously for the entirety of the race. Local
Mark Harris took position 3 on board his
Suzuki GSXR 1000.
Lawson Walters took out pole position in
qualifying for the Junior 80cc class, however
struggled throughout the weekend to
maintain his Metrakit 80 in that position,
with the likes of the RMU GP8 shod Jacob
Street and Jacob Whitehouse sharing the
pointy end of field with Jock Manser.
Whitehouse managed to take the first 3 races
from Street, with Street making a comeback
and winning the final race by .018 of a
second. Walters finished the round in fourth
place overall just 5 points ahead of sister
Shelby Walters. It was a weekend to forget

for RMU rider Tayla Street who was plagued
with issues throughout the weekend with a
fall on Friday practice entering turn 10 and
suffered machine dramas in the first and
fourth races.

Despite pressure from Drew Sells, Nic
Liminton took his Honda CBR 150 to a
clean sweep of wins in the Junior 150cc
class. Sells had a fall exiting turn four in race
one, and despite remounting and finishing
the race, handed Lachlan Epis second
position for the race. Tom Dodds however
was the consistent third place finisher for the
remainder of the races, with Danielle Foot in
close pursuit.
The 600 and Over 600 Novice class was
closely contested with John Blyth taking the
first race win beating all the 1000cc machines
on his Triumph Daytona 675, but it wasn’t
by much, with David Simons the first of the
1000cc machines only finishing .001 of a
second behind. Aprilia RSV mounted
Simons took race two from David Meszaros,
who lead Jeremy Gunia by an 8 second gap.
Meszaros returned the favour to Simons in
race 3, winning by just over 5 seconds.
There was smiles all round as Simon Teitge
won the Best Presented Trophy for the
round, for his immaculately presented
Honda 400 four Period 5 machine. Simon
then had the pleasure of drawing out the
winner of the free entry for the next and final
championship round at Broadford. The
happy recipient of this draw was David
Trotter from South Australia, who has just
announced his engagement to the lovely
Hillary – Congratulations from all at
Hartwell.
The Junior 70 class saw only two
competitors, being Scott Nicholson and Joel
Kelso. Pint sized Kelso took wins in the first
two races, whilst in the third Kelso and
Nicholson both took a race-ending fall in the
same location at turn 6. Nicholson suffered a
broken finger, whilst Kelso went on to finish
race 4 collecting precious championship
points.
Ben Blyth took a clean sweep of the 600 Non
Expert class with Kenny Redding, Glenn
Nankervis and Chris Watt all sharing in
second place positions throughout the three
races. The 600 Expert class saw Michael
Halliday steer his Yamaha R6 to the round
win, after current championship leader Bruce
Howie received a jumped start penalty,
sending him from first to fourth in the final
race.

The Pre modern class attracted 29
competitors with Wayne Nicholson taking
his Honda CBR 929 to a narrow round win
by 2 points in the over 500cc class, from
David Simons and Donny Biddle. Jason
Embley took the round win in the under
500cc class from Brian Bezzina only winning
on a count back after both finishing on 50
points, with Andrew Werner only 4 points
behind in third. The third race saw drama
with Van Ark Media rider Graham Van
Arkadie crashing out heavily at MG corner
on the second lap, causing the race to be red
flagged and restarted as a two-part race.
The
Hartwell
Motorcycle
Club
Championship is drawing towards the end
with the fifth and final round to be held at
Broadford on the 10th and 11th of August. –

Richard Marrocchini took his Ducati 1098 to
the round win in the Thunderbikes class on
67 points, ahead of Andrew Lear on 54
points and Greg Breese on 53 points.
Six sidecars took to the track, however none

Confessions of a

Continuing the saga of the Bat Bike, I decided to take
it to the Friday practice at Phillip Island, and as it
turns out just about everything went wrong.
I had watched the clutch operate correctly before
reassembly and loading the bike onto the trailer, at the
track I decided to warm up the engine whilst the bike
was still on the stands, then I tried out the clutch.
Bad move… the clutch did not operate at all and the rear
wheel spun up with the tyre warmer still on it, ripping all
the wiring out.
I pulled the clutch apart and found that I had left out a
washer between the basket and carrier, after fixing the
problem I took it out on the track. I thought that after a
life time of riding dirt bikes with a normal gear pattern I
would have trouble with the race pattern gear shift but to
the contrary I found it to be quite natural, which is more
than I can say for the rest of the bike.
ride so I rode my normal bike in all the motard races and
took the Bat Bike out for the Veteran’s race.
I was really keen to find out how fast it would be on the
straight as my normal bike managed 190Km/h.
To put an end to this cunning plan I decided that this
would be its first and only race, as I had heaps of trouble
changing gears on my normal bike because 1 day of race
pattern had overridden 50 years of road pattern habit and
I had found myself changing gears the wrong way in the
previous races.
The final disappointment was that I did not find out how
fast it would go as the speed trap transmitter had blown
over for the final race.
I did confirm that speed is not everything as I was 2
seconds a lap slower even if it was faster on the straight.

