WINTER TIPS FOR PET SAFETY
Here are some tips to help make sure that
your dog or cat stays healthy and comfortable
during the winter months.
1. Keep pets away from antifreeze solution,
and promptly clean up any antifreeze spills.
Antifreeze is attractive to pets but is deadly,
even in very small amounts.
2. Do not leave your pets outdoors unattended when the
temperature gets below freezing. Pets that are mostly
indoors need time to adapt to cold temperatures. They
must build up a thicker coat and get their footpads
toughened for snow and ice. Pets that get too chilled can
develop hypothermia or even frostbite. Ear tips are especially
susceptible to frostbite.
3. Short-coated dogs (Greyhounds, Dobermans, Boxers
and Boston Terriers) should not go outside without a
coat or sweater in very cold weather, except to relieve
themselves. Small dogs with short coats (Chihuahuas,
miniature Pinschers, and miniature Dachshunds) are
especially vulnerable to cold, and may not be able to tolerate
any outdoor exercise in extremely cold weather.
Volume XXIII Number XI
Make sure you use edible oil; most dogs will lick their
paws after you apply the oil.
6. If your pet walks on salted sidewalks or streets, be sure
to wash his paws after your walk. Salt is very irritating to
footpads. Gently rub the bottom of the feet to remove
the salt as soon as your dog is off the road.
7. Many animals are less active during the winter, and
don’t as many calories as in the warmer months. Reduce
your pet’s diet during the winter, to avoid excessive
weight gain. You may wish to consult with your veterinarian
about the right winter food portions for your pet.
8. Most cats prefer to spend their winter days indoors; be
cautious if your cat likes being outside. Don’t let it out in
bitterly cold weather, and be sure it has a warm place to
go if it does spend a lot of time outdoors. Cats that are
left outdoors may crawl into a warm car engine to get
warm, which can kill them. It’s much safer to keep your
cat indoors during the winter.

4. Many dogs also need boots in cold weather, regardless
of coat length. If your dog frequently lifts up his paws,
whines or stops during its walks, it is demonstrating that
its feet are uncomfortably cold. Be sure to get your dog
used to wearing boots before the cold weather sets in.
5. Dogs with long fur on the bottom of their paws often
develop ice balls between the pads and toes of the feet.
To prevent ice balls from forming, trim the hair around
your dog’s feet. Apply a small amount of Vaseline, cooking
oil, or PAM spray to your dog’s feet before taking him for
a walk in snow. The oil helps prevent ice balls from sticking.

Volunteer of the Month...
TIANA NELSON
MY NAME IS GUS
What is “time?” In one sense the word is absolutely
meaningless to me. Time is always NOW. Of course I
remember things. And when a similar thing happens
again I react accordingly to what kind of feeling I got
from the last experience. That is the basis for training,
which I was never very good at, and learning in general.
But I can’t, like a two-legger can, just deliberately replay
the tape of some past experience, just because I want to.
So I can’t revisit the past, much less live there.
The future? I guess that things will stay more or less the
same, until they change. And that’s okay too.
But “time” in the other sense of the word is very important. I don’t need a watch to tell me when it is “get up
time,” “go out time,” “go for a walk time” etc. Mostly
these times are established to be compatible with my
master’s schedule and habits, but I have more say so than
you think. For instance, Master may decide to stay up
late one night but I will set my own “go to bed time!” It
doesn’t matter that the Master wants to change the “get
up time” in the morning. I can make it very uncomfortable for him to stay in bed, and impossible for him to
sleep. Sometimes I just decide to make “get up time” a
little earlier every day. That drives Master crazy.
Tiana is a wonderful volunteer who has done anything
the staff has asked of her. She is very reliable and has
done a variety of things to help the MaxFund. She
loves to walk the dogs and she writes engaging bios for
them. She also helps take dog photos when needed,
which isn’t always an easy job! The bios and photos
obviously help the dogs get adopted, but Tiana has
taken advertising to the next step by making her own
“Adopt Me” bandanas using iron-on letters. Unlike
other bandanas, hers have “Adopt Me” in very big letters,
so people can easily see that the dog is available. She
donated about 25 of them to the MaxFund so dogs
could advertise their status, and she was even featured
on Channel 9 with a dog wearing one.
Tiana has jumped into helping the MaxFund with
marketing, and she has collected goods for Puttin on
the Max. MaxFund and the dogs are very is lucky to
have her as a volunteer.
Thank you, Tiana, for all that you do!
But I’ve got things I want to do: see what wild or domestic animals have come visiting, what the morning smells
are saying, what precious spots are inviting me to pee on
them, or roll in them. I have to go crashing through the
woods showing everyone and everything how wild and
wonderful I am.

