2005 Fall - Ronald McDonald House at Stanford
Ronald McDonald House at Stanford Spring 2007 Savanah’s family was devastated by the news, and scrambled to bring her up to Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital from their home in Bakersfield. Since arriving in September 2006, the family has stayed at Ronald McDonald House at Stanford while Savanah receives treatment. “The House has become our second home,” remarks Carine. While at the House, Savanah has charmed many with her bright smile and cheerful personality. “Savanah’s a very outgoing and talkative little girl. She’s grown so much and has come so far,” adds Carine. hortly after her second birthday, Savanah began making frequent trips to her mother’s room at night, complaining that her tummy ached. Her mother, Carine, wondered if the tummy aches weren’t actually Savanah’s attempt to gain a little extra attention. Carine did think it strange, however, that when Savanah said her tummy hurt, she was pointing or pulling on her chest and not her “tummy.” S Savanah’s complaints persisted and one night, Carine placed her hand on Savanah’s torso and was surprised about how hot it was, even though Savannah did not have a fever. Volume 14, Issue 1 Healing & Growing Savanah’s initial treatment consisted Story and photo provided by: of several months of chemotherapy Carine decided to bring Savanah in to intended to shrink the 15 cm wide tumor growing inside her tiny her pediatrician for a checkup. The routine blood tests and body. To counteract the damaging effects of the intense examination revealed nothing. Despite the test results, chemotherapy, Savanah received many life-saving blood Savanah’s doctor was very concerned about Savanah’s transfusions that bolstered her weak blood supply. “I’m so very grateful for the swollen and warm abdomen and ordered a CT scan. The scan clearly showed a blood that helped Savanah. If there were no blood donors, I doubt Savanah mass in Savanah’s tiny body. She was quickly admitted to a local hospital where a bone marrow and other tests revealed that Savanah suffered from neuroblastoma— would still be with us,” says Carine. a rare cancer that usually affects very young children. Finally, in January 2007, chemotherapy had shrunk the tumor in Savanah’s abdomen from 15 to 7 cm. Surgery was scheduled and a team of doctors operated for hours to remove the mass. Savanah’s doctor is optimistic “We Came Because” that the operation was successful. Page 2 Despite the surgery, Savanah must still McHappenings endure yet another difficult treatment. Page 2 This March, Savanah will undergo a stem cell transplant at Lucile Packard Volunteer Spotlight Children’s Hospital—a procedure that Page 3 will require a lengthy hospital stay Denim to Diamonds followed by a 100-day isolation period 2007 at the House. Page 4 & 5 What’s Inside Savanah’s family has great confidence that their little trooper will remain in good spirits throughout the lengthy treatment. “She is the strongest of us all,” remarks her grandmother, Laura, “she is our miracle baby.” Savanah and her family look forward to returning home to Bakersfield sometime this summer. 1 Wish List Page 9 Randy Cross Invitational Drawing Ticket Page 11 Upcoming Events Page 12 We Came Because... For years our volunteer bulletin board has carried this simple idea as its title. Since Ronald McDonald House at Stanford first opened it’s doors in 1979, volunteers are, and always have been the ones who welcome the families, who call to tell the families if there is an available room and who provide many extras, such as soup night, scrap booking and Art from the Heart. These acts of kindness, small when counted alone, make a huge impact on all the families who stay at the House. Beyond the effect the volunteers have on the families, is the effect the volunteers have on the House itself. In 2006 Ronald McDonald House volunteers contributed over 7,000 hours of service, saving the House thousands of dollars Winnie the Pooh Day! It was a beautiful day here in the hundred acre woods. To celebrate Pooh's special day the kids created their version of teddy bears and Samantha guessed how many teddy grahams fit in a honey pot. Now that Spring is in the air, please consider putting a spring in your step by volunteering at Ronald McDonald House! STAFF Honey Meir-Levi, Executive Director Pat Duffy, House Operations Director Erin Williams, Administration & Finance Director Paul McNabb, Development Officer Olga Corral, Program Manager Pat Tamaras,Accommodations Manager Ramona Nestor, Data Coordinator Madeline Mayhew, Bookkeeping Assistant Chase E. Inman, Executive Assistant while adding to the family-centered experience we do our best to provide here. Victory Ranch at the Almaden Equestrian Center invites our House children to a ranch outing every 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month. The ranch visits provide kids with a fun outdoor experience that helps them connect with animals in a therapeutic way. Enjoying the ranch - from left to right are: Shawn Stockwell, Rosie the Pony, Haley Stockwell, and Trista Stockwell Hog Wild! The kids enjoyed a day with the Rolling Thunder Motorcycle Group. The group brought twenty Harley Davidson Motorcycles for the kids to see and sit on. Devin looks ready to roll. Got Game? Shawn gets a leg up from one of the Hoop Stars, an all girls basketball team, while Savanaha runs interference. The Hoop Stars spent several hours playing basketball with kids at the House. 