Going “Over There”

The photograph above was shot at the Belvidere train
depot in early May 1917 as U.S. Army soldiers boarded a
train to go to war. Their path from basic training to the front
in France passed through Belvidere as some said goodbye
to family for the last time and others said farewell as they
would return a year or more later.
Men and their families assembled in the warm late spring
sunlight as they moved about in drab green wool uniforms
with the high collars and long sleeves. On their feet they
wore Government Issue hobnail boots and their legs were
wrapped to the knees. On their backs they carried packs
that they were told contained everything needed to fight the
Germans. They learned later what soldiers through the ages
had learned when they went to war, that not everything they
needed would be provided by a generous government.
These men rode by train from Belvidere until they
reached New York. From there they traveled south to
Norfolk or other eastern ports to board troop ships for the
long ride across the Atlantic Ocean. For most of these
men this was their great life adventure and many of them
approached World War I with eyes agape at what and who
they would see. Many were so naïve.
Many of these men heard one song flowing through
their ear or they hummed to themselves when alone in their
bunks or sang openly when they marched to the front, the
song George M. Cohen wrote, “Over There.” In addition
to Cohen, Nora Bayes broke their hearts with her recording
of the song and Enrico Caruso thrilled others as he intoned
the stirring melody. Yet, those who walked in that world of
fantasy were often the first that were killed.
Many that experienced the trench warfare of World
War I told heart-rending stories of long days and weeks
fearing the onslaught while nothing happened. Then in an
instant, the hordes of Huns attacked across no-man’s land
with repeating rifles and machine guns. Some appeared as
ghosts from within the aura of the mustard gas that belched
from their trenches or was spread from the floating bi-wing
airplanes that swept down from above and propelled their
gas of death across the riddled field.
The men fell like mowed thistles with the only benefit
being that their death was fast and decisive with little
agony. But of course, that assessment was given by those
that survived and few if any that were submerged within the
cloud of gas ever survived. Equipment was the problem
because it often failed.
Gas masks were leaky and seldom adhered tightly to
the cheeks and forehead to provide an airtight seal. Many
that returned from Germany and France after surviving a
mustard gas attack complained for years later of residual
ailments that were the secondary result of being gassed. The
author John Dos Passos was one of those men.
World War I was the first modern war that swept around
the world. There was fighting across Europe and spreading
into the old Ottoman Empire. Fighting also occurred in
Russia after the Communist revolution in 1917. There was
fighting across India and southern Asia and into China and
Japan. The North and South American continents were
spared warfare though American soldiers fought during the
last two years of the war.
A little more than a year before this photograph was
shot, on April 16, 1917, the Congress, at the request of
President Woodrow Wilson, declared war on Germany.
Prior to this declaration, the United States practiced a policy
of isolationism that meant the United States chose not to
become directly involved in the world conflict. America
did provide assistance with material and arms, but no men
fought until after the formal declaration was signed.
The men pictured here were nicknamed, “Doughboys.”
The name emerged from the Mexican/American War in
1846 and 1847 because of the dusty white clay that covered
the American soldiers and adhered to their skin. However,
it was later during World War I when the title was affixed
to those that fought with General John Pershing in the
American Expeditionary Forces. However, after World War
I use of the term “Doughboy” was exchanged for “Dogface”
or “GI” used in World War II to describe the American
infantry soldier.
American forces entered World War I about the time
the final result was in little doubt. These men shown above
were mustered out to Germany and France to repel what
was to be expected as the German Spring Offensive of 1918.
The offensive reached to within 75 miles of Paris before the
forces were repelled and this was followed by the Hundred
Day offensive and the ultimate allied victory.
The collapse of adversarial forces began in September
1918 with the armistice of Bulgaria. Later by November,
the final armistice of World War I, for symbolic reasons,
occurred in the Palace of Versailles outside Paris. The
documents of surrender were to be signed at the 11th hour of

Health Board
Contracts Proceed

In spite of a request for a hiring freeze by the county,
Boone County’s Board of Public Health (BCBPH) approved
two contracts this week. The first was to place under
contract an employee of the State of Illinois, Ray Empereur,
who will watch over, mentor and otherwise sign necessary
paper work and attend meetings with the new assistant
Administrator Stephanie Seaworth, RN.
Seaworth will oversee the day-to-day operations of
the Boone County Health Department until she is able to
demonstrate to the state that she has the requisite experience
to hold the job of administrator.
The situation is considered at a conclusion by the board,
since the BCBPH has total authority over hiring for the
health department. Members of the county board decided to
hire Empereur, who lives in Winnebago County, for $12,000
plus mileage instead of going to the $10,000 expense of
doing a national search or hiring the second applicant for
the position who was, according to Allen Sisson, already
qualified for the job.
A special meeting was held before the full county board
meeting on Monday night, where Sisson, Dr. Kent Hess,
Seaworth and Empereur answered many in-depth questions
after they were made aware that the state had rejected
Seaworth’s qualifications according to state statute.
Sisson said the board had misunderstood the statute
requirements and made the contract with Seaworth after
interviewing two applicants who had heard of the opening
by word of mouth.
No search was done, according to Sisson, either locally
or nationally and applications from a previous search in 2008
were not looked at. “We felt that Seaworth’s experience and
enthusiasm was just what the county needed,” Sisson said.
They made it clear that the absence of Boone County
Board Representative Brad Rightnowar (District 2) was
a problem during the process in keeping the lines of
communication open with the county. “He attended only
one meeting during this process,” said Sisson.
“I am really disappointed to hear that our representative
was not in attendance,” said County Board Representative
Kenny Freeman (District 3).

World War I was officially ended.
Legend has it that two nights after the armistice was
signed the news reached America and spread down the streets
of Belvidere. Legend also claimed that revelers marched
down State Street when word of the armistice reached
town, the largest employer, the National Sewing Machine
Company closed the factory for the following day.
It was further claimed by some who saw the parade
and celebration that revelers and rowdies assembled on
the State Street Bridge and were said to have lit sticks of
dynamite and thrown them into the Kishwaukee River. As
the explosives sailed through the air with some exploding,
the concussion of those sticks that blew near buildings was
such that windows were blown out. No one survived to
today to declare who if any revelers were arrested for their
mayhem.

Dear Voters - I first want to say “Thank You’’ for all
your support these past 4 years that I have served as your
Alderman here in Ward 1. It has been an honor and a privilege
to represent you and your interests for the city of Belvidere.
My campaign had not been an easy one, there were a great
many things said about me that were not accurate or even
remotely true. Having said that I hope that Clint Morris will
do the right thing and represent Ward 1 with respect, honor
and dignity, which this position requires.
I am proud of the work that I have accomplished these
past 4 years. We are just a hair’s breath away from getting
passenger rail here in Belvidere. Which I believe will
mean more jobs for everyone here in town. The brand new
SwedishAmerican/ Belvidere Hospital opened up this past
April 6th. These two items were my most important priority
as your Alderman! I had no hidden agenda’s, the only thing
I ever fought for was to improve the quality of life here in
Belvidere for everyone, that’s it.
I am looking forward to being a private citizen again,
however I am still the City Chairman for the Republican
Party here in Boone County as well as being a Precinct
Committeeman for Ward 1. I will make myself available
to anyone who wishes to give me his or her thoughts and
suggestions on how we can
improve our great City of

