2010 Smoky Hill River Festival June 10-13 Oakdale Park – Salina, Kansas Festival Mission: To celebrate the arts and this community through a festival happening that is accessible to anyone – physically, psychologically, and economically. Greetings from the City of Salina On behalf of the City of Salina, welcome to the 34th annual Smoky Hill River Festival! For years now, the Festival has marked the unofficial start to summer fun in Salina! As a leader in arts and entertainment in Kansas, our community places a high value on the cultural experiences enjoyed right here in Oakdale Park. Just off the banks of the Smoky Hill River, you will find first class musicians, artists, sculptors, and craftsmen with talents and offerings that enrich us each summer. As you stroll through the arts and crafts, or sit down to enjoy some music, be sure to treat your taste buds to the culinary delights of the Festival as well. From traditional fare to exotic, eating great food is part of the experience! Here in Salina, arts and culture enhances our quality of life, and brings about a multi-million dollar economic value. Let the sights, sounds, and flavors of the Festival foster your own appreciation for the arts. Take time to enjoy these early summer days with your friends and family, and make the Smoky Hill River Festival an annual tradition! Aaron Peck Mayor Welcome! It is my privilege to welcome you to the 34th annual Smoky Hill River Festival! We have so many exciting offerings for you—including four pre-festival installations in the downtown area (see program back cover) underwritten by direct grants from the National Endowment for the Arts; and a dozen concerts/workshops with the Grammy winning artists of Trio Globo in Wichita, McPherson, Lucas, and Junction City— all extending Festival beyond Oakdale Park. And oh boy, this wonderful Festival does extend beyond Oakdale Park and beyond the second weekend in June. Often, Festival artists are here for extended periods of time; or they return to engage the community through one of Salina’s wonderful cultural organizations or with school children through the Arts & Humanities Department’s nationally recognized arts-in-education program. To help us extend the creative festival spirit all summer to children in Salina’s neighborhoods, this year we are launching Arts & Humanities’ new Mobile Arts Van, “Arty”. Please look for the colorful arts van in the park this weekend. My heartfelt thanks to the wonderful staff and 2000 volunteers who make this event possible each year. Last, but never least, to you! Thank you for joining us! Discover and experience these innovative and resourceful creations throughout the park. No ticket is necessary. South of the Children’s Stage Arthroparade We love the ANTS!! Follow these delightful arthropods into Salina’s ultimate picnic! Created by Rich Bergen, Harold Riedel, Salina and Larry Goodwin, Colorado Springs, this group of popular weekend guests guarantee spontaneous smiles! Bicentennial Center Bridge Colorful Creative Crawlers are on the march painting the landscape near the Bravo Salina! Stage. These five “daddy long legs” are the creations of artist Matt Dehaemers, Kansas City and are sure to “in-spider” young and old alike! South of Bravo Salina! Stage Catch You on the Flipside Emotions and images, nostalgia and memories of Festivals past are translated in a contemporary kinetic photo montage. You might discover a familiar expression in this interactive installation by artists Ann Arkebauer, Salina and her sons Chris Wilson, Kansas City and Adam Wilson, Lawrence. West of Bicentennial Center Bridge Distance, Direction, Event (Phase I, 2009) Salina’s remarkable cultural organizations are celebrated in a two-phase installation in this system of iconic weathervanes created by Wichita artist Elizabeth Stevenson. Look UP for the RED ARROWS throughout the Festival landscape. Each piece indicates the direction and distance from their location within the Festival to the actual locale of the organization. “Circuit Diagrams” – (Phase II, 2010, page 40) 2010 Phase II, the weathervanes will allow each viewer to become an allegorical conduit for the energy and he or she effectively becomes a battery cell, or energy storage receptacle. When the visitor then finds their way from Oakdale Park to the corresponding cultural organization, he or she completes the “circuit” by discharging the energy into the Phase II device, in his or her interaction with the terminals there. This buildingcentric event thus closes the original system, while simultaneously instigating a new force; in due course, registered by one of the weathervanes. The entire installation functions as an extension of Stevenson’s work The Girl Who Lived in a Sign, a whimsical and thoughtful story about place, energy, and life. Dream Catchers Art instructors Ann Zerger and Dee ErwaySherwood, McPherson College facilitate this installation designed and executed by the college sculpture class. These environmentally friendly sculptures made of natural and recyclable materials are the result of the students’ perspectives and aesthetics applied to the challenge of creating a work of art which would eventually disappear. North of the Kenwood Bridge 15 Artists in Action Flower Animals Kansas City artist Juniper (T.J.) Tangpuz expands on his inspiration! Animals with flower names take on a large-scale presence with their dual characteristics…from “Tiger Lily” to “Snapdragon” these incredible large-scale sculptures intrigue and delight! West of the Bicentennial Center Bridge Looks Like Lips Ann Arkebauer, Salina, presents ten large colorfully painted canvases featuring multiple intersecting, angular and opposing radiating lines. Viewers are challenged to determine “background” and “foreground,” while discovering “pattern groupings” as they come alive in each panel. East of Fourth Street Bridge Artists in Action Nature’s Playfulness Kansas City graffiti artist, GEAR returns to create more of his charming and colorful characters. Watch this “artist-in-action.” His “spray paint” techniques and skill are astonishing. See Map page 21 for locations. Roving Insects Look around for this group of young dancers instructed by Annie Hickman of “Bugs and Balloons” wearing her amazing basketry creations! Surreal Trees Solomon Art Instructor, Alicia Firstbrook-Stott leads a design team of high school students in transforming the treescape. Colorful trees have become reference markers and a surreal twist to nature! West of Bicentennial Center Bridge West of Craft Demonstration Metamorphosis The experience of humanity coming together at an arts festival fosters inspiration in us all! With art as a catalyst, fiber artist Bill Godfrey, Tarentum, PA, celebrates how creative changes in individuals result in positive effects on community. Vibrant colors, people holding hands, a collective movement of imagery inspired by the Festival! Pond - North of Stage II Mirrahzh Get Caught Reading at the Festival! Throughout the weekend Salina Public Library staff will be roaming the festival crowds looking for someone they can catch reading. Readers will be given special acknowledgment at the Festival and all readers’ names will be entered into a drawing for a great prize. I See You, You See Me “Eyes are the windows to the soul”…how do we see each other? Erika Nelson, Lucas, KS and Bill Godfrey, Tarentum, PA present a shared art installation drawing inspiration from the world of the Austrian artist Hundertwasser. North Tennis Court Fence 16 Salina artist Brad Anderson revisits his inspiration from Festival 1988! Participants are invited to enter the installation and disappear in a surround of shimmering mylar reflections. Fragments of the visible, perceivable world are present, but ever-changing! South of Stage II Friday, Saturday 10-6 p.m., Sunday 10-5 p.m. Mobile Arts Van Join us for the birth of a new summer program! The Mobile Arts Van, “Arty” is a rolling arts incubator that will bring an array of art projects to Salina neighborhoods and organizations throughout June and July. Look for project demonstrations at the Festival. West of the Demonstration Area Mystic Garden Gypsum sculptor, Don Osborn considers the simple beauty of plant life…a series of large aquatic plant-like forms constructed from natural branches and cuttings reference and contrast the regional Kansas landscape. Bright celebrative colors spark the imagination and lead viewers to reflect on history and the perception of object and of art, a relationship shaped through layered interpretation. Pond – North of Stage II Poetry Wall Rich Bergen’s “S River Scroll” magnetic Poetry Wall provides a new canvas for this ever-changing literary masterpiece! Local high school English teachers and students, coordinated by Katrina Paradis will lead this popular returning activity. East of the Kenwood Bridge Reinventing the Wheel What would Festival be like without the “Wheels!” This mesmerizing and graceful kinetic sculpture designed by architect David Exline, Aliso Viejo, CA has awed Festival attendees for eight years and become a Festival signature! Realized through the creative and technical minds of the Exline family and enthusiastic community volunteers, it is literally a reflection of the collaborative spirit of the Festival! On the Kenwood Bridge Riverbank Mural Salina native, Colin Benson, Denver, CO will once again bring design and color to the Festival landscape. Relax at the riverbank and enjoy the canvas! Riverbank at Kenwood Bridge Tent of Dreams Dream images are the inspiration for this fabric construction by artist, Bill Godfrey, Tarentum, PA. We invite you to explore this magical park, transformed during a few days each year into a colorful bazaar of art, music and festive fun. Then see the city again and again—explore the mystery of the Girl Who Lived in the Sign by investigating her Distance, Direction, Event installations here at the park and her Circuit Diagrams in downtown and beyond—find the energy that invigorates Salina to be the great place it is. (See page 15 of this program for clues.) Regional commissioned artists, working with a mentor knowledgeable in community-based art, developed four distinctly different installations. We encourage you to explore them. Waiting in the Wings A mural designed by David Loewenstein (Lawrence) is being painted in collaboration with Debbie Wagner of Bennington; created for the wall behind the outdoor stage at Campbell Plaza, 100 block South Santa Fe. Organic Constructions Kenneth A. Huff is an interdisciplinary visual artist (Savannah, GA) working in a variety of traditional and new media. Working with Josh Morris (curator, Smoky Hill Museum) time-based video window installations will explore evolving patterns and forms in nature. 100 - 300 blocks of North Santa Fe. (Festival after dark - Bicentennial Bridge) Circuit Diagrams Artists Elizabeth Stevenson (Wichita) in collaboration with Randy Regier (K-State MFA graduate now living in Maine) have created the second phase of her 2009 Smoky Hill River Festival project exploring the energy of the community that is driven by Salina’s incredible arts and cultural organizations. See inside back cover for clues on where to find them. Iron Pour Ed Pogue (Bethany College, Lindsborg) and Tobias Flores (Fort Hays State University) completed a large Cast Iron Pour in downtown Salina. Small castings from the pour and a video of the event can be seen at the Festival Demonstration Area. Your Festival Button Has Added Value!
