W
hen we first broached the idea
of an English newspaper for the
Trasimeno area, the response was swift
and positive.
Many people are now getting involved,
from the growing
English-speaking
community of the Lake towns, to business
owners and non profit organizations.
The biggest challenge ahead of us now
is to print a paper to capture the readers’
interest.
We hope to come to be read by both
the permanent and temporary residents
of the Trasimeno region primarily by
giving information on upcoming events
throughout the area.
We are also launching a Classified Section
and a letters page to be printed in every
issue.
So please settle down with this first
issue. We’d love to hear from our readers

The Great Exhibition of the Umbria Region
A fresco located in Paciano might be the ancestor of modern comics

he exhibition from February 2nd to August 31st
at The National Gallery of Umbria is dedicated
to Bernardino di Betto, known as the Pintoricchio.
Vasari, the most important critic of the era, tells us
that the name Pintoricchio, or “little painter”, is due
to his frail physique, and he accepted this, signing
himself as Pintoricchio. He was born in Perugia to a
middle class family that was not in the best financial
shape because his father had lost the family fortune.
Not being from a rich family, Pintoricchio started to
work in the workshop (bottega) of another painter,
which was a custom of that era, since there were no
art schools, and the only way to learn was through
another painter.
He was born sometime between 1454 and 1460, a

A
scanio della Corgna was certainly one of the most
famous men in Europe in the 16th century. He
specialised in architecture and military engineering, was
a master of arms and invincible swordsman, a humanist
and patron. Between 1536 and 1571, the year of his
death, he took part in almost all the wars of that period,
fighting for different countries in the manner of the
medieval soldier of fortune. His ability with the sword
was so famous that three thousand people travelled from
Rome, Florence, Siena and Perugia to see his duel against
Giannetto Taddei, who was guilty of insubordination.
This event was recorded in every detail and immortalized
in the Palace’s Hall of Investiture, also called “The Hall
of Ascanio’s deeds”.
He was captured by the Sienese in Chiusi and brought to
Porto Ercole. He was carried out by a thousand infantry
and a hundred horsemen who were nevertheless worried
about having such an important prisoner. They made a
“present” of him to the King of France who, of course,
was quick to set him free. He was so famous that when
he died his solemn funeral, as decreed by the Pope, lasted
nine days: after the first four days, during which the body
was publicly displayed in Rome, the hearse began its
three-day journey to Perugia.
Orders were given for all the bells of the churches along
the way to be rung, and for the Bishops of Narni and Todi
to come to meet the procession. In Perugia the coffin was
borne through every quarter of the city by an endlessly
alternating succession of priests and noblemen, before
being laid in the Della Corgna Chapel in the Church of
St. Francis where it still rests.
Ascanio was born on 31st July 1514 into one of the oldest
and most important families of Perugia which originated
in the north of the Trasimeno area, and when he was only
twenty-one he started his brilliant military career. He
quickly achieved the highest rank, “Maestro di Campo
Generale”, that is to say commander of all infantry, in
three different campaigns: in the war between the Papal
State and the kingdom of Naples when he forced the Pope
to capitulate; in the great crusade of Malta when it was
besieged by the Turks; and in his last important venture,
the battle of Lepanto, for which he prepared the plan of
attack and the arrangement of the fleet, but which also
cost him his life. Thanks to his uncle, Gian Maria Ciocchi
Del Monte, who was elected Pope in 1550 with the name
of Julius III, he became Governor of Rome and Lord
of the State of Castiglione del Lago, the territory of the
future marquisate.

TOWER OF THE LOMBARDS
T
he Tower of Pian di Carpine was constructed
around 1200, and the name Lombard or
Lombardi seems to originate from 1688 in memory
of the Passignano nobleman Marcello Lombardi
who was killed there. His family were at the time
proprietors of the tower. It was occupied in 1370 by
the Perugian exile Cinolo Montesperelli, who used
the tower as a base for reprisal attacks against the
Raspanti government in Perugia. In 1800 it became a
convent, but the violent earthquake of 1846 damaged
the tower badly and the nuns were transferred.
With the construction of the Abbey an underground
passage was built to link the tower and the castle.
The Tower is currently part of the Open Museum
system of the Trasimeno area.

uring one of the first field
trips of my Tour Operator
classes, which I was taking
in the Lake Trasimeno area, I
may have discovered one of
the secrets to staying young.
I met a young man, 75 years
of age, who gives tours of the
“Museo della Pesca” – the
local fisherman’s museum
in the town of San Feliciano.
At first, not knowing his age,
my tour group thought the
fisherman in front of us was in
his early sixties. He had a very
enthusiastic way of presenting
himself and he was in good
physical shape.