On April 7, voters sent a clear message – change is
coming. This is a message that the leadership of the Boone
County Republican Party had better take heed of. This
past election cycle, the leadership of the Boone County
Republican Party chose to protect the interests of a few
select individuals and the public offices that they hold at the
expense of the needs and interests of the citizens of Boone
County. This past election cycle, Boone County voted
Democrat in the Presidential race, came within 800 votes of
losing the County Treasurer’s office barely held on to three
County Board seats and now, in the municipal elections, has
lost one City office, one Township office and was only able
to hold on to the Mayor’s office by the slimmest of margins.
The prized possession of the Party, the office of Mayor of
Belvidere, was nearly lost to an Independent candidate who
lacked even the most basic of qualifications to hold such
an office! The Party is in trouble of losing its status as the
dominant political party in Boone County and to retain its
dominance three things must occur.
First, the Boone County Republican Party needs new
leadership. The current Chairman is void of the skills needed
to sustain the Party’s dominance in Boone County politics
and he should be replaced in order to prevent any further
decline of the Party’s membership, loss of elected offices
and its dominance within the County.
Secondly, because it has become focused on a select few
public offices and individual office holders its membership
base has shrunk. Candidates who previously sought County,
Municipal, Township and Precinct offices as Republicans
now run under the banner of the Independent Party. The
Party needs to refocus its attention on the citizens – the ones
that live on Main Street in order to regain its base of support,
and potential future candidates, from among the citizens of
Boone County.
And thirdly, it needs to move beyond the old ways of
governance. Its membership is comprised of both men and
women, but has a woman ever led the Party? There are
many women among the Party membership who have the
skills and ability to lead the Party. Two who come to mind
are Cathy Ward and Patricia Zickert. Studies have proven
that women make better leaders of organizations where
interpersonal skills are more important than brawn. The
Party has plenty of brawn, but has failed to take advantage
of the skills that are needed to promote, nurture and sustain
the Party and its membership, skills that women in general
posses.
Change is coming to Boone County in small measured
steps. But change in the leadership of the Boone County
Republican Party needs to take place before the next cycle
of elections, before it loses its status as the dominant
political party in Boone County and surely before the current
leadership leads the Party to its grave.

Welcome to the 21st Century
Community residents have many methods to define their
community to themselves and to others. When the cities
of Geneva, Rockford, or DeKalb come to mind myriad
images can be mentioned to identify these communities.
Geneva could remind some of the Third Street shopping
corridor or Delnor Hospital.
If Rockford enters a conversation the three major
hospitals, the expansive development on the east side and
the Rock River might come to mind.
Before last week, if Belvidere was mentioned the
Boone County Fair and the city murals could distinguish
Belvidere from other cities. However now, Belvidere is
the home of the newest full-service hospital in the region
with the Grand Opening of the SwedishAmerican Medical
Center of Belvidere.
Last Monday, this community entered the 21st Century
with a medical facility that adds a new certification of
value to Belvidere that had been absent for 10 years. In
1999 when St. Joseph’s Hospital was closed and no option
was found to keep the facility open, Belvidere and Boone
County entered a fallow period as the area tried to redefine
itself. Many who live here today mark their involvement
with the city according to St. Joseph’s Hospital as where
they were born.
Though there was growth and development during that
decade, for many here, much was missing. The community
had no full-service hospital and anyone needing care had
to rely on a siren and an ambulance to deliver them to St.
Anthony Hospital before they died.
All of this has now changed.
Steps taken to reach this new point were made with
the hard work of many. The vision and willingness to
accept risk was forged by the Chief Executive Officer of
SwedishAmerican Medical Centers in Rockford, Dr. Bill
Gorski. He and his assistant, Don Daniels, general manager
of SwedishAmerican Medical Center of Belvidere, have
worked long hours planning calculated steps to reach their
goal.
Part of the wisdom some CEO’s have to warrant their
salary is to imagine a vision and to persuade talented
people to solve problems and to shepherd that vision from
creation to completion. Dr. Gorski surrounded himself
with skilled people who embraced his vision to make his
dream occur.
But Dr. Gorski was only part of the equation. The
other vital assets included the Belvidere City Council and
Belvidere Mayor Frederic Brereton.
When St. Joseph’s Hospital closed in 1999 some
local merchants and elected officials solicited help from
Springfield to calculate a method that could have kept the
facility open. However, OSF, the owner of the hospital was
committed to closing the facility to make their Rockford
St. Anthony Hospital even more valuable by expanding
their market share.
St. Joseph’s Hospital was sold in 1999 for $1 for the site
and the buildings. The real goal of the sale was realized
when the buyer signed a contract that denied the site from
ever being used as a surgi-center or hospital.
Efforts were made to redefine the property as an
extended-care facility, but those efforts failed. One man in
the neighborhood aroused public opposition and support
among members of City Council that led to the one effort
to redevelop the property being thwarted.
The developer wanted to erect condominiums on the
vacant portion of the tract, but neighbors wanted the city
to require the developer to obtain a performance bond
that would have obligated him to remodel and open the
old hospital building before the condominiums were
developed. A legal opinion led city legislators to conclude,
the city could not force the developer to buy a performance
bond on a private development. The neighborhood won
and the icon that was St. Josephs’ Hospital remains a site
fit only to harbor gang graffiti. Is this a use the opposition
envisioned?
The SwedishAmerican Medical Center in Belvidere is
not finished and maybe it will remain a work-in-progress.
The facility now has new emergency bays, a physical
rehabilitation lab, a full-service laboratory and imaging
center supporting 55 private patient rooms and a sleep
laboratory. Later this year they plan to offer a women’s
center and late in 2010 they expect to open one of three
planned day-surgery theatres.
Dr. Gorski said at last week’s Grand Opening, “We
are here for the long haul,” and that was affirmed after
SwedishAmerican Medical Centers of Rockford spent in
excess of $21 million to remodel and refurbish the former
Highland Hospital building into a state-of-the-art fullservice medical care facility. OSF did nothing in Belvidere
and instead of investing into the community, OSF bilked
the community until their sister facility in Rockford
expanded to meet their corporate goals. Religious entities
can also exhibit a cynical approach to community needs.
Thanks to hard work, dedication and the investment
of many Belvidere is now a part of the 21st Century. The
future never before looked this bright as Belvidere and
Boone County residents move ahead with the actual and
the subtle understanding that they again have a medical
facility to manage their needs.

did another county representative, Anthony Dini (District
1) and other members of the Health and Human Services
Committee. In the end, County Administrator Ken Terrinoni
pointed out that the county had no say in the hiring practices
at the health department.
“The horse is out of the barn at this point,” Terrinoni
said. “I would suggest the county look into why the statute
does not accept the administrative experience [Seaworth]
has.”
At the board meeting Seaworth read a letter into the
record indicating the final decision of the Board of Health.
That was the last word on the issue.
The county also announced a hiring freeze for all
departments, asking in addition for all employees to take
four unpaid days off. Leading by example was Finance
Committee Chairman Karl Johnson who he felt should give
up payments for four-and-a-half meetings as a good-faith
gesture.
Department heads were told that if they could not do
without the personnel or rehiring when people retired or left
their jobs or were otherwise no longer employed, that they
could take the option of finding other ways to makes cuts.
County Administrator Terrinoni said the departments
had already “found” $300,000 and were being encouraged
to find another $125,000 if at all possible.

