Things to do
Softly rolling hills on the border between Umbria
and Tuscany eight charming villages, each one
unique unto itself. A landscape characterised by
the serene presence of the lake, by towns steeped
in history, in art, culture and genuine flavours.
Time goes by slowly here at Trasimeno Lake, the
atmosphere is a convivial one, everyone knows
one another, they still meet on the many piazzas
to chat and spend time together. Trails and paths
crisscross the woods and hills, breathtaking views
featuring the deep blue of the lake appear below
and the landscape is dotted with towns and hamlets,
precious and timeless treasure boxes of a culture
and tradition which is still alive. This harmony
makes this region a truly unique place, a land
where life is still “well lived”, where the environment
and historical roots are clearly intertwined. It is
also in a very strategic position from which to strike
out on excursions to some of the most beautiful
art cities of central Italy: Perugia, Assisi, Gubbio,
Siena, Florence, Arezzo, Orvieto, Rome.
Come and enjoy a taste of how we live life!
MAGICAL PLACE OF HISTORY AND MYTHOLOGY
Without a doubt, the Prince of Trasimeno was also
under the spell of the beauty and harmony of this
land. He was the son of the mythical founding
father of the Etruscans, King Tirreno. Enchanted
by this landscape, he fell deeply in love with the
nymph Agilla. This passionate love story, however,
ended in his tragic death. Since then the lake has
taken the name of this lovelorn prince, Trasimeno,
and they say that when the wind caresses the water
one can still hear the mournful laments of Agilla,
eternally searching for her long lost love. Here at
the Lake, mythology blends seamlessly with history
and there are tales of a place considered sacred
by the Etruscans. In fact Lake Trasimeno, which
the Etruscans called Tarsminas on their Tabula
Cortonensis, was seen as a sort of earthly
representation of heaven.

Castiglione del Lago is located at the northwestern extremity

the serene backdrop of the water. Man and naturenzlive
utmost harmony here. The old centre of the town dominates
the lake from a hilltop which, in ancient times, was itself
an island, the fourth one of Lake Trasimeno. There are
traces of an ancient Etruscan sanctuary here and the
Roman origins of the town are clearly evident in the parallel
streets which cut through it lengthwise. Well worth a visit
is the museum and its Palazzo della Corgna (1) a- with

Duke Ascanio della Corgna - and the medieval
Leone (2) fortress with its pentagonal structure mirroring
the constellation after which it was named, the mystical
symbol of perfection. There are several churches and
sanctuaries in the area bearing witness to the passage
of history and man’s delicate and loving hand can be
clearly seen on the landscape beyon: the area was the
Etruscan’s granary, it is where the vineyards and olive
groves not only pleased the eye, but the palate too.

The palazzo built by Galeazzo Alessi in the mid-1500s at the behest of the
Marquis Ascanio della Corgna is a lovely example of Italian Renaissance
architecture and features a marvellous fresco cycle painted by Niccolò'3f
Circignani, known as Il Pomarancio, and an antiquarium with Etruscan
and Roman relics found in the surrounding areas. A narrow walkway
connects the Palazzo to the Rocca, a fortress built in 1247 with a fivesided layout recalling the constellation Leo, which also for this reason and
much like Lake Trasimeno, is considered a sacred and mysterious place.

Città della Pieve sits at 508m above sea level and looks
out over the Valdichiana and Lake Trasimeno. The town
has all the characteristics of a border town, with
harmonious architectural influences from Tuscany, Lazio
and, of course, Umbria. The surrounding landscape was
the one that inspired native son Pietro Vannucci (ca.1450
-1523), known as “Il Perugino”, who left behind many
paintings, starting with is celebrated Adoration of the
Magi in the Oratorio di Santa Maria dei Bianchi (1).
The historical centre boasts Sienese-style buildings that
date back to the early 1200s, buildings with Roman
influence and others that date anywhere from the
Renaissance to Neoclassical. Things to see: Cathedral (2)
ancient church building (with baptism font) of Longobard
origin. Civic Tower (2) - Romanesque tower from the
12th century. Palazzo della Corgna (3) - designed by
Galeazzo Alessi for the family of Ascanio della Corgna.
Santa Maria dei Servi (4). A church of the order of the
Handmaidens of Maria, today the Diocesan Museum.
The Rocca (5) (or Fortress) - fortification built in 1536.
The Church of Saint Augustine (6) - Built in the Gothic
style in the late 13th century and modified in the late
18th century in Neoclassical style.
The circuit is made up of three of the most important historical-artistic and
monumental sites of the city. The celebrated Adoration of the Magi (1504)
by Pietro Vannucci, known as Il Perugino, hangs in the Oratorio di Santa
Maria dei Bianchi, while the last of his great works, the Deposition of the
Cross (1517) is at the Museo Civico Diocesano di Santa Maria dei Servi.
The last site of major importance on the tour is the 16th century Palazzo
della Corgna, designed by Galeazzo Alessi grotesque decorations by
Niccolò Circignani, known as “Il Pomarancio” and his pupil Salvio Savini.

