Duff McKagan Reunites With Guns N'
Roses in Seattle
It wasn't quite the Guns N' Roses reunion fans have
been pining for -- no Slash, Izzy or Steven Adler -but on Dec. 16 at Seattle's Key Arena, former bassist
Duff McKagan shared the stage with singer Axl
Rose's latest incarnation of the band.
McKagan, whose group Loaded opened the show
and will do likewise tonight in Vancouver, played
on the 1991 classic 'You Could Be Mine.' Prior to
last night, Duff hadn't rocked with Axl since an
October 2010 concert in London, where the duo
joined forces for the first time in 17 years.
In addition to being a musician, McKagan is a noted
writer, and in his latest column for Seattle Weekly,
he expressed some trepidation about supporting Axl
at this weekend's gigs.
"I love that dude, but wanted to sort of stay out of
the fray, especially after that whirlwind tour of the
world we had just done. AND that damn book tour,"
he writes, referencing his recent memoir, 'It's So
Easy (And Other Lies).'
"But this fray is only a fray if I let it be," he continues.
"And now I am actually pretty excited to see my old
pal. His band is the nicest bunch of fellas, and I will
be home after all. The KeyArena will be rocking
tomorrow night . . . and I hope you all show up.
While Duff hasn't allowed himself to get too swept
up in the excitement surrounding GNR's upcoming
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction -- music "has
never been a competitive sport," he writes -- he
doesn't begrudge fans for celebrating the news.
"All of those fans ARE very important to me, and
thus getting this RRHOF nod was a victory for
them," he writes. "And so I am deeply honored and
feel very good about this whole deal. Thank you
all."
Paul McCartney Announces Brand New
As Yet Untitled Album
While many a musician is often asked about the
tunes that have influenced their songwriting, it is not
a question Paul McCartney ordinarily gets to answer
- until now. Paul is about to offer a glimpse into "the
songs which inspired the songs" with the upcoming
release of a brand new album of those standards he
grew up listening to in his childhood-plus two brand
3
new McCartney compositions: the album, which is
currently untitled, will be released on Hear Music/
Concord Records on February 7th 2012.
With the help of Grammy Award-winning producer
Tommy LiPuma and Diana Krall and her band-as
well as guest appearances from Eric Clapton and
Stevie Wonder, McCartney's new album is a
deeply personal journey through classic American
compositions that, in some cases, a young Paul first
heard his father perform on piano at home. As
authentic and daring a musical statement as he could
make, this is the album Paul has been thinking about
making for more than 20 years - and probably the
last thing his fans are expecting. "In the end it was
'Look, if I don't do it now, I'll never do it," he says.
In short, Paul believes it is about time "the songs
me and John based quite a few of our things on"
received the recognition they deserve. Moreover,
the record also features a couple of new original
McCartney compositions in the spirit of those
classics.
"When I kind of got into songwriting, I realized how
well structured these songs were and I think I took
a lot of my lessons from them," Paul explains. "I
always thought artists like Fred Astaire were very
cool. Writers like Harold Arlen, Cole Porter, all of
those guys - I just thought the songs were magical.
And then, as I got to be a songwriter I thought it's
beautiful, the way they made those song'."
Determined to approach the record in a new and
unique manner, Paul enlisted the help of LiPuma
and Krall and her band-who delivered ultra-high
quality musicianship and were completely in tune
with Paul's restraint and feel for the music. In
the studio, the recording of this album was also a
new challenge for Paul who, for the first time
ever, performed exclusively in the vocal booth
without no instrument - no guitar, no bass, no piano
- which led to a vocal performance like no other in
his career.
He adds, "It was very spontaneous, kind of organic,
which then reminded me of the way we'd work with
The Beatles. We'd bring a song in, kick it around,
when we found a way to do it we'd say 'Okay, let's
do a take now' and by the time everyone kind of had
an idea of what they were doing, we'd learnt the
song. So that's what we did, we did the take live in
the studio."

"It was important for me to keep away from the
more obvious song choices so, many of the classic
standards will be unfamiliar to some people. I hope
they are in for a pleasant surprise."
The album was recorded at the legendary Capitol
Studios in Los Angeles, New York and London
throughout 2011. It also features guest musicians
Eric Clapton and Stevie Wonder, respectively, on
the original compositions 'My Valentine' and 'Only
Our Hearts'.
Rodney Atkins Arrested for Allegedly
Trying to Smother Wife With Pillow
Rodney Atkins was arrested last month for alleged
domestic assault, according to TMZ. Court
documents say that his wife, Tammy Atkins,
claimed he attempted to smother her with a pillow
and grabbed her by the face to throw her down
the hallway.
Atkins’ wife reportedly called 911 at 7:47AM on
Nov. 21 to tell police about the assault, saying that
the violence occurred in their home after they had
been arguing all night. His wife said the ‘Take a
Back Road’ singer “had been drinking alcohol all
night and was intoxicated” — and that it happened
in front of their 10-year-old son, Elijah.
Atkins was arrested, but released on $2,500 bail.
Since then, the singer has filed for divorce and
claimed that his wife was lying, and his lawyer has
released a statement to TMZ.
“When Mr. Atkins realized their child was in
hearing range of the argument, his first priority
became getting out of the earshot of the child,” the
statement reads. “Mr. Atkins realized he would have
no recourse but to file a complaint for divorce. He
has exercised substantial parenting time with the
parties’ son and he will continue to do so while the
divorce is pending.”