According to Illinois law, any incumbent or candidate
has until May 4 to file a request for a Discovery Recount.
If such a request follows, the candidate challenging the
official results will select five precincts they want to have
recounted.
On a predetermined day, the clerk would reopen those
precinct reports with the actual ballots. A tape would be
rerun from the precinct to determine if the disc matches
what was reported election night. Then the clerk and her
staff would hand feed every ballot through the machine to
obtain a second count. The total found on election night
then would be compared with the new tally found when the
ballots were again hand fed through the voter machine.
If the recount process matches the report from election
night or if not and the candidate still wants to challenge the
official count, they would have to file a lawsuit in the 17th
Circuit Court asking a judge to decide if the election tally
and the official voter count was accurate.
A number of those involved in these tight races had
earlier indicated they would seek a Discovery Recount. Mr.
Falkenstein and Ms. Helnore had both indicated they might
seek a recount. Ms. Schrader and Ms. Gloria had both also
indicated they would seek a recount if the result of the voter
canvas did not materially change.
With the final voter results of the April 7 election certified,
there remain steps any candidate or incumbent might take if
they still believe the actual total count was not accurately
calculated. In the days remaining the final deadline of May
4 provides them with ample time to analyze and to decide
what they might do.

The official results of the county voter canvas were made
public in an elaborate process that occurred in the Boone
County Board meeting room on Thursday. In addition to
Boone County Clerk Pam McCullough and Gary Ingelson
of Governmental Business Systems of Lisle that distributed
the voting machine used in the county being present, Boone
County Board President Bob Wahlberg and County State’s
Attorney Michelle Courier were also present.
The event occurred in part because three absentee ballots
had been received after the voting was finished on Election
Day April 7.
Ms. McCullough took two precincts, the eighth and 14th
in Belvidere that had been randomly chosen by the Illinois
Election Board, to be recounted and have their results used
as a test. The results of that recount had only one ballot in
question.
According to Mr. Ingelson, on Tuesday April 7, one
ballot in Belvidere Precinct 8 was jammed in the voting
machine and was not officially counted. According to Ms.
McCullough, the election judges had not recognized there
was a problem with that one ballot not being read.
With the new tally run from both precincts, the three
remaining absentee ballots were counted. On Wednesday,
April 8, three ballots arrived at the County Clerk’s Office
that was postmarked before Election Day. Two of those
ballots were from Belvidere precincts while the other was
from one of the Poplar Grove precincts.

Helps People
Learn to Read

The Internet is the reason given for the recent downturn
in the popularity of newspaper reading. However, the story
might be more complicated than that. According to The
Literacy Council’s executive director, John Hurley, more
than 40,000 people in the area are deemed as having below a
5th-grade reading level, leaving them unable to understand
a daily newspaper.”
That figure is gauged by statistics from studies performed
by universities and national studies that “extrapolate” area
statistic from the national numbers. Hurley says, “There is
no reason to think our situation is any different.”
The lack of reading skills leaves them in a spot when
trying to read instructions on a prescription bottle or
attempting to fill out a job application. Hurley defines the
problems as “things that would make normal daily life more
difficult than for the rest of us who read above that level.”
Although many “can get by with pictures,” says Hurley,
who added that context and help from family and friends
are often used as well, the goal of The Literacy Council is
to “take people from wherever they are, 5th-grade, lower or
higher, and get them up to 9th-grade level,” and to the point
where they can enter a GED program.
The adult clients at The Literacy Council range in ages
from 16-90, and they get reading tutoring in three formats:
1-on-1 tutoring with a trained adult volunteer; adult classes
(small-group instruction); and the family literacy program.
Through the programs, the council helps about 4,000 people
annually, about 10 percent of the people projected to need
better reading skills.
In the 1-on-1 tutoring, volunteers with 15 hours of inclass training are paired with an adult learner. Currently 23
pairs meet in Boone County at the Ida Public Library (320
N. State in Belvidere), but there is a waiting list of adults
waiting to be paired with tutors. The family literacy program
is a partnership with Washington School, Community
School District #100, Ida Public Library and PACT (Parent
and Child Together). Families at-risk are identified by
Washington School and also meet at the library. At present
20 families are attending the family literacy program in
Belvidere.

Neighbors Seek
Help in Plotte
Matter

Boone County Board heard from Plotte Quarry about their
desire to petition the courts for a change to the Settlement
Agreement with the county to move their operation site at
Irene Road away from area subdivisions and closer to the
entrance of the facility.
Neighbors were informed of the action when Plotte
contacted neighbors to give them the opportunity to attend
the board meeting and offer their comments.
One of those neighbors, Jack Radcliffe celebrated
the business and said they had been generally, very good
neighbors. He had one concern to be addressed; the lowering
of the current berm that blocks his view from his property.
Plotte purchased the property that enabled them to build
an entrance to Irene Road. This entrance allowed closure of
the Townhall Road entrance.
Radcliffe has asked about the reduction of the berm. “I
want to commend Plotte’s for the work that they’ve done,”
said Radcliffe. “We want to thank them for working with us
when the previous state’s attorney and county board passed
over us to make a settlement, not allowing us a say.”
Of the berm he objects to, Radcliffe continued. “The
berm makes it feel like a prison as high as it is,” Radcliffe
said. “I think the county should consider reducing the
setbacks to berms to the same thing as residents are required
to do; 25 feet. It is very, very steep, built on a one-to-one
ratio.”
Warren Fuller, attorney for Plotte replied that the berm
height was intended to reduce the amount of dust to area
homes and business.
“We built to the plan that was in the settlement
agreement,” said Fuller. The county building inspector,
Drew Bliss, confirmed that information.
Contributing to the discussion, State’s Attorney Michelle
Courier noted that further research indicated that the county
has to agree to any changes per the agreement prior to a
court hearing on changes to that document.
“According to the settlement, agreement can’t take
place unless Paragraph L directives [as written], require the
approval of the county board,” Courier said. “If the board
wants to make it contingent on the berming they can do
that.”
County Representatives Karl Johnson (District 2) and
Marshall Newhouse (District 1) felt the issue could be dealt
with separately and the berm question should be returned
to the county board’s Planning, Zoning and Building
Committee.
Fuller indicated that Plotte would be amenable to that
solution, noting that moving forward with the location
change for mining operations was time sensitive as it is
seasonal work.
“We are willing to appear at a hearing if people would
like to address that,” Fuller said.
Moving, lowering and building berms, Fuller said, is
not as simple or inexpensive as it seems. “The berms are
essentially storage for topsoil,” he said.
The company intends to landscape them in the future to
further reduce dust and noise issues.