Torre dei Lambardi
Built at the end of the XII century by the
Knights of the Order of the Hospitallers,
also known as the Knights of Malta,
the Torre dei Lambardi sits high above
the town of Magione. The building was
at the centre of fierce battles throughout
the XIV century and, until the end of the
Middle Ages, there were recurring battles
for the possession of this extraordinary
fortress. Today, the tower is a panoramic
place of great charm and has been
tastefully converted for use as a modern
exhibition centre for contemporary art
exhibitions. Open from May to
September from Thursday to Sunday.

Ancient villages and unforgettable sunsets.
The eastern shore of Lake Trasimeno is dotted with towns
and villages steeped in history, it is where the sunsets are
famed for their haunting beauty: San Savino, with its
medieval castle and triangular tower; San Feliciano, a
charming and authentic fishing village; Monte Colognola,
a XIV century village with a unique view of the lakeshore;
Monte del Lago, an architectural gem perched over the
lake; Agello with its marvellous XI century fortress;
Sant’Arcangelo and Torricella, enchanting welcoming towns.
Magione, the main city, is host to the Castle of the Knights
of Malta (1), built in the XII century as a fortified hospital.
Perfectly preserved, it can be visited only on request. A
wonderful inner courtyard hosts the Trasimeno Music Festival
in July, an international festival of classical music directed
by renowned Canadian pianist Angela Hewitt. Magione
further boasts the ancient the Lambardi Tower (2) fortress,
built at the turn of the XII and XIII centuries by the Knights
of the Order of the Hospitallers, which dominates the town
with a magnificent view over the surrounding countryside.
Magione is also dedicated to sports: motor racing, thanks
to the autodromo track, sailing along the shore, hiking in
the hills, windsurfing, quading through the woods and kite
flying on the beaches.
“Museo della Pesca” (3) - San Feliciano
Located in the heart of San Feliciano, a charming fishing village which
has preserved its authenticity, the Museum is an ethno-anthropological
collection which tells of the “culture of water” in and around the Trasimeno
region. It offers a fascinating insight into the relationship between man
and the lake over the course of history. The museum is located next to
the still very active fishermen’s dock and the fishermen themselves actively
contributed to the realization of its interiors. Open from March to December.

Kieran Mulvaney, author and environmentalist, described
Paciano to the Washington Post as follows: My first
impression, when I got here, is that if Hollywood ever
needed to shoot a film in a medieval village, this would
be the one. A visit to this lovely town should start in the
heart of the historical centre, at Palazzo Baldeschi which
houses the information office and TrasiMemo (1), located
near the Don Aldo Rossi museum (2). As one walks
through the old streets one is enchanted at every corner
by the churches, decorations depicting the Madonna,
the little balconies and small shops offering local
delicacies and crafts, all of which, together with the City
Hall on Piazza della Repubblica blend together seamlessly
in a unique medieval way. Upon leaving there are several
nice walks and cultural stops, like the Madonna della
Stella Church (3) which houses a delightful Mannerist
fresco cycle which recounts a star that comes to rest on
the mantle of the Madonna. Coming to this area also
gives the visitor a unique opportunity to discover precious
yet often unknown cultural relics, to taste local delicacies
and enjoy breathtaking views when walking along the
Via Romea Germanica, which was traced in 1200 when
it lead from Stade in Germany to Rome, and here connects
Castiglione del Lago to Città della Pieve.