The note from his lawyer concludes, “Mr. Atkins
wants to thank his fans for standing by him, as he is
confident the truth will prevail.”
In an interview that was published in October,
before the incident occurred, Atkins had said that he
and his wife would love to have more kids. “We
would love to,” he told Taste of Country. “We’ve
talked about adopting. That’s kind of the only way
we could do that now. But I’d have 30 if I could.
I love having them run around.”
Beach Boys To Reunite For 50th Anniversary
For years, there have been the Beach Boys, and
there has been Brian Wilson, and the two rarely
intersected. The pioneering Southern California
group was so influential to pop that it was, and still
is, widely regarded as America's answer to the
Beatles. But Wilson's involvement with the band
waxed and waned over the decades, and more
recently his role has been nonexistent while he
resurrected such long-delayed projects as "Smile"
(which the Beach Boys also revisited this year with
the well-received box set, "The Smile Sessions")
and a solo album "That Lucky Old Sun."
Until now. The band, which continued to tour and
record as the Beach Boys for decades, confirmed
speculation that all surviving members of the mid'60s lineup - Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston
and David Marks - will reunite with Wilson for the
band's 50th anniversary with a world tour and a new
album on Capitol Records in 2012.
"This is not the same act that's been touring 365
days a year for decades," said Gary Bongiovanni,
the president and editor in chief of Pollstar, the
concert business trade journal. "Brian's return makes
this much bigger than it otherwise would be." Click
here to find out more!
The band, which formed in Hawthorne in 1961, rose
to national prominence as the embodiment of an
optimistic, youth-centric surf culture with singles
including "Surfin' Safari" and "I Get Around." But
by the middle of the decade, Brian Wilson had
ceased touring, preferring to produce, write and
arrange for the group (which famously arrived home
from tour to find the group's experimental 1966
masterpiece, "Pet Sounds," essentially completed
save for their vocals).
The surviving members of the group appeared
together to celebrate the 40th anniversary of "Pet
Sounds" in 2006. Carl Wilson had died of cancer in
1998, and Dennis Wilson died in a drowning
accident in 1983. This tour will mark their first
performances together in decades.
Wilson is producing the new album of originals,
which is still being recorded. It will top a retrospective series that includes a new greatest-hits
collection and a career-spanning box set, while the
50-date world tour (with dates to be announced)
begins in April and includes a stop at the New
Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. The Beach Boys
remain the bestselling American band in the history
of Nielsen SoundScan for albums and singles.

Rising Country Artist Suite Caroline has
been performing and entertaining crowds
since she was only 8 years old. Now 14
years old, this up-and-coming performer
has already released 3 albums of all original
music and has had more success than
many artists twice her age. With her strong
vocals, outstanding songwriting ability and
energetic style, she continues to amaze
audiences throughout the country.
Suite Caroline, originally from the Clearwater
area – now living in Nashville, has been
receiving the attention of many major artists
and has now signed a deal to Sony/ATV.
Full Access Magazine had the pleasure of
interviewing the very talented and inspiring
singer/songwriter Suite Caroline.
When asked who she considers to be her
biggest influences musically and nonmusically she replied. “I have so many!
Reba McEntire, Taylor Swift, Amy Lee of
Evanescence, Sheryl Crow, and Miranda
Lambert. The list could really just keep
going!” Her non-musical influences are her
parents and her little sister, whom she
looks up to and considers to be one of her
best friends.
When asked about what inspires her to
writer, Caroline states, “Everything is an
5
influence, nothing is not an influence.
Everything gives you an idea and that idea
can turn into something beautiful or something musical.” At this time, she doesn’t
have a favorite song since there are so many
and she writes every day, now living in
Nashville. “All my songs are my favorites.”
There is a favorite song that she loves to
perform; which is Rock and Roll Shoes.
She also likes doing her break down stuff.
This is where she breaks it down and does a
trio with her lead guitarist playing acoustic
guitar, and her bass player plays a cajon
(which is a drum that you sit on). She loves
performing acoustic since this is how she
started out.
Since songwriting since she was 8 years old,
she feels her writing has changed from
thinking that the world revolved around a
boy, to noticing that the entire world is filled
with ideas and that there is so much more to
life, like family and friends.
Full Access asked, now that Narvel
Blackstock is managing you, how is that
going? Caroline states, “It’s going really
well and its really fun! He’s a great guy and
he is married to Reba McEntire, so I get to
see her every once in a while. So that is
really super cool!” And now she is signed
Full Access Magazine
with Sony/ATV, which is a writing artist/
development deal, they are helping her craft
herself and her music. She gets to write every
day with their writers which many are huge
and have several hits on the radio. Caroline
considers it an honor and a blessing every
time she walks into the writer’s room. “They
are helping me be the very best I can be and
ready should a great opportunity come up,”
says Caroline.
Suite Caroline is now in high school, which
she attends full time and then writes every day
after school. She says she is fortunate that her
school is flexible and she is able to leave early
for important events.
Some of Caroline’s favorite artists that she has
performed with are Charlie Daniels, Jimmy
Wayne and Martina McBride. Performing
with Charlie Daniels at Charlie Daniels
Angelus Concert, she stated, “It was so much
fun. This was my third year doing it and it
was such a great cause with great people.
I am lucky to be a part of it, so I will be
playing there again next year. She also had
opened for Brad Paisley a few years ago on
the supporting stage that she states, “That was
really neat.”
