The countdown has begun, and we are now in the final stages of preparing your new
leisure and community centre in Midhurst.
The facilities
The new facility will offer access to a number of services in one
location, together with extended opening hours.
Thecentrewillinclude:
TheGrange,whichwillincorporatea
numberofservicesunderoneroof,isdue
toopeninFebruary2014.Thecentrewill
includeleisurefacilities,alibrary,customer
serviceinformationforChichesterDistrict
Councilandaregistraroffice.Tocelebrate,
wewillbearranginganopendaynearer
thetime,whenyoucantryoutournew
facilitiesforfree!
Wearealsocurrentlyworkingwiththe
police–withthehopethattheywillalso
jointhebuildinglaternextyear.
ThoseofyouwhousethecurrentGrange
CentreandMidhurstLibrarywillbe
welcomedbyfamiliarfaceswhenyou
enterthenewfacility,becausemanyof
thecurrentstaffwillbetransferringacross
tothenewbuilding.Withtheirwealthof
knowledgeofthelocalareaandyourneeds,
theyareperfectlyplacedtoassistyou
withinthenewcentre.
WecaughtupwithKevinMcCoy,who
managesallofourWestgateLeisuresites,
andaskedhimtogiveusasneakpeekof
thefinaltouchesthatarebeingmadetothe
newcentre.
“Wecan’twaittoopenourdoorsforthe
firsttime,”saysKevin.
“ThecurrentGrangeCentrehasplayed
animportantrolewithinMidhurstover
theyears,butthenewcentreisgoingto
offermanymoreopportunitiesandmake
servicesmuchmoreaccessibletothe
peopleofMidhurstandthesurrounding
areas.

membersofstafftoreceiveanaward.
Theirjobistomaintainthewholerange
ofcouncilvehicles,includingthewaste
andrecyclingtrucks.
Followingaseriousfirelastyear,their
workshopwasoutofactionforseveral
months.Thefittershadtoadapttoa
make-shiftoperationinanopenbarn,
essentiallyworkingoutsideduringwhat
wasthecoldestwinterfor50years.They
managedtokeep‘thewheelsturning’
despitenothavingaccesstomanyof

A major project creating new flood defences at Medmerry,
between Selsey and Bracklesham, is nearing completion.
Amajorprojectcreatingnewflood
defencesatMedmerry,betweenSelseyand
Bracklesham,isnearingcompletion.
Theambitiousprojecthasseenthe
constructionof7kmofnewseadefences
inlandfromthecoasttogetherwitha
wildlifehaven.
TheMedmerryseadefenceprojectletsthe
seaintoacontrolledarearatherthanhold
itback.
Theuniqueprojecthasentereditsfinal
stagewiththebreachingofthecoastto
makesaltplainsinland.
Thescheme,whichcoversthesizeof300
footballpitches,willbecomeanimportant
localpublicamenitybythecreationof10km
ofnewfootpaths,cyclewaysandbridleways.
Oncethewholeprojectiscompleted,the
RSPBwillmanagethewildlifehabitatsand
accessandtheEnvironmentAgencywill
continuetomanagetheflooddefences.
Theschemehasbeendevelopedwith
thehelpofawiderangeofcommunity
representatives.
TheworkisneededbecauseMedmerryisone
ofthehighestriskfloodingareasofcoastline
ontheentiresouthcoast.Thenewdefences
atMedmerrywillbeamongstthebestalong
thesouthcoast,significantlyreducingflood
riskforover300homes,thewatertreatment
worksandthemainroadintoSelsey.

Duringwork,archaeologistsfoundevidence
ofaBronzeAgesettlement–giving
historiansarareglimpseintolifeand
culture3,000yearsago.Theyunearthed
fascinatingfindswhichhasincreasedtheir
understandingofhowpeoplelivedalong
theSussexcoast.
Theyalsouncoveredtheremainsofan
extensiveBronzeAgelandscapedatingto
around1,000BC.
OtherfindsincludedsomeearlyNeolithic
potterythatdoubledtheknownremains
inSussex,anearintactMedievalwelland
a160m-longfishingweir,whichisalong
wovenwickerwork‘fence’whichwouldhave
satacrossanoldtidalchannel,trapping
fishbehindit.
Severalgiantgraniterockshavebeen
found,callederratics,whichwouldhave
beenbroughthereonicefloesduringthe
lastIceAge.Oneofthese,thesizeofacow,
nowsitsinfrontoftheRSPB’sPagham
Harbourvisitorcentre.
Thefootpaths,bridleways,viewpointsand
carparksareexpectedtobecompleteand
readytousebyNovember.