The ancient art of embroidery on tulle is still being taught at the Municipal
School, in the former Chiesa del Rosario, and features permanent and short
courses for Italians and foreigners. The nature paths for excursions on mountain
bike, donkey or a horse will open up a landscape of gently rolling hills, woods
and streams winding through villages steeped in history, a countryside dotted
with olive groves and vineyards. Visitors who seek real direct contact with

A natural terrace overlooking Lake Trasimeno, Panicale
is the birthplace of artists and leaders and retains all
the characteristics of a medieval castle, the structure
perched on Mount Petrarvella. The three ancient squares
on three different levels characterizes its layout like so
many concentric ellipses. The main square hosts a XV
century well (turned into a fountain in the 1900s ) and
the impressive Collegiate Church of San Michele (1),
while the XIV century Palazzo del Podestà (2) (home
of the Historical Archives) was built on the city’s most
panoramic spot on Piazza Masolino, and obviously
boasts a breathtaking view. In addition to being one
of the most beautiful villages in Italy, Panicale has,
since 2007, also earned the prestigious Orange Flag
from the Italian Touring Club for its important cultural
and landscape heritage, and for the many events it
hosts: the theatre season, music festivals, food festivals,
embroidery courses. The Renaissance left a significant
artistic imprint here through such men as Il Perugino,
Raphael and G. Battista Caporali, just to mention some
the great masters of that era. The nearby Mongiovino
Sanctuary (3) is considered one of the most important
examples of Italian Mannerist art. Designed by Rocco
da Vicenza, it houses works by Il Pomarancio,
Lombardelli, Alfani and many more...

This ancient fishing village, a real gem, is set on the
shore between the blue waters of the lake and the
green of the surrounding hills. Its location makes it
a must for anyone travelling between Umbria and
Tuscany going over the pass which gave Passignano
its name: Passus Jani, or Passo di Giano, the mythical
god of ports. Just outside of town visitors can go
hiking, cycling, mountain biking or horseback riding.
Pieve di San Cristoforo (1), adjacent to the cemetery
on the outskirts of town, is the old parish church of
Passignano and dates to the X century.
The monumental church of the Madonna dell’Oliveto
(2) is in the west of town and was built in the XVI
century. The Rocca (3), or fortress, probably dates
to when the Longobards were here in the V-VI centuries.
It has a stunning view and is opened to the public
for exhibitions, concerts and plays. The Rocca also
hosts the Boat Museum. Perched on a hilltop just
north of town is the hamlet of Castel Rigone, a
charming blend of nature and culture ideal for visitors
seeking an even more tranquil stay. It also boasts
the Santuario of Maria SS. dei Miracoli, a masterpiece
of Umbrian Renaissance architecture.
Nestled in the medieval Rocca, the Boat Museum features exhibits of
lake vessels – part of a special ALLI (Atlante Linguistico dei Laghi
Italiani) project - and also has a room dedicated to the ancient art of
Umbrian embroidery, an art supported by the Marchesa Ranieri of
Sorbello through a school bearing her name. From the Rocca the tour
leads the visitor to the Church of San Cristoforo, which dates to the VIII
and IX centuries and houses some important frescoes. Tours can also
take visitors to the Church of the Madonna dell’Oliveto, a sanctuary built
in the late 1500s.

This museum is named after Luigi Boldrini, an archaeologist who,
while inspecting several local sites in the 1960s, began to gather
samples for the first local paleontological collection. This collection of
fossil remains from the Quaternary lignite sites of Pietrafitta encompasses
several thousand pieces and is one of the most important collections

The Piegaro area is rich in history and natural beauty.
There is much to be explored and discovered here: the
medieval village of Cibottola, with its nearby Convent
of San Bartolomeo (private) and the castles of Gaiche
(which dates back to before 1318) and Greppolischieto,
which have both been beautifully restored to their former
splendor. The lovely village of Castiglion Fosco is not
far and has a round tower dating to the 15th century.
Near Pietrafitta is the Abbey of the Seven Friars, which
has a lovely Romanesque church with a semi-interred
crypt and a monastery with a gorgeous courtyard. Here
you can also find a precious fossil collection, one of
Europe’s richest and most important paleontological

Piegaro there is also the beautifully preserved Palazzo
Misciattelli-Pallavicini (18th century) and the ancient

Irish-point lace-making was introduced on the island in the early 1900s by Marchioness
Elena Guglielmi, and the local women became so adept at making beautiful pieces
that even the likes of the Tsarina of Russia and Queen Margaret wore their fine pieces.
In the 1960s the quality of the lace being made was such and the requests so many
that several island women decided to turn it into an industry. The Museum on the
island displays many of the most beautiful pieces made by these talented ladies,
many of whom can still be seen working together in the sun in front of their homes.