Her biggest accomplishment as of now has
been the deal with Sony/ATV because that has
been an accumulation of all her hard work. All
the hours that she has put into shows, writing
the songs and recording them. She states “It’s
an amazing feeling, I’m speechless. Just to
know that all the work really, really paid off
in the best way possible. You can’t ask for
anything better than that; I believe.”
Caroline’s advice for other young artists is
“to take your dream and run. Just go with
it. I wouldn’t be where I am if I hadn’t
performed. It’s a lot of hard work, if you want
to get where you want to be. But that is
what it takes. So if you really want to do it,
then go and don’t have any second thoughts.
Just do whatever it takes to get there, because
the payoff is great at the end!”
She has several shows coming up including
on New Years Eve at First Night in St Pete.
This summer, she will be doing a coordinated
tour again; once she is out of school. Suite
Caroline’s mom stated, “In working with
William Morris, they are always working to
try and identify major touring acts for her to
perform with.”
Caroline would like to see herself playing on
big stages, like the St. Pete Times Forum,
soon to be the Tampa Bay Times Forum and
other big venues. And when asked if she ever
gets nervous before playing on stage, she
replied,” No, there’s no reason to be nervous,
we are all friends and we are all people that
want to have a good time so it is always fun!”
is currently hiring sales representatives
throughout the state of Florida. If interested,

Typically, when you think about Canada, you
think about beer and hockey. However, this
time we would like to let you know about
possibly one of the best kept secrets of
Canada; the hard rock group Killinger,
hailing from Edmonton, Alberta. Killinger is
comprised of lead vocalist David Williams,
Bassist Justin Craig, Guitarist Kevin Morin
and Drummer Chris Challice.
Full Access Magazine had the opportunity to
speak with vocalist David Williams, Guitarist
Kevin Morin and Drummer Chris Challice
about whats new with band, the next single to
be released and their new drink creation,
FOYtonic, which is taking the world by storm.
Who are some of your biggest influences?
Chris: Tommy Lee, Cozy Powell, Tommy
Aldridge.
David: Kiss, Motley Crue, Stryper, Alice
Cooper, Queen, Skid Row, Scorpions..... I could
go on and on here!
How did the band come together up til the
current lineup?
David: I've known Kevin for a while... I
always admired him for his over the top wall
of amps and some killer guitars that he
owns....... he said to me that one day we'll be in
a band together doing what we love to do.....
a couple years later, I get a phone call from
Kevin asking me if I wanted to meet and talk
about a project!... I agreed and had the same
9
vision!...we shook hands and then Chris was
next on board after meeting
him at a Twisted
by Kathleen Sedita
Sister show!...the new bass player is Justin
Craig and I've known him for a real long
time... even played in a cover band together!
Justin's got a great voice and superb writing
skills! We've had a drummer and bass player
come and go.... but the line up now is what
were sticking to... We all get along so great on
and off the road, people can see that from us!
KILLINGER is Chris Challice, Justin Craig,
Kevin Morin and David Williams for LIFE!
I have the tattoo to prove it!
Tell us about your current album and
some of the special guests who played on
the album.
David: The album was produced by Rick Plester
who also plays a few solos on the album, Pete
Holmes (Black ‘n Blue/MSG) played all the
drums in the studio and we had a 3-time Juno
Award (Canada - American Music Award
equivalent) winner Bill Bourne contribute to
the gang back up vocal tracks.... And we
had the man himself George Lynch
(Dokken, Lynch Mob, Souls of We) doing the
main and outro solo on the track "Never
Change!" Mixed by Mike Fraser (AC/DC,
Aerosmith, Metallica).... Mastered by Ted
Jensen (Sterling Sound).
We've only been signed to Sony since August
2011... so we are still very new to the USA
and are still supporting this album. We have

2 more to do, so look for a new album in
2012!.... Stay in touch and be on top of all
OFFICIAL band news on killingerrocks.com
What are your favorite songs off the
current album?
Chris: I enjoy all of them. "Never Change,"
"We Are Here" and "I Don't Care" are my
top 3.
What is your favorite song to perform live
off the current album?
Chris: Has to be "Never Change," with all the
double kicking, plus the guitar and vocals just
rip in the song!
You Recently toured with Stryper. How
did the tour go and are there any
road stories?
Chris: Yes it was a dream come true to go on
our first tour of the USA with Stryper. A band
that has been a huge influence on all of us
for many years. The tour was long but as in
miles long, we did 9000 miles, 20 states in
3 weeks, the venues were awesome, the crews
we worked with were all pro. We met so
many great people that have now become
huge fans of the band. As far as road stories
go, there are so many lol, but one good one
stands out to me.
We were in Baltimore, MD and we left Dave
(our singer) at the hotel and told him to meet
up with us for some food over at the Hard
Rock Cafe, so Dave in fine fashion strolls over
late to the HRC done up to the nines looking
rather rock starish as he always does. He
bumps into Stryper drummer Robert Sweet
and his drum tech Kyle in front of the HRC
and says, "Hey Robert how’s it going today?"
Robert looks at Dave, lifts up his
sunglasses with a confused look on his face
and says back to Dave, "Should I know you?"
Now remember, we had done 4 shows with
them by this time so Dave says, "Yea man, it's
me, Dave from the band KILLINGER ...you
know the band that is touring with you guys."
Well at this time, Robert feels totally
embarrassed, lifts up his sunglasses and says
"Dave I'm sorry man, there's not enough
coffee in the world to wake me up, just yet."
So yea, they all had a great laugh about that
one!!!.. Great guys they are and we still keep
in touch with them.
You have a unique setup with your drum
kit. Tell us about this. And how was the
response from the fans?
