Welcome to your new
hospital newspaper!
A transformational time for JBMH
“Our top priority at JBMH is to have
an organization that is focused on
Quality, Safety and Service.”
Finding new ways
to tell our stories
At Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital, we know that
effective communication is an integral part of how we
provide care to our patients. Only by talking to each
other and to our patients and by sharing our stories
can we truly grow, learn, improve and understand the
value and importance of quality, safety and service to
our community hospital.
To help us ensure we are an organization focused
on quality, safety and service, we've launched a new
monthly publication called the Pulse. This is a new
venture for Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital and offers
an exciting way for the hospital to communicate not just
to hospital staff but also to the thousands of patients
who come through our doors and to members of our
community interested in what's happening at JBMH.
We've partnered with Vim & Vigour, a quarterly
magazine, and we are in the process of updating
our web site so that JBMH staff, our patients and the
community can find the information they need about
our services.
All of these vehicles – the Pulse, Vim & Vigour, our
web site – are really new ways for us to tell our story.
I am pleased to have joined
JBMH as the new Corporate
Communications
Specialist,
working with you to tell the
story about how fantastic our
community hospital truly is.
I invite you to send me your
ideas for upcoming issues of the
Pulse and to contact me with
your communication needs.

Eric Vandewall, President and CEO,
Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital
The following article from Eric Vandewall,
President and CEO of Joseph Brant Memorial
Hospital appeared in The Burlington Post on
October 18, 2010. Mr. Vandewall outlined
several key areas our hospital is focusing on
and the progress we are making.
Recently I have had the opportunity to
speak with members of our community
through two functions held by the JBMH
Foundation. During these presentations I
highlighted our hospital’s successes, our
challenges, and the importance of our
upcoming hospital redevelopment to the
future of our community.
I have been quite vocal that our top priority at
JBMH is to have an organization that is focused
on Quality, Safety, and Service. This will mean
we will have to do things differently and make
some necessary changes. Let me explain.
The Hospitalist Model approach is a good
example of making change that will positively
impact patient care. The Hospitalist Model
allows patients who do not have a physician to
be assigned a doctor when they are admitted to
hospital. This approach provides for continuity
of care and improves quality of care for patients
who do not have a family physician.
We have also been successful in reducing
our Alternative Level of Care (ALC) rate from 32
to 21 per cent and our rate of C-Sections from
35 to 22 per cent. And, our rates of C difficile
and anti-biotic resistant organisms (ARO’s) are
consistently among the lowest in the province.
As well, we have a compliance rate of 99.94 per
cent for the Surgical Safety Checklist that ranks
us among the highest in the HNHB LHIN.
In tough economic times we have
demonstrated good financial stewardship and
we were able to balance the 2009 -2010 budget
after two successive years’ deficits. For 2010
-2011 we again will have a balanced budget
despite shortfalls in government funding and
an increase in demand for services.
We also face some real challenges!
Renewal of our Emergency Department
with a focus on improving quality, customer
service, leadership, and communication
is a priority. A new plan addressing these
concerns will be released shortly.
We also recognize a need to address and
change the current culture at JBMH and
we are in the process of developing a new
Strategic Plan which will lead us to becoming
a leading practice hospital and continue
providing quality care to our community.
Ontario’s fiscal environment will also have
a direct impact on our hospital. There are
unpredictable years ahead with potential
zero per cent increases in provincial funding
when our cost profile is increasing at a rate
of 2-4 per cent per year. Despite the potential
impact it is a great opportunity to find new
ways to work differently and in partnership
with our neighbour hospitals.
Our hospital’s redevelopment looks
promising as we await project approval
and placement in the Government’s 10 year
Capital Plan. If approved we will be shovel
ready by 2013 – 2014.
This is a transformational time for JBMH.
We have had many successes but also
face real challenges. That being said, the
transformation of JBMH has begun and there
is no doubt that we are making progress.