Tuoro sits at the northern end of Lake Trasimeno, on the
border between Umbria and Tuscany. Four itineraries
which trace the steps of history and art have been created
here. The most important of these itineraries is the one
dedicated to history and the archaeology of the Battle
of Trasimeno (1). It meanders through the countryside
which saw one of the bloodiest battles of the 2nd Punic
War between the Romans and the Carthaginians. It
comprises twelve stops featuring illustrated panels in
four languages explaining the fine details of the battle.
The second itinerary is a nature walk through the woods
along the Rio River and takes you to the lovely Vernazzano
Tower (2), which leans dramatically to one side. “Campo

columns made of local stone, known as pietra serena,
set in a lovely park on the lakeshore. The fourth itinerary
is located on Isola Maggiore and is a journey into the
past to explore the stay of Saint Francis on the island
and Renaissance life there. It will also introduce visitors
to the Irish-point lace-makers of the island. The itinerary
also takes visitors to the island’s lovely frescoed church

Land of Etruscan and Roman Civilisation
Because of its strategic location between Florence and Rome, Perugia and Siena, since ancient
times, the Trasimeno area has been at the very centre of Italy’s history. It’s a unique region full of
fascination and eternally fertile lands. Spectacular views and enchanting landscapes are made up
of a harmonious intertwining of the green hills and great civilisations that have animated this land
and its villages. The Etruscans considered Trasimeno, at the crossroads of the great cities of Cortona,
Perugia and Chiusi, as the ideal settlement area and many traces of their existence here can still
today be found in funerary urns, in country houses and in some of the churches which, in all
probability, were built over Etruscan sanctuaries.

The Trasimeno area has a strong spiritual vocation and is home to a rich array of churches,

Land of Great Men and Women
ANNIBALE (247 B.C. - 183 B.C.)
Some consider this Carthaginian general as
the greatest general of all of antiquity. As
you approach Tuoro sul Trasimeno, you
can immediately get a sense of how ideal
this place must have been for the ambush
Hannibal lead which annihilated the
battalions of the Roman consul Caio Flaminio
Nepote. Known as the Battle of Trasemene,
it was one of the bloodiest encounters of the
Second Punic War. At dawn on 24 June,
217 BC, some fifteen thousand Roman
soldiers lost their lives in just three hours of
fierce fighting. The memory of this battle is
kept alive in the Tuoro area with a fascinating
archaeological route dotted with plaques.

Fra’ GIOVANNI da PIAN del CARPINE
Born in Magione, Friar Giovanni was one of St Francis’ first followers. An
explorer and missionary, he was sent out to travel throughout Europe to spread
the Franciscan Order. He became famous for the long and perilous journey
he undertook all the way to Mongolia to deliver a message of peace from the
Pope to the Great Khan in 1245, several years before the more celebrated
Marco Polo embarked on his journey. He wrote about his fascinating travels

The founder of the religious order that still
bears his name, the Trasimeno area can
be considered at the centre of an itinerary
which links the places of the great saint.
Starting in Assisi - Santa Maria degli
Angeli all the way to the Verna Sanctuary
outside of Arezzo and the Convent of the
Cells in Cortona in Tuscany.During his
wanderings, Saint Francis came to Isola
Maggiore for a period of meditation in
1211. In memory of this visit a church
and a convent were built, and there is a
boulder, which can still today be seen,
which they say bears his footstep. Not
far from Castel Rigone is a pilgrimage
site, a large flat stone that legend tells us
is where the saint slept.
Born in 1247 at Laviano (Castiglione del
Lago), Saint Margaret was a woman of
incomparable inner strength and considered
the “third light” of the Franciscan tradition.
After various trying episodes, she moved
to Cortona and became a Franciscan
Tertiary. Her conversion, like a Novella
Maddalena (Pope Benedict XVI), took place
near an oak tree known as del Pentimento
just outside of I Giorgi (Castiglione del
Lago). She was a maker of peace between
the warring local Guelphs and the
Ghibellines and founded the congregation
of the Poverelle and a hospital for the poor.