one-man show, he also has a
vast knowledge regarding the

the last three years. Before then, if you

two friends and partners have a common
passion for lake Trasimeno, the place
where they were born and raised and have
lived all their lives. They decided to invest
and purchased four boats for personal
cruises, and the fun is now guaranteed.
Iuri, 33, and Roberto, 44, explain: “the
idea came
to
us
looking
at these

cm of water, and we believed that we
could start with personalized tours. We
started in 2006, and all we can say is
that so far it has been a great success”.
We asked them about their typical
clients. The dynamic duo, who
operate in Castiglione del Lago,
Tuoro, Passignano, San Feliciano and
S. Arcangelo, told us that they “have
different types of clients, from groups that
want to discover the beauty of the lake
(bird-watching and fishing are some of the
activities), to a younger crowd that wants
to celebrate a birthday or an anniversary.
Others like to take a dip while on board,
and later relax with an aperitif, talking to
friends and listening to good music. Each
boat can accommodate up to 12 people.
“With different itineraries”, the two captains
explain, “we can offer tours with snacks
and drinks on board, and give information
about the history, traditions and culture
of the lake and its environment, and we
have guides who speak several languages.
For the food we use local catering
services to ensure the quality.” Iuri and
Roberto are the guides and animators but
can also be very discrete – they guarantee.
“We have had couples that wanted to
enjoy a romantic trip. In addition to other
services, we offer taxi rides towards the
restaurants and hotels on the islands of lake
Trasimeno”. The enthusiasm on board is
contagious. The cell phone keeps ringing.
There’s another reservation. “Tonight six
couples will celebrate, with candle light
and champagne and the magical lake
atmosphere ” . Curious?

which ranges from Etruscan and
Roman times to recent history.
Rino’s presentation was a mix of Italian
and Umbrian dialect, and he painted the
life on the lake as if we were actually
living in those times. It was a one-hour
tour, and one of the most entertaining
presentations I have ever been to. Rino
had stories about doctors who would
prescribe a wonderful treatment for
patients suffering from stress - just
spend a few days on Lake Trasimeno
and forget about pills of every kind.
Rino seemed to have his own theory
about the benefits of eating the fish
from Lake Trasimeno, with effects on
your health being almost miraculous.
With Rino’s emphasis on highlighting
the positives, we were taken in by his
world, which was a mix of true facts
and legends. As the last part of the
act, Rino showed us the evolution of
fishing nets through the centuries. He
showed us the last piece of equipment,
a very heavy fishing net with weights
attached to it, which is launched from
the boat to several yards away. We
were surprised when our group of
ten was asked to move close together
and step a few yards away from
the demonstration boat inside the
museum. Little did we know that we
would be the fish ready to be caught
— with a perfect launch that trapped
us all inside the net!
When the show was over and we had
the chance to talk for a few minutes,
we were invited to fish with Rino,
who still goes out every day. Then
Rino shared with us a secret “the
secret about keeping so young.” Rino
said he has the best job in the world,
he has fished and sold his daily catch
for over 40 years. Rino has always
fished on his own and never worked
for anyone.
He fishes just a few hours in the
evening and the morning and then
spends the rest of the day cruising
round his little town. Some of Rino’s
friends and colleagues lived to be 96
and 103. I am now considering buying
a small fishing boat.

unrepeatable. That is, she knows
how to steal the beauty as she
passes it.
But it is Trasimeno where Erika
has found her greatest expressive
strength. The lake, in her pictures,
glows with the intense colours of
summer, becomes soft and delicate
at the first light of dawn, becomes
inflamed at sunset, often reflecting
incredible colours, and becomes
dark and gloomy and sometimes
raging during storms. It darkens in
the delicate and restful atmosphere of
the evening when the last glimmers
of light leave enchanting waves
on the water.

route she has chosen for us.
Erika Ansorg was born in 1935 in
Berlin. In 1954 she started working
with a patent lawyer in Munich,
later as head of a large office of
Patent Lawyers. In 1960, she began
working with her husband in his
office of technological translations
and, at the same time, studied

as an interpreter and translator of
the English language. In 1969, they
came to live at La Cima, in the
hills above Tuoro sul Trasimeno. In
1990 she moved into the village of
Tuoro.
Starting as a hobby, photography
has become a real passion and, even
though she is not a professional, her
photographs have reached the four
corners of the world, above all as
postcards. Her love of nature and,
of course, that wonderful part of
the world which is Lake Trasimeno
and Umbria, have helped her in
perfecting her choice and quality
of subjects. Therefore it is not
technique which is her strong point,
but her acute sense of observation.
Trasimeno Blues Festival Different localities around Lake Trasimeno. 24 July-3 August

rasimeno Blues Festival is one of the most important of its kind in Italy. The Festival
is performed in different evocative localities around
the lake, such as Castiglione del Lago, Città della Pieve,
Magione, Paciano, Panicale, Passignano sul Trasimeno,
Piegaro and Tuoro sul Trasimeno. Every evening for
eleven days, the festival sees the participation of wellknown artists of national and international importance. In
the last few years artists such as Maceo Parker, Robben
Ford, Larry Carlton, Sugar Blue, Brian Auger, Creedence
Clearwater Revived, Alex Britti, Cheryl Porter, Eugenio
Finardi, Gegé Telesforo, Fairport Convention, the James
Taylor Quartet, Carl Palmer, Them, Ten Years After, Charlie
Musselwhite have spellbound their audiences at the lake.
All concerts are free except for one special concert each
year, a concert of particular importance due to the presence
of an international star. After
midnight other concerts take
place in the local venues. The
warm notes of Blues, together
with visits to the places of
artistic and natural beauty that
the area has to offer, make for
an unforgettable time, with a
spirit of joy, peace and harmony.