A Racers Perspective from Pit Lane

I injured my left shoulder at Le Minz Endurance Ride in December
2012 and have been unable to compete in any Hartwell Round this
season, so Round 4 at Phillip Island saw me on the start line as a
volunteer together with Michael Wright – our starter and my wife
Karen.
The weekend was an eye opener as to the level of professionalism and
enthusiasm we have within Hartwell. I urge each and every member or
associate of Hartwell to say a little thank you to our volunteers –
without them our race meetings would not happen – remember a little
sugar goes a long way!
Working on the starting grid for the weekend gave me a great
appreciation of how imperative it is to have volunteers on the starting
grid. I suggest that it is imperative for all riders to confirm their grid
position prior to their first race and to view it from behind pit wall to
sight a marker of some description to ensure that you grid correctly after
your warm up lap. Karen Skate indicated that some riders use a
whiteboard marker to write their grid position on their tank – not a bad
idea – of course some riders may have a couple of grid positions over
the weekend depending upon their entries . Correct gridding helps with
a smooth and safe start to each and every race.
I also heard the expression “we have a RUNNER”, which refers to a
rider not exiting at the first correct track exit after completion of a
race. A Runner delays the start of the next race and can be
frustrating for riders sitting in the dummy grid with their tyres
getting cold.
A point of safety for riders who need to put tape on their radiators –
usually the smaller 2 strokes – if you remove the tape after your
warm up lap why not indicate to the gridding volunteer that you are
removing the tape so that it can be picked up and therefore not cause
a threat on the track during the race.
I also now have a better appreciation of the contribution made by
Race Marshals Victoria and the many behind the scenes volunteers.
If for any reason you are not riding at any Hartwell round, I suggest
you contact Karen Skate and arrange to put your hand up for a job,
as I know that you will learn as much and get as much out of it as I

It is certainly a privilege to be
invited to add a few comments
to the VALE on Past President
Bill Petrie in our last newsletter.
Obviously, we are saddened by
Bill’s passing but it is an
opportunity to reflect on his life
both within and outside the Club.
I first met Bill when he attended
club meetings on his 500cc AJS
with Dusting sidecar attached
Hartwell Life Member,
early in 1950. He was a regular
Bill Petrie
attendee at all club functions and
race meetings, whether scrambles (Motocross), Trials, Grass track
and Road races. As a result of all this activity Bill became
interested in the administrative side of the club and took to acting
as a lap scorer, timekeeper and machine examiner, finally moving
on to receive an excellent reputation as Race Commentator, not
only for Hartwell but for a number of other clubs as well.

Prior to his retirement from his daytime employment some
years ago, Bill worked as an organizer for the Postal and
Tele Communication Union for many years. His sometime
militant approach to various club policies were at odds with
me as Secretary, but over a period of many years we
worked harmoniously to help establish the club as the solid
and well respected organization that it is today.
Bill was active in the AJS club, and was also known for the
love of his 125cc BSA Bantam which became well known
as the famous “Chook Chaser”.
Although Bill had been in poor health for some time he
always made an effort to attend as many functions as he
could, ably supported by daughter Sheryl. He was awarded
Life membership no. 20 in 1973 and elected Present in 1979
for a number of years.
Our sincere condolences are extended to Marion, Sheryl,
Darren and family.

note if you require a garage get you entries in early and only one garage per entry form.
Seniors & Juniors Road Race Meeting September 7 & 8. (Formally our Seniors Meeting)
We have decided to incorporate Juniors into our Seniors meeting in September at Broadford. We are tossing ideas around such
as a Le Mans start for a couple of the classes, a Generation Cup that will see the top lap scorer Seniors teamed up with the
- Ipsum
Juniors. This meeting is for those 45 years or older and Juniors up to 15 years of age that ride 70/80/150cc bikes. This meeting
is also run under an interclub permit between Hartwell, HMRAV, Preston, Mt Gambier, PCRA and Café Racers (Not all have
confirmed at the time of writing) The above is not set in stone as yet and will also depend on entries received by the cut off date of
27th August, 2013. But one thing is certain, it will be a relaxing but fun filled weekend. If you have any suggestions or queries,
please don’t hesitate to forward them to the office as soon as possible.
Entry forms for the seniors meeting will be available soon and can be obtained from the Hartwell website or call the office for one
to be sent out. Mark this date on your calendar and come and have some fun!
Col Sampson Memorial. Trial
The Col Sampson trials date has been confirmed, Sunday October 13 at Gruyere, in the picturesque Yarra Valley. Please see
website for further details. Our next newsletter will also contain further information or call the office. This is a fun event for
those participating or those just wanting to watch and have a laugh. Rumor has it that there will be some purpose built sidecars
entering this year. Last year with the introduction of the ‘Control Bike’ or it could also have be called ‘Out of Control Bike’ was
a big leveler last year. Camping is available, so why not make a weekend of it. Showers and toilet facility are available as are
BBQ’s.