The Italian Renaissance left many important
traces in Magione in, for example, the treatise
of Niccolò Machiavelli in his The Prince.
Here he cites the Castle of the Knights of
Malta in Magione as the theatre of one of
one of the best-known military conspiracies
against Cesare Borgia, known as il Valentino.
In 1502, he narrowly avoided a plot that
had been organised against him by the lords
of various cities in Central Italy intent on
putting an end to his expansionary aims.
When Borgia heard of the plot, he very
handily befriended the very men that were
against him and then, having gathered them
together in a room at the Castle, killed most
of them and exiled the rest.

Born in Perugia in 1884, Gerardo Dottori is a central
figure of Futurism in art, the most significant Italian
art trend of the XX century. He was one of the most
important exponents of aeropainting, a special way
of portraying mystical landscapes, mostly based on
Lake Trasimeno and Umbria, and, as Marinetti himself
wrote, “renewing the original intensity of Sacred Art.”
Among the works still in Umbria is the frescoed
assembly hall in the Municipal Building of Magione
(in particular the one in which Father Giovanni da
Pian del Carpine delivers a letter of peace from the
Pope to the Great Khan during a long journey that
took him all the way to Mongolia years before Marco
Polo) and those with a religious theme in several

GERARDO DOTTORI
A great adventurer, Ascanio della Corgna’s
name is tied to Città della Pieve and
Castiglione del Lago, both of which are
graced with grand palazzi belonging to his
family, where many rooms are decorated
with frescoes that depict episodes from his
life. Ascanio della Corgna is a prime
example of a strong and vehement
adventurer with, nonetheless, a broad and
gentle humanist streak. He fought in all of
his era’s wars, even as far away as Lepanto,
and was such an able swordsman that
thousands would come watch him duel,
as evidenced by a fresco in the family’s
Castiglione del Lago palace.
The best-known artist of his time, Pietro
Vannucci, also known as “Il Perugino”,
was, among others, also the teacher of
Raphael. Born in Città della Pieve, his
work can be found in the most important
museums the world over. In Città della
Pieve one can still admire his Adoration of
the Magi featuring a procession of knights
that disappears into the vast landscapes
he loved to paint, in which the Trasimeno
area is easily recognised. In Panicale there
is the Martyrdom of St Sebastian depicting
the saint in ecstasy as he is pierced by
arrows, his face looking upwards to God
in the heavens. Sought after by kings and
noblemen, Il Perugino was the founder of
a new way of painting, a style featuring

The Trasimeno region is rich with traces left by emblematic historical personages
VITTORIA AGANOOR and Guido Pompilj
Vittoria Aganoor and Guido Pompilj are
the stars of a romantic yet tragic love
story that took place here at the turn of
the XX century. She was an Armenian
poet, he a local politician who saved
Lake Trasimeno from drying up. When
Vittoria arrived in Monte del Lago she
wrote about the beauty of the lake in her
poems. Considered the best known poet
of the 1800s in Italy, her style recalls
D’Annunzio and Leopardi. She married
Guido but then fell gravely ill and died.
He organised her funeral and then
committed suicide, and in the note he
left behind, asked to be buried next to
her.

FRANCO RASETTI
When it comes to peace, one of the most
memorable figures of this region was Franco
Rasetti, a physicist and botanist born in
Pozzuolo Umbro (Castiglione del Lago), where
an association dedicated to him has been set
up with a permanent exhibition and a bronze
bust. He frequented several universities,
including one in Berlin where he befriended
Albert Einstein and was one of the so-called
Via Panisperna Boys, young physicists under
the guidance of Enrico Fermi. However, when
he saw that much of his studies were oriented
towards weapons research he abandoned
physics and turned to botany. “No good could
ever come from the monstrous weapons of
destruction being created,” is how Rasetti
explained his decision, one that isolated him
from the rest of the scientific community.

The Park and its Islands
Il Parco del lago Trasimeno
Aeroporto Eleuteri - Castiglione del Lago
The largest of the six Regional Parks of Umbria, is one of the most important wetlands
areas in Europe for the presence of plant species, fauna and fish of great importance.
The total silence and the nature that it encompasses allows life to go on here without
having to turn to artificial methods of preservation. It is truly unique.
This former military airport is named after the famous Umbrian pilot Leopoldo Eleuteri and
is now a pristine nature reserve covering some 100 hectares along the Lake Trasimeno
shoreline. It is the departure point for walking trails, horseback excursions and cycling
tracks, and boasts numerous observation areas dedicated to the local fauna and flora.

