LONG ISLAND UNIVERSITY
In its ninth decade of providing access to the American dream through excellence
in higher education, Long Island University is a multicampus, diverse, doctoral
institution of higher learning. One of the largest and most comprehensive private
universities in the country, Long Island University offers 590 undergraduate,
graduate and doctoral degree programs and certificates, and educates
over 24,000* students in degree-credit and continuing education programs
in Brooklyn, Brookville (C.W. Post), Brentwood, Riverhead, Rockland and
Westchester. The Arnold & Marie Schwartz College of Pharmacy and Health
Sciences prepares students for successful careers in the fields of pharmacy and
health care. The University’s Global College offers a wide range of study abroad
options at overseas centers in China, Costa Rica and India, and through program
offerings in Australia, Taiwan, Thailand and Turkey.
Long Island University’s nearly 600 full-time faculty members provide outstanding
instruction, which is supplemented by internships and cooperative education
opportunities. The accomplishments of more than 178,000 living alumni are a
testament to the success of its mission–providing the highest level of education
to people from all walks of life. The University’s NCAA Division I and II athletic
teams, nationally renowned George Polk Awards in journalism, and Tilles Center
for the Performing Arts provide enrichment for students and the community.

Tilles Center thrives despite the economic buffeting that all arts and cultural
institutions have experienced since 2008. The quality of our programming remains
superb; the house was full of enthusiastic music and dance lovers throughout the
season. Moreover, Tilles Center is reaching a broad spectrum of audiences,
people of all ages who delight in the artists on stage, who revel in the convenience
and informality of the experience, and whose souls are nurtured as only great
performance art can do.
With the economy slow to recover, it was another challenging year at Tilles
Center. Sadly, arts organizations continued to struggle with fundraising initiatives.
Nevertheless, I am proud to report that our annual Gala managed to equal the
financial success of the previous year. We are grateful to our honoree, ProHEALTH
Care Associates, LLP for their active participation in ensuring this success. Linda Eder
and Brian Stokes Mitchell performed to a full house on this beautiful Gala evening.
But even if every seat for every concert or recital or children’s performance is sold, there remains a financial
gap that must be closed by endowment, contributions and sponsorships. This publication lists those of you
who collectively make a critical difference. You are the good folks who help to cover the shortfall and you
deserve our special recognition as donors and patrons of this wonderful performing arts center.
Our corporate and individual sponsors and contributors to our Annual Fund, along with government and
foundation grants, helped to ensure that we presented our usual array of world-class performances. Our efforts
to build a strong endowment were enhanced with a spring concert by the London Philharmonic. As always,
we were able to raise important funds for Arts Education with our annual Swing for Kids golf and tennis
tournament, honoring Donald Eversoll.
On behalf of a grateful University and the tens of thousands of ticket holders who come to Tilles Center, I am
privileged to say “thank you.”
Dr. David J. Steinberg
President, Long Island University
I am, as always, enormously grateful to our Council of Overseers for their wise counsel and support.
John R. Bransfield, Jr.
Chairman, Tilles Center Council of Overseers
After hosting a first-ever “Long Island Fringe Festival” in September, we opened
our 29th season with a burst of energy from the Great White Way. Star turns
by Bernadette Peters on Opening Night and by Brian Stokes Mitchell and Linda
Eder in our fall Gala were quickly followed by a sold-out performance of the
recent hit show “Avenue Q.” “Hairspray” lit up the mid-winter, and in the spring
we celebrated the 75th anniversary of the Broadway opening of the Gershwins’
“Porgy and Bess” with a handsome and beautifully sung revival. Returning to
Tilles Center after more than a decade, Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops inaugurated what we hope
will become a new tradition of “Christmas with the Pops.” Alan Gilbert’s first Long Island appearance at
the helm of the New York Philharmonic was a milestone that promises much for the future of our classical
programs, as was a sensational performance by the young Chinese superstar Lang Lang. Cutting-edge
Pall Dance, great events for families and children, intimate cabaret evenings at Club T, and mainstage
sellouts for singer-songwriter Jackson Browne and illusionist David Copperfield rounded out our profile in
2009 – 2010. It was a very good year.