Settling down in your house in Umbria

A couple from Great Britain is about to purchase a farmhouse near Lake Trasimeno.
Here below are their main concerns about the matter.
Charles: Andrea, do you have any recommendations for purchasing a house in Umbria?
Well it depends what you are looking for: if you’d like to live in a village by lake Trasimeno
or in one of the many groups of houses situated in the surrounding hills then you should buy
an apartment in the centro storico where you can fully enjoy the Italian way of life. While the
church or town hall bells chime away in the background you can walk to the shops, the bank,
or go for a swim in the lake without having to drive a car. Especially, if you wish to relocate
to Umbria and don’t want to do too much driving around, I suggest a ground floor apartment.
Coral: how much should we expect to pay for an apartment ?

TRASIMENO CHARACTERS
Terry Lane has been living in the area for a dozen years.
Can you tell us about yourself? I began my career in the theatre and became Director. In 1962 I built Edinburgh’s original Traverse Theatre, became its first Artistic Director and gave
the theatre its international reputation as one of the most important avant-garde
experimental theatres in Europe. I have directed with the Pitlochry Festival
Theatre, the R.S.C. in London and was first Director at the Midlands Arts
Centre in Birmingham.
Where do you come from? I was born in Essex, but had Scottish antecedents, a Scottish wife and three
Scottish children. I have 3 Scottish and 3 Australian grandchildren.
And your wife? We met in our first jobs in the theatre. She was the actress Rosamund Dickson.
Then in the seventies we began our own bookshop, “bookworms” in Helensburgh, which I ran for thirty years.
Why did you come to live in Italy? I came to finish a book, most of which I had researched in the UK. It is a theatrical
biography of the late Stephen Joseph which was published as The Full Round. I have
subsequently published my history of the founding of the Traverse Theatre under the
title of Side by Side
Why did you choose Italy? I thought the atmosphere would be more conducive to creativity and I couldn’t afford to
go on living in the UK.
How often had you been here before? Never.
But you spoke the language? Not a word.
So how did you decide on this area? I saw an advert in a magazine and came here to look at a house. It was awful, but in
travelling around I saw an old farmhouse which I liked. It wasn’t until I had bought it that I discovered it had no electricity and no plumbing. I spent the first four months living like a gypsy and making it habitable. After four years I had
an offer for it I couldn’t refuse and began looking at alternatives. I have the capacity to
do most of the rebuilding myself.
Do you have any regrets at having left the U.K?
None at all. Rather, I wish I had been born in Italy.
What are you working on now?
Ten years ago I started painting portraits in oils and I have exhibited in Cortona and at
the Palazzo della Corgna in Castiglione del Lago. I have several unfinished canvases
and commissions to complete. If you were on a desert island what book would you take with you?
I am on a desert island surrounded by marvelous medieval towns, great works of art, and
Etruscan remains. My constant companions are the Works of William Shakespeare and
the films of Woody Allen and Fred Astaire. For lightweight viewing I watch the films of
the Coen Brothers, Terry Gilliam and Krzysztof Kieslowski.

he residents of the Casalino «terziere» (district)
organise floral decorations on the pavement of
Via Pietro Vannucci, the main street, in honour of their
Patron Saint. The origins of this event are lost in the past
when, on the occasion of solemn spring processions, the
town streets were decorated with flower petals. Today
skilled artists still outline sketches, drawing inspiration
from Renaissance paintings and, in particular, from the

The Cesare Caporali Theatre
This theatre was originally called the “Theatre of the Sun” and was
built in 1690 by some of the area’s most prosperous families. The stage
curtain is of particular interest: it was painted in the early 1800’s by Pier
Vittori, and depicts the Panicale born soldier Boldrino Panieri receiving
the keys of Perugia. The curtains were the model for the curtains in
the Morlacchi Theatre of Perugia. The plaster stucco was executed by
Alceste Ricci. The theatre is a miniature replica of the grandest theatres
in Europe and has to be seen to be believed.
Today the theatre hosts concerts and plays by local and travelling
companies. Panicale’s local theatre group, Compagnia del Sole, continues
to go from strength to strength, playing both classic and modern pieces.
Its most recent performance, the German “Don Giovanni Returns From
the War”, was the first time the play had ever been performed in Italian.
Attending a concert or a play is highly recommended, regardless of
whether or not you understand Italian. Most of the seats are situated in
galleries or balconies on three levels, and watching any performance is
like stepping back in time. During the day, visits to the theatre can be
arranged through the local tourist office.