Isola Maggiore
Isola Maggiore is under the jurisdiction of Tuoro sul Trasimeno
and is the only one of the three islands that has a stable population.
It still preserves the unique atmosphere of a 15th century fishing
village. In 1211 Saint Francis of Assisi came here at Lent to pray
and fast in peace and quiet, and there is now a lovely chapel
dedicated to his arrival on the island during a violent storm,
marking the place where he landed and knelt down in prayer.
One of the feathers in the cap of the island is the Irish-point lace
made by the local women. The Isola Maggiore Museum Circuit
indicates the most important places to see on the island: Museo
del Merletto (1), Chiesa di S. Michele Arcangelo (2), Casa del
Capitano (3), Chiesa di S. Salvatore (4).

PROVINCIA DI PERUGIA
The La Valle Oasis is the natural heart of the Trasimeno area: shallow water and extensive

birds. The Oasis is open all year round in the morning (9am to 1pm) and in the afternoon
(3pm to 6pm from October through May and from 4pm to 8pm from June through
September) and offers guided tours, audio tours and nature walks every Thursday and
Saturday morning from 15 June through 15 September. The Oasis has a 500m long
walkway over the marshland to the water’s edge where there is an observatory with 30
binoculars visitors may use. It also has a bird ringing station that is open to the public
on Saturday mornings as well as accommodations for twelve with a kitchen.

Isola Polvese
Isola Minore
The largest of the three islands of the Lake, this one falls under the jurisdiction of Castiglione del Lago.
It actually belongs to the Province of Perugia and is used all year round for tourism and environmental
purposes. It is home to various historical buildings such as the Church of San Secondo, the Olivetano
Monastery (1), the Church of San Giuliano and a Castle (2) dating to the XIV century. The island also
boasts the Porcinai Pond (3), an aquatic garden constructed there by Pietro Porcinai in the late 1950s.
The island is a fine example of sustainable environmental management and many educational activities
and research activities are organised there. It has a Study Centre (4) with accommodations, a Hostel
and centre with a meeting hall and classrooms.
This is the smallest of the
three islands, and not much
is known about it. Privately
owned, it is not inhabited.
It falls under the jurisdiction
of Passignano sul

Certified Environmental Quality
Since 2006, Trasimeno Lake has been associated with Living Lakes, a
network of 52 lakes all over the world which has been recognised by the
UN for its efforts in the field of the sustainable growth of important lakes,
wetlands and other sweet-water bodies.
As a recognition of the efforts towards adhering to the standards that
guarantee quality management and services that respect the environment,
a seal of quality has been created called the “Manifesto Ambientale”.
An efficient monitoring system to safeguard the quality
of the environment
The quality of the environment is under the constant and vigilant eye of
the ARPA (the Regional Authority for Environmental Protection), who takes
samples and analyses the various parameters of air, water and earth to
make sure they conform to both national and European norms. The results
of this data is fundamental in the establishment of policies aimed at the
improvement of the environment of the lake area.

The “Five Sails” of the Legambiente and Touring Club Italiano
The Guida Blu, published by Legambiente and Touring Club, is a guide to the quality
of the seas and lakes of Italy to ensure a vacation in a well cared-for environment. The
best resort areas of Italy are awarded “five sails” for their excellence. Of the 75 resort
areas surveyed in the country in 2014, only six were awarded the full five sails, and
Tuoro sul Trasimeno was at the top of the list, followed by Castiglione del Lago, Magione
and Passignano sul Trasimeno, with four sails.
The Touring Club Italiano Orange Flag
The “Bandiera Arancione” is a seal of environmental and tourism excellence awarded
by the Italian Touring Club to smaller towns and villages which distinguish themselves
for the quality of their hospitality. In the Trasimeno area, Città della Pieve and Panicale
earned this high honour from among the many fascinating hamlets and villages that
dot the region.
Italy’s Prettiest Villages
The Italian organisation known as the “I Borghi più Belli d’Italia” came about to raise awareness
of the great historical, artistic, environmental and cultural heritage the small towns and hamlets
of this country represent. In the Trasimeno area, Castiglione del Lago, Panicale and Paciano
were admitted as members of this exclusive club, further proof of the liveability of this region.
Not only can you relax walking, cycling and horseback riding (there are
various horseback riding centres and stables), but the sports you can enjoy
here are many and include golf, archery, tennis on land, or, on the water,
kite-surfing, sailing, windsurfing and waterskiing. Lovers of two and fourwheeled racing can go to the nearby autodromo and the crossdromo. The
Trasimeno area is also ideal for fishing – both amateur and professional.
There are many well-equipped bathing establishments along the shoreline.