Poplar Grove Workers
Choose a “Bargaining Agent”

Six of Poplar Grove’s seven employees have voted 6-0
to unionize, with the Operating Engineers, Local #150 of
Rockford serving as their bargaining agent.
Village board members discussed that development in an
executive session Monday night and upon emerging voted
4-0 to delay approval of a salary increase until a collective
bargaining agreement is reached with the unit.
The Finance Committee had recommended a 3 percent
cost-of-living adjustment for all employees, subject to
revenue projections being met.
“We’re waiting for correspondence from the union as to
where we go from here,’’ President Roger Day said.
Board members did not discuss the proposed
unionization.
Public Works Director Jeff Reininger, one of the six
voting for representation, said after the meeting he had
no comment on why workers thought such a move was
necessary.
But Mayor Day said, “They just want to be protected.’’
He had no further comment.
Officials of the union, which is affiliated with the AFLCIO, could not be reached for comment.
Before the board went into executive session to discuss
several topics, Mayor-elect Brad Rightnowar, who will take
the oath of office May 11, tried to obtain permission to sit
in on the meeting. He asked for a motion to that effect, but
none was offered.
The board during the private gathering talked about the
flooding of a basement in the Bel-Air subdivision and the
long-pending Change Order No. 21 at the south sewage
treatment plant.
After reconvening publicly, trustees voted 4-0 to contact
surrounding communities to see how they handle such
flooding problems. The village’s insurance carrier already
has said it isn’t Poplar Grove’s fault, though the property
owner, William Brandenburg, disagrees.
Brandenburg earlier said he probably would wind up
spending $5,000 to clean up his property and wanted to be
reimbursed for the expense.
“I don’t want to go to court and don’t think you guys
want to, either,’’ he said. “But I think I have a case.’’
Reininger said there
wasn’t any blockage in
village sewer lines, nor was
there any equipment failure.
Additionally, the board
voted 4-0 to deny Change
Order 21 for the south
treatment plant expansion
project and deal with it
through mediation.
The change order sought
$237,480 for additional
expenses incurred by the
contractor, Aquatec.
Company president Dick
Ryan appeared at the board’s
March 9 meeting and
explained why the project
was so far behind schedule.
“The construction season
was fraught with many,
many rainfalls of record
proportion,’’ he said. “We
lost a lot of time.’’
The expansion was
scheduled to be finished in
September 2008. Now it’s
on target to be finished later
this month.
“These delays pushed us
into winter construction,’’
Ryan said in March. There
were excessive snowfalls,
28 inches in December
when we usually get five or
six inches. We had to reduce
our productivity. Delays
cost us money.’’
The

option
discussed privately by the
board Monday night was
taking legal action against
the company.

Brandenburg quipped, returning briefly to the problem of
flooding at his condominium.
While no one responded to his request, it was agreed
the matter of naming village hall should be placed on the
board’s May 11 agenda.

“We have never had this problem before,” Belvidere/
Boone County Food Pantry Executive Director Linda Clark
told the Boone County Board Wednesday. “Since January
we have lost pledges because of the economic situation, and
now we’ve lost stores. We set aside $400 a month for food.
It doesn’t sound like much, but we have been able to buy
quite a bit. Some stores that gave three or four days a week
are down to two.”
The pantry is open to any one in need of food and other
services and is located at 200 South Fifth Street in Capron.
The pantry is a 501C (3) agency, and a registered agent
with the Attorney General’s office with permits from the
Boone County Health Department as well as the Northern
Illinois Food Bank in St. Charles and the Hunger Connection
in Rockford.
From their website, they also indicate their affiliations
and services:
“We are also a member of the Bright Horizons Rotary
Club. We are a registered agency with the Better Business
Bureau and our organization is a member of the Belvidere
Chamber of Commerce.”
“We serve all of Boone County as well as agencies outside
of our county. For instance, we opened our facility to RAMP
agencies in detail, Rockford, and Belvidere. Recently we
set up four disabled men in a house to live independently
for the first time in their adult lives. Our facility provided
everything including the food in their cabinets, laundry soap,
all kinds of nonfood products, sheets, blankets, pillows, lots
of furniture, washer and dryer, just to name a few things.”
Currently the desperate need is for food. The pantry is
down to only a one week supply of food. Serving nearly
2,000 people in the county, many on a weekly basis, makes
that an emergency situation.
“We are not funded by federal, state or local governments
at all,” Clark said. “I am constantly asking and I can’t
understand why...these are your people. We have people
we serve two or three months until they get on their feet.
We have a computer set up for people to look for jobs. We
get them appropriate clothes to wear to an interview and we
help them with their resume. We have not had a time like
this when we have not had any reserves on our shelves.”
Clark continued, “Anyone who would like to make a

in Capron.
County Representative Marshall Newhouse (District 1)
asked if the pantry had any need for the other items such as
clothing and non-food items. Not at this time,” said Clark.
“We are blessed with paper products, shampoo; we have a
semi-truck coming in tomorrow full of paper products all the
way from Indiana. We have even called Feed the Children
and all they can send us, believe it or not, is candy. That’s
nationally...it is very scary.”
Clark agreed that financial contributions are just as
important as food products. “We can purchase bulk so
inexpensively; we can get 20 pounds of flour for .25 cents.
It is just amazing.”

Poplar Grove Trustees

Speeding problems along Waco Drive in the Bel-Air
subdivision at Poplar Grove may be the result of neighbors
not paying attention to the way they’re driving.
But dealing with the matter, which some residents
believe is quite serious, has been laid at the feet of the
village board.
The speed limit in that neighborhood is 25 mph. Poplar
Grove President Roger Day said some residents he met with
claim motorists’ speeds can reach 50 mph.
“There’s even speeding during the cold, icy weather,’’
one resident told the board Monday night. “Their attitude is
they don’t have to worry about how fast they drive getting
to work in the morning and getting home for cocktails at
night.’’
There needs to be speed limit signs leading out of the
subdivision, the board was told.
A woman said Children at Play signs were replaced with
snow route signs before the 2008-09 winter and need to be
returned.
More patrol by the Boone County Sheriff’s deputy
assigned to Poplar Grove was suggested, with Mayor Day
saying the writing of a few $150 speeding tickets might
make a difference.
“Blowing through stop signs’’ was cited by another
resident as an ongoing problem. “They just don’t care about
the safety of others,’’ he said.
Sheriff’s Deputy Brett Banaszak, who patrols the village,
said the key is for residents to get the make, model and
license plate number of offending vehicles.
While one resident said he didn’t see a sheriff’s car in
Bel-Air very often, Banaszak said he drives through there at
least six times on each of his 12-hour shifts.
Most agreed educating the motoring public would go a
long way, that speeders would agree to slow down if they
were more aware of the hazard they were creating.
Also Monday the board heard resident Don Ellingson
encourage the village to celebrate Poplar Grove’s 150th
birthday in October. He said there was a celebration 50 years
ago, on the village’s 100th birthday in 1959, when a time
capsule was buried downtown near the military monument.
“Oct. 20 is the anniversary date,’’ he said.
Ellingson said he would be happy to help plan the party,
but that he did not want to chair the effort.
President Day said after the meeting the village was
platted 150 years ago, adding it actually was incorporated
in 1895, meaning it was 100 years old in 1995. But he
remembered the celebration in 1959 as he watched the time
capsule being buried downtown.
\In other action the board:
• Approved the 2009-10 budget of $3.2 million, down
from the current spending plan, effective May 1.
“Note
that
it
is

balanced
budget,’’
said Trustee Robert Fry, a member of the
Finance Committee that recently erased a $290,000 deficit
and actually projected a surplus of $276,000 when the new
fiscal year ends April 30, 2010.
• Tabled action on the proposed wind turbine ordinance
until the May 11 meeting.
Trustee Kris Campbell said he would not vote in favor
of it the way it currently is written. He thought the setback
should be less than 2,000 feet and that the distance between
a turbine and any building should be less than proposed.
President Day said he would prefer to wait until Trustee
George Fowler, who was absent Monday night, could be at
the meeting.
The outgoing board will deal with old business May 11,
before the new board takes the oath of office.
• Voted 4-0 to adopt the village’s first comprehensive
plan, a guideline to future growth in Poplar Grove.
• Delayed action on Countryside Mall’s request that
an alleyway behind the development’s main building be
dedicated to the village.
Fry wanted to know how much revenue the village would
lose if that property was removed from the tax rolls.
President Day said the alley has become a major
thoroughfare for traffic. He added that he would get a survey
of the affected property so everyone would know how much
area was involved.

