ugust will be a month rich in events for the towns surrounding Lake Tasimeno, events to satisfy
the interest and personal tastes of the thousands of tourists that crowd the shores and the hills of
the lake every year. Concerts, theatrical performances, folk dancers, historical reenactments, blues
concerts, street markets and fairs, sailing regattas, and many more events will be held in several locations. The most important of these events are covered on the last page. But let’s not forget the calm
and quiet of our numerous beaches, or the numerous farm houses or holiday houses where you can

Corciano Festival
A traditional August meeting of art, music and events
T
he Corciano Festival has taken
place in Corciano in August
every year since 1965. The festival
is held in the magical atmosphere of
this beautiful medieval hill town: one
of the most interesting and best-kept
secrets of Umbria. The Corciano Festival evokes moments of everyday
life in an unchanged environment,
in which the citizens are not merely
actors, but the true protagonists of
a lively historical performance. The
participants are clearly deeply involved in their roles. The festival has
expanded in every direction since its
debut in 1950, and now offers painting and sculpture exhibitions, theatre
performances, concerts, historical
parades and conventions on art. An
international competition for bands
playing original compositions and
a competition for poetry dedicated
to the city are two recent additions
to the festival. During the evenings
visitors and locals can also try dishes
inspired by Middle
Ages and Renaissance cuisine, cooked
for the occasion by
famous Italian chefs

Corciano Festival.

The Castle Keep of Castiglione del Lago
A
fter 11 years the
keep finally reopens: public access
had been limited since
damage caused by the
1997 earthquake.
Eleven years later and
it is finally possible to
climb to the top of the
Castiglione del Lago
Keep again. The Keep
is the most imposing
part of the medieval
fortress that was damaged in the earthquake in 1997 – the same earthquake
that struck the Basilica in Assisi. The triangular Keep,
standing at 29 meters, was built together with the fortress on the orders of Federico II of Svabia just before
1250.
The structure contains an impressively broad spiral
staircase, and from the top you can enjoy a unique
panorama that allows you to see the entire lake and
the surrounding hills, as well as offering a particularly
evocative and domineering view of the town of Castiglione del Lago itself, spread out below you almost
like a map – Google Earth has got nothing on this. The
Keep is part of Castiglione del Lago’s “monumental
path” or scenic route.

A Medieval Adventurer

The famous Mercenary Captain

iacomo Paneri,
nicknamed Boldrino,
was born in Panicale in 1331 and
remains in history
as one of most famous and feared
mercenary Captains of his time.
The bloody vendetta in which his
father was killed
led him to join a
company of mercenaries whilst
still very young.
His powerful physique, his fearlessness and ability in
the use of weapons soon became
evident.
After being under the command of the Englishman John
Hawkwood for some time he formed his own band of mercenaries, which became immediately notorious and much in
demand by the principal Italian states, particularly the Papal
state. In the service of pope Urban VI he plundered the Marche
region and didn’t show any mercy to his Umbrian homeland
or its neighbour Tuscany, attacking Montepulciano, Cortona
and the Siena area with great ferocity.
He vigorously opposed the armies of the Papal challenger
Clement VII and subsequently became General of the Ecclesiastical Armies in 1381.
Such was the fear that he instilled that virtually every city
preferred to pay him handsomely in “protection” money,
rather than confront him. Many Comunes, or local authorities, including Perugia, actually paid him a salary just to guarantee his neutrality. However, this didn’t prevent him from
attacking Chiusi in defence of the exiled Michelozzo Michellotti, devastating the islands and castles of Trasimeno, and
threatening Perugia itself, until the authorities offered him
even more money to calm him down.
The episodes in the life of this invincible mercenary are manifold: he moved from one part of Italy to another, betraying
any city without scruple if another city paid him more (fairly
common practice among mercenaries); this behaviour led to
his imprisonment in Siena. Despite this, it should be born in
mind that when he fell ill in 1385 he was taken to Perugia to
recover, and when later he heard that Perugia and its lands
were under attack from the Breton mercenary Beltotto, he
abandoned his then-employer Recanati and, after a forced
march down to Umbria, defeated the enemy without requesting any compensation - at least from what we can tell.
Other adventures and victories followed until, on the 3rd
of June 1389, he fell into a trap laid by Pope Boniface IX’s
brother, Andrea Tomacelli, the Signore of Macerata, who invited Boldrino to a banquet and then had him beaten to death.
The reaction of Boldrino’s troops on hearing the news was
fearsome; their anger was spent on the lands of Macerata, destroying houses and killing anybody who stood in their way.
XXXI International Folk Festival
In the Medieval fortress “Rocca del Leone”