Wine and Olive Oil
Vineyards have been cultivated on the
hills surrounding Lake Trasimeno since
time immemorial, thriving in the mild
climate of the lake and the optimum
exposure to the sun the slopes provide
to the vines, the many microclimates
an ideal habitat for a variety of different
types of wine grapes. Over the years,
there has been a marked improvement
in the quality and variety of the wine
production which has resulted in new
Colli del Trasimeno wines: four whites
(Dry, Select White, Sparkling and
Vinsanto), five reds (Red, Select Red,
Red Reserve, Sparkling and Novello),
a Spumante Classico and a selection
of single varietals (Grechetto, Merlot,
Cabernet Sauvignon, Gamay, Merlot
Riserva, Cabernet Sauvignon Riserva
and Gamay Riserva).
Olive oil is one of the Trasimeno region’s oldest
and most typical products. Vast expanses of
groves cloak the hillsides and characterise the
landscape, offering a fine quality extra virgin
olive oil that has been certified and guaranteed
by the DOP (Denomination of Protected
Origin)Umbria seal and with the geographic
Colli del Trasimeno denomination. The quality
olive oils are made using mostly the Dolce
Agogia, Frantoio, Leccino and Moraiolo varietals.

The Fagiolina of Trasimeno
Cured meats
Honey
Fish has been a vital source of
nutrition for the local people since
time immemorial. Today’s
professional fishermen work together
united by a cooperative. The fish they
catch are regina carp, eel, tench, royal
bass, pike and silversides. The regina
carp is best cooked in porchetta and
is Trasimeno’s best known fish. It
roe is used to make soups and as
dressing for pasta dishes. The area’s
famous “tegamaccio”, which gets its
name from the crock pot in which it
is prepared, is a delicious fish soup.
Cultivated here since the times of the
Etruscans and the Greeks, this tiny
bean thrives in the ideal climate and
terrain of Lake Trasimeno. It can be
easily recognized by its small size
and various colours.The fagiolina is
used by gourmets and great chefs in
both traditional dishes and brand new
modern recipes. The Trasimeno
Fagiolina Consortium was founded
in 2002 to safeguard its production
and guarantee its quality, and since
2002 it has been part of the Slow
Food.
The pig has always been a preferred
animal (Divin Porcello) and its meat
is the “Queen of the Dinner Table.”
Over the centuries, man has perfected
the art of conserving the meat and
processing it into fine cured meats:
prosciutto, sausage, salami, coppa
and capocollo made by many small
local processing plants.
The overall mild climate and the
composition of the woods and
plants in the Trasimeno area have
led to the production of various
types of high quality honey. The
millefiori variety is the most diffuse
type of honey made by local
beekeepers, but there is also
chestnut honey, sunflower honey,
acacia, heather, clover,
honeysuckle, arbutus berry,
sainfoin and honeydew honey.
Then there is royal jelly, propolis
and hydromel, an ancient
beverage with mythological
connotations which has been
enjoyed since time immemorial.

Festa del Tulipano
Meeting di Primavera
Every year, in the evocative setting of the
basement of the Palazzo Orca, “living
paintings” can be admired which depict
scenes of the Passion, Death and
Resurrection of Christ. Each of the six
“paintings” portrays one particular scene:
the Last Supper, the Garden of
Gethsemane, Ecce Homo, the
Flagellation, the Pietà and Resurrection.
The lighting is provided by torches and
candles held by some forty figures. The
“paintings” are “reproductions” of 16 and
17th century works of Italian art.
The Tulip Festival has been celebrated every
April since 1956. It is organized by the
Castiglione del Lago pro-loco association and
attracts thousands of visitors every year. The
event features an opening-day parade of
allegorical floats decorated with thousands of
colourful tulips by the five neighborhoods.
Around town the tavernas open their doors and
the streets are enlivened with local street actors
playing ancient games in vintage costumes.
Tulip Palio.
This annual international meeting at the
Castiglione del Lago airport features some
1500 light aircraft and attracts a wide range
of visitors enamored of flight in its many forms.
There will be some 100 stands offering all
sorts of products and equipment for flying, an
air show including aerial acrobatics and many
aircraft on the ground to see from up close.
Visitors, even those who have never flown
before, can also climb in a plane and enjoy a