Take a Volunteer Vacation
With budget cutbacks across every segment of society,
more and more public programs will be depending on
volunteers to keep projects going. If sitting beachside or
sleeping in a hammock isn’t for you, consider taking a
volunteer vacation this summer.
On a volunteer vacation, you won’t be paid for your work.
In fact, you’ll be responsible for your own transportation to
the site and may pay for your food and lodging while there.
Lodging can vary from a sleeping bag on the ground to a
shelter or a motel, and you might be cooking your own food,
depending on the program. Still, a volunteer vacation can be
a way to help others, and some of your expenses might be
tax deductible.
Charity Guide [www.charityguide.org] has an extensive
section on volunteer vacations. You can volunteer at a camp
for children with special needs, conduct environmental
research, track whales during migration, help to rehab
rescued animals at wildlife sanctuaries, act as photojournalist
in any number of worthy causes or help preserve historic
trains and railroads, among dozens of choices.
The American Hiking Society [www.americanhiking.
org] concentrates on building and maintaining trails across
the country. Put together a crew and sign up for a week-long
project.
Wilderness Volunteers [www.wildernessvolunteers.org]
is a nonprofit that promotes volunteer service in wild lands
and public parks. Read the information carefully to gauge
your fitness level before signing up.
By working with Habitat for Humanity [www.habitat.
org] you could have the opportunity to help build a home
for a local family.
Check Volunteer Match [www.volunteermatch.org] for
the most up-to-the-minute volunteer needs. This is the site
to check if you have time off and want to volunteer locally
for a day or a week, but can’t afford to go away.
Do your research before you pick a program. Many
projects are ongoing, and you might not see a lot of progress
during the time you’re there -- you’ll be picking up where a
previous group of volunteers left off.
You don’t necessarily need to travel overseas to find
work that needs to be done. There’s plenty of need right
here. You might even find work to be done in your own town
or state, and not have the expense of leaving home.
The Hidden Costs of Major Appliances
The true price of a major appliance is what it costs to
take out of the store, plus what it costs to run it once you get
it home. Since appliances can account for a hefty portion of
your monthly power bill, the lower price of an appliance on
sale might not be much of a bargain if you end up paying
higher electric bills for the next 10 years.
Before you buy a new major appliance, look at the
energy-rating info. Laws require that manufacturers put
Energy Guide labels on all major appliances. The labels
must include the results of independent laboratory tests
and information such as the capacity and estimated annual
electrical consumption for a particular model, as well
as for comparable models. EnergyStar appliances must
additionally be much more efficient than other average

The U.S. Department of Energy has a Web site loaded
with energy-saving information. At www.energysavers.gov,
click on Appliances and Electronics, and look for Estimating
Appliance and Home Electronic Energy Use. Apply the
formula to calculate the energy used by your current
appliances and electronics, as well as any you intend to buy.
Remember to add in your “phantom” loads: appliances that
use electricity even when they’re turned off. Examples of
this are televisions and computers. (To turn them completely
off, cut the power via a power strip.) A big question among

The Northern Illinois Food Bank Needs Your Help to “Strike out Hunger.”
Who: The Northern Illinois Food Bank (NIFB), Dodge Lanes, and 24 bowling teams
(maximum of 5 people per team). This is a great opportunity for co-workers or corporations

What: The participants will join the NIFB in striking out hunger. $300 is the fee per

Downtown Genoa will be a sea of red on Friday, April 24, as Red Hatters from across

Mendelssohn Performing Arts Center is pleased to announce that the Mendelssohn
Chorale will be holding auditions for section leaders on Monday, April 20 at 5 p.m. at the

Picking a Great Dog Trainer
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have two small children, and we recently added a new member
to our family -- a Cocker Spaniel puppy. “Missy” is adorable, and my kids absolutely love
her; however, she is more than I bargained for. I am having a very hard time training her and
was thinking about going to a dog trainer who can work on everything from house training
to basic commands and even aggression. I have been hearing about a dog trainer based
nearby. How do I know if he’ll be a good trainer for my dog? -- Jessica P., via e-mail
DEAR JESSICA: Word-of-mouth recommendations about a dog trainer can be very
telling, and if the person telling you about him thinks he is good and can help you, there’s
a good chance he can.
Of course, there are other questions you should ask directly of the trainer when you
contact him. Does he belong to a professional organization such as the Association of Pet
Dog Trainers (found at www.apdt.com)? Does he specialize in certain breeds? How much
experience does he have training Cocker Spaniels? What is the training format -- one on one
with the trainer, or a group setting with pet owners? Can other family members participate
in the class? Are there any health restrictions or specific vaccinations required of Missy
before she can join?
Don’t worry about asking too many questions! Good trainers care about your dog and
will do their best to answer them.
Working with a professional trainer will be incredibly beneficial for both Missy and you.
It’s not only Missy who’s learning how to respond to commands, you also will learn how to
respond to Missy’s behavior, how to stop bad habits and how to continue training her long
after the sessions end. That’s right -- professional training is not just for your dog, it’s also

A 19-year-old woman was trapped in her burning vehicle
after it ran off the road and hit a tree in Northern Boone
County near Capron and Coon Trail Rd.
Anthony Izzo and Ron Welzen said they just reacted
on the morning of March 15 to save Casandra Mahlum, a
Wisconsin resident who was on her way home after getting
a new puppy.

passenger side window and then pulled the victim away

Boone County Sheriff Duane Wirth told the board that
the victim would undoubtedly not been able to escape if the
two had not risked their own lives to get her out.
When asked if they felt like heroes, both said in similar
ways that they just did what was natural.
“I always assumed he was the type of person that would
do whatever needed to be done. I just didn’t think it would
happen right there,” said Nancy Welzen, Ron’s wife. “I’m
proud of him. He did a brave thing.”

Leaving a Family Tree for Future Generations
Have you ever done your family tree? Even if there
aren’t any genealogy fans in the current generations of your
family, you never know when someone will develop an
interest in learning about the family’s history.
Here are some things you can do for the next
generations:
• Identify all photos. If you write on the backs of them,
it’s important not to use a ball point pen or anything with a
sharp point. Special acid-free pens are available this purpose.
It’s best if photos aren’t stored in albums with plastic pages.
Instead, store photos carefully in archive boxes with sheets
of acid-free paper between the layers.
• Scanning photos and putting them onto CD can be a
tedious job, but if you have the time and equipment, it’s
one way to share photos while the originals are stored away.
You also can have the CDs copied and mailed to family
members.
• Write or record stories of your life. Make a list of the
tales you wish to write down and check them off as you go.
Or you can type your stories or put them on tape and ask
someone to transcribe them. The point is to get them down
somewhere. Consider having copies made to give to family
members.
If you’ve never done your family’s genealogy, take
a class that will teach you to use the Internet to research
back beyond the generations you know from memory. In the
class you’re sure to learn how to discern which sites have
good information and which are likely to have inaccurate
information. A class also will let you try out the different
genealogy programs that are available and show you how to
use family group charts.
Going Back to Work
Perhaps you’d considered your paid-off home to be the
nest egg you’d sell and use for retirement funds. Or, maybe
you had all your money invested. Because of the state of
the economy, you might be thinking now that it will be
necessary to go back to work.
If that’s the case, here are some Web sites that can help.

service with a database loaded with jobs for seniors. Put
in your ZIP code and a few keywords and click GO. Or
click the category links for positions in Sales, Real Estate,

you get more than just access to the job listings. You’ll
get a free 50-page job seeker’s guide (via download) that
covers topics such as planning your job search, finding
employers friendly to seniors and polishing up your resume.

online career workshops on Tuesday nights.