Chris: Well you see the thing is Neal, I'm a
huge out of the box thinker and have always
wanted to do something different than anyone
else, which is not an easy task as I'm sure you
know! Tommy Lee over the years has done
some frickin cool things with his kit, Travis
Barker, Joey Jordison as well and they all have
the budget and space to do what they do, I
started thinking and researching into LED
lighting and how it works and what could I do
to implement LED into my kit. What I came
up with was my entire kit rims are wrapped
and wired for LED lights now, it took a few
days and a shit load of wire and solder but it
worked out perfect, a quick simple setup and
a great wow factor for the fans. They loved it!
Any plans to release another single off
the album?
Kevin: Yes. The next single, "We Are Here,"
will be released to radio in early 2012. We
will be releasing in Canada and the U.S.
simultaneously, which is a little different
than our first single off the album, which was
released initially in Canada. "We Are Here,"
is a song that has a vibe that is different than
"Holding On" and it captures the real essence
of Killinger as a band.
Killinger has recently started distributing
their own drink. Tell us about the drink
and how it came together?
Kevin: Well, it hasn't been an easy undertaking
that's for sure. In fact, it has been a project
that has been going on for years since I first
became interested in energy health drinks
while living in Japan. I wondered about what
was in some of the energy drinks that were
consumed by Japanese and found out that
Korean Red Ginseng was considered the
best and most effective herbal ingredient for
alertness, overall energy and health. In fact,
Korean Red Ginseng has been very popular
for thousands of years because of many health
benefits including significant aphrodisiac
properties and has been used a lot for erectile
dysfunction in Asian medicine. I thought that
developing an energy drink with Korean Red
Ginseng as the main ingredient would be the

perfect product for a rock band, like Killinger,
to maintain optimal physical and mental
performance and health especially when on
the road. Well, it does everything I hoped for
and when it came down to naming the drink,
I coined a name that contains an acronym.
FOYtonic is the "Fountain Of Youth tonic"
which pretty much sums up what it does. Of
course, it was formulated to taste great with
Jagermeister and we call the mixture the
"Atomic FOYtonic". We want to take it out on
the road with us in our "FOYtonic bus" on
our next tour and have our fans try it out.
In the meantime, it has been approved by
Health Canada and FDA as a food product and
is available to order online through our
website at killingerrocks.com and in early
2012 through www.amazon.com.
What do you like most about touring?
Chris: Eating at so many different places,
meeting new people, it's just great to get out
there and personally talk to the fans. I think
that means a lot to them and us.
David: I think the times traveling on the
bus, holding our stomachs from laughing
uncontrollably at everybody sense of humor
and meeting people.... Everyplace we toured
with Stryper, 98% of the crowd didn't know
who we were.... So winning them over in the
first song every night, was amazing to witness
from show to show.... but for me it really was
meeting everybody... shaking hands... giving
out hugs... taking picture's.... and the Spinal
Tap curse that seems to follow us around!
What would you consider as the band's
biggest accomplishment as of now and
why?
Chris: Well certainly having Pete Holmes,
Bill Bourne, Ted Jensen, Mike Fraser, George
Lynch on the album is quite the feat in itself!
Things don't stop getting better and better....so
as of this point as I write this....going on tour
was awesome.... but to go out with STRYPER
was a mind blowing experience for sure!
I was the biggest Stryper fan growing up....
They had such a huge influence on my voice.
So to go on tour with them and be able to tell
them how I got to this point and how it
would of been a different story from me. It
was Stryper that kept me going in the time of
11
uncertainty... I owe it to all the faith of our
record company, Sunmor Entertainment! But
there is so much more to come for Killinger
that our biggest accomplishments are still
to come!
Kevin: The release of the album in the U.S.A.
has been our biggest accomplishment because
it has opened up so many new opportunities,
like touring with Stryper. It has given us the
opportunity to connect with our fans and
confirm our belief that Killinger fans really
kick ass!
What would you like to see for the future
of Killinger?
Chris: Me personally, am looking forward to
touring, new tunes, new fans, and having a
great time doing it!!
David: What I see in the future for the band,
is a future!
I hear Killinger is now having songs played
at NHL games. How has this been going?
Has the group gotten any response from the
added listenership?
Kevin: Our label, Sunmor Entertainment, has
been quite busy getting the word out about
Killinger to pro sports teams in Canada and
the U.S. The soon to be released single, "We
Are Here" is a great arena and stadium
anthem. The feedback from NHL and NFL
teams about the song has been very positive.
Several hockey and football teams indicated
they would use it during their games. This
campaign has just recently started, but so far
the response has been very positive. It
certainly has contributed to our buzz on
social media and the 15,000 new fans we
have on facebook.
Any plans for an upcoming tour in 2012?
Kevin: Absolutely. Our record label and
agent are working hard at getting us back on
tour in 2012. It will likely be happening in
the spring, when the new single is released
and these will be special events because of
our planned Killinger FOYtonic concert
afterparties that will occur in several larger
cities to celebrate the launch of Killinger
FOYtonic. One thing is for sure, 2012 will be
a busy year for Killinger!

Renegade Foxxx transformed from homeless ex-con on the streets of New York,
dreaming of people’s shoes as they walked
past, to successful rap artist and CEO.
Renegade has a new single out, Let’s Go,
and has launched a $20,000 fan video
contest in honor of the release.