Patient Safety Week highlights how
JBMH staff are working together to
keep our patients safe
Launched by the Canadian Patient Safety
Institute (CPSI), Canadian Patient Safety
Week is a national annual campaign whose
goal is to build and advance a safer health
system for Canadians. During the week
thousands of healthcare professionals,
patients and families help raise awareness
of patient safety issues and share
information about best practices in patient
safety.
This year, the JBMH Patient Safety
Week Planning Group organized several
interactive events to celebrate our
successes and initiatives in patient safety
and to bring further awareness around
communication and it’s very important
role in keeping our patients safe.
Over 350 staff members joined in on
events from November 1-5.
The kick-off to the week began with
the presentation “Through the Patient’s
Eyes” with guest speakers Dave Tisiot, Vice
President, People and Clinical Support
Services, Rose Pong, RN and Brian Sharpe,
a Burlington resident whose wife was a
patient at JBMH’s Palliative Care Unit.
Other events from the week included the
Patient Safety Fair, Clinical Units Patient
Safety Daily Video Rounds and a hilarious
game of Falls Risk Jeopardy. The Pharmacy
Department also held an Open House
where 60-70 visitors had a tour of the
pharmacy and learned about its initiatives
to promote patient safety.
JBMH staff members and guests, including Burlington
resident Brian Sharpe (top centre), participated in a number
of activities to raise awareness about patient safety during
Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital's
Patient Safety Week November 1-5, 2010.

Occupational Therapy
month at the hospital and
in the community
On June 25, the JBMH Cancer Clinic team
took part in a “Care for the Caregivers” retreat
at the Royal Botanical Gardens to help build
upon their already impressive teamwork
and leadership skills. The event included
dinner, prizes, teambuilding exercises, and a
few hours of fun away from the hospital.
“This was the first time that the group
was able to get together outside of the
clinic and almost the entire team was able
to take part. Teamwork is essential to the
care administered by the cancer clinic and
this retreat has gone a long way toward
improving the already strong bonds shared
by the staff and shows the commitment our
group has to team play for excellent care,”
said Liliana Canadic, Manager Oncology,
Palliative Care and Ambulatory Care.
The teambuilding portion of the retreat
included a “Personality Dimensions”
workshop organized for the second time
by Lisa Bellon, Risk Manager. The workshop
gave the staff an opportunity to get to know
each other better while also providing a
way for everyone get to know their own
strengths and weaknesses. The retreat was
also a great way to welcome new employees
to the cancer clinic team.
A portion of the funds raised for the retreat
were generated through the sale of the
cancer clinic’s cookbook. The cookbook, the
clinic’s second, has been a very successful
fundraising tool for the clinic. It includes
recipes from staff, physicians, volunteers,
patients and family members. Funds raised
from the sale of the cookbook have also
helped sponsor the annual Cancer Clinic
Volunteer Pot Luck, a beautiful gathering
Every October, Occupational Therapists work to promote the profession of Occupational Therapy (OT) as
part of National Occupational Therapy month. This year at JBMH, the OT department was involved in
several initiatives to help promote occupational therapy, including a presentation to Notre Dame High School
students about the profession of OT. The OT’s also provided a review on transfer training safety with nursing
staff on various units at JBMH to coincide with the BPSO Falls Prevention initiative. RIGHT: The OT team back