he “Rassegna Internazionale
del
Folklore” (International
Folk Festival) began in
1978 on the initiative of
the Castiglione del Lago
town council and the
Trasimeno Tourist Office.
Organised by the “Agilla
e Trasimeno” folk group,
this festival promotes cultural exchanges between
folk groups.
It also gives the traditions
and cultures of different
countries the opportunity
to become better known. Shows are held in the town’s
evocative medieval fortress before going on a short tour
around Umbria.
The International Folk Festival is well known both in
Italy and abroad. Thanks to the originality and quality of
its shows this festival is one of the most important exhibitions not only in Umbria but also in Italy. Over the last
30 editions the Castiglione del Lago Rocca or fortress
has played host to the most important folk groups in the
world, including everything from Maori dancers from
New Zealand to Chinese folk groups, from the myriad
cultures of Central and South America to Australian aborigines.
The shows begin at 9.15pm inside the Rocca del Leone
medieval fortress in Castiglione del Lago, where tickets
can be bought one hour before the show starts.
On the days of the festival the groups parade along the
town streets at 12.00am every day.
The “Agilla e Trasimeno” group was formed in 1957 in order
to revive some forms of rural and popular culture in Umbria,
with particular regard to the lake Trasimeno area. The simple
costumes are modelled on those worn by the inhabitants of the
area around the lake between the 19th and the 20th century.
The legend
The group takes its name from an ancient Etruscan legend that
tells of prince Trasimeno, a son of the god Tirreno, who stopped
near a lake during an excursion in the lands of the centre of
Italy. The prince met the water nymph Agilla, who lived on an
island on the lake. Prince Trasimeno fell madly in love with
Agilla, but theirs was an impossible union – she was part of
the water, he belonged to the land. Yet his love was so strong
that he attempted to break the rules, and become a creature of
the water like his lover. But his attempt ended in failure: he
drowned in the lake, and his body was never discovered… in
the evenings of August, when a light wind caresses the trees and
the waters of the lake, a sad, melancholy lament can sometimes
be heard, and people say this is the cry of Agilla, searching for

published by Edizioni Duca della Corgna.
PROGRAMME
They even threatened to destroy the city of Macerata itself and
only the courage of its womenfolk saved the city: mourning
and crying they carried the corpse of Boldrino to his soldiers,
who, grief-stricken, abandoned their vendetta and spent many
days in mourning over the corpse of their late commander.
Boldrino’s men held him in such high regard that, even after his death, none of them would accept commands from
any other would-be leader, and for three years they carried his ashes with them in an urn to bring good fortune
in battle. His ashes were eventually buried near Panicale
and his army, after these three long years of following the
soundless orders of a ghost-Captain, finally dispersed.

Costantino and his magic hands
L
iving in the Lake Trasimeno
area, I am discovering time
after time some little treasures
surrounding the Trasimeno and
Orvieto area. In my latest trip
to the Orvieto area, I stopped in
Castel Viscardo, which may be
considered the Italian Capital of
handmade terracotta tiles.
In the last few years, four new
fornos (kilns where terracotta tiles
or bricks are cooked) opened, and
production is increasing to meet
the rising demand from building
sites, especially from old farmhouses that need to be rebuilt.
The other facet of the artisan’s work
can be found about 30 miles north
of Orvieto, in the town of Ficulle.
The tradition of handmade terracotta pots and tableware was once
the only important industry in this

The AZ Vignaroli restaurant
I
n 2003 grandmother Rina celebrated
her 82nd birthday and 50 continuous
years as chef. Now she is resting, understandably, but whenever she can, she still
visits “her” kitchen. Opened in 1982 by
her son Enzo, the Vignaroli restaurant has
remained very much a family-run operation, and has always been run in strict accordance with the three most important
conditions for a good restaurant: respect
for tradition, genuine ingredients and
courteousness. The restaurant’s motto,
“enter as a customer, leave as a friend”, is
more than just a slogan. Situated near
the Historic Centre, the restaurant has
two large dining rooms at different levels as well as a garden area that is open
in the summer months. Patrizia and Arturo, Enzo’s children and Grandmother
Rina’s grandchildren, follow the culinary
tradition, offering a menu based on lake
fish, with dishes like Taglierini (homemade thin ribbon pasta) dressed with
“poor man’s caviar”, the local name
for “Queen Carp” roe; the extraordinary fish from lake Trasimeno, always
called the “Regina” or queen, since it
can weigh over 40 pounds. The carp is
also prepared “in porchetta”: a traditional recipe that requires knowledge and a
long cooking time. An excellent alternative to lake fish is the Chianina beef,
that here is prepared in different forms,
classic Florentine steak, filet mignon,
Chianina “tips” in Chianti sauce, and the
superb tagliata, sliced steak served with
rocket, balsamic vinegar, cherry tomatoes and shaved “parmigiano” cheese,
or with “porcini” mushrooms, dressed
with hot extra virgin olive oil, rosemary
and juniper, or in other sauces depending on the season and the chef’s inspiration. Other recommended items include