30 April - 3 May
At Castiglione del Lago, on the 1st of May
weekend in 1984, hundreds of kite enthusiasts
gathered from around the world to “paint the
sky” and an event was born. Every year at the
same time thousands of kites and hot-air
balloons fly high in the sky in a spectacular
show of colours and shapes, all framed by the

Isola del Libro Trasimeno
Infiorata del Corpus Domini
Infiorata di San Luigi Gonzaga
The Trasimeno Book Island is an event
aimed at promoting books and reading
and takes place on Isola Maggiore. It
was organised by the Isola del Libro
Association founded by book seller Italo
Marri and the first edition of this event
in September 2013 was very well
received by an enthusiastic public.
Literary cafés, musical events,
exhibitions and much more made up
this cultural happening, and highlights
included talks by famous authors,
journalists and figures from the world
of culture and politics.
The traditional carpeting of the main street of
several historic centres with large religious
designs made of flower petals, known as the
Infiorata, is an increasingly popular event
animated with a strong spirit of volunteering
as the night is spent carefully laying the petals
and leaves, donated by some of the major
flower companies and gathered over the
preceding months, into intricate designs.
This very beautiful and particular yearly
celebration is in honour of St. Luigi Gonzaga,
Patron of the Casalino Quarter, and since the
Middle Ages had involved adorning the main
street of the city with “paintings” made with
colourful and fragrant flower petals. The evening
before the festival, the inhabitants of the Casalino
quarter cover the pavement of via Pietro
Vannucci with carpets of perfectly placed flower
petals for all to admire until the following
evening. The event is enlivened with music.

THE REGIONAL MUSEUM OF CERAMICS IN DERUTA
This interesting museum is located in the renovated 14th century
convent of San Francesco in the centre of Deruta and is the oldest
of its kind in all of Italy. Founded in 1898, it holds more than 6000
pieces. The museum offers visitors an historical tour that traces the
evolution of the art of ceramics in Deruta from archaic times to the
present. There are several theme areas, such as the reconstruction
of an old pharmacy, the section dedicated to ceramic floors and
those of votive tiles. The museum is characterized by a unique fourstorey metal tower which houses various store rooms that can be
visited by the public and a special room dedicated to research.
The tour of the museum also includes the Archaeological Area of
the San Salvatore Kilns, buildings that date to the late 13th century
and to the early 18th century which were, fortunately, discovered
in 2008. The Archaeological Area is linked to the Museum via an
underground tunnel.
CITY ART GALLERY
The Pinacoteca Comunale di Deruta has its seat in the 14th century
Palazzo dei Consoli. It houses a collection of art that includes a fresco
done by Pietro Vannucci, known as Il Perugino (Eterno and Santi
Romano and Rocco), two works by Niccolò di Liberatore also known
as L’Alunno (Madonna dei Consoli and Gonfalone di Sant’Antonio
Abate), and the Franciscan Missal, a 13the century parchment, and
the Lione Pascoli collection.
SANCTUARY OF THE MADONNA DEI BAGNI
This sanctuary dates to the mid-1600s and houses more than 600
votive tiles of great historical, artistic and religious value all made by
Derutese artisans for the faithful in thanks for blessing bestowed
upon them”.

DERUTA: THE ART OF CERAMICS
The origins of Deruta remain a mystery,
although Etruscan and Roman archaeological
remains dating to between the IV century BCE
and the IV century CE, some of which are on
display in the atrium of City Hall, do offer some
clues. What we do know is that “diruta” means
ruined, destroyed (as do its derivatives: ruta,
rupta, direpta and druida).
The city boasts a rich past and the production
of artistic as well as traditional ceramics have
made it famous the world over. Much of this
heritage can still be seen in the town’s churches,
the facades of its buildings and the museum
dedicated to the history of ceramics. One can
see the extraordinary level of this art by touring
the many workshops and factories along almost
every street of Deruta, and watch the artisans
at work on the various phases of ceramics
production. Not only, but the town is also
dotted with many examples of the fine work
done here.