Department of Labor program, puts low-income seniors
over 55 to work in community-service jobs in 30 states.
--Don’t forget AARP (www.aarp.org). Put “jobs” in the

operates in all 50 states. It provides training for seniors who
seek employment.

Art is in the air this weekend, April 18 and April 19.
Whatever your own personal definition of art, you can find
it this weekend. It will be a multi-media blitz in Rockford
as the area opens its doors to countless artists, creators,
preservers, restorers and collectors.
Classics & Chrome Car Show
Vintage Wings & Wheels Display
One of the biggest fund raisers of the season will occur
On Saturday, April 18 and Sunday, April 19 at the Indoor
Sports Center, 8800 E. Riverside in Loves Park. Classics
and Chrome is Keith Country Day School’s annual event
that brings thousands to view classic cars and antique modes
of transportation in a world-class exhibition.
The 100-plus vehicle display will showcase the “Pearl
Harbor” car, an auto that actually survived the historic
attack. The war veteran auto is one of many celebrity sets of
wheels that will be there. Of the 1,000s of applications that
were reviewed over the course of eight months, the Selection
Committee of the Classics and Chrome Car Show chose the
roster of cars that were admitted for the 2009 show.
Among the chosen were three James Bond movie cars
and the 1949 MGTC, driven by Oliver (Ryan O’Neal) in
the movie Love Story. No major event in town would be
complete without The Tricksters’ involvement and the
Classics and Chrome event is no exception; Cheap Trick’s
“Dream Police Tactical Vehicle” will be there, complete
with a laser light show and built-in video game, among
other things. It’s teched out to the max, with some features
you’ll definitely want to show up to check out.
Categories this year include Pre-war; Post-war; Sports
Cars; Muscle Cars; Hot Rod and Custom Cars; Specialty
Cars and Motorcycles. Marketing and Communications
Director of Keith, Gary Kohn, said the restoration has to be
complete to be considered so you know the cars are going to
look good. Entries are also chosen on how unique a vehicle
it is based upon year, make and model, says Kohn. In all, a
century of vehicles will be represented.
Attendees will get the chance to vote for the People’s
Choice Award; last year’s winner was a Bubble Top Roadster
owned by Aaron Grote from Cerro Gordo, Ill., and no doubt
there will be some exciting choices to make this year.

executive director Kip Kirkland said, “It brings to the public
a presentation of vintage aviation and classic cars in our

Classics and Chrome group.”
Over the past three years, 12 kids ages 15-21 have been
restoring the 1930 vintage Aeroncia Chief airplane found
in local aviator Steve Thomas’ barn. It was in pieces when
the Youth Education Program (REA) began restoring it, and
they will bring portions of the plane to the display. Kirkland
says the restoration process will be complete in another year
or so and there will probably be a special event to celebrate
the occasion.

Belvidere North Tops Belvidere in Baseball and Softball

Belvidere North High School varsity athletes thrilled a
large home crowd Wednesday afternoon by defeating rival
Belvidere in baseball, 13-5, and in softball, 9-8, in extra
innings.
For the Blue Thunder it meant starting out 2-0 in NIC10 play – they routed Auburn, 13-1, the day before – and
improving to 7-5 overall. Belvidere dropped to 0-2 in the
conference and 7-5-1 overall.
The Lady Blue Thunder was playing their first conference
game. Overall, they have won four of their last five games
and currently stand at 5-7. Belvidere now is 0-2, having
lost its conference opener to Rockford Boylan, 8-2, and 3-9
overall.
The Baseball Game
Belvidere North took immediate control of the game
with a three-run first inning.
Consecutive walks to leadoff man Tyler Nelson and Noah
Ulbert set the table for winning pitcher Daryn Streed, who
sliced a single into left-center field for two RBI. Two outs
later Steve Russo, who had four RBI in the win over Auburn,
delivered a key single to center, bringing in Streed.
Belvidere was far from through, however, as the Bucs
tied the game with one run in the top of the third and two
more in the fourth. Bobby Gray’s infield out scored the
visitor’s first run; Maykol Rodriguez singled home the
second and third tallies.
But the Blue Thunder reclaimed the momentum with a
three spot in their half of the fourth to lead, 6-3.
Ulbert, who was on base four times, looped a single
down the right field line to score a pair, then Streed hit his
first of two sacrifice flies to regain the three-run lead.
Belvidere sliced the deficit to 6-4 when it strung together
four base hits in the top of the fifth, including Adam
Kadisak’s RBI single. But North turned a double play to put
a damper on that promising rally.
And then the Blue Thunder counted six hits of their own
in the bottom of the fifth to put the game out of reach, 124.
Patrick Grove continued his offensive proficiency – he
had five RBI in the win over Auburn – by singling home
teammate Ryan Golubski to start the fifth. Nelson had an
RBI single and stole home on the back end of a delayed
double steal with teammate Ulbert. Streed had another
run—producing sacrifice fly, then Doug Traceski joined the
RBI parade by singling home Ulbert.
Andrew Hildebrand batted twice in the fifth, singling
both times, and he scored one run.
For the game the No. 1 and No. 2 batters in North’s
lineup, Nelson and Ulbert, had perfect days by getting on
base eight times and scoring five runs. Streed helped himself
with four RBI.
“It’s a good feeling for them (Belvidere) to come here
and for us to beat them,’’ Streed said. “This is a good start
for us in the conference.’’
He is pleased with the way the team is hitting better;
Head Coach James Paddock is pleased with the way the
Blue Thunder are executing on the field.
“We’re refocused,’’ he said. “It’s one pitch, one inning
at a time. We’re not winning the game before we step on
the field.’’
The Softball Game
Belvidere North Head Coach Olivia Lebensorger said
the game was like a ping-pong match.
Her team fell behind in the top of the first inning, 2-0,
but bounced back for five runs in bottom half. The Lady
Blue Thunder led 7-4 going into the seventh and final inning
only to see Belvidere score four times to lead, 8-7. North
bounced back again, plating one run to send the game into
extra innings. And then the hosts won it with a single run in
the bottom of the ninth.
Amanda Hartzell tripled and scored and Nicole Boucher
singled and scored to give Belvidere a temporary 2-0 lead.
But in the bottom of the first an error, fielder’s choice,
two singles and a walk put Holly Hilden, Emily Hawkins,
Jordan Hartfiel, Amanda Behling and Taelor Pipkin on base
and they all scored to make it 5-2, home team.
In what appeared to be the decisive seventh inning for
the Lady Bucs Hartzell singled, Katie Wiegartz walked,

