he challenge: Create a modern
master bedroom addition that
blends with nature in Liz and Paul
Cushman’s home. The solution: An
airy sanctuary with just the right balance
between modern form and organic warmth.
“The architect designed a true contemporary
space,” designer Mary Jo Fiorella says. “My
mission was to bring in rustic touches so there
wasn’t a divide from the outdoors.”
Varying wood finishes—dark oak flooring,
exposed ceiling beams, and a reclaimed wood
mantel—did just that. “The stunning views to
the redwood trees, the warmth of the fireplace,
the proximity to their spa-like bath: It’s all of
these elements that make this space an oasis
for the busy couple,” Fiorella says.
An elongated reclaimed-wood mantel, above, and
painted floating shelves, left, display some of the
family’s art collection and provide an alternative
to built-ins. “I wanted something to balance the
fireplace as a feature wall and give them
something functional as well,” Fiorella says.
