The wide variety of world-class performances, whether they be classical music, dance, Broadway shows, jazz, opera or popular, has made Tilles Center a destination for tens of thousands of Long Islanders seeking quality entertainment. Although we weathered another season in a difficult economy, we can proudly boast many successes. Our season began with our annual Gala, honoring Lynn A. Pike, president of Capital One Bank. To celebrate our 30th anniversary season, the Gala performance was led by Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Ann Hampton Callaway and members of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre. The season followed with many full houses, our patrons enjoying the breadth and quality of the performances presented. As president of the University, I am particularly proud that Tilles Center is increasingly an integral part of our internal University life. For students, Tilles Center provides innumerable opportunities to enhance their college experiences and to enrich their lives. They have the unique advantage of learning about the arts first hand, by attending live performances, Master Classes and preperformance lectures. Our School of the Visual and Performing Arts is made stronger with Tilles Center as its partner in its educational mission. In spite of the challenges a struggling economy presents, our loyal cadre of corporate and individual sponsors, annual fund contributors and government and foundation grants, gave us critical support. In planning for the future, we had a successful endowment concert, featuring Midori, which helped build our endowment fund. In June of 2011, Swing for Kids honored Tom Cangemi, of New York Community Bank, raising important funds in support of Arts Education at Tilles Center. Tilles Center is a jewel reaching multiple audiences including our students, and despite today’s difficult economic climate, it is succeeding in its mission both within the University and to the larger Long Island community. We are privileged to have the support of our Council of Overseers whose dedication to the well-being of Tilles Center is unparalleled. Dr. David J. Steinberg President, Long Island University John R. Bransfield, Jr. Chairman, Tilles Center Council of Overseers In this annual report we have the happy opportunity to chronicle our 30th anniversary season, and to reflect on three decades of service to the cultural life of Long Island. Acknowledging our role as the region’s primary provider of classical music, jazz, dance, family programming, and touring Broadway, our 30th season featured outstanding performances in all these disciplines and more, from the New York Philharmonic and Wynton Marsalis to the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre to Patti LuPone and the road companies of “Spring Awakening” and “Cats.” Mindful of the need to build new audiences, we placed a high priority on arts education, building on creative partnerships both on campus and in the broader community. Looking to the future, we ramped up our long-range fundraising behind the scenes, and gave these efforts a public face with our second Endowment Concert, featuring Midori, in May of 2011. As we enter our fourth decade, our mission and commitment are clear, and we are grateful to Long Island University and to the Long Island community for their sustaining support. Experiences with artists-in-residence, in-school partnerships and world class performances provide thousands of students with opportunities to think critically and creatively and to discover a world of possibility. School Partnership Program Based on the Lincoln Center Institute’s model of aesthetic education, Tilles Center’s partnership offers a unique collaboration between artists and educators who recognize the ability of the arts to foster cognitive skills and improve academic achievement across the curriculum. The program operates with core partners in the Glen Cove City Schools, Freeport Public Schools and the Portledge School in Locust Valley. Each project begins with in-depth planning to combine arts experiences with classroom curriculum and culminates in a performance at Tilles Center. RESIDENCY PROGRAMS FUNDED BY THE GILBERT AND ROSE TILLES ENDOWMENT FOR ARTS EDUCATION The 2010-11 season brought many unique opportunities for C.W. Post students to learn new techniques as well as offer them insights into the world of professional performance. The fall of 2010 included residencies from The New York Philharmonic, The Shanghai Quartet, Christine Ebersole and Jazz at Lincoln Center. In February, Tilles Center partnered with C.W. Post Continuing Education, the Hutton House Lectures and the Pilobolus Institute to work with Hutton House Lectures, the women’s field hockey team, students from the School of Management and the Arts, arts management and the dance department, and local high schools in workshops that utilized movement as a medium to explore elements of collaboration, decision-making and leadership. The program also included an eight-session community project, which showcased a piece developed during the residency prior to the performance by Pilobolus. Additional residency programs included C.W. Post dance students working with members of the Paul Taylor Dance Company and the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. In addition, the center is partnering with Eastern Suffolk Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) who has been awarded a four-year U.S. Department of Education Arts in Education Model Development and Dissemination Program grant called “Creative Classroom Collaboratives.” This partnership completed will bring the program and residencies to grades 2-4, and their classroom and specialty teachers in the Riverhead and Wading River School Districts. The program is linked to the New York State and national learning standards and will collect extensive data on the impact of the arts-in-education program. 2010-11 marked the first year of the four-year grant; in years two through four, the project will expand to 6-8 teaching artists, 75-90 classroom teachers, arts specialists and other school staff and 1,500 students. 11 2011 Tilles Scholars Six young Long Island music students were named Tilles Scholars following competitive auditions. Each received a partial scholarship to participate in the 30th annual C.W. Post Chamber Music Festival in July 2011. The Festival is an intensive three-week program that focuses on the study and performance of the standard chamber music repertoire. It is directed by Dr. Susan Deaver and coached by the faculty ensemble-in-residence, The Pierrot Consort. The scholars ranged in age from 11-17 and originated from Syosset, Greenlawn, Westbury, Rockville Center, Westbury and Great Neck. Student Art Exhibits The Patrons Lounge of Tilles Center is utilized each year as an art gallery for local students. A series of exhibits featured works by the students from the C.W. Post Art Department and K–12 schools. Participants included the C.W. Post faculty and student artists, the Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts and the Plainview, Eastmeadow, Amityville, Commack school districts.