Renegade first hit the charts with his debut
single, Way Down, in late 2010. The hit
song beat out Rihanna and took the number
three spot for most added record in the
months following its release, creating a
splash in the Top 40 music scene. It was
with his debut single that Renegade
launched his first video contest, for which
he requested that fans create their own
music video for his song. The only rules
being to keep entries clean, and download
legally. The original contest had a sizeable
first-place prize of $10,000. With his new
single Let’s Go, Renegade is doubling the
jackpot and offering a whopping $20,000
to the lucky winner. Renegade sees these
contests as a way to reach out to his fans,
especially those who struggle in life like he
used to.
Renegade Foxxx is all about supporting
the positive. After living through a tough
childhood dominated by poverty, drugs and
prison, he feels compelled to reach out,
give back, and prevent others from going
down a similar negative path. “I had it
rough in life and I got very lucky,”
Renegade said, “and I gotta spread that.
People think that, you know, you need a
billion dollars to make it in this world, but
sometimes you just need somebody to care.
That’s what happened to me in my career.”
Renegade attributes much of his success to
radio and television show host Wendy
Williams and Hot 97’s Cool DJ Clyde. He
says, “They cared.” He spoke of Williams,
saying, “She’s definitely a role model. She
has been through it all, she’s been through
her drugs, she doesn’t hide it. She’s a real
woman a very good woman. I respect her.”
Renegade makes it a prominent point to
reject all negative associations in both his
personal life and his music. He said, “Drugs
make people dumb. I see girls leave the
club with a dude that looks like a monster
because she was wasted. I’m like man
when you sober up, you gonna be mad.” He
continued, “I don’t smoke weed, I don’t
drink. And I don’t own no guns.”
A video contest hopeful recently submitted
a video to Renegade that contained a gun.
Renegade, who personally watches every
entry, told Full Access, “I emailed him, I
said, ‘Dude, I love what you did with this
video. You’re very creative, very talented.’
I asked him, ‘But why did you put the gun

in it? I don’t promote guns. I’m not gonna
approve this video.’ I said, ‘Why don’t you
take a picture of Megan Fox and put it over
the gun?’” Renegade’s fan followed his
advice and his video can now be seen on
the rap star’s Facebook page.
In addition to releasing hot, clean hiphop, Renegade Foxxx is the CEO of his
company Still Hustlin, Inc. The company
invests in the music industry as well as
movies. Renegade uses the company to
reach out to as many people as he can. He
is currently supporting a young singer from
New Mexico. Renegade described her to
Full Access, saying, “Incredible singer, oh
my god, this girl is amazing. If I do anything
in life I wanna make sure she’s a star,
because she has such a beautiful heart.”
Renegade believes strongly in second
chances. He says, “I want to give people
jobs who can’t get jobs, you know what I’m
saying? I feel as though people that made
mistakes and were incarcerated should not
be hung like that for the rest of their life.”
His compassion comes from a very real
place. Renegade shared a little bit of that
with Full Access: “When I walked out of
prison, I was homeless. I lived at the train
station, right in New York City. I used to
have dreams of people’s shoes because I
used to see them walk by. But no one
wanted to give me a job because I had this
conviction, you know, and it was sad.
That’s why I said if I ever make it, I’m
going to always give a person a chance.”
Renegade continued, “I’ve made mistakes,
you know, we’ve all made mistakes. But,
it’s what you do after that mistake.
That’s why I really keep to myself and
don’t condone negative stuff. If a person
tells me if they’re gonna one day walk
on the moon, I’m gonna believe them.
Anything is possible. You put your heart to
it, and you can do anything. You keep that
heart, keep that faith strong, and you can
do anything.”
Renegade reflected on one of the moments
he truly realized he was achieving his
13
dreams. “I remember I used to walk in
Times Square and I used to say one day I’m
gonna see my face up there in lights. And
then when they put my billboard up, me
and Christina Aguilera and Jo-Jo were up
in Times Square on Broadway. And in the
daytime I’d seen it with my boys, and it
was cool. But at night I went there at 2
o’clock in the morning with my dogs and
I was like look, I told you I’d do it.”
“I’ve been thrown outta every record
company in the world,” Renegade said,
“they told me I sucked. Like, straight up,
told me. They don’t even send you a letter,
they tell you to your face. It was real
ghetto.” But Renegade allowed the initial
rejection to fuel his ambition, and ended up
signing with Sony. He landed a distribution
deal with Warlock Records, along with
Miami-based rapper Trick Daddy. Today,
he has a deal with Universal.
Renegade’s new album, Head of the
Operation, is expected to hit stores and
iTunes in September. “Everybody says
the same thing, like, “This album’s hot,”
Renegade said, “Put it like this: This
album is cool. I did a good job at it, in my
best opinion. And you know, I’m enjoying
it and I hope everybody else enjoys it and
buys it.”
Twelve of the record’s 19 songs will be
released over the summer as singles until
the full album drops. Renegade says, “It’s
a very entertaining album… You can listen
to the whole album, you don’t have to skip
one song.”
Renegade will be shooting the official
video for Let’s Go in the beginning of July,
and shortly after he will begin working
on the video for one of the album’s other
hits, Grinding By Myself. “I got a lot of
the Miami heat dancers as my dancers,”
Renegade bragged, “and it’s pretty hot.
We look good. We look great.” He added,
“I have a lot of shows set up, I can’t wait to
get back on the road.”