JBMH is on the right track with best practice fall
prevention and injury reduction initiatives
The Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant Local Health
Integration Network (HNHB LHIN) is one of sixteen sites
across the province that has been given the opportunity
by the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO)
to become a Best Practice Spotlight Organization (BPSO).
During the candidacy period April 1, 2009 to March 31,
2012, participating organizations will share resources
and work together to implement and evaluate evidenced
based guidelines in our hospitals and community.
HNHB LHIN citizens, patients and health care providers
will benefit as RNAO Best Practice Guidelines (BPG) are
implemented in ten hospitals, the Community Care
Access Centre (CCAC), and a public health unit during
this 3-year initiative. Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital is
proud to be among the Service Provider Partner (SPP)
organizations taking part in this initiative.
The HNHB LHIN BPSO Candidate is focusing on three
RNAO Best Practice Guidelines: Prevention of Falls and Fall
Injuries in the Older Adult; Risk Assessment and Prevention
of Pressure Ulcers; and, Embracing Cultural Diversity in
Health Care: Developing Cultural Competence
“The “Prevention of Falls and Fall Injuries in the Older
Adult” BPG was implemented across all SPP organizations
during year 1 of our BPSO candidacy. We have just
submitted our second quarter mid intervention data and
our number of falls/1000 patient days and our number
of serious falls have both dropped, despite an increase
in total patient days. In addition, staff surveys using the
NHS Sustainability Model identifies that JBMH has a
high probability of sustaining our falls prevention and
injury reduction initiatives. The survey was able to pinpoint three items we need to work on to improve our
sustainability. This information will drive future work.
Great work by a great team – let’s keep it going!” said
Project Leader Evelyn Wilshaw, R.N., B.Sc.N., M.Sc.(T) JBMH
Chief, Professional Practice.
According to the HNHB LHIN, monitoring trends in this
way will demonstrate the impact of BPG implementation
over time and assist with the identification of better
practices across our LHIN. Utilization of a common
occurrence reporting system by all SPP organizations may
provide our LHIN with an exciting opportunity to establish
a LHIN-wide reporting system to monitor falls data on an
ongoing basis.
The Best Practice Champions at JBMH are holding a slogan development contest as part of the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario- Best Practice
“Prevention of Falls and Fall Injuries in the Older Adults” initiative. You can participate by developing a catchy slogan that reflects the association of medications and falls. So far, close to 30 slogans have been submitted. You can submit your slogan idea to Karimah Alidina, Professional Practice Educator, Rehabilitation and Complex Continuing Care Units at [email protected] by November 20. The winner of the best slogan will win a $ 10 Tim Horton’s gift card.

the
Joseph Brant
Memorial Hospital
and West Lincoln
Memorial Hospital
to explore clinical
program collaboration
opportunities
Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital (JBMH) and West Lincoln
Memorial Hospital (WLMH) have agreed to strengthen
their long standing relationship by further exploring
formal clinical program collaboration.
“The Clinical Collaborative Opportunities project, which
officially launched in October, will build on our combined
strengths and will provide a framework that will allow us
to continue our journey to excellence. Over the coming
months, we will engage management, staff and physicians
in a process that builds on our collective strengths and
challenges us to think creatively about how jointly
planning clinical services can better meet the needs of
our patients and communities,” said Eric Vandewall, JBMH
President and CEO.
Working with consultants from KPMG, a highly interactive
process has been designed where representatives across
both hospitals will have an opportunity to provide input
and share their ideas. A project committee has also been
established to oversee the project and provide guidance
and advice on the proposed collaboration opportunities.
This project will be a 3-phase process with plans to
present recommendations and findings to JBMH’s Board
of Governors in early 2011.
“I am extremely pleased with the direction we are going
and look forward to future discussions in the months
ahead,” said JBMH Board Chair Susan Busby.
“We are very excited about this opportunity to work
together with our colleagues at WLMH,” said JBMH Vice
President of Medical Affairs Dr. Dwight Prodger.
Calling this a big and important step for JBMH, Vandewall
added, “This process has been specifically designed
to allow us to come together – as a team – and put our
patients at the centre of what we do. With that shared
focus and commitment, I am confident that we can come
out of this process better, stronger and more innovative.”

Accreditation: JBMH is Cultivating Quality to
improve the care and services we provide
Accreditation Canada is a national organization
that sets best practice standards that provide
healthcare organizations with the opportunity
to talk with their peers about their strengths
and successes and to continue to focus on
quality improvement projects in every work
area. Healthcare organizations, like JBMH,
that participate in Accreditation Canada’s
accreditation programs are evaluating their
performance in all aspects of health care from
patient safety and ethics to staff training and
partnerships with patients and the community.
JBMH’s next survey by Accreditation Canada is
April 10-13, 2011.
This year the theme is “Cultivating Quality”. “Accreditation in April 2011 is a time for staff
to talk about their successes and provide more
opportunities for improvement in the care and
service we provide at JBMH,” says Mary MacLeod,
Vice President Patient Care Services and Chief
Nursing Executive and Accreditation Canada
Surveyor.