small town. And in particular, the colours
of the pottery in this area – a dark green
and a light brown – are the result of the particular minerals present in the local soil.
The local pottery tradition dates back hundreds
years, but today only two bottegas (workshops) are left in town.
In one of them, we went to visit
Costantino del Croce, who owns
and runs the shop. He started at a
very early age, from a family tradition that dates back to 1834. As
a young boy, Costantino helped
his father load the first wood furnace that was only replaced with
a gas furnace about 30 years ago.
Originally, production covered the everyday pottery and
glassware used by the locals,
but now it is of purely decorative use, and for the most
part purchased by visitors to the town.

truffle, fagiolina del Trasimeno (a local
tiny white bean with a black eye) with
perch fish or sausage, and, to please all
tastes, deboned pork stuffed with pork
loin, wild fennel and rosemary baked in
a wood burning oven, and lots more recipes depending on the season. Each dish is
paired with its own wine menu chosen by
Arturo, selected from the restaurant cellar that features about 100 labels, mostly
Tuscan and Umbrian wines and a few
from other Italian regions.
After being introduced to Costantino’s world,
he took us to the part of the old house that used
to be the barn before being turned into the
workshop by his father. The furnace and the
two potter’s wheels are still situated in the same
location. When the potter’s wheel was turned
the real show started, as Costantino’s magic
hands moulded different shapes for us, from
simple candleholders to beautiful vases, in
just a few minutes. We were fascinated by how
simple he made it look, with just a slight movement of one finger to tell the clay where to go.
I decided that I needed to try it, and Costantino helped me mould a simple little vase.
After I had had my fun playing with the wet
clay, Costantino brought up a more serious
matter: the tradition is slowly disappearing. In
his bottega there are two potter’s wheels. Only
one is in use, since none of the local youngsters
are willing to learn the trade, which can be difficult to learn at first and requires commitment.
Costantino, who is now in his seventies, told
us he was too tired to try to teach again. He
has tried, through several regionally financed
classes, to teach his art to new generations.
But once the classes were over, there was no
continuity.
Costantino invited all of us to learn the basics with him if we wanted. One wheel is always there for anyone who loves to play with

are willing to learn some of the secrets of this
ancient tradition.

Città della Pieve
The “Palio dei Terzieri”
The most important historical evocation of the area.
T
his is the most important event in the Città della
Pieve calendar, and the 38th edition will take
place this year from August 12th to the 24th. The
Palio starts with the Lancio della sfida tra i Terzieri,
the “Declaration of the Challenge between the Districts” on August 15th. The town is divided into three
districts, hence the name terzieri. The challenge is declared in the presence of representatives of City officials wearing renaissance costumes (The Podestà, the
Capitano del Popolo, and the Priori) and representatives from each district: the heralds from the Casalino
and Castello districts will challenge the Borgo Dentro
district, the winners of the 2007 Palio. The magnificent Historical Parade takes place on the following
Sunday, with the citizens of each district dressed in
costumes representing all walks of Renaissance life
– from noblemen on horseback to peasants with wagons pulled by enormous bulls, from ragged, leering
beggars to soldiers on huge full scale siege towers
- parading through the town streets. Following the parade, there is the Caccia del Toro or Bull Hunt,
the competition that will decide the winner of the prestigious Palio. The competition plays out over
three heats: each district is represented by three archers, who attempt to hit a moving life-size cutout wooden bull.
History of the Palio
The first documented record of the existence of the different districts in Castel della
Pieve (the old name for Città della Pieve) dates back to 1250, in the definitive declaration of submission to Perugia, following the brief period of freedom enjoyed by the
city under the protection of Federico II of Svevia. In the period of the free city states
Castel della Pieve was aligned with the Ghibelline faction against the Guelph faction in
Perugia, and modelled itself on Siena as an example of a powerful city in the centre of
Italy. The layout of the city in those years loosely followed the outline of an eagle, the
symbol of the Emperor, flying menacingly towards Rome. The districts are traced out
by the parts of the eagle: the Castello district is the head, given that it was the area of the
wealthy knights; the body is the Borgo Dentro district, where the middle classes lived;
and the tail is the Casalino district, representing the Pedoni (farmers who lived in the
town and were known for competing in archery contests).
Beetwen the 15th and the 16th centuries, the districts of
Città della Pieve emulated Siena further in the first form of
the modern Palio: the bull hunt, hunting powerful Chianina
bulls (a rudimentary bullfight using lances, later replaced
by bows and arrows).
The modern Palio recreates this event partially as a tribute
to Castel della Pieve’s most famous son, the painter Pietro
Vannucci, know as The Perugino (circa 1450- 1523). His
famous masterpieces are the inspiration for the costumes
of the 700 protagonists that take part in the event. During the Palio, the whole town travels back in time, and the
renaissance atmosphere is felt everywhere: the streets are
decorated with the different districts’ flags, proudly marking out their territory; there are renaissance concerts and
performances; and the taverns recreate the period to perfection, with goblets of wine and traditional food served by
wenches and wastrels in full costume.

