All Monarch™ products are made from uniquely formulated composite material. Designed to be virtually maintenance-free, there’s no painting or staining as with real timber. Maintaining The Beauty. 1. To prevent moisture build-up, follow Monarch™ installation guidelines. 2. Weekly sweeping is the key to keeping your deck free from environmental impact. 3. Follow mildew prevention guidelines included in this Product Guide. All exterior building materials are affected by mildew even composite decking. The Truth About Mildew. Debris Debris Debris Debris Deck Deck Deck Deck Deck Clean of Debris Environment to Colonize Mildew Spores Mildew Spores Mildew Colonize Mildew Occurs Why Does Mildew Occur? Mildew is an airborne spore found everywhere, however mildew needs a source to colonize on. Among the sources to which mildew may colonize are – grass, tree pollens, leaves, nutrient-rich dirt or dust. Most often these sources are found on any exterior horizontal surface – such as a deck – even a composite deck. Where Does Mildew Most Likely Occur? 6 Since mildew spores travel as airborne particles, horizontal surfaces are more likely to accumulate mildew. You may notice that mildew rarely grows where the deck is covered (example: overhangs, under mats, or on the underside of decks) the reason is that mildew spores travel airborne and settle on the top of horizontal surfaces. They can’t settle on the deck where it is covered. Other Surfaces That Are Affected By Mildew • Patio furniture (glass, metal, plastic) • Concrete (sidewalks, patio, walk paths) • Ornamental landscape accessories (glass, metal, plastic, concrete) Less Maintenance Mildew Removal 1. Prior to cleaning your deck from a build up of mildew, you will need to pick up one container of Bleach. 2. First, remove any mildew build up by sweeping your deck. – Sweeping the deck every week will help to eliminate the build up of surface film of dirt, dust, grass, leaves and pollens – Remember, sweeping is recommended for regular cleaning. Washing your deck should only be used when removing mildew 3. Next apply Bleach to your deck. It is best to apply by spraying – that will give the most even coverage. Note: Be sure to wear protective eyewear and protective clothing as the bleach may spray up into the air and damage your clothing or your eyes. ALSO: To protect any plants near your deck from potential damage by the bleach, cover with a thick plastic sheeting. 4. Let the Bleach sit on the deck for at least one hour. This will allow the cleaning action to work prior to washing. 5. Next, take a stiff brush and scrub the deck. A stiff brush with a long handle makes the process easier. 6. Finally either hose or power wash the Bleach and loosened mildewed debris off the deck – use the pressure washer to hose off the deck rather than placing the Bleach in the pressure washer. Note: If using a pressure washer, follow the manufacturer’s instructions, and it is recommended not to use a kPa setting higher than 6895 kPa, 54.4˚ C. 7 Monarch™ prior to installation Installation for Residential Green Tree™ Decking by Monarch™ 1 Storage of Decking Prior to Installation Monarch™ Green Tree™ deck boards should be supported every 600mm when stored. All wood composite boards, while stored uncovered are subject to tannin stains on the board surface. Rainfall accumulates between the boards and cannot evaporate. Material at the job site should be stored under cover to prevent rainwater from collecting between the board surfaces. Once installed, Monarch Green Tree decking is largely unaffected since rainfall is able to drain and evaporate. 2 Basic Uses for Monarch™ Decking Monarch Green Tree decking (nominal) 138mm x 25mm boards are designed for deck, patio, walkways, pool decks and similar applications. These boards may also be used for many conventional timber applications where non-load-bearing members are required. This Green Tree deck material is particularly well suited for outdoor uses due to its durability characteristics. 3 Distinct Natural Colour Variations Colour tone variations in Monarch Green Tree deck boards are part of our patent-pending natural colour variation process. Monarch Green Tree replicates the look and feel of natural exotic hardwoods with each board being created as a unique one-of-a-kind piece, with slight colouring variations and individual colour graining and shading. Prior to installation check list: Every Green Tree deck board is unique in colour and shading – Take the time prior to the installation of your deck boards to arrange the boards in the manner that is pleasing to your eye. Joist Spacing – A maximum of 400mm joists centres for standard parallel or perpendicular decks and a maximum 300mm for diagonal or any sort of angle installation is advised. Deck boards must be gapped on all four sides for expansion and contraction - During installation at temperatures BELOW 16˚ C gap a minimum of 6.5mm, ABOVE 16˚ C a gap of 3.5mm. Fasteners – Stainless steel deck screws, composite deck screws and commercially available hidden fasteners are suggested. Pre-drilling and countersinking maybe required. Nailing, gun nailing and pneumatic nail guns are not recommended. Pre-drilling / Over-tightening - Pre-drilling is mandatory within 25mm end or edge of the deck board, as is driving screws only to a slightly snug condition. Failure to do either could result in the immediate or eventual cracking of the deck board. Joist Attachment - Two screws should be installed at each joist. 8 4 The Beauty of Blending - Set Up “Your” Design Standard Monarch Green Tree decking is uniquely colourized throughout the entire board, making the boards as workable as any piece of timber. Take full advantage of the variations of deck colouring from board to board by planning your deck to obtain your own unique distinctive style. Laying out the Green Tree deck boards prior to attaching to your subfloor will help you obtain your desired visual style and personalized outdoor environment design. Green Tree deck boards can be cut, routed, and ripped for creating individual designs. Green Tree deck boards are designed to be used with either side as being, “the right side up”. 5 Construction Limitations Monarch Green Tree deck boards have a lower modulus of elasticity than timber, and thus are more flexible. Therefore, this material should not be employed as a structural component. The Green Tree deck boards are not intended to be used as posts, joists, beams, studs, columns or stringers. 