Enhanced patient safety and faster delivery with Diagnostic Imaging Repository (DI-r)
Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital has successfully gone live with archiving diagnostic images
and reports to a Diagnostic Imaging Repository (DI-r). This marks a key step towards integrating
electronic patient records for hospitals in southern Ontario.
The DI-r is a central image and report archive system, housed in London, Ontario, that connects
all PACS Systems in the participating hospitals within four Local Health Integration Networks (LHIN
1, 2, 3 and 4). The system allows clinicians to view a patient’s Diagnostic Imaging record when and
where they need it.
“This initiative results in a very significant enhancement to Patient Safety and more effective
and faster delivery of care for the patients of LHINs 3 and 4 who have partnered with LHINs 1 and
2 South Western Ontario (SWO). We are one of the early adopters of the eHealth Initiative along
with HHSC, Norfolk and Niagara Health System,” says Irene Chisholm, JBMH Manager, Information
Technology and Communication Services.
In the past, patients had to bring their DI information on CD disks from other facilities when
presenting at JBMH. Care Providers using the DI-r now have the ability to see the Patient’s complete
(combined) DI information from all participating hospitals.
“The success of this project was due to the combined efforts of Information Technology (IT) and
Diagnostic Imaging(DI) and our partner vendors GE, Philips, Lawson (HealthVision) and the DI-r
Project Management Office. The IT and DI departments worked very closely to first re-direct the DI
- ADT, Orders, Results and PACs images (originally from Meditech to Philips PACS) to our interface
engine creating a new flow through to Philips. Then staff created an additional set of interface
feeds to the DI-r,” Chisholm says.
A very significant effort of over 400 hours on the part of IT and DI staff were required to configure
and map the interface feeds and complete extensive quality checks on both the re-directed feed to
PACs and the new DI-r to ensure a quality, safe, accurate data base of Patient Information.
The Security Evaluation Checklist, Data Sharing Agreement and Privacy Agreement were all
completed prior to go-live. “Participation in the project reinforces JBMH’s commitment to LHIN eHealth initiatives and the
enhancement of safe quality care for our patients,” adds Chisholm.
Clinicians, radiologists and other caregivers at JBMH can be trained in the use of the DI-r viewer
application by contacting Marion Billyard at ext. 1319 or Helen Lamoureux at ext. 1282.
Surgical Safety Checklist (SSCL) is just one way JBMH shows
its commitment to providing safe care to all of its patients
Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital’s Surgical
Department offers a wide range of surgical
services including general surgery, orthopaedics,
opthalmology, ENT, plastics, oral surgery, urology,
gynaecology, vascular, and thoracic surgery.
Surgical staff are committed to providing safe
care, quality care and great service.“Excellent care
is about having a high functioning, committed
surgical team. Our surgeons, anaesthetists,
nurses and allied health professionals work as a
cohesive unit to ensure that the care they deliver
to you is top notch,” says Anne Marie MacDonald,
JBMH’s Director of Surgical Services.
As part of JBMH’s commitment to patient
care, the surgical department has implemented
procedures and protocols to improve efficiency
and safety measures. This includes fully
implementing the World Health Organization’s
Surgical Safety Checklist well before it was a
mandatory requirement. This checklist is being
administered 100 per cent of the time.
What is the Surgical Safety
Checklist (SSCL)?
The SSCL is a patient safety communication
tool that is used by a team of operating
room professionals (nurses, surgeons,
anesthesiologists, and others) to discuss
important details about a surgical case at three
distinct stages or phases during surgery: Preinduction (before the patient is put to sleep),
Time Out (just before the first incision), and
Debriefing (during or after surgical closure).
The SSCL is used to facilitate operating room
team discussion so that everyone is familiar
about the case.
In many ways, the surgical checklist is similar
to an airline pilot’s checklist used just before
take-off. It is a last minute check to make sure
everything is in working order, all equipment
is available, and everyone is ready to proceed.
Why are SSCLs important?
Operating room teams have many important
steps to follow in order to ensure a safe and
effective surgery for every patient, and the
SSCL is a useful tool that helps facilitate good
communication among the health care team.
Essentially, the checklist is about improving
overall teamwork – a critical factor in producing
positive clinical outcomes.
Why are hospitals publicly reporting the
SSCL indicator?
As part of the Ministry of Health and LongTerm Care’s public reporting of patient safety
indicators initiative, eligible hospitals are
legally required to post their SSCL compliance
percentages. This is a good thing for hospitals.
The public reporting of patient safety indicators
is about inspiring improved performance,
enhancing patient safety, and strengthening
the public’s confidence in Ontario’s hospitals.
SAFETY
MATTERS AT
JBMH
JBMH’s SSCL compliance
rate for April-June 2010
is 99.9% and for JulySeptember 2010 it is 99.8%.
This is strong evidence
that JBMH is on track in
ensuring safe surgical
services for its patients.