A CAT’S UNIVERSE
by Snoopy & Gizmo
Hello and Happy November!
Halloween is over. It would have been neat to see all the kids dressed as funny things but Mom always puts us downstairs
because Gizmo keeps trying to run outside every time the door opens. Mom says not only should we stay inside
because we don’t have front claws but that Halloween can be a bad time for cats to be out in general. Oh well, I don’t
really care one way or the other unless there are weeds or catnip close by for me to chew. I much prefer to be an
inside cat where it is safe and there is lots of love and food close by.
Mom has started decorating the house for Christmas. Usually she does this after Thanksgiving but Mom and Dad are
going to visit her sister, so decorating gets done early. As usual I will have to deal with Gizmo and now Loki not
wanting to share their Dad, so attention for me will be even less while they are gone. I can hardly wait until the
Christmas tree is up so I can get under it, bat at the lower ornaments and sleep on the velvet tree skirt. The tree skirt
is big enough for me to sleep on one side of the circle and Gizmo on the other. If Giz and I are lucky we can knock
off an ornament or two and bat them around the room. That is until Mom catches us and puts them back on the tree.
I told you Gizmo and I would keep you posted on the dog situation. Well, it is getting better in some ways. Loki
now thinks we want to play with him when we hiss and growl and he bounces up and down and runs in circles.
Sometimes he is correct, we would like to be friends but he is still too much of a puppy and all his bouncing really
scares us. He and his feet are huge compared to us.
Hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving. Think of us as you eat all that turkey and know that we will not be having
any and will probably starve (that is perhaps a slight exaggeration).

FOSTER OF THE MONTH
Reg Griebling
WHY DOES HE FOSTER?
Reg has fostered eight cats for MaxFund over the past
four years. He typically brings home the cats who are
near death, because he wants them to be able to live out
their lives—however long that is—in a home. Some of
them have died at his home, some of them have made
miraculous recoveries and lived for years, and some
have been adopted by him and his girlfriend.
As a volunteer for MaxFund, Reg sees how some of the
animals really struggle there. Although MaxFund does
its best to provide a nice place for animals to live until
they find a forever home, for some it is just not enough.
He can’t stand to see them die without making it out of
the shelter, so he can’t imagine not fostering.
Although Reg has loved them all, a few stand out for
him. Shorty was a cat who, after four years at the
MaxFund, stopped eating and was shutting down. Reg
couldn’t stand the thought of him dying alone in a cage.
So he brought Shorty home to receive as much love as
he could give him before he died, which was expected to
be a few weeks or months. He and his girlfriend taught
Shorty how to eat again using a few licks of baby food at
a time. Eventually, he started to eat on his own. Shorty
taught Reg to never give up, and he turned into his girlfriend’s best companion. The two of them became
inseparable. After almost three years, Shorty did finally
pass away, but for three years, he received a ton of love,
and Reg and his girlfriend were loved in return.
Jeanie is another example. Jeanie was found as an older
stray who was malnourished and dehydrated when she
arrived at MaxFund. She wouldn’t eat at the shelter and
was given a week to live. Once again, Reg couldn’t stand
the thought of a cat living its final days at the shelter, so
he brought Jeanie home. Like Shorty, Jeanie began to
eat once she was in a home. Jeanie is deaf, practically
blind, has a heart murmur, high blood pressure, bad
kidneys and thyroid problems. She receives SubQ fluids
twice a week. But after 3.5 years, she is still going strong
at Reg’s house and spends as much time as she can cuddling on the couch with him or in his girlfriend’s lap.
Of course, he is rewarded amazingly through fostering. He has seen lives transformed when the cats
get into foster. He has seen shy cats become friendly.
He has seen dying cats get revitalized and he has
seen the sparkle come back into eyes that have lost
their enthusiasm and/or desire to live. He has been
loved immensely by the ones he has fostered and
knows they thank him with their love and trust.
For him, there is no better reward! He cannot
imagine doing anything else, and he only wishes he
had more room and time to help more cats who
desperately need fostering.
Thank you, Reg, for fostering our furry friends!
You, too, can experience the joys of fostering. MaxFund
is always in desperate need of foster homes, especially
cat foster homes. Please contact the shelter today to find
out how you can foster.
Reg also has Little B. Little B stopped eating at the
MaxFund and got fatty liver disease, which is fatal. The
MaxFund sent Little B to the hospital, where she spent
almost a week and got a feeding tube. She then came to
Reg’s house, where Reg fed her through the tube four
times a day for a couple of months until Little B started
to eat on her own. Little B is now healthy and eats like a
champ. In fact, Reg has to limit her food. But Little B’s
fur looks great and she is healthy as an ox. Little B
is up for adoption but she will live with Reg until
she finds a forever home.