6 Construction Advantages Monarch Green Tree deck boards can be fabricated and installed with the same tools used for timber deck boards. The product will cut and drill very cleanly because there are no knots. For best results, use carbide tipped blades and bits. 7 Deck Replacement Advantages CAUTION: Monarch™ Green Tree™ decking is great for deck and rail surfaces, but it is not intended for structural use. Monarch Green Tree deck boards should not be used for primary loadbearing members, such as posts, joists, studs, columns, beams or stringers. The recommended subfloor standards for Green Tree decking are the same as that of a standard timber decking in accordance with the building code of Australia. Thus Green Tree deck boards can be used easily as a replacement material atop an existing subfloor with additional joists required to facilitate 400mm centres. Follow the same Green Tree decking installation guidelines for replacement decks as spelled out in the continuing installation document. 8 Natural Colour Shift Monarch Green Tree decking will lighten over time to a beautiful seasoned tone. This colour shift is dependent on exposure to sunlight and other environmental factors. The seasoning process begins upon installation and may, in some cases, be complete within 6-12 months. 9 Proactive Steps for Mildew Prevention Prior to Installation • Slope the under-deck area away from the house for proper drainage. (If the under-deck area is moist, leafy or poorly ventilated, it will promote the growth of mildew.) • Use a high quality landscape fabric under the deck and cover the fabric with pea gravel or washed stone. (Avoid the use of bark mulch around and/or under the deck, as mulch can be heavily laden with mildew spores.) • The deck needs to pitch properly away from the house for drainage. (Minimum of 3.5mm for every 2.4m is recommended.) • Verify there is no dryer vent and/or gutters discharging onto or around the deck. • Assure that there is proper under-deck ventilation. (Use lattice along sides of deck, covering the space between the deck and ground. Fascia boards can also be used, but allow spacing between fascia boards and ground.) • Follow gapping recommendations in this installation guide, with a minimum 3.5-6.5mm spacing between boards and ends. 9 installation guide Installation for Residential Green Tree™ Decking by Monarch™ 1 Subfloor Construction When decking with Monarch™ Green Tree™ (nominal) 138mm x 25mm deck boards, joists of the support frame should be spaced on centres of 400mm or less. Deck boards should not hang over rim joist more than 50mm. When deck boards are installed at an angle, the joist spacing must be no more than 300mm on centre. 2 Installation Spacing When installing Monarch Green Tree deck boards, gaps should be left between boards to allow for expansion, contraction, and drainage. When completing a Green Tree deck installation with temperatures below 16˚ C , leave a 6.5mm gap at each intersection. When completing a Monarch Green Tree deck installation with temperatures above 16˚ C leave a 3.5mm gap at each intersection. The same gaps standards are also necessary at the ends of planks, both for butting them end-to-end and at the intersections with walls, posts or other elements. 3 Installation Fastening Note: 63.5mm conventional decking screws in stainless or Monarch decking can be attached with several methods: topceramic are recommended for screwed with conventional decking screws, or composite trim decking installation. head screws and concealed or hidden fasteners attaching to the sides or the bottom of the boards. Two fasteners should be used across the board at each joist. Always test the desired fasteners prior to installation. Monarch strongly recommends using stainless steel or ceramic fasteners to prevent possible discoloration of deck boards. Galvanized surface fasteners or pneumatic nail guns are not recommended. When using conventional decking screws the heads must be flush with board surface and not over-tightened. With installation using conventional decking screws, head penetration will cause slight bulging of the material around the head. This may be carefully removed if desired or can be pressed down over the screw by using a rubber mallet and gently hammering the bulge over the screw. Monarch recommends when using conventional screws, pre-drill with a countersink bit, then the screws driven only to a snug condition. Specially designed composite decking screws are available and prevent material bulging during installation. Typically with reverse thread at the top and small trim heads these screws can be driven into the board and the excess material pinched over the screw and tapped down to almost nearly conceal the evidence of a fastener. Pre-drilling is recommended when installing Monarch deck boards in temperatures below 6˚ C, or within 25mm of the board end or edge. Caution must be used to avoid over-tightening fasteners within 25mm of the board end or edge. Excess tightening may cause immediate or eventual cracking of the board end. For best results when using screws, pre-drill with a countersink bit, add a double joist at joints, and use a stainless steel finish head screw. Several hidden fasteners are available that attach to the sides or bottom of the decking and conceal the fasteners from the show surface of the deck. Always test the product before using with Monarch decking. 4 Stair Tread Installation When using Monarch Green Tree deck boards as stair treads, follow the Australian approved building codes especially as they pertain to subfloor of staircase. Follow the Australian building code for allowable rise run, bull-nose landings and overhang. Stair stringers should not exceed on 400mm centre, 300mm on centre is recommended. After securing the rise, the deck board shall have a 3.5mm space from the rise. Between stair treads, also leave 3.5mm space. Stainless or ceramic 63.5mm long conventional decking screws are recommended for screwing the stair threads in place. Note: • Galvanized surface fasteners should not be used. • Pneumatic nail guns are not recommended. • Caution must be used to avoid over-tightening. 10 Monarch™ Warranty Monarch Warranty – Domestic Applications For added peace of mind, every Green Tree™ Decking by Monarch™ product comes with a 20-year, fully transferable limited warranty.