Caring for Carly – relieved father
offers his special thanks to ED staff for
caring for his daughter
“On Friday, November 5, 2010 I took my daughter Carly, age
15, to your Emergency Department. A short time earlier she had
been experiencing extreme abdominal pain and was vomiting.
She is not one to complain about minor stomach aches so I knew
something was seriously wrong with her which made our visit to
JBMH necessary.
The admitting staff was polite, caring and were trying to put my
daughter at ease. After providing her with a bag to throw up in,
we were asked to sit in the waiting room. My daughter was crying
due to the pain and embarrassed about having to throw up in the
waiting room. Your staff realized this and it wasn’t long before she
was asked to lie down on a bed.
Although all of the staff we met were excellent I would especially
like to make the management staff aware of the nurse named
‘Tara’ who looked after my daughter that night. Tara was caring,
professional and empathetic. We were in a room with several
elderly women – Nurse Tara was so kind and considerate to these
women and my daughter! Her professional approach and kindness
was really outstanding! I don’t know how many hours into her shift
she was, but at 2 a.m., I’m sure she must have been tired, yet you
wouldn’t have known it by her demeanor. She just seemed to want
to do more and more for her patients as time went on.
We were seen by a doctor and my daughter was able to receive
two shots of gravol and Advil and it worked wonders. We were
able to leave with an arrangement that someone would call in the
morning to arrange an ultra sound for her abdomen.
As promised, someone called in the morning and we returned,
again to meet with very kind, helpful staff. We were told that our
daughter's previous night's episode was probably due to a small
kidney stone having been passed.
Would you please compliment all of the staff, especially Nurse
Tara Weekes, for doing such a great job and showing kindness and
compassion under such difficult conditions.
Please rest assured that all of your work and kindness doesn’t go
unnoticed, and please keep up the good work. Many, many thanks
to all of you.”
Yours sincerely, Marty Crawford