E D U C A T I O N
T
he Arts Education program at Tilles Center
continues to thrive, hosting tens of thousands
of students annually to experience the joys
of live music, dance, and theater. All of our
programs share a common goal: to allow
participants to experience performing and visual arts
firsthand, and to develop greater awareness of how the
arts relate to our lives and to our world.
School Partnership Program
Tilles Center’s School Partnership program is based on the
Lincoln Center Institute’s model of aesthetic education and has
been building partnerships between schools and Tilles Center
since 2001. Through active engagement in arts activities,
students and teachers explore the arts and develop perceptual skills, critical thinking, imagination,
and teamwork. The approach encourages student-centered, inquiry-based, active learning.
C a m pus C ollaboration
Tilles Center / C.W. Post residency programs take advantage of the many world-class performers who
come to the Tilles Center stage. Thanks to generous support from the Gilbert and Rose Tilles Endowment
for Arts Education, several artists were involved in activities with C.W. Post students in 2009–10,
teaching them new techniques and approaches to art while helping them gain insights into the world of
professional performance. 2009–10 residencies included a master class with Edward Arron, cellist, for
music students, and master dance classes led by Rasta Thomas (Bad Boys of Dance), members of the
Parsons Dance company and the Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet.
The Post Theatre Company presented William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet on April 22, 2010 in
Hillwood Recital Hall. The production was a condensed, fast-paced and exciting adaptation of the classic
play, created by a small cast of actors playing multiple roles and designed to speak directly to a modern
audience. This production was produced by Tilles Center, with funds from the U.S. Department of Justice
and the Gilbert and Rose Tilles Endowment for Arts Education.
Each project is co-created by partner teachers and teaching artists in order to complement school
curriculum. In-school workshops culminate in attendance at professional performances at Tilles
Center.
In addition to in-depth activities with our core partner schools in Glen Cove, Freeport and Locust
Valley, funds from a U.S. Department of Justice grant provided diverse arts experiences for atrisk/high-need students from the Amityville, Brentwood, Roosevelt and Uniondale school districts.
These schoolchildren participated in experiential workshops led by Tilles Center teaching artists.
Residencies culminated in students attending performances at Tilles Center of Black Violin,
Harold and the Purple Crayon, The Mayhem Poets, Romeo and Juliet, The Year of the Tiger and
Calpulli Mexican Dance Company. Dr. Jeong-eun Rhee, Assistant Professor, Long Island University
Department of Curriculum and Instruction, served as the research and assessment leader for the
U.S. Department of Justice grant. Dr. Rhee worked with the students and faculty at Roosevelt High
School, researching the impact of arts activities on student motivation and attendance.
“Aesthetic education involves a lot of decision making and problem solving, and this is critical for
children…it will prove to be invaluable to them as they grow to be productive citizens of our world.”
—Nancy Ticali, Centennial Avenue School, Roosevelt

2 0 1 0 Tilles Scholars
Five young Long Island music students
were named Tilles Scholars following
competitive auditions. Each received a
partial scholarship to participate in the 28th
annual C.W. Post Chamber Music Festival in
July 2009. The Festival is an intensive threeweek program that focuses on the study and
performance of the standard chamber music
repertoire. It is directed by Dr. Susan Deaver
and coached by the faculty ensemble-inresidence, The Pierrot Consort. The scholars
ranged in age from 10-17 and came from
Dix Hills, Syosset, Rego Park, Locust Valley
and Westbury.
S tudent Art Ex hibits
The Patrons Lounge of Tilles Center has been
utilized as an art gallery for local students.
A series of exhibits featured works by the
students from the C.W. Post Art Department
and K–12 schools. The rotating exhibits
were on display through mid-June 2010.
