provides a chance to win a giant teddy bear! Additional raffle tickets are available for $1 at the door. Donations can be made on the
Beth Shalom Website or in our school office. This year, our goal is
to raise $10,000 to help expand and enhance the school’s existing
programs. Please donate to support our preschool!

From the Rabbi’s Study
In Praise of Inconvenience
One might think
that we should try to
make Jewish living as
convenient as possible.
After all, so much of
Jewish living bumps up
against many current
trends in popular culture.
Shabbat candle-lighting is fixed
according to sunset, and is rarely convenient. Finding kosher food is a difficulty. Services for some of our most
meaningful and joyful holidays are
often at the most inconvenient times –
weekdays, late nights, early mornings,
etc.
This seems to fly in the face of a
world where Starbucks has a shop on
every corner, and Amazon can deliver
whatever we want in 24 hours and we
We
Need
You
can shop for anything in the world
from our computer.
However, the most convenient
things in life rarely make memories.
Think about how sleep-deprived we
were when the Royals were in the
playoffs from all the late-night games.
Recall adolescent adventures of waiting in line for tickets, or driving hours
for concerts. Try to remember when
you sought out those hard to find
museums or restaurants unique to a
special city.
For things in life that are the
same, convenience and cost are most
important. For the aspects of life
that are filled with meaning, unique,
special – and memory making – the
inconvenience actually adds to the
experience.
This is why I encourage families
to stay up late with their kids for Jewish experiences. When bedtime gets
pushed aside for Purim or a Passover
Seder, when you get to go into school
late because you were at Sukkot
services, when you take time to find
that unique holiday food – you tell
your children that whatever you are
engaged in is REALLY important. So,
instead of avoiding Jewish inconvenience – embrace it. After all, is there
anything meaningful or important in
life that’s easy and convenient?

Why the Minyan Is So Important
Can we imagine our
congregation without daily
minyan? When we read
that question, do we react
with discomfort or apathy?
When a congregation grows
to a certain size, it prioritizes at least
having its own rabbi, cemetery, and
daily minyan. We’ve recruited our favorite rabbi and extended his contract.
We’re endowing our cemetery. And,
we’re in a challenging period maintaining our daily minyan. But, we are
stepping up to meet this challenge.
There are prayers we can say
alone each morning on arising;
praising God and thanking God for
renewing our life. Why is a minyan
so important every day? We cannot
read the Torah Monday and Thursday mornings without a minyan. Of
course, congregants can hear the Torah
read on Shabbat.
We cannot say the Mourner’s
Kaddish without a minyan. After the
death of a loved one, it is our culture
to observe the period of mourning
through participation in daily minyan. Having experienced this myself, I
came to realize the powerful effect this
had on my period of mourning. I now
understand how Jewish practices assist
in restoring to health deeply mourning family members. Jewish mourning
takes a community, a minyan.
As happens in cycles, several regular members of minyan have recently
finished their period of mourning,
and while they come periodically to
support others, they no longer come
regularly. We have begun to frequently
miss having daily minyan. Mourners
cannot say Kaddish for their loved
ones. If we put ourselves in their
shoes, we can imagine how we would
feel if we were deep in mourning and
could not say Kaddish.
Fortunately and lovingly, four of
our kehillot, our sacred communities,
have been asked to step up to join in
resolving this crisis. Our Sisterhood,
Men’s Club, Library Minyan and
Board of Directors have accepted responsibility for at least two volunteers
one day each week to join the kehilla
of daily morning minyan. To all the
members of these congregational communities, thank you.

Do A Mitzvah
In the depth of winter,
how do we brighten our
days? When we wake up
in the dark and return
home in the dark, what do we do to
keep our spirits high and our faces
bright? When memories of winter
break fade and spring vacation seems
so far away, what can we do to give
ourselves something to look forward
to?
We can commit ourselves to doing something kind for others! We can
spend half a day in pursuit of mitzvot,
of doing something that not only are
we commanded to do, but something
that will make us feel amazing while
we are doing it because it will help
others.
On Sunday, January 18, you
are invited to spend the morning,
together with our CBS community
of families, making cookies and treats
and decorating bags in which we will
put these treats. We will learn about
the mitzvah of feeding others, and we
will then deliver boxes of these bags
of goodies to the Ronald McDonald
House, food banks and shelters in our
area. The morning will begin with
a community t’fillah (service), and
then we’ll start cooking and baking.
This Mitzvah Day is in honor of the
memory of the Reverend Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr., who continues to
inspire us to be aware of the suffering
of others. I hope you will join us!
Parent/Teacher/Student conferences are on Wednesday, January 21
for grades 3-7. Students are invited
and encouraged to attend. There will
be sign-up sheets for specific times
at the synagogue at the school desk.
Please speak to Jill for details.

Cemetery Committee Reached Out to
Congregants and Supporters of Mount Carmel.
Keeping up the grounds and maintaining Mount
Carmel for future generations are ongoing issues facing
the Cemetery Committee, chaired by David Sosland.
They meet throughout the year and work with the staff to
improve many aspects of this sacred ground.
There are also volunteer clean-up days chaired by
Bruce Luchen and attended by congregants, non-congregants and members of Boy Scout Troop 61 which have
helped to improve the cemetery.
The committee recently sent out a mailing asking
for monetary assistance. Your support of Mount Carmel
preserves the past of Congregation Beth Shalom and helps
insure its future.
Mount Carmel Cemetery Has New Addition
The staff at Mount Carmel now have a laptop for
their business use. Both Jim Jones and Bob Pratt have
email addresses too. If you have questions for them, you

Steppin' Out on February 15
Sunday, February 15, is the next Steppin' Out program
for CBS and all Sisterhood members, singles and couples. (As
always, your friends are welcome to attend.) The evening begins
at 6 pm with dinner in Goldsmith Hall followed by entertainment from the antique pop duo, Victor & Penny. "With a fiery
ukulele, a red-hot jazz guitar and tight vocal harmonies, Victor
& Penny put the swing, the jump, the stomp and the roll in
prohibition-era jazz and clever original tunes." In addition to
appearing in numerous venues in the metro area, during the
last two years, the duo has traveled more than 80,000 miles
throughout 28 states appearing in festivals, clubs, and private
engagements.
Deadline for reservations is February 6. Your check
made payable to Steppin' Out is your reservation. Please mail
your check for $12 per person, along with your contact information, to CBS, Attn.: Steppin' Out, 14200 Lamar, Overland Park, KS 66223. For further information, contact Linda Lessner, [email protected] or 913-897-0122.

Editorial Comments
The month of January begins with the secular New Year. We jokingly make resolutions
such as: we are going to lose 20 pounds, we are
going to work out every day or we are going to
eat a more healthy diet. But on a serious note,
do we make any resolutions concerning our
observance of Judaism? Have we come to weekday minyan
lately? Do we come to Friday evening Kabbalat Shabbat
services? What about Shabbat morning services? Have
we made plans to attend the Sisterhood Shabbat/Kaplan
weekend, February 6 & 7 where we will be treated to the
wisdom of Rabbi Amy Eilberg? Do we take advantage of all
our synagogue has to offer? Maybe we need to rethink this
resolution business and give it some serious consideration.