ALBUM REVIEWS
Amy Winehouse
Lioness: Hidden Treasures
Island
333hf
Lioness is not Amy
Winehouse's long-lost gem
or interrupted follow-up album, nor is it a
revealing view of a tortured star in the fraught
final stages of her life. Instead, in true recordindustry fashion, Lioness is a collection of
odds-and-sods cobbled together over the course
of nine years of recordings to create something
that kinda-sorta feels like an album. Executive
produced by longtime partner Salaam Remi,
who helmed her 2003 debut album, Frank,
Lioness carries little of the subversive swagger
or playful arrogance of the Mark Ronsondominated Back to Black. Whether it's merely
all the material that was left, or an effort to
salvage her image after years of tabloid drama
and self-abuse, Lioness presents a picture of a
talented singer at her most restrained and polite.
And let's be honest: Polite is the last thing we
expect (or want) from Amy Winehouse.
That's not to say the results aren't satisfying: No
matter what she's singing, it remains thrilling to
hear that voice come to life again. On Lioness,
for better or for worse, she takes on the role of
standards singer: It feels like a hearkening back
to her jazzy Frank days, the result of having
Remi at the head of the project rather than
Ronson. When it works, it really works: Opener
"Our Day Will Come" is a gorgeous blend of
triumph and autumnal wistfulness, a savvy
intro to a record that's bound to evoke emotions
just as nuanced and conflicted in its listeners.
However, on tracks like "The Girl From
Ipanema" or first single and Tony Bennett
duet "Body and Soul", she sounds like a
lounge singer, that unmistakable wit and
smarmy charm only a faint glint in otherwise
serviceable performances.
Considering that Mark Ronson-- producer of
her signature tracks like "Rehab"-- is probably
more responsible for her fame than anyone
else, it's surprising to see his involvement
reduced to such a minuscule level. As ever, his
contributions are the highlight: A new version
of the Zutons' "Valerie" turns what was a
tongue-in-cheek cover into one of her most
infectious vocal performances. Meanwhile, his
melodramatic rendering of Carole King's "Will
You Still Love Me Tomorrow" toes the line
between elegant and overblown, but better yet
it's a shroud of pomp surrounding one of
Winehouse's most delicately powerful vocals.
When she breaks out into her best falsetto on
the track's bridge, it's one of the few moments
on Lioness that feels truly, heartbreakingly
poignant, enough to cut through its stodgy
accompaniment.
Winehouse's best material never came from
covers or standards, however, but her personality:
her bitter sarcasm, her flagrant profanity, and
her dominant-but-demure air of not-giving-afuck. Even though half of Lioness is by her
own pen, it's a different view of Winehouse's
songwriting persona: The gorgeous ballad
"Half Time" is endearing but lacks the sardonic
bite of her other slower material like "Wake Up
Alone" (which itself is included in an alternate
Remi-produced version here), and it's easy to
imagine the fake-cutesy "Best Friends, Right?"
being more effective given an arrangement that
wasn't so transparently cutesy. Back to Black
highlight "Tears Dry on Their Own" is present
in its "original version," an almost unrecognizably
elegiac arrangement that on the other hand not
only emphasizes the strength of Winehouse's
own songwriting but its diversity as well.
Chalk it up to fine-tuned and image-conscious
execution, but there's little on Lioness: Hidden
Treasures that sounds throwaway, or like it
should have never been released; but there's
equally little that sounds absolutely essential.
Released before the album, the Nas collaboration
"Like Smoke" seems like an attempt at a new
Winehouse jam, a pertinent reminder of her
slightly more adult-contemporary-challenging
"urban" side, the part of her that made her
more than just a Grammy-adorned, technically
proficient singer. Here the track sounds like a
guide vocal, unsure and smothered in reverb,
with Nas filling in an excess of white space
rather than just guesting. On the otherwise
funny, doo-wop-styled "Between the Cheats,"
her detached drawl enters full-on mumble
Full Access Magazine
20
territory, Winehouse sounding like she either
can't remember or can't enunciate the words.
The chorus of backing vocals feels mocking
as a result, but it's a necessary moment of
discomfort on a record that sometimes feels like
it's desperately trying to sanitize a wild spirit
after years of chaos.
If that all sounds a little negative, it's because
Lioness is still weighed down with the baggage
that goes along with any posthumous compilation
-- but as these things go, it's a pretty strong disc.
It flows well, and if Winehouse didn't sound so
oddly neutered on so much of it, Lioness could
easily be another solid entry in her catalog. As
it stands, though, it sounds like the anachronistic
time-travel job it is, going backward through
the career of an artist who had a very distinct
developmental arc. At least in one regard,
Island and Salaam Remi have done the
"honorable" thing: There's no pretense of artistic
intention here, and no exploitative stabs at an
artist in the most vulnerable moments of her
short life. But in their mission to present
Winehouse as a singer first and foremost,
whiting out her personal problems and demons
-- the very things that made Back to Black such
a transcendent album in the first place-- they
reduce her to her pre-Black standard of budding
talent. Instead of adding anything concrete to
her legacy, Lioness only reaffirms what we
already knew about her, and hopefully why she
deserves to be remembered as an artist rather
than a media circus.
The Roots
Undun
Def Jam
3333f
Undun is the story of a
man, Redford Stevens,
dying in reverse, rewinding from the moment
he became a statistic and hitting the points in
his life where he's at his most self-aware. That
he's a criminal who got caught up in the familiar
street-hustle trappings that the modern media's
documented countless times is a pivotal detail- it's hit at an angle that seems to emphasize the
futile inevitability of it all. His life could be any
number of misdirected narratives that ends with
a toe tag, and what details listeners learn about
him are hazy, buried under archetypal turns of
fate and decisive struggles. That this protagonist
is a fictionalized composite of a handful of real
21
people, filtered through a matter-of-fact
narrative that splits character ambivalence with
journalistic impartiality, only makes his lack of
direction and the failure of any real closure
stand out even more. "Lotta niggas go to
prison," Dice Raw states on "Tip the Scale",
"how many come out Malcolm X?"