Julia Fish doubled and Christina Sennebogen was safe on
an error, all scoring to make it 8-7.
North came right back with Sarina Olsen driving home
Pipkin, who reached on an error, to send the game into extra
innings.
Hawkins singled to start the eighth for the Lady Blue
Thunder, but she was erased in a double play.
Belvidere’s Cory Beeson walked and got as far as second
base in the top of the ninth but Jillian Leutscher, who won
the game in relief of Pipkin, struck out the next batter to end
the threat.
Then North put the game in the W column by stringing
four base hits in the bottom of the ninth in a somewhat
unusual way.
Pipkin led off with a single to center field. Alyssa Peterson
tried to bunt her to second base but instead beat the throw to
first for an infield single. The same thing then happened to
Olsen and North had the bases loaded with nobody out.
Leutscher became an instant hero when she dumped a
single into short center field to score Pipkin with the winning
run.
It was the second memorable moment for Leutscher,
a junior, in the past week. She recently threw a no-hitter
at Woodstock in a 4-0 non-conference win, then won the
Belvidere game for her team with a base hit.
“It was quite a week,’’ she said after the game. “It was
fun to beat Belvidere.’’
She’s looking forward to the upcoming barrage of
conference games, saying, “We usually do better against
tough teams.’’
Coach Lebensorger was pleased by the way her team
never quit, especially after being shocked by that four-run
Belvidere seventh inning.
“We almost gave it away a lot of times,’’ she said, “but
they’re improving in the little things, like moving the runner
over.’’

Leutscher Throws No-hitter at Woodstock Impress Coach

Jillian Leutscher threw a no-hitter at Woodstock and
was backed by strong defense as Belvidere North’s varsity
soccer team enjoyed a week where it won three of four
games.
She was backed April 9 by a solid defense – six caught
fly balls and six infield grounders handled flawlessly –
while showing prowess herself with eight strikeouts in the
complete game performance.
Woodstock had six base runners, five on walks and one
on a North error.
Offensively, the Lady Blue Thunder scored four runs in
the first inning, which were more than enough to win the
non-conference game.
Danielle Johnson started by singling off the left fielder’s
glove and scoring on Holly Hilden’s double, her first of two
hits in the contest. Errors on hard-hit grounders off the bats
of Emily Hawkins and Jordan Hartfiel set the table for Andie
Behling, whose double scored both of her teammates.
“I think the team looked great at the plate; they
were finally having some fun, too,’’ Head Coach Olivia
Lebensorger said. “Our defense was playing fundamentally
sound.’’
After starting out 1-6, the Lady Blue Thunder have
improved their overall record to 4-7.
The Lady Bucs of Belvidere rallied from two deficits to
edge Winnebago, 5-4, for their third victory of the season.
Right-hander Felicia Kaspar won with a complete-game
effort, allowing just three base hits while striking out eight.
Teammate Amanda Hartzell led the offense by going 2-for-4
with a double.
After a 3-0 start, North Boone’s Lady Vikings are
continuing to look for answers, having dropped three in a
row including a 7-5 decision to Auburn in which the hosts
scored six first-inning runs.
North outhit Auburn, 9-5, but was only able to put five
runs on the board. Kelsey Crull paced the Lady Viking
offense with a 3-for-4 day at the plate while teammates
Sarah Seckinger, Emily Micek and Kirstin Loeffel each had
two base hits.
In an earlier game, Micek hit the first-ever over the fence
home run for North Boone in a 15-9 loss to Winnebago.
The Lady Indians of Marengo High School are
continuing their exemplary season, owning a 9-1 record
following a sweep of a doubleheader against Kaneland.
Danielle Simons, who threw a strong game against
Belvidere North in a 14-0 shutout earlier this season,
improved her personal record to 5-0 by throwing a twohitter at Kaneland.
Lauren Roudabush and Chloe Montgomery each had
three hits for the Lady Indians in the 7-1 victory, while
Kaleigh Velasquez drove in two runs.
In the second game Maddie McGuire (3-1) threw a
three-hit shutout at Kaneland, with 11 strikeouts, in a 2-0
victory. Amanda Hart and Alysa Grude each had one RBI
for Marengo.
Boys’ Track
Belvidere High School participated in its first outdoor
meet, after having three cancelled because of inclement
weather, and the team’s overall performance brought
positive comments from the head coach.
“I was very pleased with the overall performance,’’ said
Coach Whitehead. “We showed promise in a few events at
both the freshman/sophomore and varsity levels.’’
Host Woodstock won the meet with 95 points, followed
by Burlington-Central with 61 and the Bucs with 27.
Freshman Marcus Gooden scored 12 of his team’s points
by winning two field events – the long jump and triple jump
– and placing third in the 200-meter dash. The 4-by-100meter relay team made up of Evan DuBose, Darien Gee,
Everett Fitts and Gooden placed second.
The Bucs came up with four third-place finishes from
DuBose in the 400-meter dash; Cameron Adams in both the
shot put and discus; and Dallas Stevens in the high jump.
Fitts wound up fourth in the triple jump as did Jacob
Brenz in the discus, Casey Miner in the 100-meter dash and
William Padilla in the 800-meter run.
Varsity, Junior Varsity Tennis
The Belvidere High School varsity and junior varsity
teams didn’t have much luck as they competed against
Hoffman Estates and Jacobs Quads, respectively, with the
varsity also dropping a 5-2 decision to DeKalb.
The Bucs came closest to a victory at Hoffman Estates
against the Hawks, in a dual match they lost by a scant 3-2.
Kevin Baccam won at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 7-6 (6), while the
No. 2 double team of Dustin Novacek and Cesar Lira also
was victorious by a 6-3, 6-3 count.
But BHS was shutout by both Geneva and Jacobs high
schools.
In their dual match with DeKalb, wins were registered
by Novacek-Lira at No. 2 doubles, 6-1, 6-1, and by Antonio
Policarpo and Osiel Hernandez at No. 3 doubles, 6-2, 6-1.
Policarpo and Hernandez played for the JVs in the
Jacobs Invitational and scored the only point for their team,
winning their No. 1 doubles encounter, 6-2, 6-3 against
Hoffman Estates.
Soccer
A multitude of injuries have made the early going tough
for Belvidere North High School as the Lady Blue Thunder
are winless so far in the 2009 season.
They’ve dropped decisions to Marengo, Rochelle,
Plainfield South, Hoffman Estates, South Elgin, Lakes,
Freeport and Rockford Guilford.
Torri McConnell scored North’s first goal of the season,
on an assist by Lauren Waddell, in a 4-2 loss to Marengo.
Waddell had the other goal, on a penalty kick.
In the 5-2 setback at Rochelle, Waddell scored once in
the first half, unassisted, while Abby Jackson had a score
also in the first half, assisted by Kaitlyn Ryan.
Erin Hauser scored the Lady Blue Thunder’s only goal
in a close 3-1 loss to Plainfield South in the Hoffman Estates
Tournament.
And Waddell picked up her third goal of the season,
assisted by Ryan, against South Elgin.
It wasn’t any better for the Belvidere Lady Bucs,
who lost matches to Rockford Boylan, 8-0, and Rockford
Guilford, 6-1. Liz Kaluzinski scored her fourth goal of the
year in the loss to Guilford.
Boylan’s JVs also won, 7-0.
Junior Varsity Baseball
Belvidere High School saw its record slip to 5-5 with
losses to McHenry, 7-1, and Huntley, 5-4.
Bobby Pester (2-for-3) and Blaise Humphry (2-for-2)
each drove in one run against Huntley while Jake Culvey
went 1-for-3 with a double.