JBMH Foundation Board of Directors Past Chair
Kevin Brady named Philanthropist of the Year
Kevin Brady has been named the 2010
Philanthropist of the Year by the Burlington
Community
Foundation.
Brady
was
honoured for his substantial gifts of time
and leadership as well as for monetary
contributions that have made a huge impact
and difference in our community. Brady was
presented with the award at the Burlington
Community Foundation Masquerade Ball
held earlier this month.
Brady has been an active volunteer for the
Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital Foundation
since 1999 when he was a member of the
Major Gifts team, helping to raise funds for
the capital campaign.
Brady and his wife Barb own and operate
Brady Financial Group founded in 1998.
Specializing in providing financial security
solutions for corporations, business owners
and individuals, the company has grown
into one of the largest and most reputable
independent financial services companies in
Southern Ontario.
With a deep commitment to Burlington,
Brady is actively involved with the Rotary,
the Hamilton/Burlington YMCA, Burlington
Hospice, United Way and Joseph Brant
Memorial Hospital.
Today, Brady is a member of the 2010-2011
Foundation Board of Directors as well as a
member of the JBMHF Ambassadors Council
Executive.
Part of a family that is passionate about
giving back to their community, Kevin and
Barb live in Burlington with their three
children.
JBMH Board member Marianne Meed Ward elected to City Hall
Marianne Meed Ward, member of the
Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital Board of
Governors, has been elected to City Hall.
Meed Ward bested incumbent Peter Thoem
to claim the Ward 2 seat. She is one of three
new councillors joining mayor-elect Rick
Goldring on the seven-member council.
As a mother of three, Meed Ward has had
an impressive career as a journalist and
owner of her own communications business.
Meed Ward has lived in Burlington since 2000
when she, along with husband Peter Ward,
a fundraising executive with World Vision
Canada, moved here to raise their family.
In addition to her work as a columnist with
the Toronto Sun and regular appearances on
Vision-Television and the Michael Coren cable
talk show, Meed Ward is a strong supporter
of Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital.
"My husband was nursed back to health at
Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital after a lifethreatening illness. Our 9-year-old twins,
Nicholas and Alexandra, were born at the
hospital. Every member of my family has
relied on Joseph Brant Memorial hospital for
care. JoBrant hospital has been there for our
family when we needed it. So I welcomed
the opportunity to give back as a volunteer
member of the Board of Governors. When
I joined JBMH, our hospital was going
through a challenging time. I hoped to use my
background in communications to engage
our community in making the hospital the
best it can be. We have made quality care
and patient safety our focus, which includes
a long overdue upgrade of our facilities.
The greatest reward for me has been to
see the community rally behind our hospital
expansion, making it our city’s top priority.
By working together we will ensure our
hospital is there not only for our families, JBMH Board of Governors member Marianne Meed Ward will
be sworn in as Ward 2 Councillor on December 1, 2010
but for our children’s families, too."
The was AMAZING! The first annual Amazing Bed race raises over $80,000 for
Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital and the Rotary Club of Burlington North
Chris McGarvey, President Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital Foundation (far left) accepts a
cheque for over $43,000 from TEAM SCOTIABANK at the Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital
Amazing Bed Race on September 26.
When Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital and the Rotary Club
of Burlington North first talked about organizing a bed race in
Burlington, they had a vision for a fun and exciting event that
would bring out community spirit. And that vision was realized
on September 26 on Brant Street when the inaugural year of
the Amazing Bed Race exceeded all expectations.
Thirty-two teams participated in the race and the streets
were filled with fans and spectators.
From tooth fairies dressed in white tutus to space cadets
dressed to suit their metallic spaceship bed, it was wonderful
to see the spirit as teams raced, two at a time, in their decorated
beds and costumes.
Congratulations to the Halton Regional Police Services for
winning the final race and becoming our Amazing Bed Race
Champions and also for having the “Best Decorated Bed.”
Honourable mentions go to our 2nd place team, the Burlington
Professional Firefighters Association; and our 3rd place team,
the Burlington Orthotic Centre.
A special thank you goes to our other champions, TEAM
SCOTIABANK, who brought spirit and cheer along with a
donation for over $43,000 towards the Amazing Bed Race. You
are amazing!
A big thank you also goes out to DenBok Landscaping and Design
Ltd. and Bozek Orthodontics for their significant contributions
towards this event. Both companies raised approximately $5,000
through donations for the Amazing Bed Race.
The success of an event like this is the result of the
overwhelming support that we receive from our community
and many corporate sponsors. Special thanks to Karen Paul
Realty, Joelle’s, Christopher Terrace Retirement Home, and
our many other sponsors, donors, volunteers, spectators and
participants that made this event such a success.
Another special thanks goes to Killin’ Time Band, Hamilton
City Roller Girls and the Burlington Student Theatre for keeping
us entertained throughout the day.
The 2nd Annual Amazing Bed Race will be on Sunday,
September 25, 2011 and promisees to be an even bigger event!

Brant Memorial Hospital. In lieu of the
traditional “clinking of the glasses” Megan
and Chad asked guests at their wedding to

raising $750 for the hospital.
“From the start of our wedding planning,
we knew we wanted Jo Brant to play an
important part in our celebration. We hold
close personal ties to the hospital; it’s our

there, and the hospital has helped many of

“We thought our wedding would be a

hearts. We asked our guests to make a donation when they wanted us to

this donation towards the hospital’s redevelopment plans. We hope that our
gift will help to inspire others to give generously to JBMH, too.”