So the Roots' latest album isn't a sprawling,
rise-and-fall crime story, not a condemnation or
a veneration of a man living outside the law, not
a bullet-riddled grand guignol heavy on explicit
details of soldiers getting cut down. It's a
character study of a man whose existential
crisis ends only with his death-- a death gone
largely unspecified, the glamor and tragedy
washed over with a doomed resignation. That's
a hard thing to pull off, even for a band as given
to deep-thinking concepts as the Roots are. And
when your main lyrical catalyst is Black
Thought-- a man more given to allusions than
direct statements-- it's likely that it'll take a
while for the full scope of Undun to really
sink in.
If and when it does, it might strike listeners as
a bit skeletal: omit the mood-setting instrumental
bookends, including a brief, four-part orchestral
suite that builds off Sufjan Stevens' "Redford
(For Yia-Yia and Pappou)", and you've got
maybe a half hour's worth of material. By
?uestlove's accounts, writing Redford's story
introduced the headaches and challenges that
come with scriptwriting into their songwriting,
and what's left on Undun is the end result of
frequent revisions and rewrites that attempt to
reconcile character, theme, and continuity. If it
comes at the expense of nuance, it's not always
obvious: There's an easy-to-trace narrative line
from Redford's acceptance of his fate ("Sleep")
to his acknowledgement of how close it's
approaching ("Make My"), back through
declarations of aggravated toughness ("One
Time"), and celebratory fatalism ("Kool On"),
along ups and downs that juxtapose motivation
("Stomp") and helplessness ("Lighthouse").
When the vocal portion of the album ends with
two of the bleakest sets of verses in the Roots
discography, peaking with the estrangement of
"I Remember" and the desperation of "Tip the
Scale", Undun reveals itself as a story where a
man's actual death isn't quite as tragic as the
circumstances that pushed him to it.
The catch is that the inevitable familiarity of
this storyline, even in the service of a deep
Full Access Magazine
emotional study, is almost an end in itself-- a
cycle seen far too often, played out in terms
anyone who's ever been or known someone
with their back against the wall can understand.
And if Undun succeeds at putting one man's
criminal-world struggle with free will and fate
in empathetic terms, it does so at the expense of
any unique details or unusual traits that would
set him apart-- Redford is humanized, but he's
not entirely individualized. If you've bought an
Apple device in the last couple of years, you can
download a free app that includes some worldbuilding video clips and photos that give him
more of a full-life context. If you're still relying
on a Blackberry and a clickwheel iPod, you're
left with the voices of Black Thought, Dice
Raw, and the now-more-googleable Greg Porn
to fill in most of the blanks. They're admirable
technicians and can be charismatic on their own
terms, but voicing raw emotion isn't a major
strength for any of them.
The other MCs in the Roots' core provide some
welcome shifts in tone: Greg Porn's nasal drone
often slips into bluntly nihilistic imagery ("Put
the knife in ya back cut down to the red meat/
Daddy should've let me be a stain on the bed
sheets"), and Dice Raw's rapper/singer doublethreat role continues to provide a heart of
much-needed pathos. His closing line on
"One Time" might be the most pitch-perfect
moment of film noir cynicism on the album:
"To make it to the bottom, such a high climb."
When Phonte and Big K.R.I.T. deliver guest
verses that still feel like relative afterthoughts,
it's a bit disappointing, but they come strong
enough to keep the album's fated, introspective
mood consistent.
There's one other aspect to Undun that gives it
a sense of ambivalence, even if it's a minor and
comparative one: The music itself feels less
immediate. After How I Got Over channeled
frustrated, brooding soul toward a gradual
expansion into triumphant liveliness, the limited
palette of down-to-mid-tempo dirges here feels
almost stiflingly gloomy. Which means it
works-- if this album is a cinematic experience,
the score here fills in the cues for moods that
the MCs mostly just suggest. The drums-andkeys structure feels more delicate and less
urgent than the Roots' best meditative moments,
and what few tracks there are with some kick to
them-- the burbly guitar-driven "Kool On", the
worried funk of "Lighthouse"-- have more of
a pull in their chorus than anything in the
instrumentation does. Yet the cumulative effect
of all that mournful weight is effective enough
in the story's service. And in the run-up to "Tip
the Scale", a string-accented elegy loosely
reminiscent of "You Got Me", the idea comes
across that any glimmer of optimism in this
album would be beside the point. This isn't the
Roots' most accessible album, and it's definitely
their most downbeat, but it comes from a place
that isn't always easy to dwell.
Kanye West and Jay-Z
Watch the Throne
Def Jam/Universal
333ff
Two kings seldom make
a winning hand — unless
Jay-Z and Kanye West are running the game.
After seven-plus months of rumors and
speculation — but amazingly, no pre-release
leaks — the superstar duo dropped their albumlength collaboration Watch the Throne digitally
on Monday morning (the CD is in stores Aug.
16). To call it one of the most-anticipated
releases of the year verges on understatement;
the disc has been hyped by some as the album
that’s going to rescue rap, save the music biz
and cure the common cold (OK, I made that last
one up, but you get the drift).