Youth Baseball Opens 51st Year Monday

Belvidere Youth Baseball launches its 51st year of serving the community with a Bronco Boys game at 5:30 p.m.
Monday, April 20 at the Boone County Fairgrounds complex off State Route 76, north of town.
Anderson Bros. Excavating, one of nine teams for boys 11-12 years of age, will take on Bel Rock Asphalt Paving in the
opener. Pactiv, the 2008 champion with a 14-2 record, will meet Rotary, last year’s runner-up at 13-2, in the second game
of the spring at 5:30 p.m. April 22.
Moose Club posted a 9-5 mark to finish third.
BYB President Todd Humphry said there are 650 boys and girls participating this year in baseball and softball, up
considerably from last year’s 567 players. Quite a few are coming here from other programs, such as those in Poplar Grove
and Rockford.
Three teams were added for the 2009 season.
Among the highlights of the upcoming season will be a Memorial Day weekend tournament; an Ice Cream Social on
June 7, featuring a day filled with all-star competition; and league tournaments for all except the youngest competitors the
week of July 6.
Organization President Humphry said BYS in the past year redid the Bronco and Pony League outfield fences and the
Mustang and Pinto League diamonds.
“We will be finishing up on Saturday,’’ he said, with help provided by Belvidere North and Belvidere high school
baseball players.
Other games coming up in the near future include a Pony Legion match-up between Silvers and Legion at 5:30 p.m.
April 23 at the fairgrounds complex.
Legion won last year’s championship with a 17-3 record, followed by Silvers and MR Custom Millwork in a tie for
second, each posting a 10-10 mark.
Pony baseball is for boys 13-14 years of age.
Mustang Boys Baseball, for those 9-10 years of age, will see a game between VFW, the defending champion, and
Degner Family Dentistry at 5:30 p.m. April 27.
VFW won nine of 10 games last year, edging I.O.U., which finished second at 8-2, and Dr. Chapko (7-3) and Degner
(6-2), which finished in a tie for third.
Pinto Boys Baseball, for those 7-8 years of age, doesn’t get under way until May 28.
Girls’ softball will begin May 2 with action in the Junior Girls League, for those 11-13 years of age. Last year’s
champion was Belvidere Officers Association, closing out at 13-2. McDonald’s of Belvidere was a close second with a
12-3 record. Mustang Girls, for those 9-10, will start May 27. Pinto Girls, those 7-8, also will begin play May 27.
In addition to all those teams, BYS also sponsors Colt and Legion baseball teams for older boys, which play during the
summer, along with 14U and 16U travel softball teams.

An unusual baseball doubleheader was played Saturday
at Belvidere North High School.
A predominantly senior lineup competed in the first
game, against visiting DeKalb, and lost, 5-1.
Then those seniors took a seat as Head Coach James
Paddock played an all-junior lineup in the second game, also
won by DeKalb, 12-10, in eight innings. But the spirited
play of the juniors brought words of commendation from
their coach.
“The juniors played their hearts out,’’ he said afterward.
“I was very impressed with their attitude and approach to
the game. I hope the seniors learned something from their
play.’’
North’s bottom line is a 5-5 overall record, after a 4-0
start, though Coach Paddock looks at it as a 5-4 mark
because he considers the second game to be a junior varsity
outing.
DeKalb came into the twin bill with a 10-2 record left at
11-2 or 12-2, depending on how you look at the outcome.
A handful of juniors played in the first game, in particular
Brock Dvorak who pitched two innings of scoreless relief
with one strikeout. Patrick Grove singled in his only
appearance at the plate, but in the nightcap he was on base
five times with two singles, two walks and one hit by a
pitch.
The Blue Thunder came back from a 3-0 deficit in the
second game to lead, 5-3, after three innings of play. A
two-run sixth gave them a 10-9 lead going into the seventh
and final inning, but DeKalb scored once to tie it. Then the
visitors scored twice in the top of the eighth for the 12-10
win.
Belvidere North collected 12 hits in the game, two each
by Josh Wood, Seth Bicksler and Pat Grove. Wood was on
base four times with two RBI in the fourth inning, while
Steve Bredeson doubled home two runs in the five-run third.
Grove had RBI singles in the third and the sixth; Dvorak
singled home one run in the sixth.
Wood, Bicksler and Grove each scored two runs.
And everyone in the starting in the starting lineup had at
least one base hit.
Three runs were gifts from DeKalb.
For example, in the five-run third, Cody Weith singled
with one out and moved around to third when Wood was
hit by a pitch and Bicksler singled down the left-field line.
Dvorak grounded to the right side and when DeKalb’s first
baseman tried to force Weith at home he threw wildly,
allowing two runs to score.
In the fifth, North scored once without benefit of a hit.
Grove led off with a walk, took second on a wild pitch and
stole third. Craig Riccardo walked and when he tried to
steal second base the catcher’s throw sailed into center field,
enabling Grove to score.
Bredeson and Jake Kimlicka shared pitching duties for
the Blue Thunder.
The opener wasn’t as dramatic though North did lead 1-0
after the first inning.
Tyler Nelson opened with a walk, eventually scoring on
Andrew Hildebrand’s clutch, two-out single. Steve Russo
followed with a single to right, but Hildebrand was thrown
out at the plate, trying to make it 2-0.
There was an element of controversy in the third when
Nelson singled and worked his way around to third base.
With two out Hildebrand appeared to have beaten out a
grounder to shortstop, scoring North’s second run of the
game, but the field umpire called him out.
Paddock protested to no avail. “I called him out and he’s
out,’’ the field umpire said decidedly.
The Blue Thunder managed only four base runners over
the game’s final six innings on singles by Grove, Nelson and
Ryan Golubski and a walk to Noah Ulbert.

Bowling at Next Level
Belvidere North High School senior Melissa Knox
has signed a letter of intent to bowl for McKendree
University in Lebanon, Ill. She was awarded a partial
scholarship to attend McKendree, currently ranked No.
2 in the nation and which will be competing or a national
championship this weekend at the Cherry Bowl.
Melissa was captain of the Lady Blue Thunder team
the past two seasons. In the classroom she carries a 3.39
grade point average, which puts her in the top 15 percent
of her class. She is also sports editor of the high school
newspaper.
Playing at the Stadium
When the junior varsity and varsity baseball teams
from Belvidere North and Belvidere high schools play
again Wednesday, May 6, they will do so at Road Ranger
Stadium, home of the Rockford RiverHawks.
The JVs will start the afternoon’s competition at 3:30
p.m. followed by the varsity at 6 p.m.
Admission is free for both games. Road Ranger
Stadium, which seats 3,279 people, is located at 4503
Interstate Blvd., off Riverside Drive, in Loves Park.

Belvidere High School Students Recognized
On April 8, 2009, Belvidere High School’s I.D.E.A.,
Individuals Dedicated to Excellence in Academics, program
recognized 263 students for their outstanding performance
in academics and school attendance.
To be involved in the program for each quarter, all
members must maintain a minimum G.P.A. and may not
have any unexcused absences and have no more than three
excused absences. Students who meet these program
standards have the chance to earn a variety of benefits that
have been donated to the program by local businesses. The
goal of the I.D.E.A. program is to provide positive rewards
for students who define academic excellence in our school.