2 Volunteer Spotlight Mary Takahashi 5 years What is real commitment? Well, in addition to their regular shifts, these volunteers regularly “go above and beyond” what is asked of them. They truly are a key to the success of our House. In addition to her regular Thursday morning shift, Mary volunteers on a number of special projects such as making sure that our families who lose their battle with illness receive a beautiful wind chime and a very special card. Mary also dedicates time to the December Holiday Celebration. Joseph Scheuermann Judie Stepner 10 years 10 years Joe started out volunteering as a single guy, continued after getting married, and carries on with the House through fatherhood – washing crock pots after Soup Night every Wednesday, checking in late arriving families, and making himself generally indispensable to the House. Judie works every Tuesday morning and when given a task, is pretty much guaranteed to produce accurate, timely and reliable results. Judie has also served as the House photographer chronicling many events over the years. Cindy Summers Zoe Kelm 15 years 15 years Cindy, also on the Board of Directors, has served on virtually every House committee at one time or another. In addition to her Monday afternoon shift, Cindy heads up our Program Committee and is a tireless advocate for our families, bringing her heart and soul to every issue. For many of our families Zoe is the friendly and gentle telephone voice of Ronald McDonald House, informing them whether or not they have a room, then arranging for hotel reservations when we do not. Zoe handles every call like she is talking to her family. Mary Baron Kay Sims 20 years 20 years After many years of CLIK (Computer Learning for Ill Kids), leadership, Mary has segued into semi-retirement by serving weekly as a CLIK Room volunteer. Mary also updates the CLIK web page and ensures we have current photos of the families to share with web site visitors. Mary has a warm, welcoming smile for everyone who walks in to visit. There is no substitute for Kay! Kay makes sure that the December Holiday Celebration is a smash hit every year. Going on 20+ years, Kay assembles a team that takes over the House as they provide our families with a celebration which helps them feel not so far from home. During her regular shift on Thursdays, Kay also drives the House van to Safeway, where our families are able to shop for groceries. Kay’s commitment to the House is evident in every word and action … which is why there is no substitute! That’s real commitment! Where would we be without them? 3 Celebrating 20 Years of Denim to Diamonds “The best party in Silicon Valley” The 20th anniversary of the annual “Denim to Diamonds” benefit for Ronald McDonald House at Stanford lived up to its tradition of being “the best party in Silicon Valley.” Valerie Hopple, Facility and Logistics Team Chair, was the winner of a 1.4 carat Hearts on Fire diamond sparkler donated by Joseph White of Lussori. With its “Diamonds are Forever” theme, it certainly looked like a party James Bond would attend. After six months of work with a 24-member committee and 200 event volunteers, party co-chairs Karin Klarreich and Debbie Mueller were thrilled the event netted over $600,000. The black-tie gala featured champagne reception, silent auction, “diamond” champagne, dinner with a live auction, the famous casino with accompanying wheel of fortune and dancing to the music of the Fabulous CruiseTones. At least 725 guests attended the March 10 gala at the Tech Museum of Innovation and Parkside Hall in San Jose. For the 14th year, Utratech CEO Art Zafiropoulo underwrote the event for “the house that love built.” Event underwriter Art Zafiropoulo and his wife Lisa (photo provided by SmugMug) Celebrity hosts Don Sanchez and Cheryl Jennings (photo provided by SmugMug) James Bond would have approved of the martini shaker and matching glasses event founder Ron Conway, of Angel Investors and Art Zafiropoulo received for their years of generous support. Decorations had a cool 007 look, with a large faux diamond prominently displayed in the archway for dinner guests to admire, with orchid centerpieces surrounded by flashing ice cubes and signature Bond movie posters. The Fabulous CruiseTones’ arrangements of Bond movie soundtracks and pomegranate martinis (provided by Avenir Restaurant Group) were fun secret agent touches. Celebrity hosts Cheryl Jennings and Don Sanchez of ABC Channel 7 News showed off their bling by adding sparkle during the silent auction; Jennings modeled $1.5 million in diamonds, and Sanchez displayed a Maurice Lacroix diamond watch from Neiman Marcus, which was featured in the live auction. 4 “This party is truly a wonderful celebration of 20 years of “Denim to Diamonds,” Klarreich said. “We are lucky to live in such a caring and philanthropic community that supports the House in its mission to provide a home-away-from-home for families with critically ill children.” Karin Klarreich and Debbie Mueller, event co-chairs (photos provided by Jean Lannen) With sincere appreciation to all of our sponsors, donors, guests and volunteers T H E C A M P B E L L FA M I LY T H E R U B E N S T E I N FA M I LY MIKE VOLUNTEER SPONSOR K O H L B E R G K R AV I S ROBERTS & CO. To be close to Benjamin, his family might have faced a devastating choice: make the hundred-mile commute both ways each day, or pay to stay in the Palo Alto area and lose their Modesto home. Thanks to the generous support of our local community, the Andersens never had to face that choice. Instead, they stayed at Ronald McDonald House where they found a warm, supportive homeaway-from-home. Benjamin’s parents, Khat and Scott, expressed their gratitude: “Your house helped us keep our house.” The House couldn’t do it without you. During this season, please consider giving your time or financial support so we can continue helping families who are experiencing the lifethreatening illness of a child. 7 Mary Takahashi and Karl Kramer Mr. and Mrs. Barry Taylor Mr. and Mrs. Paul Tonelli United Way Silicon Valley Mr. and Mrs. Robert Van Reis Best Best & Krieger Ms. Mimi Webb Mr. John Webster Janet Weiss and David Wilson Paul H.Wick Mr. Garnett Williams Mr.A.