MAXFUND’S
MAILBAG
Dear MaxFund Friends,
I wanted to send you all a message
to let you know how thankful I am
for the great care you gave me while
I was with you and for finding me a
forever home. I really am enjoying
my new family and I am bonding
with them very well. Dad works at
night and mom works during the
day, so I don’t get to hang with both
at the same time much but I always
have somebody home to take care of
me. My family is very active and a
lot of fun to be with. My sisters and
I get daily walks and do a lot of playing at my new home. Abbey, my
older sister, doesn’t play with me but
she is very patient when I am
around her and we get along fine.
Penny and I have become really
good buddies. We spend all day
wrestling, chasing, tug-a-war, keep
away, running in and out of our dog
door and other fun stuff.
Occasionally we stop for a nap on
one of the many dog beds around
the house. I also have a BIG brother,
Riener, he is a horse. I am getting
used to him now but he was quite
the sight to see at first. I have
already earned the privilege to get
on the couch and have my own place
next to mom in bed.
My first weekend I got to go camping
with my family and meet my grandma
and grandpa, they were great. My
second weekend I got to meet my
other grandma and grandpa. They
have a ranch in Eastern CO so I got
to run all I wanted and was exhausted
by the end of the weekend. I am
looking forward to this weekend
staying home with mom and dad
and relaxing.
My mom and dad say I have been a
perfect fit into the home and family.
They are very happy with me and
say I am learning things very quickly.
I am exactly what they were looking
for and they say I definitely have my
forever home.
I have attached some photos for you
to enjoy.
Thank you very much,
Kash (AKA Zang)

DECORATING WITH DOGS
Decorating when you have pets can provide unique
opportunities to express your own personal style and
taste. Here are some tips I’d like to share:
Colorado Gives Day 2011
24 Hours to Give Where You Live
Support MaxFund Animal Adoption Center on the
second annual Colorado Gives Day! On December 6,
2011, Colorado citizens will come together again to raise
millions of dollars for nonprofits like ours. Last year, the
goal to raise $1 million for Colorado charities was
exceeded—$8.7 million was distributed instead!
MaxFund’s goal is to raise $100,000!
Presented once again by Community First Foundation and
FirstBank, Colorado Gives Day asks you to give to your
favorite charities through the website GivingFirst.org, an
online giving resource featuring all of the nonprofits
participating in Colorado Gives Day. On this website we
share our goals, accomplishments and much more to
help you be informed.
100 percent of your donation will come to us when you
give through GivingFirst.org. When you give online any
time on December 6, the value of your donation will be
increased by the FirstBank Incentive Fund. Help us win
cash prizes! We have a chance to win $1,000 Bonus
Bucks and $5,000 High Five cash prizes when you
remember us on Colorado Gives Day.
Donate online at GivingFirst.org/MaxFund any time over
the 24 hour period of December 6 to Give where you live!
1. Bare floors, without carpet or throw rugs, can give a
nice open feeling to a room. It can provide a soothing
balance when you have many art objects that reflect your
love of animals.
2. Paw prints and nose smudges on glass doors and windows
break up glare and soften the light in a room.
3. Dog crates, when stacked three high, can add height to
a room and pull the eye up. If fastened securely to the
wall, the top can provide a safe and dramatic place for
exotic plants or statuary that otherwise might be molested
by your pets. An up light can make it a real focal point.
Cats love to inhabit the upper crates, leaving the lower
ones for the dogs.
4. Old towels and blankets thrown casually on upholstered
furniture can add a wonderful homey, country-quilt look
to an otherwise bland room.
5. Common smooth upholstery fabrics can look almost
velvety when lightly textured with pet hair.
6. Vari-kennels, placed end to end and topped with plate
glass can create an unusual coffee table, one your friends
will really remember.
7. Doggie beds, randomly placed around a room, can
add color and texture, much as throw pillows do.
8. Shredded or chewed books and magazines send a
message to guests that they are free to relax and feel at
home.
9. Dog crates can make versatile end tables, and can be
slip covered to match any room decor.
10. There is absolutely nothing that makes a guest feel as
welcome as three friendly dogs hopping in his lap as
soon as he sits down.
So throw away those videos by Martha and others, and
express your own unique tastes. Your home should
reflect what YOU like!

PET SAFETY
WALKING SAFETY
When on a walk with your dog, or at the park, it's
important to remember safety rules. Whether you own a
shepherd or a pug, you need to keep in mind that animals
are unpredictable. Never take your dog to off-leash parks
if they have ever shown signs of aggression. If you cannot handle your dog on a leash, don't walk them until
they are trained. You can do this in a large room, fenced
area, etc. If you cannot walk your pet, make sure they
still get plenty of exercise. Don't let your dog meet small
children or other dogs if you don't know how they will
react or if you know they will react badly. Don't feed
treats on walks or at the park if your dog is food aggressive.
CHIPPING
Micro-chipping can be done on dogs and cats. If your
pet was ever lost and someone managed to catch it, they
could take your pet to a local shelter or an animal control
officer and scan for a micro-chip. If your pet has a chip,
your information can be pulled up and your pet can be
returned to you safely.
TAGGING
Adding a metal tag with your pet's name and your phone
number on it is an inexpensive way to get your pet home.
AGGRESSIVE ANIMALS
Carrying a spray bottle or pepper spray or mace around
will help break up dog fights (stay a safe distance).
Protect yourself and your pets, along with preventing
animal attacks. Stray dogs sometimes can manage to get
into your property and attack you and your pets. Mace
will come in handy then.