Here’s something a bit more realistic: Watch the
Throne might go down as one of the most
exciting rap albums of 2011. Even for these two
masters of the game, that’s no small feat. After
all, superstar duets can pay diminishing returns.
And with egos like West and Jay-Z’s in play,
Watch the Throne could easily have ended up
being a war of words, a battle of wills, a clash
of titans. Instead, it’s a meeting of minds, a
joining of forces. Kanye supplies his usual
provocative audacity and boundary-pushing
creativity; Jay brings his calculated swagger and
laser-focus intelligence. The rest of the VIP
cast — including producers such as RZA,
Neptunes, Q-Tip and Swizz Beats, along with
guests including Beyonce and Frank Ocean —
surround the duo with a diverse sonic landscape.
Some songs kick it old-school, sampling classics
by James Brown or Otis Redding; others flash
forward into of-the-moment fare like dubstep.
Somehow, it all works, fitting together like a
jigsaw puzzle — and adding up to a crowning
achievement for both men.

Music, the thing that drives us, the way we
express ourselves and exert the passion from
within our souls. Not everyone has the talent
to express themselves musically. However,
one band that does is, Tampa's very own
Burning Fair Verona. A hard-hitting metal
band that doesn't just get on stage and play
music; but they give you a performance
unlike any other. They give you a show
you'll never forget!
With Josh on vocals, Evan and Barry on
guitar, Taylor on bass, and Nick on drums;
the Burning Fair Verona line-up has never
been tighter. Although being friends for
years might have contributed to the band’s
success, communication is key! So many
bands let the lack there of get in the way of
their music and success, but not Burning
Fair Verona. They always make time to
sort out any issues. Whether it be something
small like a missed note or something big like
your typical band drama, these guys always
have a game plan to get back on track.
For having only been together for about
two years now, these guys have quite the
fan base. Some fans, having started out as
friends supporting their dream, looking for
good music and good musicians behind the
music. Burning Fair Verona likes playing
venues like Neptune's Lounge in Tarpon
Springs, The State Theatre in St. Pete, and
The Brass Mug in Tampa, where they played
25
their first show. They get their music out to
all age groups, which gives them a varied
fan base. A fan base that has stuck to their
side from day one, no matter what. They are
eternally grateful for their fans!
When asked whether or not the crowd
has any effect on their performance, Evan
answered with the bands infamous phrase
"OH YEA!" They definitely get the extra
energy they need from the crowd. “When on
stage, you get a feeling unlike any other, It's
the best high, better than any drug," states
Evan. Taylor says, "It's a rush, can't really
explain it." Something I guess no one would
understand unless they were in a band.
Getting pictures taken and being asked for
an autograph is something a lot of musicians
get asked for. However when you're a local
band, just starting out, it may be something
you're not yet used to. Curious to see how
this affects the guys of Burning Fair Verona,
I asked them how it made them feel. Barry
was quick to answer, saying "It feels good
being recognized for our hard work."
Having been collectively involved in music
for about 10 years now, the guys of Burning
Fair Verona clearly love what they're doing
and plan on continuing with music for sure!
With musical influences like Black Dahlia
Murder, Pantera, and As I Lay Dying,
Burning Fair Verona's versatile sound makes
perfect sense. When asked who they would
Full Access Magazine
love to share the stage with in the future, they
said, Unearth, As I Lay Dying, and Parkway
Drive. All of which are heavy hitting hardcore metal bands. Upon A Burning Body and
Immortal Guardian are just a few of the bands
Burning Fair Verona has hit the stage with.
Bands that have talented musicians know how
to give an amazing eye catching performance!
Whether it be family, friends, other musicians,
or a stranger on the street, someone has
inspired each musician. When asked who has
helped them get where they are, Nick stated
"Other hard working local bands." Taylor, the
baby of the band, gave all credit to best friend
and fellow band mate Nick, and his mom,
Dawn. As a whole, the band shows great
appreciation to those who have helped them
get to where they are. Definitely not forgetting
where they come from and who helped them
get there.
If able to offer any advice to younger
musicians, Evan says, "Oh man, don't do it."
Nick replied with, "Play pop, you'll go far!"
giggling slightly after. Even though they
give this advice, they show no regrets in what
they do.
Some bands are constructed of people that
have musical respect for each other, others are
a structure of people that hate each other.
Burning Fair Verona however, is as drummer
Nick puts it, "a very odd family," but a family
none the less. Not only spending time at
practice sessions and shows because they
have to, they enjoy just hanging out together
because they want to.
Some hopes and goals they have as a band is
to finish recording their EP, and to release it
soon after.
As far as who writes the music, Josh is
obviously responsible for lyrics, which his
religious faith plays part in writing. Evan,
however, is given the credit for the majority
of everything else. When asked how he deals
with writers block, he scratches his beard and
laughs, answering "Definitely some Jack
Daniels and Bojangles!"
They practice at at a place they named, "The
Church of Sodomy." Where did this name
come from; a joke from a drunk night that stuck.
With nicknames like "Hosh", "Nancy", and
"Manbear", you can only wonder what else is
going on in these guys heads.
Hotdogs and Jack Daniels, the food and
drink of choice for these rockers, something
they'd gladly live on if given the choice.
Not exactly something you'd think would go
together, but to each his own. This is one band
that is definitely original and doesn't let what
other people think get in their way.
Burning Fair Verona is a band sure to have a
successful future in the music industry! Be
sure to keep your eyes peeled for upcoming
shows and their EP, which should be out in the
next year.