Do I have to pay I.C.I.?

Simon: I read that the new Government lead by Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has abolished I.C.I.
but friends of mine told me that their commercialista (accountant) stressed that they still had to pay this
tax on their property in Italy. What should I do?
Dott. Antonioni: I.C.I. is the Imposta Comunale sugli Immobili and it is the equivalent of
house rates in the UK. This tax is calculated on the rendita catastale or rate-able value of your
property, which you can find in the Atto di Compravendita i.e. the title deeds of your property. Every year you pay the acconto (deposit) in June and the saldo (final payment) in December.
Simon: I understand but do I have to pay it this year or not?
Dott. Antonioni: If you own only one house in Italy and you have been registered as a residente in the
Ufficio Anagrafe (registry office) of the local Town Hall since at least 1st January 2008 you don’t have
to pay this tax in June. On the other hand if you own a holiday house in Italy you still have to pay it.
Simon: Good! I bought my house as prima casa and I am an official resident here so I can finally fire
my commercialista!
Dott. Antonioni: Wait, no you shouldn’t shoot him/her yet as he/she may still come in handy in December!
Simon: What do you mean?
Dott. Antonioni: Well, the leader of the winning coalition that won the general elections this year must
now keep his electoral promises after his recent victory. One of the promises was to ban the hated I.C.I.
However the payment of this tax has technically only been suspended at the moment and depending on
the reaction of local Councils who have lost one of their main revenues, the government may becompelled to reintroduce it in December of this year or next year!

Can you tell us about yourself?
I have been writing and collecting books of classical literature since I was a
schoolboy. Consequently, to be economically independent and still to have
enough time for writing I became a teacher. After radio-plays in the ‘60s my
first book “Gegenmunchen” was published in 1970 and was then followed
by about twenty more works, including fiction, poems and essays.
Where do you come from?
I was born in Munich and didn’t leave my hometown until we moved here
in 1986.
And your wife?
I met her at my publishing house and in 1973 we founded the first “Authors’

Bookshop” with some friends in Munich, which was followed by a second
one in Berlin and a third in Frankfurt.
Why did you come to live in Italy?
Mostly by chance: a member of the bookshop had to sell the stable of his old farmhouse in the hillside above Passignano. We were curious and when we saw the place,
we looked at the lake then we looked at each other and decided to buy it. That was on
Holy Friday 1982. After heart problems in 1983 we wanted to come here as soon as
possible.
Why did you choose Italy?
A famous German writer who lived nearby, Rudolf Borchardt, once said: “Every Geman has two native countries, his own and Italy”.
How often had you been here before?
Never. We knew the north of Italy, Florence and Rome, and Tuscany.
But you spoke the language?
Inge spoke English, French and Spanish, but not a word of Italian. Thanks to
her Latin knowledge and the television she learned it fast. She even translated Luciano Festucia’s “Trasimeno
Guide”. Whereas I never did learn the language: I think only in my own language, if not, I could not write poetry.
Wasn’t it difficult to change from a lively cultural city like Munich to the calm of the Trasimeno countryside?
Often friends asked “Don’t you miss the theatre, the concerts, the art exhibitions?” We never did actually. We created our own cultural life. Every
year in September about twenty University lecturers and students came
to study my work. They stayed at “La Buona Terra” and visited the most
interesting artistic places around us, including many places not normally open to the public, like the Villa Aganoor Pompilj at Monte del Lago.
Do you have any regrets at having left Germany?
None at all. I cannot complain: since I’ve been living in Italy I have received
many literary awards - the famous Petrarca-Price was presented to me in
Siena - and honours like the honoris causa Doctorate and membership of the
Bavarian Academy of Fine Art, which perhaps I would not have achieved
living in Germany. But the most wonderful
proof of having made my real home here
was a card I received for my 75th birthday,
addressed simply to: “The Poet Paul Wuhr,
Lake Trasimeno, Italy”.
What are you working on now?
While Inge has been editing five yearbooks in the last few years, with texts of
mine as well as of friends and critics and a lot of photographs of our activities, I have been occupied with my longest and probably my last book, the 4,000
page “Der wirre Zopf”. But I have also been translating some poems by Francis
Thompson into German, like “The Hound of Heaven”, which will appear in 2009.
If you were on a desert island what book would you take with you?
The works of my two favourite philosophers: Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling and Alfred North Whitehead.
